My husband and I finally made it to Hanare Sushi last night. And wow, was it worth the wait. This is undoubtedly the best discovery we've made in the OC since we found Taco Maria only last year. As both have been open for 3 years, we're clearly late to the amazing party!
The restaurant has a bar with 10 seats and 3 small tables in the front. That's it. It's very simple, very intimate. And it totally reminded us of some of the more relaxed sushi and Kaiseki restaurants we enjoyed this past May in Japan. It feels very authentic.
And the food and service are truly extraordinary. Brought us right back to Japan! The chef speaks a little English, and the servers all speak excellent English. (One of the servers was our favorite from Bluefin. She's fab!) The food is absolutely delicious. It is an omakase menu that mimics the Kaiseki restaurants we enjoyed so much in Japan. it's labeled a sushi restaurant, but it's much more than that to us. It's classic Kaiseki (seasonal) fare, served at a very high level.
I normally detest uni, except for the yellow uni found in some of the best places in Japan. The uni here, from Santa Barbara, is also pretty good--a revelation for me. I always say that any chef who can make me enjoy something I normally detest is a true gem. Hanare's chef is a true gem.
We ended up meeting 6 of the diners sitting with us at the bar, exchanging information with them for further rendezvous. That says a lot to us, too.
The omakase menu was $235 per person. We had a couple bottles of our favorite sake. Our total bill was $600 without tip. Not cheap, but it was excellent and worth every penny to our minds.
We cannot wait to return. Kudos!
