FOB Kitchen in Oakland is a must-go brunch/date spot!
Chef’s kiss! FOB Kitchen, in Oakland's vibrant Telegraph, helmed by Michelin Bib Gourmand recipient Chef Janice Dulce, offers a unique fusion of Filipino heritage and modern culinary artistry. From the delectable Shanghai Lumpia to the Lechon Kawali, each dish is a masterpiece. Beyond exceptional flavors, FOB Kitchen embodies community warmth, akin to Filipino gatherings, and stands as a trailblazer for queer women of color—a cultural celebration in the heart of Oakland. This is a date spot, a place to celebrate, or a spot to meet up for one of their unique cocktails/mocktails. I’m already looking forward to my next visit.

The most chaotic meal I've ever been served...completely incompetent wait staff. Day menu is a very limited brunch only. Food was served haphazardly and piece-meal without apology. My meal had 4 items. Waitress brought one item on a plate along with my friend's appetizer. Eventually she brought a plate with the other 3 items, but still didn't bring my friend's meal. Later, she brought my friend's meal with part of it missing. Later she brought the missing item with another dish we didn't order. She took it away but still charged us for it...no excuses, just really poor service and management.

Excellent dining experience. I am not the World's foremost expert on Fillipino Cuisine, but this place rocks. FULL BAR thank you very much. Pliny the Elder in bottles at the time. The service was excellent. The waitress suggested a Family Style order and to pick 4 entrees for our party of 6. Great call. The Pork Adobo was delicious. Roasted corn, yummy!. The list goes on. Even has off street parking. Winner!

Living in the Temescal District during my college years the district was a "Sleeping Giant" about to wake up. I mean that really. Even though from the outlook the district looked sketchy at best I always felt safe in that district. The change in the district started happening in the 2010s decade, which was about more than 10 years after I graduated college. There were more modern, unique, and diverse eateries popping up. This made the Temescal District alive and vibrant. FOB Kitchen's modern approach to Filipino food represents the modern transformation in the Temescal District. The first time I came here was Saturday in March for brunch. The menu for brunch is different than dinner as the silogs are served during brunch. There were two dishes I was deciding about ordering - the longanisa hash or the lechon kawali silog. I asked my server what she recommended and she said the lechon kawali. I also ordered the crispy chicken skins and pandan ice tea. The crispy chicken skins at FOB Kitchen were similar to chicharrón, but much better. Whereas chicharrón can sometimes have an airy texture similar to rice cakes the chicken skins had that crunch with a slight oiliness that I like. I was excited about the lechon kawali. Even though this dish was delicious I wasn't blown away. I could have based my rating on the lechon kawali and that rating would have been 3-stars. I wanted to give this place another chance. Why? First this place is close to my apartment. Second they are layers in a restaurant. Those "layers" consisted of other dishes served at a restaurant. Even though sometimes I review based on one item I wanted to give this place another chance as it was listed in the Bib Gourmand in the Michelin Guide. The next Saturday I came here I ordered the daing silog, which is a boneless bangus over rice. When this dish was served I knew already this bangus dish was different from other bangus I've ordered from other eateries. Most bangus tend to be overfried due to the dark brown color of the meat that makes it too jerky. The bangus at FOB Kitchen is fried to a golden brown. After taking a bite of the bangus it was moist. However the best part of the bangus is the fatty belly. I wasn't disappointed at all with the fatty belly of the bangus served from FOB Kitchen. Bar none the best bangus I ever had due to the combination of the fatty belly and moist meat. After eating the bangus I began this "rollercoaster ride" of items I ordered from FOB Kitchen. The next time I came here in was April when I ordered the fried chicken silog. This might be a small detail what I noticed was the fried egg. In traditional Filipino cooking meat, vegetables, and egg are cooked well done. Fried eggs in Filipino cooking tend to be way overcooked. When it comes to fried egg I like my yolk runny as porn not a chalky texture. The fried egg on the fried chicken silog was served sunny side up. Two weeks later I came her again for Saturday brunch. This time I ordered the longanisa hash. Generally I don't like hash items for breakfast because when all the items are combined this dish turns mushy. The longanisa hash at FOB Kitchen is different as each item is cooked separately - the sweet longanisa, crispy diced potatoes, and sunny side fried egg. Eating this dish provides different flavors and textures. Due to a different menu I wanted to try dinner at FOB Kitchen. I came here on a Saturday night in June to mainly order sinigang, which is my favorite Filipino dish of all time due to the tangy sour taste from the tamarind. If I'm going to pay for a dish I don't want a taste from home due to the price. Something unique has to be special to justify the price. The sinigang from FOB Kitchen has a meaty broth that I never had in a sinigang before with a touch a slight tamarind seasoning. I won't say this is the best sinigang I ever had but this dish is still thumbs up in view. The next time I came here was on a Saturday evening during the July 4 Weekend. I ordered the bistek. I ordered this dish to test the traditional approach versus the modern technique in Philippines cooking. Traditional bistek in Filipino cuisine is thinly sliced and cooked well done. In addition the type of cut is sirloin. At FOB Kitchen the steak is not thinly cut yet the meat is grilled medium rare. This bistek dish still pays homage to the traditional bistek due to the tangy, sweet onions. What makes this bistek dish stand out is the use of the picanha, which is the cut of steak you see at a Brazilian steakhouse buffet. The picanha adds the fat that is missing in traditional bistek. If I had stop going here after my first visit then I would have missed out a lot of dishes that I enjoyed especially the bangus, which is the best dish at FOB Kitchen. For any cuisine to preserve it needs to be modern yet pay homage to tradition. At FOB Kitchen you can see the modernization of Filipino cuisine.

Possibly the best restaurant I have encountered in my years in Oakland! Absolutely delicious on all counts. Flavourful milkfish, delicious fried chicken egg rice Silago, and that mango ice tea was the real hero! Scrumptious! Above all, great service and very kind staff. Highly recommend!

Well, it's nearly a year since we went to FOB Kitchen for Oakland's Restaurant Week. We knew that FOB Kitchen was popular and we made sure to show up when they opened so we would be one of the first ones in. With the pre-fixe option offered with the Restaurant Week we were entertained with some nice dishes offering a good mix of edibles with varying flavors. We had the Shanghai Lumpia, their Jicama Salad, the Pork Adobo, and the Pancit Sotanghon. Our dessert was Turon, a banana lumpia and our included drinks were an iced tea and Calamansi, a citrusy juice. The service staff was great in explaining what our options were and describing the dishes when they arrived. No single dish was large but with the number of plates you share there was plenty to eat without having to waddle out. The Shanghai Lumpia was very tasty while the Pork Adobo was more protein and comforting. The Pancit was a very nice change of pace as was the Jicama Salad while the Turon was a great way to end the meal. The interior of the restaurant is basically all along one wall. When it is dark outside the interior of the place is also a bit dim. If you haven't had Filipino food, give FOB Kitchen a try.

This is my second visit to FOB. The first time was wonderful. Loved that it stuck more to authentic Filipino dishes instead of fusion; we’ll maybe a twist. Finally, a good Filipino restaurant in Oakland. I went again for Oakland Restaurant Week and was not one bit disappointed! It was nice to see a diverse crowd of customers. The menu was very generous. The service was excellent! It was a rainy night and it was packed with customers waiting outside. They provided huge umbrellas to keep them dry. That was thoughtful!

We tried this restaurant largely because it had been reviewed very well in our local newspaper. The restaurant has a welcoming atmosphere with very good service. We had the ribs and the brisket. Both dishes came with a large mound of rice and egg on top, and a small salad. We found both meats to be a little tough, and the sauce a bit too much vinegar for our taste. The wine on tap, and the cocktail were both food. We're glad that we tried this restaurant, but in the end, have decided that the food would not entice us to come back.

We were so sad when Juhu beach club closed, but Fob kitchen, which moved in that spot, is like Juhu on steroids! Women owned/operated this place has great music playing, hip and mixed oakland crowd. Lots of vegetarian and gluten free options. We enjoyed sugar snap peas - crunchy and delicately seasoned with fish sauce, wings - crispy and sticky, ribs - fell off bone, purple gnocchi in coconut, and a mango rice coconut desert. delicious! Plus cocktails. Isabelle was our server - a familiar face from Adesso. We’ll be regulars at Fob kitchen.

Bay Area isn’t full of Filipino restaurant and if you want to try this is one of the better places for sure although they are probably not aiming for most authentic one. Good cocktails too.

This place was simply terrific!! We went for Brunch (I would have preferred to go at dinner to try the adobo and other great dishes) but the brunch meal was just so good. First of all the parking is such a CHALLENGE. Yes there is a small parking lot in front of the restaurant but it is pretty tough to get a spot there. Hubby circled the block over and over until he was able to get something on the street. When I entered the place it was so TOTALLY packed. There is only about 35 or so seats in the place so it is pretty small I arrived after 1:00 on a Saturday and the line was outside of the door. I was seated at a great table so I could view the cooking going on. We had an amazing waitperson - we loved her! We started with drinks - service for the cocktails was a bit slow (beer and tap wine). They put this KILLER hot sauce on the table which we bought a bottle to take home. We ordered: - Lumpia - OK OK we have had Lumpia at many places including the Philippines, I make it at home and am proud of my dish. Their lumpia is the BEST EVER. HOT off of the fryer and so delicious! Better than mine! - Tapa Silog - wonderful dish which includes salad, rice, egg and the most tender meat. I thought I needed a knife to cut the meat - nope did not need it! - Tortang talong - delicious simple eggplant omelet. They serve San Miguel beer which my husband loved and I ordered the wine on tap (Sauv Blanc). They served my wine in Schott Zwiesel glass - pretty nice as I love having my wine served in a decent glass! We cannot wait to go back and try other dishes - love to try the dinner menu!
