konban NYC New York Reviews from The Last Year
Solid place for good katsu.
Made a lunch reservation here for a weekend and were seated right away upon arriving. Service was friendly through the meal with our waiter always in the area when we needed. Food was good, the highlight being the corn personally. I also was surprised with how good the cocktail (Sakura) was. The pork cutlets (katsu) was in line with other good ones I've had. Cute vibes here with a clean and modern aesthetic. If you like katsu, I recommend giving this place a shot.

Konban was a delicious experience! The restaurant was really nicely decorated with clear Japanese inspiration. We ordered the corn ribs, eggplant, katsu, and both desserts and was very pleased with every dish brought out to our table. Servers were kind and attentive, sharing the details of each dish. My only wish was that rice came with.

Konban is mediocre at best with the hype not even close to matching the quality of the food. Even on a weekday, this place is packed to the brim and difficult to get reservations. We were disappointed at how loud the restaurant was and the quality of the service. You basically have to shout constantly in order to talk with people at your own table and half the time I couldn't even hear the server. If you take a look at the menu, half of it is alcoholic drinks and they REALLY want to push that onto you. We were asked multiple times if we wanted to get drinks by different servers, but we flatly said no each time. That was honestly kind of frustrating, especially for those who don't drink. For me, the food usually fixes these problems, but that just wasn't the case here. The biggest red flag for me was that you couldn't order rice with your tonkatsu; in order to get rice, the server recommended ordering the sushi, which had sushi rice!!! Listening to the server explain that logic to me left me kinda speechless as I find it really difficult to comprehend not eating plain rice with my tonkatsu. The tonkatsu and udon were quite underwhelming anyways with the corn ribs and branzino being alright. Right now, I don't think it's worth the effort to secure a reservation here. Maybe when the hype dies down and they take some more customer feedback will I potentially even try this place again.
Love the corn, the katsu is pretty good as well.
Nice environment but waiters rushed us out. We spent less than 45 minutes ):
Great food, good ambiance, and attentative service without
Great food, good ambiance, and attentative service without rushing. Good choice of sake list as well.
This was a lovely place.
It is tucked away with an side entrance, but had an great ambiance inside. The staff here was very accommodating and allowed the group to easily split the check. The seating was good even though we came in a party of 7. The scallop dish was quite good. The sauce paired well with the veggies and scallop. The veggies were also cooked well where there was a still crunch to it. My only caveat was the there seemed to have been some type of sand pieces in the dish because when I ate the scallop there were some small hard pieces. The corn ice cream was great. The outside seems to be a type of chocolate and the inside was corn flavored ice cream. It is reminiscent of corn candy. The pork katsu was favorable. It would have paired well with some rice, but it is not included with the dish. However, the pork was tender and juicy with a crispy outside. The service was exceptional. Our server, his name was kevin if I'm not mistaken was accommodating and attentive to our table as well.

Been here twice already and it just gets better! Katsu was perfectly crispy and juicy, and the menchi katsu was surprisingly delicious. I'm usually not a big fan of the minced meat texture but they do it so well. Another standout was the mazemen - omg the noodle texture was amazing. Sad that they don't offer rice nor soup for dinner. Would've made the meal so much better.
Konban is incredible.
Everything was great and it's worth the hype. I recommend going with a small group and trying a large variety of items. The corn ice cream is also a must. Service was a bit unattentive at times, but I imagine that's just because they're still fairly new.

The restaurant was sleek, clean, and nice with attentive waiters. Food wise, I was not that impressed. I went twice to try most of the menu and probably would not go back for a third time. We ordered the iconic konban cornrib which was seasoned with corn cheese powder and shio kombu. It tasted like a chip and was pretty good. The branzino w/ mushroom was alright. The fish was kinda dry but the mushroom which was decently flavored. I usually don't like mushrooms but the chicken stock and maple soy sauce neutralized the strong mushroom taste. The niku udon was quite disappointing. It was an extremely small portion and not filling at all. It had black garlic oil which made it unique but honestly not worth $20. The mazemen was al dente noodles with a little spicy pork and homemade almond butter sauce. This was my least liked dish. The best thing I tried was the tenderloin katsu. It was super soft and katsu sauce was flavorful but it was so small that I wished there were more to be filling. For drinks we got the soba cha tea which was nice and soothing with roasted grain that I enjoyed. The sayonara cocktail contained premium soju, blood orange, eldelflower, and lemon. It pretty good and not super strong. My friend ordered the soul cocktail and it was kinda gross with the mix of soju, green tea, ginger, mint, and lime. It was so bitter and the alcohol hits you immediately. Overall, the small portions of the food and the high pricing left me unsatisfied. Usually, I would be full with the amount of food ordered even when sharing with others because I have a relatively small stomach but I had to get another meal afterwards.
this spot is on my list of top NYC restaurants is Konban!!
this spot is on my list of top NYC restaurants is Konban!! this contemporary japanese spot is known for their katsu, which was indeed deserving of its fame: crispy on the outside and juicy + tender on the inside. and with the truffle salt? absolutely slayed. everything else we had was also amazing. the fish in the sushi set just melted in my mouth and the black garlic oil in the niku udon was unique and added to the flavor. and last but not least... the corn ice cream !! perfect for people who don't particularly like sweets (aka me). overall 10/10 spot :-) what we ordered: - sushi set - tenderloin katsu - pork loin katsu - niku udon - dessert: konban corn ice cream
One of my favorite dinner spots in NY and I can't wait to
One of my favorite dinner spots in NY and I can't wait to come back. It was definitely a bit difficult to snag a reservation here. The entrance is easy to miss as it's tucked between two buildings. The ambiance is wonderful, lots of wood and even a zen garden inside. All the food knocked it out of the park. I absolutely adored the corn ribs that were crunchy and juicy and beautifully seasoned. The udon noodles in the cream were wonderful and we also enjoyed the soupy udon. The bingsu dessert was a perfect texture and tartness. Can't recommend this place enough!
I liked their food overall every dish was so delicious.
I gave 3 stars because of their rushing service. We made reservation at 5 pm, walked in 4:45 finished all the food in 30 minutes. We felt rushed throughout the dinner time. I wanted to enjoy the food and drink and socialize with my friends but server was constantly coming to us and took empty plate and gave us check right away. I don't know if I would go back because ambience is also important. We also pay for our time to enjoy food.
Had a 4:30pm reservation for Konban.
Slightly early for dinner but the restaurant still had a nice buzz and liveliness to it. I really was surprised by food here. The noodles, corn ribs and scallops are a must order in my opinion. The Katsu and sashimi was great quality and still very satisfying. I definitely will be returning to try other items.
As someone that's part Japanese and grew up eating a lot of
As someone that's part Japanese and grew up eating a lot of katsu I was very excited to try this place hearing rave reviews. Service was very attentive and quick and we got seated immediately. Ambiance was very pretty and calm and could be appropriate for a casual catch up with friends or something nicer like a date night out We started with the corn ribs and despite not being the biggest corn person I did enjoy these as a well seasoned snack. I personally probably wouldn't order it again on my own for my own preference but also I felt the portion wasn't great as it was 50% cob and a bit misleading in the amount of corn it actually ended up being but again I did think it was well seasoned! The mazemen was also solid very similar to other types of peanut noodles you see in different types of Asian cuisine and while the noodles were good I also don't feel it was memorable enough where I would be particularly inclined to order it again as supposed to trying one of the other noodle dishes. We got the pork katsu with the brunch add on. The miso soup was very mediocre in my opinion but I really enjoyed the black sesame dressing salad which was very refreshing. Now for the katsu, I think the entire dish with the truffle salt and wasabi was an excellent combination that I would absolutely come back for and often times found I didn't even reach for the tonkatsu sauce because of the great flavor of the katsu with just the wasabi and salt. The katsu itself I will say was solid in terms of quality but it's far from the best katsu I've had, and honestly I've had comparable quality from other places with better portions even just in New York. As a katsu enthusiast I would probably give the cut itself it a 3.5/5 but with the additions of the seasonings it brings it to a 4/5. I definitely would come back but would not vouch for it as the best katsu in the city
Absolutely incredible meal! The service was efficient and
Absolutely incredible meal! The service was efficient and outstanding too, with polite and helpful staff. I have been wanting to come here for a long time and so happy I was able to secure a reservation. We actually had a party of 5, so we had to email the restaurant to request a table for that size, but they were super responsive. All of the katsus were perfect, with a crispy exterior and extremely tender interior. We also ordered additional items such as the Sabazushi, eggplant agebitashi, mazemen, etc. and every bite of every dish!
Food: 6.
5/10 Service: 6/10 Ambience: 7/10 Konban is overhyped imo. My table felt like everything was very bland and a little dry. We barely finished the corn ribs and left hungry because we didn't want to order any more dishes. I would not go out of my way to eat here. We ate the Pork Loin, Karage, Scallop Carpaccio, Sabazushi (Mackerel sushi), and Corn ribs. Service was the most off-putting. It's hard to describe the service but I've rarely felt so pressured and annoyed with service at a meal. We arrived on time for our resy at 5:15pm. We're allotted 1.5 hours but felt extremely rushed. The waiter came every 3-5 minutes after seating us to take our orders. Food came out almost immediately. And they cleared our dishes immediately. If it went the server's way, we probably would've been out of the restaurant in 40 minutes--but we were trying to enjoy the meal and catch up with friends.
Everything at Konban NYC was lovely.
Despite the packed indoor space, it's well-arranged, and the spotless, relaxing restroom is a nice touch. The zen-style garden view from the seating area adds to the ambiance. We may have chosen the wrong katsu (pork loin), which lacked flavor and relied heavily on condiments like wasabi and salt, though the meat was tender. However, everything else we tried was superb: the konban corn rib, shishito pepper, branzino with mushroom, and niku udon each had unique elements. The branzino, especially enjoyed with the soup and mushrooms, was my favorite. Given its popularity, be sure to book in advance--spontaneous visits might not guarantee a spot.
Holy f this meal was so good.
Was worried ab the fact that it was popular online but i was not disappointed. The tonkatsus were done so perfectly (I've never had katsu this good in North America) and the truffle salt was soooo good. You MUST GET THE MACKEREL SUSHI!!!!!! It was literally so freaking delicious it altered my brain chemistry. The niku was okay and broth and meat were good but raku udon noodle texture was superior. Drink was just ok but strong, and the dessert was unique but def on the tangy side. Katsu and mackerel were 10/10 and ambience and service were also 10/10.
Excellent tonkatsu, among the very best in the city.
The only problem is that their kitchen is too small for the restaurant, and food can take a long time to arrive. I'd give them 3.5 stars if that was an option.

No wait for 2 people for Saturday lunch Pork Katsus were really good- made the chicken karaage disappointing! Sushi was good priced; mackerel roll was amazing! The noodle was a small portion.
If it were easy to get a reservation I would be here more
If it were easy to get a reservation I would be here more often. The food was generally great, with some unusual dishes - their corn creations and their katsu. The rest of their dishes were fine. A little disappointed with Sabazushi. 1. Konbon Corn Ribs (Corn Cheese Powder, Shave Combo) $12 2. Menchi Katsu 2 pcs (minced pork katsu, tonkatsu sauce, pickled cabbage) $14 3. Tenderloin (fried pork tenderloin, tonkatsu sauce, wasabi, truffle salt) $14 4. Sabazushi (mackerel sushi) (ground ginger, shiso, sushi rice) $18 5. Karaj (lightly battered fried chicken, chili mayo) $13 6. Shishito Pepper (Ami Powder) $10 7. Bronzino with Mushrooms (Metke, Brown Shimji, Maple Soy Sauce) $24 8. Muzmin (Spicy Pork Maze Sauce, Homemade Almond Butter) $16 9. Konban Corn Ice Cream (oven roasted corn, white chocolate) $12
So glad I was able to snatch a reservation when my friends
So glad I was able to snatch a reservation when my friends are visiting from out of town. We came here for lunch on a Friday and it was busy but not overly crowded. The restaurant was bright, clean and comfortable. Tables were separated enough where we were able to have a comfortable conversation without overhearing the other tables around us. We almost ordered everything on the menu because they all sounded so good. The highlight was the corn ribs, scallop carpaccio, bronzino with mushroom and katsu. The corn ribs were so flavorful with the umami taste from the shio kombu which was well balanced with the creaminess from the cheese powder. This dish was voted as our favorite and would come back just for it. The scallop carpaccio was crisp and refreshing. I especially liked the added texture from the cucumber, radish and grape. The yuzu dressing was so good I almost wanted to ask for a spoon so I can finish every last drop. The bronzino with mushroom was also one of our favorite and we decided it's always a must order dish. The fish was cooked to perfection and the skin was crispy. The mushrooms were so good as it had soaked up all the soy maple broth. We actually ordered all 4 of the available katsus and the tenderloin and the pork loin both stood out. The meat were very tender and moist and the batter were light and flaky without being too oily. I didn't see a drop of oil on the white paper. Some of the dishes unfortunately were a let down. The butter scallop, although the scallops were very fresh, the dish was extremely salty. It felt like they had forgot it's seasoned and did it over and over again. Although that eggplant with the pork ragu sauce was good, it felt a little out of place because I felt like I was eating an Italian dish at a Japanese restaurant. Another disappointment was the Konban corn ice cream which was the main reason why I wanted to come here. I think it's made just for instagram because it looked good but fell flat on the taste. First, it was extremely hard to cut into because it was almost frozen inside. The ice cream was not creamy enough so it felt like I was eating shaved ice (you can even see the frozen parts exactly like when you have a freezer burn). The outer chocolate layer was overly sweet and when combined together with the ice cream, I couldn't taste anything except for the sweet chocolate. I ended up omitting the outer layer but still couldn't taste any corn. Overall, I think Konban has many solid dishes that I would definitely want to return for. The price is reasonable with surprisingly generous portions. If it's not so hard to get a reservation, I would want to go back more often!
The place has great ambience.
Staff and service was greats. Small menu but cohesive overall. Had Niku udon, corn ribs, corn ice cream, Toro bowl plus the the two different katsu! the katsu pieces were very lightly seasoned so that was different for me and not as juicy but they seem to use leaner cuts of meat. Enjoyed corner ribs and toro bowl and corn ice cream. Would pass on udon nothing that wow me. They also have a zen garden outside. Overall good ambience, food was okay

My friends managed to get a resy for weekend dinner! Loved the intimate vibes and interior decor. Service was fast & friendly, and I appreciated the complimentary cherry tomato appetizer. We ordered: Mackarel sushi: my favorite! Tenderloin: juicy and crisp Corn rib: it's corn! flavorful and unique Eggplant agebitashi: reminds me of Italian eggplant parmesan Karaage: least favorite, a little dry but had a good black pepper sauce Mazemen: almond butter was a nice touch The corn ice cream (white chocolate flavor) was a fun way to end the meal, though it is super frozen. Our waiter saw us struggling to cut through, attempted to help, and also struggled. We wondered why it wasn't thawed before serving, but perhaps that compromises the shape of the ice cream. Entertaining, but underwhelming in taste. Overall, a great place to dine. The portions are more girl-dinner sized, but I guess that just means you have to try more on the menu!
My girl friend has been dying to go here for the longest
My girl friend has been dying to go here for the longest time. She finally was able to make a reservation and we went. To be fair, the place was fine. I see how ppl like this place, but for me, I personally thought it was just okay. We got the following: - cucumber salad with bonito flakes: the bonito flakes made this dish. I feel like I've made something similar at home without the bonito flakes. Will need to try it out with the flakes and see if it tastes the same - shisito peppers: grilled shisitos with anchovies on top. The anchovies is a classic Korean side dish and at times they do put shisito in the dish. This was a different interpretation of it. Also something else I feel like can be easily replicated at home. - scallops: well, scallops are just delicious in general. I liked this dish and it had grapes, which was an interesting take. Good, but nothing I'd write home about. - fried rice with uni: this is a bit hands on where you wrap the rice and uni in seaweed. The uni was divine, but everything else, was just okay. - bass with mushrooms: wow the mushrooms were delicious! The fish was as well. One of my favorite dish of the night - karage: this was what my friend came for and it was dry for me. She loved it - corn ribs: okay, this was killer. The Doritos sprinkled on top was just ridiculous! This may have me coming back! My girl friend ate majority of the food bc I was full and wasn't all that into the food. Nothing wrong, it was just okay for me. However, I ate most of the corn ribs and the mushrooms and fish. The service is great and they give you a little tomato kimchi and glass of sake when you sit down. Cost of getting res and benefit of it all is not worth it to me personally. Good food, good service, but not worth going crazy to get a reservation.
Came here for dinner on a weekday and had an amazing time!
Came here for dinner on a weekday and had an amazing time! We made a reservation for 5:30pm and the restaurant was pretty full. Many groups of friends and some couples on dates. The staff were super friendly and seated us right away. Loved the interior vibes of the restaurant! The food was amazing too. I love corn and had pretty high expectations for the corn ribs, and wasn't disappointed at all. The udon was delicious and perfect paired with the fried katsu and karaage. The cocktail was also very good - slightly sweet but can kind of taste the alcohol. Definitely worth a try and would come back again!
Pretty good spot for casual eating with a friend.
They start you off with complimentary small bites which was really yummy and a shot of the yuzu-ade which we ended up ordering a full glass of. The fish in the sushi set were good, not bad for the price. The corn ribs we asked for no cheese which was great for us, just tasted like how grilled corn should taste. The karaage was so good and juicy, my favorite with the sauce. The porkloin was another favorite but I wish it was bigger. The service is great, the food comes out fast and we were able to get a lot of recommendations from our server. The interior is so cute it reminded me so much of Japan.
Made a reservation prior to coming here two weeks out.
I heard it was a new Katsu place so I decided to check it out. There is still a hype due to it being a new restaurant and being packed on a Thursday evening. The restaurant was packed full of people. The inside is dimly lit and has a candle on each table. There is an aesthetic vibe with a zen-like feel with a stone garden visible through the window in the seating area. The service was overall very good. The food however was mediocre at best. There was an appetizer of yogurt, cherry tomato and a yuzu sparkling soda. It was a refreshing start to the meal. I ordered the Tenderloin Katsu, but it was not tender at all. It was a pretty hard to chew piece of meat. The coating was crispy and light. I don't think the wasabi and salt really paired well with the Katsu. Also got the corn ribs which were probably the best thing on the menu that I tried. The Udon had a garlicy flavor with a light taste. I think the flavors were mostly from the oil they used. Finally, the corn ice cream. The outside of the ice cream is white chocolate. It is pretty solid as it is frozen. It was a bit hard to eat at first due to the hardness of it. The chocolate was overly sweet and the ice cream did not have much creaminess to it. There were ice crystals in it which got rid of any creamy texture to it. I had high expectations prior to coming, but after dining here, I would probably not go a second time.
Somewhat hidden from the street and when you enter it feels
Somewhat hidden from the street and when you enter it feels like a Japanese garden oasis! Enjoyed the corn ribs, pork loin katsu and the mazemen noodles (these have some heat!). Didn't love the karaage (you can find better so many other places) or the pork tenderloin katsu (had a weird fat layer). Service was a bit slow but they allowed my friend and me to occupy a table for 2.5 hours on a Friday night.
Wow! Excellent Katsu Specialty Restaurant
Hidden gem, down the stairs in an alley. Ordered pork loin katsu - so juicy and lightly breaded. Sushi was excellent. Mazemen noodles. Dessert was not be missed. Moderate to small portions. Very good service.

It can be under your name or a name you choose! Some reservation offers already include the AppointmentTrader Transfer Service which will transfer the reservation in to your name. If its not included you can add it on after buying the reservation for a small fee. One thing on that though: As many reservations become available at last minute, taking a reservation in someone else name is quick and great for privacy. Most reservations on AT are listed with a virtual phone number, so all you need to do is present the phone number at the hostess stand and you are good to go!
