My friend agreed to meet me here and it was an interesting experience. It was a hybrid service situation so there is someone that takes your order and brings your food, but you get your own plates, cups, napkins, and utensils. My friend had gotten there a little earlier and ordered a couple things before I got there as the food was taking long to come out from the kitchen, which was the som tum thai and the chicken satay. We then added grandma's pork belly, crab fried rice, pad kee mao, and pla goong. Everything was very flavorful and so authentic. It looked and tasted very homemade. I liked that the menu was small, probably the smallest for a Thai restaurant that I have been to.

Good food! They have specials they rotate throughout the year. Cute place with Thai decor. Speed of service is hit and miss, but the food makes up for it!

Honestly a hole in the wall place for Thai food! We really enjoyed every dish we ordered. We were greeted by one person and the front and they only had one chef in the back. The restaurant was small and cozy, plates and cups are self serve. Considering only one chef working we were expecting to wait a lot longer since they do take out orders as well. We got the papaya salad, grandmas pork belly, crab fried rice and pad seew. All of the dishes were super flavorful. Our most favorite was the grandmas pork belly which was deep fried with an outer coating.

Gotta say they wholeheartedly deserved that Michelin!! Came here for take out one day after finding out it was only 3 blocks away from me. Got myself the pork belly since everyone else recommended it and I do love me some pork belly. It was delicious and cut into the perfect sizes that balances out on chopsticks. Sort of like popcorn shrimp but pork belly if that makes sense. The service was so lovely. Very kind folks and got to witness them interact with someone that seems to be a regular which was so cute. Want to reach that level with them. I also got the sticky rice and a Thai iced coffee. Best Thai iced coffee I've ever had truth be told. The sticky rice was fine but it didn't deter from the rest of the experience. Can't wait to come back!
Be the first to ReplyMy friends and I decided to stop by Ghin Khao for dinner on
My friends and I decided to stop by Ghin Khao for dinner on a whim and while there were a couple dishes that stood out, the meal ended up being pretty average. Starting with the good, the chicken satay was surprisingly tender and the peanut sauce was great to dip it in. Sometimes, chicken satay can be a bit on the dry side, but this was not the case here. The other table favorite was Grandma's Pork Belly. This dish was deliciously fried and crispy on the outside with the inside being tender and juicy. Everyone liked this dish so much that we ended up ordering another one for the table at the very end. Now onto the other dishes we got...the Crab Fried Rice was okay at best. I thought that it lacked a lot of flavor in general as each bite was kind of bland, especially after trying some of the other dishes we ordered. I liked that real crab was used in the fried rice, but overall this was a pretty forgettable dish. The Pad Kee Mao I thought was actually pretty decent - this was packed with lots of flavor and the portion size made it a filling dish to share with others. Finally, we ordered 2 soups for the table (Tom Kha and Tom Yum). These soups are not actually listed on the menu, but you can order them if you want...but I would not recommend doing so. Both of these soups were so incredibly sour that it made them hard to stomach. Not sure if something went wrong with preparing the soups this time around, but they tasted as though someone dumped entire cups of lemon juice into them... Overall, I thought that Ghin Khao was a decent place to get your Thai food fix. Definitely order the Grandma's Pork Belly dish as it lives up to the hype, but steer clear of the soups.

This is one of our favorite places for takeout but it has been years since we've eaten here in person. It was perfect. We ate the scallion dumplings special before we took pictures, and they were crispy on the outside and chewy inside. The grandma's pork belly was incredible. Perfectly fried and tender. Plus the sauce was an excellent balance of spicy and tangy. The cook on the shrimp in the lad nar (off menu item) was impeccable. And pad kee mao was a crowd pleaser because of the Thai basil and tomatoes. Kami Sasi is so kind and generous. We couldn't ask for better service.

My belly is filled with all flavors of Thai perfected deliciousness. I'm so happy we were finally able to stop by and have an amazing meal prepared by this talented sister and brother duo. We first met Cammy many years ago at another Thai establishment and were so excited to find out she was opening her own restaurant with her brother. But then COVID hit and our travels to Illinois came to a halt. This was the first year celebrating Christmas with Illinois family and today we decided to drive to Pilsen and try this place. Every dish was perfection but the ones that really rose to the top were the fish cakes (texture and size were perfect), papaya salad with crispy chicharon side (the balance of sweet, salty, sour, and spice was just right and the papaya was grated to the best size to soak in the flavors), grandma's pork belly (just YUM with the tastiest sauce), chicken satay was a table favorite, and that crab fried rice was simple and light and evened out all the other flavors. The noodle dishes were also excellent with lovely fresh noodles and vegetables. If you have room, the mango and sticky rice with a Thai iced tea is a great way to end the meal. What makes this place really shine is the amount of care and love put into the food and excellent customer service (even with being so short staffed this evening). If you haven't had a chance to visit, I encourage you to do so, you will be blown away by these incredible dishes. Oh, and their mom knits and has a beautiful assortment of handmade hats and scarves that you can purchase!

Pilsen may not be where you would expect to find great Thai, but Ghin Kao definitely delivers.

Be the first to ReplyCute, small restaurant.
Their exhaust wasn't working and their restaurant was filled with smoke. We had a hard time trying not to cough. Small, simple menu. We ordered the chicken satay, Thai curry fried rice, and pad see ew. All were delicious! Portion size was good. Got some leftovers to take home. Can't wait to come back and try some of the other dishes on their menu.

the som tum salad is really good, the papaya is very fresh and the sauce is amazingwe also liked the tod mun pla (fish cake), especially my toddler daughter. the sweet chili cucumber salad that came with is also very refreshingwe got the Thai fried rice with chicken, the fried rice is really good, the chicken is a bit too saltypad see ew with tofu is amazing too, another kids favouriteGrandmas pork belly is our favourite, and I think it tastes A LOT better dining in than the take out we ordered. It is fried to order, and very lightly battered, and juicy inside
Be the first to ReplyThe food here is SO bomb.
Honestly, we stumbled on this place by accident, about 4 years ago, and we got addicted. From the outside, it looks a bit sketch with the graffiti and tinted windows (their interior/exterior design could honestly use a makeover), but that's what makes it the best kept secret in Pilsen!!! The textures are perfect, the flavors are spot on, the portions are generous for the price. All around no fuss. It's hands down the best Thai street food I've ever eaten. Crab fried rice-bomb. Grilled pork shoulder- juicy, charred, slightly sweet. bomb. Grandma's pork belly- you think it's just pork belly and you could just make it at home but its honest better than your mom could even make.Just go there. I now live across the country and I still miss their food. Haven't been since 2020, so prices may have gone up a lot, but in earlier times it definitely felt like they didn't skimp on portions. In my experience its more of a grab n' go place, but if they really redid their decor and decked it out with really nice seating, they could easily become a super nice restaurant!
Be the first to ReplyNo BS Thai food.
Really good. Really fresh. Get the papaya salad and the chicken thigh. Don't come here if you not getting the sticky rice. You gotta get it.

After reading all the positive reviews on the place, we decided to try it out on a Friday evening. We ordered the pad siew, the crab fried rice, the tod mun pla, and the krapow gai to go, but when they gave us the food, I was wondering where is the rest of it? They were very small portions. The tod mun pla was way overpriced for 5 pieces of dried fish cakes in a tiny bag, and the krapow gai only filled up half of a pint container. The crab fried rice had almost no taste to it, while the pad siew was a bit salty. Perhaps this was an off night for them, but this place does not live up to the hype.
