Hank's Seafood Restaurant Charleston Reviews from The Last Year
Great seafood, nice ambiance!
This was our best meal in Charleston. The ceviche was excellent and different. Grilled swordfish perfectly done. And the bouillabaisse was outstanding, with a very generous selection of shellfish and other seafood. Also, our waiter, who we at first thought was merely annoying, was hilariously loud and theatrical, adding (for us, at least) a memorable touch to the evening.
Fresh, delicious seafood
Great place for seafood! Waitstaff was incredibly friendly and welcoming. Seafood was fresh and delicious. I got the grilled seafood platter with shrimp, scallops and grouper. Delicious but the grouper “filet” was ridiculously small. That’s my only complaint. Restaurant was quite busy and very noisy. Still recommend and would go back.
Minor Disappointment
Food is usually great but my crab cake was very mushy. Waiter was excellent. Noise level in restaurant makes normal conversations impossible. Desert selections could improve. Pecan pie not too exciting as served. Would give it another try.
Way Overrated, Bad Food and Hidden Charges
I had read many good things about Hanks and they have apparently won some awards but we do not understand the positive reviews and awards. Our experience was not good. The one positive was the service. Our waiter was very professional. The ambiance is lacking as it is just one large room with tables jammed next to each other. It was noisy. My wife ordered a glass of Riesling that was clearly not a Riesling. Tasted like a dry Chardonnay. The she crab soup was terrible. It was so heavy on the sherry that you could not taste the crab or soup. Very strong alcohol taste. The waiter assured me that the blackened scallops were not spicy at all. They were so spicy I really couldn't taste the scallops. The scallops came with grits cratered to hold cream corn. Doesn't sound bad but it was not especially tasty. The topper was realizing later that we had been charged 2.5% for a service charge to support culinary wages. Never heard of such a thing and seems like it should voluntary. We left a large tip as it is. We were also charged a 1% credit card fee! In my 60+ years of eating in restaurants all over the world, I have never been charged a credit card fee. We recommend steering clear of Hanks.
Don't move the furniture!
Hank's cares more about their furniture than their customers! We flew into Charleston in January to celebrate my husband's 70th birthday. When we arrived, Hank's was near our hotel, so we stopped in to celebrate with drinks and dinner. We didn't have a reservation, so we grabbed a cozy spot for two at the end of the bar. Unfortunately, the bar stools didn't have backs on them, and my husband's back started to hurt. We noticed a similar bar stool nearby with a back, so we made the switch since we didn't want to bother anyone and didn't think it was a big deal. Oh, were we wrong! A very upset manager came over about 10 minutes later and said she wanted that chair put back. We explained about my husband's back problems and that it was his 70th birthday. She didn't care one bit. She said that chair didn't belong at the bar. Wait, what?? So we left and went to Meeting at Market restaurant who bent over backwards to help my husband celebrate this milestone event. I have to say, every restaurant we visited in Charleston was incredible, EXCEPT for Hanks.

Great food, I had the rare seared tuna which was a good portion and quite enjoyable. Although the restaurant was crowded during the dinner hours, there was good service. The vibe was very sea like and southern . My stomach was a little queasy after but overall pretty good
Needed a great meal, fresh food, served the right way
Great service, knowledgeable team, good food in a non rushed atmosphere. Sean (Shawn) was our server, as usual, he did a fantastic job! This was our fifth time here, we are local and Hanks is not a tourist stop..... food prices keep the tourists out and the it shows when you go in that the clientele is above a majority of restaurants in the area. We usually sit on the "Common" table as we meet people. Will be going back soon. Thank you Hanks!
Special meal!
Great ambiance, great service followed by great food!! First time to Hank’s and were very impressed at all levels. Wife had a glass of wine (generous pour) and I had an Old fashion (very tasty) to start and had mussels appetizer. Huge amount of mussels in tasty sauce. Broiled seafood platter and pan seared scallops were 2 of the best entrees in a long time. Crème Brule finished off a wonderful meal. Appreciated the great job Cameron did making sure it was memorable.
Good Quality Fish
Excellent food and service. We had calamari as an appetizer, swordfish and grouper special for dinner. Our waiter, Shawn, assisted in drink and dinner choices and was attentive but not intrusive. Highly recommend this restaurant for the best fish dinner in Charleston. Reasonable price for the quality.
We love Hanks.
As locals, it's fun to go to something touristy that's actually excellent. This visit we got the she crab soup, it was delicious. We got the seafood platter and the fried chicken and it was amazing. Service was amazing also! 10/10.
Best Seafood and Ambiance in Charleston
Not classic southern cooking (thank God for a change), but great seafood in the best-run restaurant in Charleston. Service and food, not to mention a great Espresso Martini, were first rate, and not a budget-breaker.
Professional service, great food
We were impressed with our server from the start. The white jacket(s) and dedication to ensuring our enjoyment was apparent. We enjoyed all aspects of our meal. Solid cocktails, delicious entrees and tasty desserts. Would not say this is a “must go” but would never say no to returning again.
Having had more than our fair share of underwhelming
Having had more than our fair share of underwhelming Post-Covid dining experiences at C-Town's ubiquitous "locally sourced" (code for US FOOD) eateries, staffed by college kids and chefs whose only experience was on the Low Country circuit, we reluctantly agreed to meet some old neighbors when asked to join them at Hank's. FYI, Hank's is one of the Holy City's Top 25 Restaurants according to Conde' Nast, despite the fact that they (and 23 other competitors) don't bother to participate in Charleston's Annual Restaurant Week - a real slap in the face to locals in our opinion. Arriving shortly after our friends, we were shown to a tight fitting booth, with no tablecloth, located near the restrooms. To add to our already disappointing first impression, we faced the raw bar station, where one of Hank's employees would repeatedly remove his baseball cap to arrange his hairstyle while staring at the mirrored wall. Ambience was classic downtown vibe - lots of inappropriately dressed out-of-towners (baseball caps, jeans, and "Welcome to Charleston" t-shirts, with one woman implausibly wearing Daisy Duke cutoffs and a faux fur Ushanka hat (at least the earmuffs were pulled up) - in other words, All-You-Can-Eat-Shrimp week at Red Lobster or Bubba Gump Shrimp Company customers. Our server, much to his credit, sensed our unease, and did his best to make us feel welcome by cracking a few jokes, thoroughly reviewing the menu and taking our drink order. An all-around nice guy. Soon after, a group of young women arrived with roller bags (confirming my tourist bias). Drinks arrived, but without benefit of cocktail napkins or coasters - typical Charleston amateur hour. Despite the menu proclaiming Hanks as being "voted Charleston's Top Seafood Restaurant" (by whom, it didn't say), I assumed that the actual selection of fish would be similar to most seafood restaurants around these parts (Swordfish/Tuna/Grouper/Mahi), and I was right. Since moving here, we've given up on finding Snapper, Monkfish, Arctic Char, Striped Bass, Dover Sole, Branzino, Turbot, Rainbow Trout, Tilapia Rockfish, Halibut, Sea Bass or Mackeral, just to name a few. The Broiled Seafood Sampler caught my eye, but then I noticed that the dish came with French Fries. Are you kidding me? Not even some rice or broccoli or even asparagus? Oh, wait a minute, I'd have to shell out $14 more for a side dish of three skinny stalks of asparagus. French Fries is a culinary cop-out folks, like serving bagged potato chips with the Yellowfin Tuna appetizer at Quinte Oyster Bar. So, I decided to start with some She-Crab soup (almost entirely devoid of any crab) backed up by a $16 Wedge Salad, lacking any of the traditional croutons, blue cheese crumbles or egg, but instead, came garnished with a pitiful amount of onions, rock hard bacon bits and a couple of cherry tomato halves. Ugh! At that point, I decided to pass on the main course. It was now clear, that Hank's bore no resemblance to my "best in class" SHAW'S SEAFOOD in Chicago (take a look at their website, if you want to know what a superior seafood restaurant is all about). In closing, Hank's may be C-Town's top seafood joint, but in my book, it's just another by-the-numbers, tourist dining destination, recommended to Holy City visitors by the gal running their horse-drawn carriage tour that afternoon or local "Hotel Partners". The type of customers who equate "expensive" with "good" and are willing to overlook the restaurant's egregious 2.5% "Culinary Service Charge" or their 1% credit card charge, because they're on vacation. But, who really cares what I have to say? Hank's will always be as popular as a Titanic lifeboat, and besides, there's going to be a second location soon, in that other notable Foodie enclave...Columbus, Ohio.

Born and raised in Charleston and finally had the opportunity to experience the famous Hanks Seafood. The atmosphere is friendly and upper class. The staff are approachable and helpful. Our waitor was phenomenal. It was mentioned he looked like KFC colonal Sanders and he thought it was great. He was super personable and knowledgeable. The food was exceptional of course! I had the new England clam chowder, ceviche, and we shared a seafood tower. Everything was so flavorful but I have to highly recommend the clam chowder. The base was so light and packed with flavor. Normally I would have taken pictures but I was so absorbed by the experience. I hope you enjoy as much as I did.
Everything was perfect.
Hanks may be the very best in Charleston. It is however expensive
Only available seating was at the bar.
Rich wood panelling resounds with a long history. Bouillabaisse was divine. Seafood casserole in cream sauce was amazing. Definitely be back

Hosted a dinner for 11.
Service, meals, and ambience were exceptional! Will return for sure.

Great food!!!! Sat at the bar and had some wonderful bread while waiting to get food. Shared steamed clams and fried chicken. So so good!!! I recommend
Excellent place for fish in historic Charleston.
The dining room is historically elegant. Our only complaint was only loudness from large party, sitting near our table. The menu is varied, and the food is excellent. We done mostly on vegetarian and pescatarian items.

Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.

Need to cancel a bid, not getting a response… how do I do it? |
Click on "Take off the Market Option" in your portfolio
Working on your bid? |
Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.
Process after bid is accepted. |
Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
Where do the Reservations on AppointmentTrader come from? |
Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.
What happens if my bid expires unanswered? |
Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.

Give the best answerNewbie sellers— how fast do your reservations sell?
I have some reservations coming up tomorrow that have gotten lots of views but haven’t sold yet. I haven’t made a sale yet since I just joined this week. I keep lowering the price, but am worried they won’t sell. How long did it take you to sell your first reservations? And did you have success being reimbursed by AT for no-show or cancellation fees? Just looking for a little reassurance. Thanks!

I posted a request for a reservation this Thursday between 6:30 and 8 pm and initially the potential seller said it would be fulfilled by today. Now they changed it that they will only fulfill it by 5pm that same day. Basically I would have an hour and a half to get to the restaurant. Is this allowed?

This app is a catfish and overrun by people programming “bots” and algorithms. It makes it frustrating for someone not well versed in this to have any movement. I thought this would be a fun side hustle, but unfortunately it’s become like any other “side hustle”. Don’t waste your time with this crap. Not a question, just a suggestion. Also don’t pay these fake “gurus” hundreds of dollars to teach you. Might as well sign up for a software class. 😕
