The man’s a genius with wine and food
So start with the staff… friendly and helpful and knowledgeable… restaurant is well laid out but not overcrowded so dining feels private but comfortable and nice atmosphere. Music not too loud and eclectic but not offensive. Wines were just spot on not only in quality but in pairings. Food was fabulous overall. As a person who despises beetroot I was not looking forward to that course but he converted me as I loved it. Same applies to dessert as I love the smell of coffee but would literally spit it out if I accidentally had a mouthful but because it was subtle and not overpowering in the dish it was not an issue .Loved the snacks at the beginning and so glad we decided to add them on to the full tasting menu. The course I was looking forward to most was the Gurnard on paper but actually I was a little disappointed as felt the fish was a little over cooked and didn’t really feel the hassle back potato worked with it . Venison was sublime but felt I missed a trick by not adding the additional sides as the jus was so concentrated and flavoursome that the celeriac was not enough to balance it. So either it needed more celeriac or the side . I loved it and I think it should be suggested to diners or more celeriac given to balance it out. It’s only a niggle not an issue in the scheme of things. Wish I lived closer to come back soon but for us to come we need to stay overnight so it’s a treat . But we will be back and hats off to the team as they are working well.

The food was fabulous. Took friend for birthday treat and what a treat it was. First class in every way. Hat's off to you all, especially the chef. I'd marry him tomorrow, sure knows the way to a, woman's ♥

Kota is located in the beautiful harbour side village of Porthleven, it’s pretty from the outside, friendly, cozy and casual inside. The service is professional but friendly. Tim seated us and generally looked after us , helping choosing wines . We wernt rushed and there’s just the right amount of time between courses . We had the 6 course taster menu, with a wine pairing also . The food is presented beautifully, and every course was so good. Amazing cookery and tastes. We’d ordered home cooked fries as an extra , which we had with the cod . We did not need them and when we left, we were so full up, which I did not expect!.. Kota is , for us , a treat restaurant, which I’d highly recommend and definitely book again . Loved it . Thanks .

Superb 6 course taster menu with lots of wonderful flavours to tickle your tastebuds. The service as always was very good, attentive, well informed staff. The only down side was that it was a little chilly in there and the toilets were freezing.

Fabulous lunch here today. Couldn't fault the food in any way. Goats cheese sorbet with warm honey cake is genius! Can't wait to go again. Perhaps a lick of paint and a bit more thought in making the place feel warmer and comfortable?

We came on the final evening of our holiday. I have seen lots of reviews complaining about the menu and small choice. There is a meat and a vegetarian tasting menu. I had the vegetarian one and it was excellent. My partner was able to mix between the meat and vegetarian one. The staff were attentive, helpful and accommodating. I would argue that the portion sizes were perfect meaning you finish the meal satisfied but not over full despite 4 courses. I would very happily return
Be the first to ReplyTasting menu NOT a success.
TripAdvisor tells you at least one thing, that a Michelin rating does not necessarily a good restaurant make, and to assume it is all good based on the M rating is folly. And of course it is not all about the food, an M starred menu presented in your own home is far less wow; much as you might like your personal surroundings, when you go out to eat the ambience is all part of the experience. And here at Kota that is just lacking. If you land inside the front door and there’s a general ‘where do we go, what do we do next?’ feeling then we are not off to a good start. There is not even a greeting from the bar man who is less than 10 feet away. And that may be part of the problem - that as soon as you enter you are essentially in the very small bar area, everything seems to flow through this area, and so it gets congested. Congestion leads to confusion and a misjudgement that the folk who are looking bewildered in your ‘vestibule’ are your paying patrons. The overall ambience is of noise, and too much of it. Too many hard surfaces including the tiled floor, make every conversation less intimate and more public. And because of the additional noise the volume of conversation tends to rise adding more to the general cacophony. It is a small salon but it is over stuffed with covers, and there is feeling that you are almost sharing your meal, and conversation, with the neighbouring table or that neighbouring elbows and chairs crashingly interact. Should you mind that in Michelin rated restaurant there is a lack of table coverings and that there are tea lights in IKEA glass holders? Well it is all about the image you want to project. To borrow a medical analogy - if your surgical scar looks immaculate you tend to assume your surgeon has done beautiful work inside of you. There is a fine line between over attention and insouciance, and while the young staff were pleasant and helpful, it did feel as if the diner had to do all the work in moving the meal along. A four course ‘tasting’ menu somehow managed to extend to two and a half hours, and there required at least 3 reminders that the time between ‘courses’ was far longer than felt acceptable. And then a general feeling that the food had spent just a couple minutes too long on the pass. For our guests, the Dame and the Knight, used to the predictable delights of their usual gustatory haunts on the South coast of Cornwall, this was a first visit, persuaded by us that Kota would be a suitable and acceptable alternative to TR2. I am not sure that they were full convinced. A 4 course tasting menu was pitched at £49.50/cover - essentially an amuse bouche of a soup which one needed to drink- I’d have rather had a [tea] spoon, it would at the very least made it more elegant - and a tiny doughnut which appeared to have little relationship to the soup. 2 starters - a fish tartare or ceviche and a scallop - both quite tasty, but so tiny in quantity that actually quite difficult to assess flavour in any great detail. 2 polite mouthfuls and they were gone. In truth you could have completed both starters in 2 modest mouthfuls. Choice of ‘main’ course a monkfish/pollack combination or a flat iron beef steak. The Knight, the Fellow and the Doctor chose the fish - the Dame opted for the steak. And again not to say that these were not neatly presented and tasted fine, there just really wasn’t sufficient in either plate to really either enjoy or savour the food. Of a 20cm setting you’d be stretching it to say more than 10-12% of the plate contained anything edible. Of the fish there may have been 10grams of monkfish and possibly twice that of pollack. And generally - taster menu or otherwise - a main course you do rather expect to be larger in size than the starters. Here everything might as well have been billed as a starter, and that was a disappointment as one was hoping for ‘more’ after the featherweight starters. Dessert was a choice of ‘an apple a day’ an allusion to the Masterchef style ingredient [here apple, obviously] done several ways. And indeed it was very apple-y. But also very small. The other choice was a honey and almond cake with goats cheese sorbet, a 2 mouthful at best affair. Undoubtedly there is likely to be a lot of process involved in producing the food, and the outcome reflects this, it does look very pretty. But an attractive 6cm creation in the centre of a 20cm serving vessel, bowl or plate, is incongruous and appears decidedly ungenerous. And ultimately is not sufficient to allow one to savour or really enjoy the flavour, texture or quality of the food. And nearly £50 for 4 small plates of food, served staccato over 150 minutes, in a tight packed salon, and having to endure a cacophony over which ones company could be barely heard was not the expectation of a Michelin rated establishment. £68 for a £18 bottle of wine? This is not London where such mark up is necessary to pay sky high rents, this is a fishing village at the end of Cornwall. Porthleven may target itself as the foodie haven of west Cornwall, and Kota probably contributes to this vibe considerably given the pedigree and fame of the chef-patron, but in reality the offer has to be better. Inevitably there will be the grab of those visiting who will eat Michelin wherever there’s the opportunity, and they will be pleased simply because they feel they ought to concur and not challenge the Michelin guide’s opinion. But if you seek repeat business from those who reside in Cornwall, your Dames, Doctors, Fellows and your Knights, those who may pass on recommendations locally, within and without Cornwall, it has to be better than this.
Be the first to ReplyPleasant, relaxed fine dining, with a focus on fish...
We had the six course tasting menu, which of course means the individual plates of food are small, carefully put together and intended to delight and surpise. I noticed several reviewers have complained about "portion size" so was amused to see that the diner at Kota with a bigger appetite can get a side of chips. I would suggest that folks who are keen to consume a larger meal or a "proper plateful" as some would have it, go instead to the local fish&chip take-away and eat from there and leave the happy customers at Kota in peace! The meal was expertly presented, the service was efficient and the wine flight seemed to go well with the dishes. All-in-all, a delight and no chips needed...

We had the four course taster menu and wine flight. Every course was delicious, beautifully presented and perfectly matched with wine. The staff were polite and knowledgeable.

We felt that what Kota claims to be on their site is not what they actually are. Mind you, quality of food and taste were certainly fine but we took the four course menu and had we not taken extra sides we would have left hungry, portions are very small. Besides that ambiance is nice but not as high end as suggested and finally service varied between waiters but on average was more pub-style than exclusive. Finally the mark-on their wines is high, about x 4.
