Okay, I have a man crush on Ray and his bicycle mustache.
Such great customer service from such a charismatic person. He made me feel so special that night even though I didn't have reservations. I ordered quite a few items and enjoyed a really good meal. It was expensive as expected from a yakitori spot, but they were pretty good. And service was spectacular. Corn tempura (14) - you get three patties of corn stacked on a stick with various dips. The green is the best: zesty. It's a great photo and fun to eat. Avo Tuna Toast (22) in theory is good, but it just tasted salty to me. You get two large pieces and the price is pretty steep for that.Chicken Meatball (7) is a classic and a favorite. Seasoned well and perfect texture. Pretty much a crowd pleaser, just with you got two for the price.Pork Belly (5) was forgettable for me. Not that unique. It feels like a filler.Bacon Asparagus (6) its so funny that the most basic item was so good. The prepare the asparagus in a way so that it's not bitter. The bacon that comes with it was the perfect paringTheir interpretation unagi (12) was fun. Good texture, But definitely predictable in taste. Skirt steak (18) was too chewy. My jaw hurt trying to break this down.We got a bonus item: Beef Tongue which I imagined what the pork belly should have been: 3 chucky cubes. They were fantastic and had a great sauce. They noticed that the second part of meal came out slowly so they comp'd one of beers (7). How amazing is that? That's what all restaurants should strive to do if something taints a customer experience. it doesn't cost much to give away a drink just to make sure people are happy. I love this.Another thing that I like is that the calculated tip is before tax and they give 15% as an option. See, an ethnical business. It's not hard people!3% for kitchen appreciation? Gladly!

The decoration and lighting at this place made it feel very elegant and classy. The waitstaff was also pretty friendly. Since it was a tapas place, my friend and I got a couple of plates to share. We chose the Black Chicken Karage, Miso Spare Ribs and the Soboro Rice. Honestly, the chicken karage didn't taste that different compared to other chicken karages that I have had. It was also very salty, bordering on almost too salty. However, the miso spare ribs were definitely worth it. They were so tender that they fell off the bone when we were cutting them and the sauce was super flavorful without being overpowering. Lastly, I would skip the soboro rice. It honestly was a small bowl of white rice that seemed to be topped with some ground chicken and a mini yolk. It wasn't very flavorful and we didn't even end up finishing it. For dessert, we picked the marble sesame cheesecake which is very worth it. The sesame gives the cheesecake a more nutty flavor and is so good with fresh blueberries. I think my only complaint was the price point. While I definitely was full after this meal, for this price point, I expected more unique dishes or a dish that really wowed me and there wasn't anything particularly special.
Be the first to ReplyI've been here once before when the restaurant first opened
I've been here once before when the restaurant first opened in 2018 (?). I remember meeting the owner but unfortunately, he wasn't at the restaurant this time around. I'll honestly admit that I haven't been back since because Hatch wasn't very memorable for me the first time around other than the black Kara-age dish that was served mainly because of its unique appearance. The food could have tasted better but I also understand that the restaurant had just opened less than a month and probably needed to improve their dishes. Today's review will reflect the 2nd time going when I went for my friend's birthday last week. My friend specifically chose this place because he loves Yakitori, so I figured, sure why not, since it's been a few years. First off, the restaurant has parking validation available for I believe a reduced rate. There's also street parking around, but might be difficult to find especially at night when metered parking is popular then. I ended up parking at Fig@7th structure since I got 3 hours free from my gym membership at Gold's Gym and walked over.Hatch is located on the lower level of The Bloc shopping center. It's tucked away in the little corner. Outside is very minimal and the inside is quite elevated and chic. They have what looks like an outdoor patio for outdoor dining but because it was raining the day I went in, everyone was indoors. Our host seemed busy at first but another employee--perhaps a waiter--had asked if we were seated and promptly tried to seat us in the back of the restaurant. Customer service is already great right off the bat as they were attentive and provided the service quickly. What we ordered:Bottle of Demon Slayer Sake - Very smooth and paired well with most of the items that came out. i liked this sake. Served cold and quite refreshing.Squid Ink Kara-age - This was definitely way better than the first time I came. Not sure if they changed anything or the chicken itself tasted better, but I do think this is one of their most popular items and that's for a reason. The batter to chicken ratio is pretty good too unlike some places I've been to in the past.Agedashi Tofu - I think I would order this again. I really liked the taste of the Agedashi tofu in the thick shiitake broth. I thought the two really complimented well with each other since tofu is simple and bland and with the mixture of the salty shiitake broth both gave it a balance once it entered my mouth.Fancy Fries - These came out piping hot and I think it was a big hit. I ordered this as I like to have carbs with my meats and veggies and I think everyone enjoyed it after the wedges cooled down.Miso Pork Spare Ribs - The ribs were recommended to us by our server. I would recommend this dish as I liked the miso caramel marinade they used on the pork ribs. The one thing I love about my ribs too is when it falls off the bone and that was exactly what happened with this dish. It was slightly on the smaller side for our group to share, but we were all able to try some. Wasabi Short Ribs - This was a big hit within our group. Just imagine the Korean style short ribs with the three bones nicely marinated to their own sauce but you can still taste the quality of the meat. I really liked this dish - soft and chewy. It was so delicious.Corn Tempura - This was a sad and underwhelming dish. Our waiter suggested this and when it first came out, it looked pretty epic with its presentation with 3 corn tempuras stacked on one another, but it was just okay. I was surprised the waiter had highly suggested it as I think this would be my second to last recommendation from what we ate.Winner, Winner Chicken Inners - Personally, this was my least favorite one. If you're not a fan of exotic meats (heart, gizzards, and liver) then I would just do without this dish. I gave it a shot, first with the heart which had a very "hearty" taste, I couldn't handle the gizzard's texture, and the livers had a very strong, iron taste. It wasn't an all around winner for me.Under the grilled sticks we got the chicken meatball (full of wonderful flavors), beef tongue (I could only handle little bits of this but it was good), chicken thigh and green (probably my favorite of the yakitori) and the mushroom party!I guess that concludes my review for Hatch. Although it's a step better from when I first had it, I don't think I like it enough for me to come back unless another friend wants to try this place again. I do think I have higher standards for this restaurant as it aesthetically looks beautiful, but the food just isn't up to par to it's image.

Decided to grab a bite to eat after attending a showing of cocaine bear. Our server, Manny, was one of the most attentive and helpful servers I've ever had. He gave us so many good recommendations and gave us a history about the restaurant. The food was so good that I am planning to go to lunch there tomorrow and try some more Yakitori. If there is one restaurant you have to try in the BLOC before you die, hands down it's hatch. Hope to see manny again!
Be the first to ReplyReally cool vibe, interesting menu, and awesome service.
This place is located in a mall on the outdoor ground level. My favorite dishes were the black rice, the corn, and the brownie with green tea ice cream. Some of the dishes were a little too oily. But overall, it was a great experience.

Be the first to ReplyFancy tapas place located at the Bloc in DTLA.
Came here with friends during the Christmas holidays as the plaza was decorated with lighted holiday photo opps plus they have a light show set to music that appeared every hour. On to Hatch. The atmosphere was classy and upscale. The Japanese tapas were pretty good and fun to share with all. Favorite was the bone marrow, as it was creamy and served with this chewy Mochi bread. Texture and flavor wise, it was like a party in my mouth and I'm still thinking about it. Also, do not let the color of the black Karaage (second favorite) put you off, it comes with a grey garlic ranch sauce that pairs perfectly with it. We shared other tapas like the pork belly, skirt steak, unagi, and the Furikake salmon. All good. Lastly, you can't have tapas without drinks! I ordered the Jessica Rabbit and it was just the right sweetness and well made. Hatch has plenty of both indoor and heated outdoor seating to enjoy your tapas with your friends. They validate parking for Bloc's convenient parking structure. Take your ticket with you and pay at the machine before you return to your car.

Went here for lunch! Not too busy, but wifi can be a dead zone so just a fair warning if you're trying to multitask or browse IG. The service was excellent. Staff was friendly and helpful in explaining what the dishes were. Very izakaya style. Love the chicken hearts on a skewer, but skip the corn. Get the eel if you can. Want to come back for dinner!
Be the first to ReplyFantastic experience all around.
Great staff (Miguel was incredibly attentive as well as the host/owner), food and drinks all excellent. Absolute must try for a creative, up-scale but unpretentious experience. Well done.

We had a great dining experience at Hatch! We finally got together last night for a mamas night out celebrating two of our girlfriend's December birthdays...better late than never! We enjoyed our drinks, food and friendship. Started the evening with oysters and drinks. I very much enjoyed my earl grey highball. We ordered all the Plates and our standout favorites were the grilled mochi bread, black fried rice, agedashi tofu and miso pork spareribs. We were a tiny bit disappointed in the bone marrow as there was hardly any marrow but very much enjoyed the second one (courtesy of the Hatch) that came out! We also enjoyed some skewers like the eggplant&miso, lengua, salmon furakake, shishito pepper and mushroom party. We ended with the marble sesame cheesecake and shots (of which I can't recall)! Service was incredible and very attentive! Overall, it was a great night!

Repeat after me, "hidden gem!" While in LA, my friends and I were on the hunt for oysters before we got back to reality and took our flight home to NYC. Upon a copious Yelp search, Hatch came up on the list. Not realizing we would be going into an open air mall, we didn't expect much from the establishment but boy were we blown away! The service was amazing. The drinks were potent but the food is where I'd be remiss if I didn't tell you to run not walk to Hatch. As their menu consists of individual items, my friends and I ordered a bunch of things and split things up. The oysters were absolutely fresh as well as well dressed. The ribs are so tender and flavorful. Everything was amazing from start to finish. Shout out to our waiter for the sake shots. You helped us close out our trip in the best way.
Be the first to ReplyEverything on the menu is unique.
I came here on a casual Thursday dinner with my friend.Quite literally everything was worth the price. Never have I ever tried a squid ink fried chicken. What an experience!!! Oysters sweet and succulent. Drinks tasty and addictive! We ordered almost everything on the menu :)The server was alright. I don't if it's the restaurant style or it's his personal style. But kinda like tossing the menus around throwing them in a stylish way. Was just very odd.
Be the first to ReplyWe had our date night here.
We didn't drink but we ordered a lot of food. All dishes are flavorful and recommended! Super delicate and tasty! Please order the yuzu sparkling drink! Will definitely come back again!
Be the first to ReplyA HIDDEN GEM the atmosphere is nice w/ space heaters.
Ordered the Hamachi and it was delicious. ( & I don't order raw fish that often) The server made sure we understood the menu. Ray has a great personality & Welcomed us in. Will definitely be coming back!

Atmosphere: a modern dimly lit aesthetic with a flaming see viewable hibachi grill next to the slick long bar. The service was good was given good cocktail recommendations. Food: the menu has appetizers, hibachi skewers and sides. The food was overall great, but NEEEEDS SAUCE. If every dish had an accompanying sauce I think this would be a 5 star. The black fried rice was healthy tasty with corn and garlic, the mushrooms added a good hardy flavor but until we asked for hot sauce is was just ok, with hot sauce it was so good. The Unagi skewer was perfect 10/10, melt in your mouth umami eel flavor with an amazing bbq sauce that only complimented the base taste. I added the unagi to the fried rice and died it was so good. The corn skewers were ok, they should go all out and make it elote with more butter or mayo. The mushrooms skewer was good, each mushroom had its own distinct flavor but would have been elevated with a sauce. The shishitos were bland, could have been softer and needed sauce. Drinks: the Maria drink was great and had an interesting unique flavour, recommend. The Nikka whiskey cocktail was.... Nikka whiskey; like a Japanese whiskey old fashioned, I expected the yuzu to be more powerful but it was hardly a cocktail. Very strong and small drink for $25. But if you like Japanese whiskey this is the place for you, they have a massive section on the menu with 20 different Japanese whiskeys.
Be the first to ReplyDelicious! Great food, great service, great drinks.
Between two of us we had the Corn Tempura (must get this!), the Black Fried Rice, the Pork Belly Yakitori, Shishito Peppers, the Skirt Steak Yakitori, and the Chicken Meatball Yakitori. Everything was so tasty, my favorites were definitely the Chicken Meatball and the Corn Tempura. I also ended up getting the Sour Dez cocktail which was also really yummy.Would definitely recommend!
Be the first to ReplyIt was mid-afternoon and we were really hungry.
Hatch had an intriguing menu, so we hoofed it over there with the help of the maps app. Our waiter walked us through the menu explaining that the plates were for sharing and each person should order 2-4 yakatori skewers. My personal faves were the black chicken karaage and the onigiri. I was, however, disappointed in the lack of seaweed on my grilled onigiri despite the illustration in the menu which was wrapped in seaweed.

Came here for lunch, spent way more than I intended to spend, got way too much food, then got drinks--I regret nothing. Great spot with unique options and fantastic cocktails. Since it's in a mall it feels a little corporate-y, but don't let the location fool you. This place is all heart and the food tastes it.

Very unique and interesting food! I loved the avocado toast (the "toast" was rice which was cool) and the black fried rice was really good
Be the first to ReplyCame here on a sat night with some friends for dinela.
Everything was perfect. The start was a miso soup with roasted corn. Very unique and interesting. The menu then consisted of charcoal karage which was delicious. Next up was a hamachi with some ponzu then a mixed salad. The salad was definitely a great palette cleanser with a unique vinaigrette as dressing. We then had a variety of yakitori consisting of bak choy, pork belly, some shrooms, and this meatball thing. Last up was this pan fried onigiri with a sukiyaki raw egg as a dipper. Overall great food with awesome drinks. Get the Heavenly Sake! Cheers!

Jamie & Athos are your game! These guys were on and I could not be more happy with their service! 2) Oysters- JUST WOW, I was shocked here. It's a ย MUST.3) Perhaps the BEST Ahi tuna toast. Pleasantly surprised and really happy with the potatoes on the toast not being greasy. GUYS please order it4) GUYS the black KARGKE is simply the most alive I have felt in a long time. You may think it's charcoal, but NO the flavor just invites you to think.5) ย Last, ย but the least, mushrooms. Yes, I said mushrooms. I am not over reacting, these could be the best thing I have had all year. IIf you are lucky enough to pass through LA, ย I would say you would be making the BISGEST mistake of your life, if you did not stop by this place. Again, service A+. Food A+++++, and if you don't try this place, you aren't trying life. Love - my ย stomach

Servers and chef were awesome (gave great recs and the chef talked us through each dish because we were at the bar) The food was some of most original yakitori I've ever had. The blackened Karache is off the chain. The bone marrow was the biggest and most perfectly cooked I've ever had. The salmon poke was amazing and original (pickled beets and grilled Edamame, who does that!). The beef tongue skewer was insane (i mistook it for the pork belly at first because it was so tender and fatty). Cocktails were unique and amazing too. And they make all their own sauces. Anyone complaining about price to food ratio must be basing things off chipotle or something. We ordered 15 (yes fifteen) items and 4 drinks and it was under $250. If you're looking for a modern take on yakitori that's inspired by the classics and elevated by modern California ingredients, this is the place.
Be the first to ReplyThis place absolutely blew my mind.
My husband and I went crazy and practically ordered the entire menu. The MVPs were the tongue skewer, the unagi skewer, and the bone marrow with mochi bread. I've never had anything like their spin on chicken karaage either, so fun and delicious. But truly everything from the cocktails (loved the yuzu highball) to the sesame cheesecake was incredible, and the customer service matched the food. I spoke with the chef when he brought a few plates to the bar and he was full of excitement about the techniques and flavors on the menu.
