I'd bookmarked Kanoyama here on Yelp long ago because it had Michelin-starred sushi. Indeed, in line with many other Michelin-starred restaurants, they have a tasting menu here - known in Japanese as omakase. This is $195 per person and is available only at reserved times, several nights a week. Fortunately, if you're watching your spending, it's not just about omakase. You can order nigiri, sashimi, and entrees a la carte, all at prices that are slightly higher than a merely average New York sushi joint, although not unreasonably so. Accessible enough, even, to be a high-quality neighborhood go-to for sushi and Japanese fare. Best of all: it's authentically Japanese as far as the chefs and staffers are concerned. With this in mind, I opted for value and variety, as is usually my case, in the form of the sushi special: 8 pieces of nigiri (including medium toro, kinmedai, shima aji, kohada, baby red snapper, scallop, squid, eel), a serving of tamago (egg), and a several sushi roll pieces. Each piece of nigiri had a beautiful, melt-in-your-mouth texture and consistency to them, and was slightly warmer than I'm used to seeing at run-of-the-mill sushi joints that serve things ice cold - which is something I've often found to be the case at quality sushi joints in Japan and at stateside restaurants run by actual Japanese folks. A couple of hand rolls helped me feel full, even after a long summer weekend day spent gorging on food citywide. Service was dignified in a Japanese way and the environment casual, with customers ranging from all walks of life, including Japanese-speaking locals of Japanese descent (yet another good sign in terms of authenticity). Bonus: not only is the dining room large, but there's also lots of tented outdoor seating here at their cornerfront venue.
