My husband and I came here for dinner on valentine's since we love Turner & George cuts of meat and often have them delivered at home so we were looking forward to it.
There was an event going on that night that wasn't aimed at couples which the restaurant called us about so we cancelled. We were then struggling to find another restaurant at short notice but we did.
They then called back later that day to say they've now cancelled the event which was a bit confusing so we rebooked our table there.
We had high expectations as we know the Turner & George and Hawksmoor brand very well.
We started with oysters which were suggested by our waiter. We were told they were baked but they weren't and they came with a spicy sausage. The one I had was covered in shell so wasn't enjoyable at all and I felt embarrassed picking shell out of my mouth in a lovely restaurant.
For starter I then had the crab angel hair pasta which was delicious! I ate every last bite. My husband had the pork belly which was such a large portion it looked like a main meal. The homemade slaw was lovely but the pork was a dry and being the belly, it really shouldn't be dry.
Then we had the rib of beef to share. We were looking forward to it as three waiters all said it was the top dish and this is the cut of beef we would usually eat. We ordered bone marrow mash potato and bone marrow sauce on the side too. The sauce was so good! Only thing is it came up so hot that it was very hard to pick up therefore we couldn't pour it on our plates or food for a while. It comes up this hot because as it starts to cool it congeals which isn't too nice. The mash was jusy mash with that sauce poured on it. The mash was smooth and silky but I would've preferred just having our sauce on the side. The pork crackling pieces in it were definitely crunchy.
The problem was the beef was so dry! I've never known a rib eye to be so dry. We couldn't even eat half of it because it was just not enjoyable. It was cooked medium rare which is what we asked for so we couldn't complain about that but it was as if it had been cooked hours before and then just flashes before serving for a good sear.
The bill was nearly £300 which we expected but the quality just wasn't there.
We won't be going here again and will stick to going to Goodman (sadly they were fully booked way in advance for valentine's).
