Frontera Grill Chicago Reviews from The Last Year
Great margarita the ambiance wasn't great at all as i was
Great margarita the ambiance wasn't great at all as i was facing the spot all the servers gathered and waited so lots of movement which was distracting. The food was average - i could have gotten the same thing for half the price in 100 other restaurants in the city. Definitely not the quality and experience from 20 yrs ago.
What a great experience we had great service.
Our server was informative and also funny. We had questions and he guided us to the right choice. The food was spot on and was authentic. The atmosphere was festive and felt real. Just all around good vibe. This is a must visit.
Visiting Chicago during the National Restaurant Show.
Our group went to Frontera Grill for the 1st time and it didn't disappoint. The food was excellent overall. The classic Frontera ceviche was so refreshing and the trio ceviche offered different seafood spice levels and taste. Service was very good but there was a gap in time between appetizers and main entree dishes. We were a big party of 12 so it didn't bother us too much. The champagne margarita was an interesting twist and as a champagne drinker I don't think I cared for the mash up between the 2 drinks but that's just personal preference. I ordered the skirt steak tacos with the homemade tortillas and beans. The skirt steak was marinated, tender and had great flavor. The beans were some of the better beans I've had in awhile. Finally, we ordered several desserts to share and my favorite was the coconut horchata cake. Overall 4.5
Food and drinks are excellent (ceviche especially).
Service not so excellent - they also include a 20% gratuity fee on top of your bill... regardless of service. I would come back but will sit at the bar next time.
Fantastic Guacamole!
I have a few of Rick Bayless' cookbooks and watched his TV shows, so I was excited to go to Frontera Grill while we were in Chicago. We had an excellent lunch. First of all, the guacamole was fantastic. The food was so hearty and flavorful. The Puebla-style enchiladas were delicious, served with black beans. We all agreed that the tortillas are uniquely flavorful. Now we want to go next door to Topolobampo!!

We were so excited to visit Chicago and finally try one of Rick Bayless' restaurants after watching finding his cooking shows years ago. The menu has something for everyone and there are enough dishes to satisfy several visit. The food itself deserves five stars and enjoyed a started, two entrees and a dessert, plus four alcoholic beverages. However, service is a big part of the dining experience and Frontera really missed expectations on this Saturday evening. One of us ordered a beer right away but it took another 20 minutes - after asking two different floor staff to send our server over - to order my cocktail. The server wanted our food order but told him we'd wait until drinks arrived. Then, it took about another 20 minutes to get anyone to come over and take our food order. When it came time to pay, it took extensive amount of time to get the bill, then I watched the server go to the kitchen with our credit card thinking there must be a system kiosk in the back. However, when I next saw him about ten minutes later, he headed to the front of the restaurant where the kiosk is located but he didn't return for another 10+ minutes so we waited about 20 minutes to get our credit card. Aside from the extended wait, no one these days expects to see their credit card disappear for this long for no reason. I shared my disappointment with service with one of the hostesses on the way out and she acknowledged and apologized adding that this was one of their most senior servers. Perhaps this server was just having a bad night, or is too comfortable with his ability to be aware of the status at his table. But, there is no way this server would have received a 20% gratuity had it not been a mandatory add. A really disappointing event and not one we intend to revisit again anytime soon.
Not as good as we hoped for
We were really looking forward to eating here, but it wasn’t as good an experience as we hoped. We felt rushed the whole time. The host was not very friendly, but she showed us to our table. It’s a very loud restaurant. Almost as soon as we were seated the waiter asked us if we wanted any appetizers. We joked that we hadn’t even looked at the menu. He return a couple minutes later and asked again. We said we wanted to order drinks. We had a margarita which was very good, but I don’t like tequila so I ordered a martini. He said they don’t have olives, so I got it on the rocks. The $17 drink was literally 1/2 inch of vodka on the rocks. When he brought the drinks, we ordered the enchiladas potosinas appetizer to share, and the special short rib mole negro and the seafood pozole verde for entrees. The waiter asked if we want it all at the same time. Seriously? Um, no. We want it in corses like we ordered it. The enchiladas and short rib mole were very good. Excellent flavors and the mashed potatoes were perfect with the short ribs. The pozole was just ok. It seemed a bit bland and there was only a single scallop in the whole dish. For $38, it seemed light on all the seafood. Overall the food was very good, but a bit expensive. However the service was rushed. We felt like they wanted to turn the table as fast as possible. The “martini” was a joke. I’m glad we tried it but I doubt I would return.
Delicious tortillas and proteins, truly enjoyed our food.
However, service was quite slow, so the automatic 20% service charge was frustrating on top of the already high prices.
not what it was
Frontera used to be a favorite but it has gone down hill based on my last meal and I'm afraid it may be living off its reputation. The ingredients were top quality but there was no depth or complexity (or spice) in the flavor, which was decidedly bland and uninteresting. And the blue agave margarita was no better than the house margarita in a chain restaurant

I had high expectations for this restaurant, given its connection to Rick Bayless. The menu offered a classic Mexican food lineup, including an entirely separate menu dedicated to vegetarian dishes. My choice was the portobello mushrooms for tacos, which were well-prepared and delicious when assembled. They were generous with the tortillas, too. While the food was classic Mexican, not particularly elevated, it was undeniably fresh and of good quality. The margaritas were a highlight for me, especially since they were made tableside, adding a touch of elegance to the experience. However, I felt the prices were a bit steep for the standard dishes offered. Overall, it's a good spot if you're looking for reliable and tasty Mexican cuisine with excellent drinks.

OMG. This place is SO good!!! We had the margaritas which were a bit small but delicious, the guacamole (the best I've ever had) and the ceviche trio which was to die for. I had the pollo y rosas which was creamy and tasty and the perfect portion size. Service was friendly and attentive. We had to wait an hour to get seated with a reservation and it was absolutely worth the wait!!! Can't wait to go back!

We had the quesadillas to start, which were great and had a fun sauce. I then had the veggie tacos which were SO filling, and, possibly for the first time ever in my experience, proportioned well. Service was great and everything came and left the table quickly.
Meh
A big menu, so that was nice, but of my food, and the two other things I tasted, it was very average - which was a letdown after a cool menu. The drinks menu pretty small. The interior is very cool, although the table was a bit squished. Staff was nice enough - but Id venture elsewhere
Always a top spot for me in Chicago.
This time, I had the mid-week special, which is a braised short rib in mole. It did not disappoint. Service is always top-notch from people who know and love the food.
Best Mexican Meal in the Midwest
During a previous trip to Chicago my spouse and I had the pleasure of getting a meal to go from Frontera Grill. The food was so good then that we knew we had to come back during our most recent trip to Chicago, and honestly in-person it was one of the best meals I've had. Not only were the appetizer salsas and drinks delicious, the melas fresh and flavorful, but the service at Frontera is top notch. They are quick, efficient, and polite. 100% we will be back on our next trip.
Little brother to Michelin Star restaurant upstairs with same James Beard winning chef and a comfort menu to please!
Frontera Grill is one of two restaurants operated in the same building on N. Clark St. by James Beard winning chef Rick Bayless. It’s big brother and Michelin Star sibling is upstairs - Topolbampo. But Frontera is great! Book well in advance (RESY). We had Tamal appetizer, mushroom tacos and the Carne Asada. All outstanding. The fried plantains with the Carne Asada were especially great. Also the chipotle sauce was fantqstic. Great Lovely atmosphere of people just there to enjoy and have fun. Couples on dates to impress. And desert - if you have room - is worth it. We had the Tres Leches cake with banana ice cream. Going to be eating light for a few days to compensate but it was definitely worth it.
Always reliable. Great service. Great food.
This is our go-to place when we need to have a meal, don’t want to make a fuss, and want to be given great options. We always have a good meal here and the service is always top notch. On a cold winter night the tortilla soup hits the spot…I don’t know what is in that broth but it is delicious. The Pozole is excellent as well. If I had a choice I’d go for dinner or lunch rather than brunch. Don’t know what else to say: Go!
Flavorful Mexican Feast
Had an awesome time at Frontera Grill! The Mexican food was packed with flavor and satisfied my craving for authentic dishes. From the zesty tacos to the mouthwatering guacamole, every bite was a taste sensation. The laid-back atmosphere and friendly service added to the enjoyment. If you're into tasty Mexican fare without the fuss, this spot is a winner. Definitely going back for more flavorful fiestas!
Adequate and disappointing
My wife and I have gone to Frontera Grill several times and Topolo once, but these were several years ago before we moved away. We have great admiration for Rick Bayless and were excited to go for a very special occasion dinner. The experience was mixed, but overall a big disappointment given our expectation. Our service was professional, but not warm. The Corunda Michoacana appetizer was excellent, a little spice, some sweetness, and complex flavors. For dinner I had the specialty Cochinita Pibil. The pork was intender and the flavors were good. Probably a 4-4.5 rating. She ordered the trout and was disappointed. While trout should be tender, this seemed overcooked with some mushiness. And it was visually not attractive. Most confounding were the Margaritas. We have his recipes and they make great margaritas. The Topolo we ordered was extremely sweet and the server said that was just the way they were. The Blue Agave marg was better, but very sour. I asked about getting a Grand Marnier shot to sweeten it and that would have been $11. These were drinks were very disappointing. So while the entire experience was adequate, this visit definitely ended our longing desire to eat there again.
Annual stop
We come every year when we visit Chicago. This year was for brunch. Breakfast enchiladas and Puebla style (mole) enchiladas for the win. And a mezcal cocktail for me :)
Highly Recommend the Champagne Margarita
We stopped in on a Friday evening as we had extra time before our dinner reservations. We lucked out and got the last two spots at the bar (in front of the amazing artwork/decor). Gerry was a great bartender talking me into getting the Champagne Margarita. It was refreshing and the bubbles definitely adding to the cocktail. My husband got the Blue Agave margarita which was also very good.
Don't order the "suckling pig" (aka chicken)
I was really looking forward to the Lechon, slow-cooked suckling pig in guajillo barbecue sauce) and at $35, it really should have been good. Unfortunately, it tasted like chicken and I seriously suspect it was. I have had suckling pig before and it is very tender and usually served with the skin. This meat had no fat and little taste. The dish was also drowned in barbecue sauce making it even harder to detect any of the taste that was left. I think I only ate about 1/3 of it. When I asked the server to confirm this was the correct dish, she said it was and asked if I did not like it. She made some statement about "can I get you something else?" but this made no sense, as I was not going to send this back and waste $35 for nothing, only to wait longer and pay more for something else I might not like. I then just asked her to bring me some salt, to which she stated "certainly!" and then NEVER DID!!!! A manager came over to ask about the dish and I told her I already talked to someone else about it. Eventually I had to ask a runner for salt and he told our server who only then brought it. Also, generally a $107 bill for lunch for 2, for 4 total items is a bit crazy. The Topo Margarita was good, therefore I will give this review 2 stars instead of 1. To put into perspective how disappointing this lunch was, I spent $700 at Topolobampo the night before and I did NOT think that was overpriced. But $107 for the lunch I just had at Frontera was robbery. It is clear to me that this establishment has gone downhill. For a place with such a great reputation, they fell WAY too short on quality as well as service for me to give them another chance.
So glad to have retuned
From the moment we sat down and ordered our Topolo margaritas through the entire fabulous dinner. We couldn’t have enjoyed it more. The guacamole with avocados grown just for the Frontera group in Michoacan Mexico was heavenly as were the delicious corn chips served along side of it. The tamale soup with melted cheese and grilled chicken was as enticing as we remembered it from previous visits. The entrées were superb, and the service was great.
