Had a good waitress, nice vibe.
It was a birthday, the waitress was great at everything. Not her fault but we were not allowed to bring a cake. Management called THE DAY OF our reservation so the $100 cake we bought was a waste, even after we offered to still buy dessert from the restaurant. But overall, the most disappointing part was being charged $3 for barbecue sauce....
Be the first to ReplyTonight was my second time dining at J Gilbert's.
I was also here three years ago for a birthday celebration. J Gilbert's is a fine dining establishment. Their waitstaff are throughly trained on the ins and outs of their menu. I have previously heard a rumor, that the waitstaff at J Gilbert are employed there full time, unlike at other restaurants. We were a party of six, again here for a celebration. We had a reservation for 4 o'clock. It was very busy, I would highly advise a reservation. We were seated quickly. Alex was our waiter. I got the Spicy Blackberry Margarita. This was so tasty, delicious with a kick of spicy from actual jalapeños! We got a large serving of the blue cheese potato chips. These are very thinly cut and once they were brought out, the server poured blue cheese sauce all over them. These are crispy, crunchy and pretty addictive! There were so many chips that the six of us couldn't finish them. For my meal I got the crab cakes, these came with asparagus and mashed potatoes as the sides. The crab cakes were very tender and fresh, they would fall apart with not a lot of effort. Unfortunately they were a bit too salty for me. I loved the mashed potatoes, they had a bit of texture, and were very delicious. The asparagus were tender and I ate them all the way through the end. Everyone was very happy with their meals. There were stakes and seafood going around the table. Whenever I see creme brûlée on a menu and I'm the mood for something sweet, I don't need to know about the other options. Creme Brûlée it was! it was so satisfying breaking that golden, glass-like sugar coat, to reveal that creamy, dreamy vanilla goodness! And the best part? I didn't have to share! We were all very satisfied with our dinner at J Gilbert's. From the service to the drinks to the main course and of course the desserts!
Be the first to Replyi have to say our last dinner was very disappointing.
When you pay $180 for two to eat out you expect better and in the past we always had received better. The lump crab cakes didn't disappoint but the meals did. I had the 8 ounce filet which was not cooked as I had ordered, the salted baked potato was small, and the green beans with pecans were so salty I couldn't even eat them. My husband liked his ribs, but he also complained about the green beans being too salty. He also said the mash potatoes were flavorless.
Be the first to ReplyThis is my second (1st 6 yrs ago) and hubs first time here.
We are house hunting in the area and finally had a night without children so we decided to treat ourselves. The best service and food hands down. I never order an old fashioned out for many years because it is always done wrong. The bartender Mike made it perfectly! (They have a smoked version on the menu, looks great, but not for me.) he hd amazing recommendations once he got an idea of what we liked and was very attentive. The whole restaurant is very well set up and lovely fireplace in the middle of the dining area. We spent more than we would normally( we have not been able to go out more than twice in 2 years), but our first time out in many years it was worth it!! If we move here I told my husband we need to come here every few months and I'll do whatever to save up so we can. It was the best time! (We are slow dining folks that like to take an hour for each course minimum)

Some of the best crab cakes I've had in my life, and I've had many! The service is exceptional. Have not had a bad waiter/waitress here yet. Is something is wrong they make it right. Homey atmosphere with a big field stone fireplace.

J Gilbert's used to be my absolute favorite restaurant but during/after Covid I felt like the service and quality declined. Prices went up and I felt like it was no longer worth going after having a few poor experiences. I will admit I still went a few times per year with friends to grab drinks or a snack at the bar but the desire of sitting down and enjoying a nice dinner lost its appeal for me. Fast forward to more recently and I felt it was time to give them another chance. Me and a friend went on a Tuesday night and it was PACKED. We arrived about 10-15 minutes early for our reservation so we hung out in the lobby while we waited for our table. Unfortunately we weren't sat until about 15 minutes after our actual reservation. Not a huge deal but had we known that they were running behind we would have grabbed a drink at the bar to kill some time. I won't mention him by name in case he was just having a bad night, maybe due to how busy it was in the restaurant, but our server seemed very cold and short with us. Definitely not the happy, friendly service I would expect here. Everything was still brought out promptly so no issue there. Drinks were amazing as always. I ordered a special steak they were offering - I believe it was 40 day dry aged. It was good but I think I would have been happy with the Kansas City strip I would typically get for about $20 less. Sides seemed larger than I remember which was nice. Overall we had a nice evening and enjoyed our food. The not so great service and increasing prices make this more of a 3.5 star review but rounding up for the ambiance, killer manhattans, and good time in general. I wish it was still a 5 star, near perfect experience like it used to be but unfortunately I think those days are gone.

We have many great steakhouses here in Wisconsin, but my recent experience at J Gilbert's while visiting my sister in Connecticut, proved to be one of the best I've ever been to. From the impeccable service, the beautiful decor and ambiance, to the outstanding food I can only say great things about this restaurant. The only negative thing about my experience is knowing that I'll need to travel back to Glastonbury to visit again! Bravo J Gilbert's.

[Very delayed review] This is straight up one of the best meals you can get in Connecticut. The "wood-fire" proclaimed in the name of the restaurant is ever-present in the perfectly grilled ribeye. Every bite was made me want hug the chef. The sides were far from boring. Perfectly made green beans along with the potatoes that had a bit of a kick from the poblano. I'm going to make an effort to return when I'm back in CT.
Be the first to ReplyGreat place for special occasions and going on a date too.
I had a great experience all around
Be the first to ReplyA little disappointed in the communication.
I called a couple weeks ago for reservations. I was given the email. Emailed 1/14, never received a response. Called again and now told there's nothing for the date I wanted. What's the point of having an email, if you don't get back to anyone.
