Kappo Makoto Washington Reviews from The Last Year
Really wanted to like this place.
Took my husband there for his first Father's Day celebration. If you're a true foodie and know what Wagyu tastes like, then you'll be very disappointed as we were. I think out of all the courses, the only Wagyu that was acceptable as a true Wagyu was one out of the two Wagyu steak course. For those that had never had Wagyu before might be impressed.... The Wagyu Shabu meat was chewy Steamed egg was very tasty - I could eat 5 of these Fried Soft Shell Crab was done well but very minimal seasoning Sashimi trio was disappointing. Nothing out of this world or memorable Wagyu steak - like I mentioned, only one of the two pieces was good and melted in your mouth. Considering this place tries showcasing Wagyu heavily, it fails in all aspects. The quality is not there at all and it is disappointing at $150 per person. Service was great. But like some reviewers had stated, they're pushy on the add-ons which is not worth it in my opinion. I think we had to say no politely three times before they gave up lol. I'm so glad we didn't do it.
The course menu followed the Japanese Kappou Style order
The course menu followed the Japanese Kappou Style order and was primarily based on Wagyu beef. They mentioned that the beef was sourced from Miyazaki. The fatty tuna, referred to as ootoro, appeared too red to be authentic ootoro. The rice used for the sushi was a bit soggy. The shaved ice was very finely shredded, a quality that's rare even in Japan. The bathroom could use some improvements.
I dined at Kappo for my significant other's birthday this
I dined at Kappo for my significant other's birthday this past weekend. For a $500 price tag for food and drinks for two, I found the food to be underwhelming. I left the restaurant still feeling hungry, and I've had better tasting wagyu dishes at other restaurants. My girlfriend found a fish bone as part of her sashimi trio, which was disappointing given our expectations for the restaurant. As for service, our waiters were very attentive and kind, so no complaints there. Overall, I think if you were looking for a strong culinary experience, I would not recommend Kappo given the quality and the amount of food served.
Just wow! My first Wagyu experience and it will never be
Just wow! My first Wagyu experience and it will never be forgotten. I organized this for a special occasion, so the fact that this was a very expensive dinner was not an issue, but make no mistake about it, this is an expensive dinner. I loved how small and intimate this restaurant is. There are only 3 tables that seat 4, and then 9 seats at the counter. The service was impeccable. The food and drinks unforgettable. This is absolutely a perfect venue for a very special occasion.

Expensive but a great experience and ends up being a decent amount of food. Perfect for a special occasion.
Delicious food, great service and experience.
Intimate and cozy ambiance with only 21 seats available at a time. Worth the price.
Here is the good, the bad, and the ugly for this
Here is the good, the bad, and the ugly for this restaurant: The ugly: nothing really. The bad: I've had better wagyu in other restaurants especially in NY. Here, the beef was fresh but other restaurants were able to season it better with different flavours or presentations even. The good: amazing sake list, great service, and beautiful bathroom and restaurant decor. If you want an omakase A5 experience, sure, try it. I've just had better seasoned A5 with wasabi or soy sauce; or just plain salt. It's hard to put a finger on, but this restaurant's pairing of meat and vegetables just didn't hit the mark.
Delicious from start to finish! It was tucked away, but
Delicious from start to finish! It was tucked away, but once you find the entrance, the service is impeccable. It had a nice, private type of ambiance. Each course was so tasty. We got the Sake to accompany the courses, which worked really well. A time was had! Well worth the cost!
Good service but the ingredients and quality are definitely
Good service but the ingredients and quality are definitely not worth the money you paid for. The dessert was plain ice with no decoration. This place is very much overpriced and overrated.
Kappo is absolutely amazing for a special dinner.
We celebrated my fiancés 30th birthday here and everything was divine. The dishes were so unique and flavorful. It wasn't just a dinner it was an experience. The whole thing takes about two hours. Our server was so attentive and was there for anything we needed. The cocktails although don't seem like they have a ton of alcohol definitely do and were some of the best we ever had. (We had the feel like a million and the intercontinental). Originally we were a little worried we would leave hungry because of the small portions, but we left stuffed and extremely happy. The restaurant was super sweet and provided a small cake with candles. Which was out of this world. I would definitely recommend taking your loved ones to here for a surprise and wonderful meal.
My goodness.
..I am pretty sure Kappo DC is the closest thing to heaven on earth. Upon arriving, you are greeted with a conspicuous entrance, light brown wooden door, and a gold plaque with "Kappo Makoto" carved into it. It gave off a very exclusive and high end vibe. Once our dinner reservation time arrived, the door finally opened with a host greeting and welcoming us in. Walking by an amazing display of various bottles of sake and a large mirror for us to snap a picture together, we entered the main dining area. To start, the chefs introduced themselves and gave us a little history on the restaurant's creation and overall vision. We ordered our drinks and we were given the option for the uni & caviar add-on. Since it was my birthday, you can bet your ass we got it! To start, we were presented with the wagyu summer salad. Every ingredient paired perfectly together with a dash of acidity from the light dressing. The uni was absolute butter. The wagyu was melt in your mouth goodness. The greens provided the perfect balance to the rich, complex flavors from the uni and Wagyu together. I knew we were in for an amazing night. Next up was the Chawanmushi, a savory egg custard with wagyu. It was delicate and velvety, yet bursting with umami. Of course, with our caviar topping, this dish was the perfect amuse-bouche. The sashimi trio that followed did not disappoint. The first was light, refreshing, and well balanced. The colors of this dish popped, with bursts of green, pink and orange. The fish (I believe it was hamachi) was super fresh and perfectly marinated. The next one was more meat centric and being paired with the uni, it balanced out the sharper taste of the tuna. The final of the trio was a scallop sashimi, with thin cucumber slices and red onions in an acidic drizzle. Like the first one, it was refreshing and bright. Annnd let's not forget, the caviar/uni pairings which perfectly meshed with each dish. Next up we starting getting back into the wagyu with the Wagyu Menchi Katsu. This one was fun to eat, not anything super impressive, but overall had rich flavor and sat atop a small pool of sauce and a shishito pepper. Overall, a nice change of pace from the fish heavy dishes from before. Onto the Wagyu Chirashi Sushi, this was by far one of my favorite dishes on the menu. The presentation was gorgeous, with a small ball of white rice topped with orange salmon roe, red tobiko, bright yellow quail egg, vibrant green chives, a little yellow flower and a gold flake on top. Let's not forget the radiant uni and caviar to top it all off, this dish was bursting with color. The flavor was overwhelmingly good. My friend, wife and I couldn't stop ourselves making awkward "mmmm's" and "oooh's" out loud lol. It was served in the perfect portion, as any more would have been too overwhelming, but any less would leave much to desire. The Wagyu sukiyaki was a good transition from the rich and savory flavors of the Chirashi. It was solely Wagyu beef with glass noodles and some greens on top, sitting in a puddle of delicious sauce. Sweet yet savory. At this point I was getting very full. Finally the Curry Udon arrived. It was good, but honestly it was definitely well past the climax of the courses. I found this to be a grounding dish, bringing us back down to earth after being sent into space. It was comforting and warm. I wouldn't say it was amazing, it was just nice. A reminder that overindulgence can be detrimental to your overall enjoyment. They did provide me with a scoop of some yummy ice cream since it was my birthday, but also we were sent home with some Royce chocolate. Among the dishes, they had really great cocktails and we also got a bottle of "Seven Spearsmen" sake, which paired really well with the rich and fatty flavors we consumed. Service was phenomenal and I think the chef's enjoyed us at the counter because of how expressive we were and amazed by each dish that was put forth. They spent a lot of time chatting with us while preparing the meals. All in all, this was a five star experience and I would totally go back. I just need to figure out how I can afford this for a second time
Sunday evening wagyu Omakase.
The courses were all excellent, and the service was prompt and delightful. Lacks the pretension of peer competitors. The servers were especially warm and down to earth. I'd recommend Kappo.
Small reastaurant.
Street parking. Servcie was exceptional. 8-course wagyu experience startint at $150. The food was spectacular, but when all things are said and done, it ends up being $250 per person, including drinks and tips. I was glad to be able to enjoy this amongst close friends, but for the price, this might be a one and done experience.
Was able to try this omakase out again for a revamped menu
Was able to try this omakase out again for a revamped menu plus added uni and caviar to the dishes, which was only for a few of the dishes but definitely added some great flavour to the wagyu dishes! My favourite part was probably at the end with the wagyu nigiri pieces, which the wagyu was so flavourful with alongside the caviar and uni. My only complaints this time around were that once, the wagyu wasn't cooked all the way, so I had to chew on a raw piece for quite a while, and I believe my friend's eggroll dish was also frozen inside. But other than that, it's like I remembered the first time with being full and complimentary sweets at the end with the kind staff.
A wonderful dining experience.
Pre fixe 8 course menu full of flavor and texture. The servers were very attentive to our needs and the chef was wonderful. A great choice for an intimate night.
Delightful, unique omasake experience.
Ogawa is a genius and a true culinary artist. Each dish was very well thought out and had its own personality. So much fun! We didn't want this experience to end. The restaurant was intimate, high end yet cozy. We look forward to returning to try their spring menu.
My dining experience at Kappo DC was nothing short of
My dining experience at Kappo DC was nothing short of extraordinary, leaving an indelible mark on my foody adventures. From the moment we stepped through the door, it was evident that this establishment was committed to delivering an unparalleled Wagyu omakase experience. Let's talk about the Wagyu. The restaurant's dedication to sourcing top-tier Wagyu beef was evident in every bite. Each dish in the omakase showcased the intricate flavors and melt-in-your-mouth texture that Wagyu is renowned for. We opted for the uni and caviar selection and it was well worth it! The chefs demonstrated an impressive mastery of their craft. The variety of preparations highlighted the versatility of Wagyu, making it a gastronomic experience that I won't ever forget. The ambiance of the restaurant complemented the luxuriousness of the Wagyu experience. Elegant décor, dim lighting, and a carefully curated traditional Japanese atmosphere created an intimate setting, perfect for savoring each moment and flavor. Equally impressive was the professionalism exhibited by the staff. From the moment we were seated, the service was attentive, knowledgeable, and unintrusive. The chefs themselves took the time to explain the intricacies of the dish. The staff and chefs seamlessly worked together, providing insights into each dish and ensuring a smooth flow to the entire dining experience. We encountered a minor issue with one of our dishes. What truly set Kappo apart was the staff's immediate response to rectify the situation. Without hesitation, they went above and beyond to address the concern, showcasing a level of customer service that exceeded expectations. This commitment to customer satisfaction elevated an already exceptional dining experience to new heights. The staff's genuine concern for our enjoyment demonstrated a dedication to excellence that is rare to find these days. In conclusion, Kappo DC is a true gem for both Wagyu enthusiasts and anyone who enjoys omakase. The unforgettable Wagyu dishes, paired with the professionalism of the staff, make it a destination worth revisiting. Despite a minor hiccup, the swift and considerate resolution only emphasized the restaurant's commitment to delivering an impeccable dining experience. I wholeheartedly recommend Kappo and cannot wait to dine here again!
Outstanding experience! Such an incredible meal.
Every detail was perfection! Wagyu tasting was incredible! Expertly prepared, delicious, and beautifully presented. Started with a terrific cocktail and enjoyed a curated wine list. Each dish was a treasure. Service was attentive but not intrusive. Just perfect. Small dining room with minimal and tasteful decor. The focus is really on the meal. We sat at the chef's counter so had a great view of the action and a delightful interaction with the chef. She was incredible! Highly recommend for a very special, memorable experience.

Kappo DC is an intimate 21 seat restaurant serving a wagyu-centered Japanese tasting menu. It is delicious! You will be treated to eight delightful dishes. This restaurant has it all...service, style, and great food. I enjoyed almost everything and even what I didn't, I still loved the experience! I can't wait to go back for the spring or summer season and see what they come up with next.
We were really looking forward to dinner tonight at Kappo.
We had been there many years ago when it was known as Makoto and we had a fantastic experience then. Unfortunately that experience was not to be relived. We had a 6:30 seating and the ambience started out fantastic. Small, intimate, and cozy location. We started out with a great bottle of wine. So far so good. Then the food started coming out- it was basic to say the least. Nothing original or interesting about any of the courses except for dessert. Which was lovely, light, and delicious. The chawanmushi and the waygu Eggroll are were very good. The opening salad was basic, the sashimi was blah, the waygu entree had zero presentation and was not enticing to say the least and the udon noodles could have been from a fast food ramen joint (although that light have been more interesting). The speed of the delivery was so rapid fire. There was no time to try to enjoy the food- perhaps it was on purpose bc they didn't want you to spend time ruminating on how unappetizing it was. By 8pm, at the latest, we had gotten through all of the entrees and the bill was paid. Really quick for an eight course meal. By 8:15 someone who worked for the restaurant turned the lights on full blast in an effort to get everyone out. The next seating wasn't until 9:30 and most tables still had wine or drinks left to finish but clearly they wanted everyone out. So we spent $900 for two people, add on (uni/cavier) for each and a nice bottle of wine to be kicked out after 1 hour and 45 minutes. While the servers were nice the food was basic at best, the presentation was non existent, the rapid fire pace of the meal was overwhelmingly poor, and to be rudely "told" to leave by the lights being blasted in the restaurant less than two hours after our seating was atrocious. Clearly we won't go back and would recommend that others find another option. If you want amazing omakase then you should try omakase on barracks row. Absolutely amazing in every way that Kappo was not. UPDATE: The owner contacted me the next day to apologize for our experience. He was lovely, very apologetic, and offered to have us back on their damage to attempt to make up for such a poor experience. I thought that was very upstanding of him and appreciated the outreach. So, while our experience was clearly not a good one the intentions behind the restaurant from the owners are genuinely for their guests to have a wonderful experience. Someday we hope to take them up on their offer.
Street parking all around DC, mainly 2 hour parking signs.
If the restaurant is on your right, there's additional street 2 hour parking making the 1st right past the gas station. Walking in, you're immediately greeted. They take your coat and hang it up for you and are escorted to your table. We booked the Chef's counter. It's a small area but being at the Chef's counter was cool, you can see everything happening and the waygu cooking and preparations. The service is amazing, they don't miss a step at all, immediately clearing your plate and drink glass once finished. Every course was amazing and beautifully put together. They announce each dish and their ingredients and the best way to enjoy it. I was full after the dinner and satisfied. Loved everything and fully enjoyed the uni and caviar add on as well. For our cocktails, we ordered the Mt. Fuji and the Calor Con Leche. My 2nd cocktail was the Intercontinental. I loved both cocktails. The Intercontinental was a little sweeter than the Calor Con Leche but not a sweet drink overall. We also had the matcha beer and the salty Plum beer as well. I loved the matcha IPA beer, not very hoppy and quite delicious. I didn't really enjoy the salty Plum beer because it was a tad too salty for me but it was a good beer in general. I would definitely come back, everything was fantastic.
Recommend to visit!
I visited this restaurant for lunch on Dec 4, Monday. When I arrived at 11:10, there were about 10 people waiting in front of the door, but the number of the people in a line became 30 when it turned 11:30. Their operations were very efficient, and I suppose that we do not have to wait so long. Food was good, and I recommend you to visit there when you are in Fukuoka.

Great Service - amazing dinner!!
Read about the site in NYT and bought a reservation at Mother Wolf in LA 2 days later. Worked great and the food was amazing!!!
Worked perfectly!
Got the reservation (that I couldn't get anywhere else) and was able to entertain a group of friends at the infamous Bern's Steakhouse.
Got into Nobu Malibu
Wonderful! My parents are visiting and we have wanted to go to Nobu Malibu for years. I tried getting a reservation myself but it was next to impossible. So glad I was able to buy a reservation on appointment trader for a decent price!
Very easy
Was very hesitant going into this experience but am glad to say that it worked out very well ! will definitely use appointment trader in the future
Fabulous Lunch
I was veeeeeerry skeptical that this would work, particularly at a restaurant as hard to get into as Nobu Malibu, and it was perfect! We had lunch outside on the patio and it was fabulous!
Great reviewer team
Just wanted to take a second to shout out the reviewer team. Even though they probably review hundreds of listings and bids a day, they still take the time to leave great comments and respond relatively quickly. Thanks!
Incredible
I got a reservation to Don Angie, which I've been trying to book for weeks! I am very happy with this service.
Best platform out there!
Super simple, easy, and fast to secure reservations for hard-to-get restaurants and locations!
This app is life changing
This app has opened my world up to so many wonderful new experiences I would never have the chance to have without access to this awesome app! 10/10!

Was a little nervous at first but was pleased to see that the booking went through flawlessly.
Highly recommended.

Last minute reservation for Delilah Las Vegas
Got a last minute reservation, dinner for 2 at Delilah Las Vegas: super impressed! The process was simple, transaction seamless. We had an amazing time! Couldn’t be happier! 😍
It works!
Ok at this point I've attended a reservation purchased on AT by a friend and sold a reservation personally. Both worked pretty smoothly, nothing sketchy about it. A few areas for improvement including a way to more directly communicate between buyers and sellers, but the app always seems to be in development. AT customer support is really(!) responsive and helpful too if you have questions!
Money transfer
As a seller, I like the fact i have the ability now to transfer money out of my AT account and into a bank account. Makes getting the money much easier then the process before.
Love this app
Got to go to places otherwise unreachable
Easy Access
Very easy to get into one of the hardest restaurants to reserve in New York.
Whose name will my reservation be under when I arrive at the venue?
It can be under your name or a name you choose! Some reservation offers already include the AppointmentTrader Transfer Service which will transfer the reservation in to your name. If its not included you can add it on after buying the reservation for a small fee. One thing on that though: As many reservations become available at last minute, taking a reservation in someone else name is quick and great for privacy. Most reservations on AT are listed with a virtual phone number, so all you need to do is present the phone number at the hostess stand and you are good to go!
Payouts Blocked Because of Sell Through Rate
Does anyone know how AT plans to handle cases where a seller is quitting the platform but has a sell through rate <25%? The error message I got said to fill more bids or find other ways to increase the rate.
Is AT really going to block sellers from withdrawing their money? Especially revenue made before the sell through rate was introduced??
Tune into NBC News - Top Story Tonight 7:40p ET
Let’s go. Get more people placing bids!
I will give you 50% of ALL of my PROFITS if you teach me how to make profits?
LOL. Thank you The New Yorker.
Appointment
Transferring reservations is not supported in AT. Why not just use the name in the AT screenshot?
Buyers interested in Bern's Steakhouse: PLEASE READ
Same goes for 4 Charles and I Sodi
Prepaid Reservation Fee
Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.
Congrats on 3 mil
🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🧨🧨🧨 now on to 30 mill!
Need to cancel a bid, not getting a response… how do I do it?
Click on "Take off the Market Option" in your portfolio
Working on your bid?
Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.
Process after bid is accepted.
Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
Where do the Reservations on AppointmentTrader come from?
Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.
What happens if my bid expires unanswered?
Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
