Hatsuhana New York Reviews from The Last Year

I absolutely love Hatsuhana and eat there on every visit to NYC. I've dined at the Waikiki shop several times and the quality and service is just as exceptional in NYC as in HI. Reservations are highly recommended and if I travel solo, I request the bar so I can chat with other patrons and see the sushi chefs in action. Their tuna and unagi is exceptional, as is their tamago, tempura, and their specialty garlic crab roll. That was a special roll they had a couple of months back that I'd get again if it was available. Their plum wine and desserts are also tasty, which I forgot to snap a picture of. The restaurant is spacious and has ample seating downstairs and upstairs. It's been around since the 80's and is a legendary spot in Midtown, so check it out if you can.
This restaurant has been here for a long time.
Came here for lunch and they were extremely busy. Be sure to make a reservation as they are very busy during lunch. We got the Box of Dreams- fish was fresh and a nice variety. My favorite was the fatty tuna, scallop, yellowtail, uni and roe. Service was excellent.

Hatsuhana has been around since the 1970s and its lasting power and success is truly from the quality and care it provides. Came here as a party of 3 without reservation on a Monday evening at 6:45pm and was fortunately seated right away. Would recommend a reservation if you can plan ahead. The fish here is incredibly fresh. Their box of dreams is not only aesthetically appealing but each bite is a party in your mouth. The scallop was a favorite of mine. Would recommend the agedashi tofu to start, the sauce was umami and went well with the soft fried tofu. They had a special of soft shell crab (with ponzu for dipping on the side) which we also enjoyed. Don't forget to save some room for dessert as well! I think this is a great spot for celebrations with loved ones or to just come when you want a special treat

I believe I've discovered my new favorite sushi spot! My takeout experience at Hatsuhana was fantastic. I opted for the Maki Three with tuna, salmon, and scallion yellowtail, paired with a bottle of Sake. The portion was just right for a single serving. The fish tasted incredibly fresh, and the delivery presentation was impressive. Hatsuhana comes highly recommended from me.

Third time coming here, first two were great, this time was made uncomfortable by the waitress. In addition to being very pushy (with food AND alcohol), she sounded like a used car salesman talking about specials she thinks, "are a good price" or "a good deal." It was tacky and made the dining experience awkward. It's a shame because the sushi was delicious and the restaurant is nicely decorated.
Food (4.
5/5) - I got the Maki Three which with eel, salmon, and California - Got the shishito peopers, seaweed, green salad to share and found all three to be pretty yummy - Portion sizes were pretty good to decent! I was worried that I wouldn't be full, but I would say I was satiated - I enjoyed the rolls I got and definitely a step up from the cheaper places I usually go to Service (5/5) - Our server was very attentive and friendly Ambiance (5/5) - We sat on the lower level which felt more intimate and had less folks around - Great for catching up with friends or celebrating
Very good, genuine atmosphere, good value for money
Friendly and professional staff, without the artificial behaviour often seen in NYC. Very complete menu of sushi and more. It’s good and served with efficiency. Good value for money.
A weekly Friday night staple.
Been going for years. Love this place!!! Quality is always on point as well as service
First rate food and service.
Each of their dishes was prepared with expertise and care. The service was friendly and efficient. The organization of the menu made ordering easy, whether you're a sushi aficionado or a beginner, and the wait staff was readily available for any questions. Total price for our dinner was reasonable for the high quality of the fare and overall experience.
One of the OG sushi restaurants in NYC.
There is a lot of history to this restaurant. It was opened in early 80's and one of the first real Japanese high end sushi that started it the trend of high end sushi joints in my and US. No, it's not what it used to be as there are many fancier places with better decor these days. But for no nonsense fresh fish prepared with much care, Hatsuhana can't be beat. I go here because quality is always consistent and you can actually get a reservation relatively easily. Maybe for a fancy date night try one of the fancier places. But this place is perfect for a business lunch or dinner. Or a casual night on the town with friends.
The service here is traditional and top notch.
Friendly and pretty quick. We got the box of dreams sushi and another sushi entree. Fish was fresh, although rice was not as flavorful as other sushi restaurants I have been to. Recommend for photo ops and service while around 5th avenue.
Oldie but the food wasn't great.
Went because of the convenient location for the rock center tree. Definitely not as good as it used to be (decades ago), wouldn't return.
Excellent
Authentic Japanese place in Manhattan. You have the feeling of being in Japan. Excellent quality fish. Very kind waitress! Recommended for those who love real Asian cuisine.
Right Choice
We went without a reservation and lucked out. We were honored to have Nahem as our server. He was actually more than that. We trusted him to put together an array of sushi that was beyond what we expected. Best sushi we have had in a long time.
Craving authentic Japanese cuisine in the heart of Midtown?
Craving authentic Japanese cuisine in the heart of Midtown? Look no further than Hatsuhana. This hidden gem offers a tranquil escape from the city's buzz, transporting you to a serene Japanese atmosphere. The star of the show is undoubtedly the sushi. The fishes were incredibly fresh, practically melting in your mouth with each bite. But Hatsuhana goes beyond the food. The service is exceptional, with the staff treating you warmly from the start. Their knowledge of the menu is impressive, and they're happy to guide you through their specialties. A word to the wise: reservations are recommended, especially for lunch as this place gets packed! They also have a short break in the mid-afternoon to prepare for dinner service, so avoid late lunches. For a taste of their offerings, consider the Box of Dreams or Box of Fantasies. Both were beautifully presented, featuring a variety of sashimi and other seafood delights. Be prepared for Midtown pricing, but the quality and experience justify the cost. In short, Hatsuhana is a must-visit for anyone who appreciates fresh sushi and authentic Japanese hospitality. It's perfect for a romantic date or a nice business lunch.
Last minute visit without a reservation but the gentleman
Last minute visit without a reservation but the gentleman at the check-in counter was able to seat me at the sushi bar. Food was good (ordered the Box of Dreams) but I thought the service was even better. The wait staff was very attentive. The place was busy but it never felt packed or noisy. Hope to visit next time I'm in town!
Service was ok but food was disappointingly below average.
Ordered the sushi deluxe for lunch but the rice was poorly seasoned and lacked good flavor. The seasoning of the rice for nigiri sushi is critical and is paramount for a sushi restaurant. I don't think I would be going back. Unfortunately it is very different from the original Hatsuhana.
Our favorite Japanese restaurant in the world.
We visit NY twice a year and we always dine at Hatsuhana - usually the first night since we can’t wait to get there. We travel extensively and we often seek out local Japanese restaurants as it is one of our favorite cuisines. Hatsuhana is one of out top five restaurants in the world. It offers great food, service and ambience. I always feel that the fish I’m dining in was swimming that morning. You just can’t miss here.
Great food
Great place to eat Japanese food. Very kind staff. Kudos to the waiter from Pakistan, he was a great host. Great food and pleasant atmosphere. A table must be reserved in advance.
Excellent suhi in midtown
Excellent traditional sushi restaurant in Midtown. Has been around for decades and still going strong. Always crowded. They do a large lunch business. Traditional style sushi and rolls. All very fresh, very good quality. They do a very good take out job, all the sushi is nicely packed in attractive boxes. Great option in midtown.
Around Manhattan
Excellent quality food We went for lunch for a break from shopping and although the entrance is discreet the food is exceptional
Exceptionally good food, clear recommendation
Japanese restaurant with Japanese staff. Since it was almost impossible to get a table for lunch without a reservation, we made a reservation for the next day. We tried the Box of Fantasies and the Gozen and didn't regret it. The food and the quality of the fish were exceptionally good. The tuna was tender as butter, everything was freshly made. The rice was as it should be in a Japanese restaurant. The service was very friendly and the tap water was drinkable, didn't taste at all of chlorine, as is usual. The prices are fair for Manhattan in my opinion. We've eaten much worse for the same money.
Awesome
Great experience, loved the menu and atmosphere. Staff was very warm and welcoming. Also very clean, overall we loved it

Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.

Can come from a lot of places, people who don't want to get charged their cancellation fee or people who just have them and cant go.

almost all restaurants aren't affiliated with AT and I'm guessing it's mostly people wanting to not pay cancellation fees.
