My wife and I finally had an opportunity to experience the "hype" last evening and we were underwhelmed. First we had hoped to arrive early and have a cocktail at the bar only to be told there's no seating at the bar despite the photos on the Jansen website. Asked why and we were told there's only one bartender for the restaurant and the six bar seats might "overwhelm the bartender". Ok. Our wedge salad came for us to share at the table (note $5 up charge for the kitchen to put it on two share plates), the lettuce crunchy but the dressing was flavorless and very watery. Disappointment #2. My $48 SIRLOIN steak was cooked properly but arrived hardly warm on a bed of lukewarm at best mashed potatoes. My wife's branzino on risotto was hot and had good flavor. Both dishes could have benefited from a pinch of salt. Experiencing too many disappointments we passed on the resident pastry chef's dessert. All in all doubtful we'll be back to experience the "hype" a second time.

We've been dining here for a few years starting pre pandemic. The value for the quality/quantity was inline with similar upscale restaurants. That was then-this is now. The prices have risen higher than their competition and the serving portions have been shrinking. Example: The salads are close to $20 each including the wedge salad with blue cheese dressing, touted as sharing size. However when we asked to share it we were changed $5 to cut and plate it. Worse, dressing had no evidence of cheese or cheese taste. Sorry Jansen, this crowd has better options.

Was taken here on a date a couple of years ago, I enjoyed it. Sitting outside on a July evening, it was very romantic and quaint. I'd def go again and I have recommended to others.

Consistently great food, nice wines, very professional service...best seats are outdoors when weather is nice.

Simply because I can't think of what would have made this visit any better. Hmmm maybe better lighting for my pictures with friends lol I have lived in Mt. Airy my entire life and Jansen is relatively new (last 5-10 years?) This location used to be a different restaurant. I think it goes through variations every ten years or so but goodness, I'd love it if Jansen could stay! So, I'd encourage making reservations at any location in Philadelphia. After living in Pittsburgh for a year, Philly has THEE best food scene in the entire state. Don't fight me on it. We do. Hands down. It got crowded after 6pm on a Tuesday here so be prepared. We were greeted immediately and shown to our table. The ambience is sleek and chic, clean and pretty ummmmm white. So don't expect trendy. The service was knowledgeable and timely. He made great suggestions. Our drinks were strong, which you know by my other reviews, I am a stickler for! Everything I ordered and my friends ordered we agreed was delicious. We had oysters rockerfeller and they were probably some of the best I've ever had. Philly has a loving history with oysters and Jansen did this history justice. I regret not pre-ordering the beef wellington but I will be back to try it. I ordered the halibut. DELICIOUS!!!!! I can't say enough about how wonderfully prepared everything was. And they didn't even get annoyed when we stayed well past our dining time. Oh wait wait Get the dessert. Most restaurants give you some day old cake with a scoop of ice cream on top but Jansen has a pastry chef. It's obvious. The lil carrot cake... whew.... so yummy and not too sweet and just the perfect portion for sharing. My chocolate-lover best friend got the chocolate cake and she said it was perfection. Run, don't walk to this place. You're welcome.

Very fancy and certainly exceeds expectations. People are very friendly and happy to answer questions. My family loves the beet cocktail and I have enjoyed every I have tried. Would recommend the oysters and all the specials! They are great! Today we sat outside and there was a small fire in the middle contained by rocks. Despite it being outdoors it's in a clear tent and heated so we were very toasty. I'm hoping to try the beef Wellington soon, since it sounds amazing. If I could I would go here every single day. Sorry for the dark pictures, the lighting is not very bright. This food is so good, I almost have to get up and dance with each bite!!!
Be the first to ReplyAwesome.
Professionally trained with an experienced staff. The food was absolutely AMAZING and the experience was a memorable one. Mouthwatering morsels in every single bite! Everything was beautifully timed and exquisitely presented. The atmosphere was very quaint and welcoming. Fine dining located in my neighborhood! How good can it get!!! I will be back but next time with a few more neighbors.
Be the first to ReplyBest meal I've ever had hands down.
Beef Wellington was off the charts, nowhere in Philly can compare. If you are in town Jansen is a must try.

Are you kidding me? How have I never reviewed Jansen? Our go to date night and 'want to impress your out of town friends' spot. We love it here. Chef Jansen is no shortage of inventive and consistently delivers on flavors that you weren't expecting and would typically never go for. I'll say that my husband ordered the Duck pot pie last time we went and I ordered the chicken special and I can honestly say that both of us were blown away. Just a super special place that were lucky to have right around the corner
Be the first to ReplyFood is great, as is ambiance.
Staff are hit/miss. I had one of the haughtiest waiters here that I've ever had. I brought guests from the area and from other cities. One of my guests had not been to the restaurant since it was Cresheim Valley Cafe. When she mentioned this, the waiter was derisive. While Jansen is different than Cresheim, Cresheim was a lovely restaurant. There was no need to insult a guest for having a fond memory of the restaurant that used to be. The waiter shared the evening's specials. The guests had questions, but if they did not follow his direction on what to order, he was downright rude. I hope Jansen takes a serious look at their service. This place could be a gem, but I don't think any restaurant will survive these days with staff that are rude, Guests are guests. Treat them as such.

This experience was such a gorgeous expression of fine dining. Our server created such a seamless service. The drinks were amazing. We were mised throughout our courses, but beyond the eloquent service, the food was incredible. The tuna tataki was so fresh, I wondered if they had a tuna pond out back! I've also never had chicken that amazing in my life. But the star of the show for me was the octopus. I love pulpo, and I cannot seem to find anywhere close by that does it justice. Well, at least I thought I liked octopus, but apparently I've been having it sub par everywhere until Jansen's.
Be the first to ReplyOne of the finest restaurants we have dined in for sometime.
Impeccable service in a warm atmosphere that features delicious American cuisine. I look forward to returning very soon.
Be the first to ReplyFood is delicious and the service is impeccable.
We visited on a busy Friday night and initially we were told there were no reservations until 7:45. They called us back and said they could seat us. We ordered the baked oysters and bib salad for appetizer, very tasty. For our entrees I had the Halibut and scallops (I'm not a fan of scallops ) but these were very good, this was a special. The sauce that accompanied the dish was delicious. My husband had a chicken dish which was tasty. We were too full for dessert but they gave us these chocolate chip cookies to take home ohhh my these were amazing you could taste every ingredient the dark chocolate the salt and milk chocolate they were soft and melted in your mouth. The staff was very attentive. We can't say enough good things about this place. We will definitely return!

I had bookmarked this restaurant a long time ago and was really looking forward to my reservation. I will note that there were definitely some highs and some lows about our visit. As far as highs, the exterior decor gave the visit an immediate coziness. When entering through the front door, it felt like entering a small cottage. We were seated close to the large fireplace, unfortunately I do not think it is an active fireplace - but it was very pretty to look at. We started with the burrata appetizer which appeared different than the photos on Yelp. I think the dish must be seasonal and had roasted squash pieces atop the salad. This was a hearty salad. For entrees we tried the Branzino and the short rib. The short rib was definitely the star of the meal. As someone that is not big on red meat, I would definitely return for this item. It was so tender and the meat was cooked perfectly. Unfortunately, the Branzino was a miss. It was grilled and all that I could taste was the char of the fish - despite removing parts of the skin.We were excited for dessert when we were told there was an in-house pastry chef. We tried the tres leches and the sauce was so sweet, it was saccharine and tasted just like sugar jam.

The menu is limited but what they have is absolutely delicious and well prepared. We love that their menu is seasonal and exclusive to what is available at the time as this ensures a completely fresh and tasty meal. The interior is beautiful and cozy. Love this hidden gem!

Sadly my favorite restaurant of all time has fallen off a bit. Several months ago I took a foodie friend of mine from NYC confident that surely Jansen could not disappoint. It did. Drink was way too strong. Food was overly-salted to the point of being inedible. Service was really odd. And not in the wonderfully quirky way that I have enjoyed with several of Jansen's awesomely attentive staff. The woman was brusque. Condescending. Not interested in discussing her menu opinions. Vegan (or vegetarian?) and almost shaming of our choice to have meat. What?!? With incredibly heavy heart I swore I wouldn't go back. When my significant other was diagnosed w a scary medical condition she wanted to go to our (former) favorite restaurant before her big surgery. I said I would give it one more try. Surely the over-salting of months prior must have been a one-off mistake. Sadly, no. Now both of us (and she is FAR more forgiving of restaurants than my NYC friend) said the food was overly-salted, we never ended up finishing either of our meals (she didn't even want to take her remaining bit home for the dog! "I'm not giving him this much sodium") and what's worse, both of our stomachs felt HORRIBLE all night long.No one wants Jansen back to its former glory more than I. It was incredible having such a high-quality eatery just 10 min from my house. As it stands now, however, like the saying says it appears that "all good things must come to an end." Sadly.
Be the first to ReplyHave gone to for years, but not since Covid.
I don't know why I haven't or why I don't very often because it was just supurb. If you don't enjoy a great dinner, don't go, but I've temporarily forgotten what a wonderful place this is. Jonah and Mira were terrific! Kudos to the coming holidays and 2023, but will see you before then.
Be the first to ReplyWell done! Her shrimp app and fish main were wonderful.
My duck main too. The chocolate brownie-esque dessert was great. Service was excellent.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent restaurant that hits high marks all around.
Menu is interesting. Lots of specials. All executed beautifully and delicious. And the service. It's pre-pandemic excellence. Team of friendly pros who know what they're doing. Hats off. Gorgeous outdoor seating with twinkling lights. Indoors: beautifully appointed and well-maintained dining rooms. Would have liked to see the bar stools back, but maybe that will come later in the fall. EXCELLENT from start to finish. Chef Jansen is crushing.

We've been considering going to Jansen for a while since we've moved to Mt. Airy. We finally did the other weekend and we're met with one of the best dining experiences and meals of my life. They had a feeds 2 special of a dry aged steak atop a gnocchi and lobster in a cheese sauce with asparagus. The steak was cooked to perfection and the other flavors accented it perfectly. 100/10 will be dining again.
