Spruce Tip Powder
Weird name for a review, right?
HSL is unpretentious - we were comfortable in pullover shirts and casual pants. In fact, we arrived via rental scooters. And is quite serious about its food. I'm not a drinker - but my family couldn't stop talking about the bar drinks... they just loved them.
Our waiter was simply excellent - made us feel at home and encouraged plate sharing. Its challenging to tell you what we ate - because the menu changes regularly.
One app was the grilled & pickled carrots. The pickling is done in house. There's this beautiful.. and flavorful beetroot tahini puree swirled on the plate whose sweetness compliments the sourness of the pickled carrots and smokiness of the grilled carrots.
Another app was the blistered shishito and poblano peppers with blackberry miso mostarda and spruce tip powder. Spruce tip powder? The chef gathers spruce tips... yes from spruce trees... renders them... dries them... mixes them with some starch.. and viola... creates spruce tip powder... that IDK... is kinda sweet... kinda piney.... and wicked complimented the peppers.
All I could think about was how much prep this chef is doing... spruce tip powder, sweet beetroot tahini puree, blackberry miso mostarda... OMG
Probably my favorite app was the chicories & broccolini - finely chopped with carcona almond and medjool dates... it was lovely.
For dinner we shared an HSL Burger and the fried chicken (and a few more small plates). Both were amazing. The burger is served with house made tomato jam and house made pickled red cabbage. Bread and butter pickles, house made, are served on the side. The malt vinegar fries were.... unbelievable. And its served with a side of IDK... ketchup - mayo - house made sauce. The fried chicken was by far the best I've ever tasted. Light tasting... not heavy. Perfectly brined. The side of beans, pork sofrito, was heavy. The chicken was served with dressed greens on top... .very nice. It was a great dish.
Dessert - we had a barouque (sp?) cheese cake with a side... wait for it... home made spruce tip powder sorbet... made with oat milk.... it was so good.
We also had the ice cream flight (all made in house)... two ice creams and two sorbets... and all to die for.
Finally - we went there to celebrate my birthday... and one of the staff had hand caligraphied... drew... created... a b-day card that all the staff had signed.
So many details... so many special touches... made for such a special night.
Dinner
Had a lovely low key dinner. Great service. The beet salad, general tso cauliflower and kale salad were excellent starters. The burger was cooked perfectly at medium (as requested). The bucatini was a light pasta dish. The fried chicken was huge! A massive chicken breast! The poblano crema was delightful as well.

We had a group of six here after Christmas and loved this place. Everyone had marvelous, creative cocktails, sumptuous meals and desserts, and we loved the setting - although lively, we could all talk easily. The server was inobtrusive but very animated when we needed him. We'd go back when in town again.

Our grandson took us here for our birthday dinner. From the minute we stepped in the door until we left we felt welcome and pampered. The ambiance is fabulous with quaint banquets and cozy dining areas. The wait staff were top drawer and the food was delicious. Perfect finish to the evening was a complimentary birthday ice cream complete with candles and a birthday / thank you card from the staff.

Visiting from Miami and found this New American offering interesting and thought to give it a try. We made a reservation in advance.
Very pleasant staff in a lively, cool, chic and comfortable setting.
The menu and ingredients are quite interesting and it works quite well. We were quite pleased with the food, atmosphere and service and highly recommend!
5 star but...
This was a 5 star experience with one exception. We absolutely adored our waiter, Erickson! He made our dining experience seamless. I was able to easily reserve a time through yelp, and they seated us promptly at our reservation. I loved all the food we ordered. The seeded cracker with pepper jelly was unique, honestly I’ve never had a good pepper jelly until today. The shishito peppers were fabulous, the curry sauce really made the dish. The scallops in the scallop tostadas were perfection! Last but not least the presentation on the beet salad was very impressive, unlike any I have had before (which is a lot because I love beets). The Prosecco and Pinot Gris were also crisp and refreshing for the summer night. Unfortunately the flatbread came out without any burrata so we told our waiter who promptly acknowledged and sent in for a new flatbread. There may have been a mixup due to the pappardelle request for no cheese which is understandable. The manager delivered the new flatbread and stated that the previous one did have the burrata but just a small amount, essentially trying to make us feel bad or call us liars. Poorly handled from a management perspective but well handled by our waiter. They should retrain that manager or just promote Erickson who has a grasp on customer service.

Fantastic, elegant but not stuffy, lovely and delicious food! Fantastic appetizers and great service.

We went to celebrate a birthday and decided their chairs were too comfortable to get out of. To start with, the four of us shared the meat/cheese plate. Then on to dinner — chicken, salmon, a burger, and a scallop dish. Once we saw their French fries, we had to order one to share. The meals were great, but the fries were excellent. Fun place, great atmosphere, good food, and family all while sitting in the greatest chairs ever.

This was a special place. The food and atmosphere were a perfect balance. I like the open type kitchen here. I enjoyed a sourdough bread appetizer and then moved right into a wonderful steak. The steak was properly prepared and plated in a way that made you really want to tear into it. Very tasty! The bar was full service and they had some nice beers.
I think this was a value and a solid choice. Good eats!!!
Sweet Spot
HSL is a cool American place offering some creative dishes while not being out-of-sight expensive. The Hearty offerings are the main courses that numbered six on our visit. Steak, short ribs, sea bass and the often-mentioned burger were all great. The real creativity seems to be focused in the appetizers which come in hot and cold sections. They were all quite good including the cauliflower which was exceptional.
The setting is delightful as is the service.
HSL is well worth a visit.
