I visited here last week with some friends to celebrate my graduation and had such a good time! Our server Rosario was amazing and he had amazing knowledge of the menu. The sashimi was to die for! The atmosphere was perfect, if you're looking for an Asian fusion option in Detroit this is your place! We will definitely be back.

Zuzu... TL;DR: So the ambiance is decent and the location is great. The food was just ok, nothing to write home about. To be honest, I prefer my local cheap takeout restaurants in comparison. Here's why: 1) I get what this place is trying to exude... the presence of bouncers (probably for the "Upstairs" bar/nightclub), the hosts at the entrance that give off the "I don't care" and "you're not on the list" club vibe (until you tell them you have a reservation)... they're trying to seem "cool" and "exclusive". This is reinforced by all the bottles of Armand de Brignac (Ace of Spades) on the walls and at the bar. They're appealing to a certain demographic. I get it, just not my thing. It's very Instagrammable, though, if that's your thing! 2) When we walked in, aside from the aforementioned, they immediately brought us outside... it was cooling down out and we were not planning on that (it's early May). When I made the OpenTable reservation, I wasn't asked about a seating preference. I mean, yeah, outside is a "cool" vibe, but we didn't want the cool temps. Plus it was somewhat windy. When we asked to be seated inside, they almost seemed genuinely inconvenienced by that request. They got us seated inside, but at THE MOST UNCOMFORTABLE booth "thing" that I've ever sat upon in my life. They are the roundish booths off to the left when you walk in. Whoever thought those were a good idea should be fired. 3) As I said, the food was fine. And the drinks weren't bad (not amazing but not bad). But the prices? WOW. SUPER pricey for what you get. But that's the thing... the food is FINE. Not amazing. Definitely not spectacular! For those prices, it better blow me away. Which it didn't. I'll do a quick rating of what we got out of 5 points: *Rangoon Rangoon (2/5) *tasted like straight crab, not what I was expecting* *Golden Wagyu Croquettes (4/5) *although they were more "meatball" than "croquette"...* *Zuzu California Roll (3/5) *Lobster Tempura (4/5) *Ora King + Avocado (3/5) *Five Gold Curry (3.5/5) *Beef Yaki Udon Noodle (2.5/5) *Sailor Moon Mai Tai (3/5) *2 points for the creativity* *11, Not 10 (2.5/5) *Strawberry Swing (3/5) *pricy for a mocktail* 4) Last thing... the tip. I didn't know that the tip was already included in the bill, nor was it disclosed. That's a bit unusual for small parties (3 people). There was also no immediate indication on the bill that it was already included, which seems somewhat fraudulent. So I tipped 20% on top of the bill which already included tip. Let's just say the waitress got a great tip that night. I didn't really realize it until I did the math in the shower the next morning. The "11, Not 10" didn't taste the best, but it was definitely strong! Anyways, just be aware of that. If you're staying in downtown Detroit and want mediocre Asian food in a semi-neat atmosphere at a premium price, this place is for you!
Be the first to ReplyThe place is very cool looking.
Interesting light fixtures and mirrored ceiling. We had a couple of staff wait on us and provided great customer service. We started with walnut shrimp and gyoza. Both were excellent. I got the miso sea bass which was the best sea bass I've ever had and a nice sized piece. My husband had beef noodles which were also very good. We got the corn side dish which was an interesting take on corn and very tasty. Will definitely be back.

Be the first to ReplyI really had high expectations of this restaurant.
I've heard things from friends and seen some amazing looking reels on social media. A friend and I decided to give it a go! First off, Kudos to the staff as our reservation was the weekend prior to Downtown hosting the NFL draft and they reached out in advance to recommend parking as construction was underway. What we didn't anticipate was street closures and construction impeding pedestrian traffic as well. In the end, we were 40 minutes late for our reservation and they kindly accommodated us. The atmosphere was classy and gave warm yet intriguing ambiance. Beautiful decor and even the restroom was detailed. During our meal the A/c starting blasting cold air from an overhead vent was much threatened my experience because it was mid April in Michigan so it wasn't even hot. I've forgotten our server's name (apologies) but he explained they were doing a new test menu and for that reason no substitutions were allowed because they wanted diners to get the full Experience Zuzu. He recommended their moscato (which I thoroughly enjoyed) and What We Do Is secret. For "appies" we had the Pan Fried Gyoza (wagyu beef dumplings) which were not only full of flavor and delicious but a nice treat since most sushi restaurants usually offer pork/shrimp/chicken and Crispy Rice Spicy Tuna which weren't very spicy but equally delicious. The chicken skewers were tender and tasty with a delicious sauce as an accompaniment.I also tried the Thai Coconut Curry Soup which tasted a little different than others I've had, mainly because it had the taste of fish sauce, but it was a nice enjoyable blend and again not very spicy. The curry soup featured a mushroom medley containing King Oyster, Chantrelle and maybe Enoki which were all very good. Shockingly the lobster tempura roll and beef udon noodles were unremarkable, which is where I really expected to have my socks knocked off. Overall, although I was a bit disappointed in the sushi- the dumplings, the Thai Coconut Soup and those Chicken Skewers were my favorite part of "The Experience". The price was little heftier than I would pay at the establishments I'd usually patronize for the items listed above, but I also attribute that to part of the experience. I'd give them another chance as I'm curious to taste one of their feature from their charcoal oven menu.
Be the first to ReplyGreat flare, really good food.
Nice for special occasions. Plan to spend at least $100pp. Will definitely go back and would like to try Happy hour as well. Went upstairs to the after party. DJ was nice. Very nice atmosphere. They have valet but was unavailable due to NFL Draft prep. Paid for structure across the street and had to walk over. Service was decent but would've liked separate checks for our group. Appetizers and sushi were delicious (gyoza and the short rib egg rolls). Everyone enjoyed their food. Niece said Branzino was underwhelming. The little bite I had was good to me. Sea bass was perfect! Drinks were really good! Will definitely be back for happy hour, to sit outdoors or for a special occasion!

Went for our anniversary dinner and let me tell you we will NEVER be going back. If you're going to present yourself as an upscale restaurant, make sure you're actually one. The sushi was horrible and def not fresh. Ordered the lobster roll and Asian pear and both were so dry and had zero flavor. I have tried almost every sushi restaurant in town and I can tell you that Kroger sells better sushi. I felt like I was eating leftover sushi from 2 days ago. My side of miso corn was the only decent dish I ordered (if you mess up corn just shut down). The only reason I'm ok with giving this place a 1 star is because my husband loved his Wagyu Tomahawk and we enjoyed the drinks. Save yourself a hefty bill and go to any other restaurant.

One of the coolest new places in Detroit! It's near the river walk so you can go for a walk before or after dinner. The restaurant itself is pretty small but has such beautiful decor. It's warm red colors and has fun art work on the wall. There's bar seating, high tops, booths and regular tables. The staff was very kind and helpful. They were attentive but not coming by too often. The food was really good! We had one of the yellowtail rolls which was very fresh and flavorful. The meatballs were delicious and cooked perfectly. The tomahawk was really tasty but sadly overcooked a little bit. That was the only down side to this place. There were so many fun drinks to pick from. One we had was in a sailor mood cup which was so cute! Overall its a really yummy place and perfect for a date night.

The eggrolls were really good but the sushi was very underwhelming. The walnut shrimp wasn't really good at all. The whole experience was underwhelming honestly. I don't really know what I was expecting but I'm not in a rush to come back. My bartender kind of had her head in the clouds. She was doing some of everything at once. Maybe I'll try it again for dinner but I'm not in a rush.
Be the first to ReplyZuzu is a very good but interesting restaurant! Not to be
Zuzu is a very good but interesting restaurant! Not to be dramatic, but upon entering my nose practically got body slammed by the over-powering pungent vanilla scent that had a certain humidity to it. Seriously this scent was the strongest fragrance I have ever smelt in any sort of hospitality environment. (I was reluctant on leaving a review but I am at home hours later and the weird vanilla aroma is glued to my skin as if I was back in 6th grade and just bought my first can of AXE from the local CVS). Very very unpleasant aroma to lounge in after a nice meal. The interior design is impeccably timeless and has a beautiful maximalist vibe that matches the branding throughout the establishment. Everything felt custom and luxurious. The music on the other hand... very intense house music for a Monday evening high end meal that felt interrupting to a $28 bowl of noodles and private conversation. I mean I love some John Summit but personally don't find his music fitting for a meal after a long day! The food and drinks though... extremely impressive!!! Crispy rice tuna and noodle dishes were so so so amazing, and had full flavors that you won't find at comparable restaurants in the area. The drink menu has very unique beverages that definitely stand out compared to the usual "sophisticated" offers downtown. Overall, if you are looking for a place to drink and dine before going to a bar/club or celebrating something exciting I would 100% recommend Zuzu over other local restaurants.

Overall review : A restaurant trying really hard to be a high end, Vegas-like experience, but falling short for a myriad of reasons. To start, my boyfriend made a reservation for 4 on a Saturday night, and after a last minute work meeting we needed to either push back our reservation or cancel. Want to cancel your reservation 48 in advance ? Be prepared for a $25 CHARGE PER PERSON FEE. A charge seems reasonable but $25 per person is absurd. We were able to push back your reservation to 8:00pm so we were not hit with the fee. We get to the restaurant on time for our reservation and half of our party is at the bar because the arrived early. The waitress says they need to cash out before we are seated. They cash out, but then the waitress makes us wait an additional 10-15mins before we are seated. We were taken upstairs. Which is a smaller setting than their main seating area downstairs. Upstairs was a bar/club acting as a main dining area. Think bright lights, vip areas, and a dj. We sit our table and it is immediately extremely wobbly, the chairs are cheap, my boyfriend thinking that if he leaned back it would snap. Our waiter fixed the table with some napkins but it was wobbly our whole dinner. We ordered the What we Do in Secret and it was a very fun drink, tasted fine but the color/bubbles is what attracted us to it. We ordered the crab rangoons and they were 2/10. No cream cheese, just all crab. Food overall was fine, but nothing special. This restaurant prides itself as being an upscale experience but the food did not cut it. I enjoyed my lobster tempura role and curry noodles, but it was nothing special. What I really did not enjoy about this "high end upscale restaurant" is that the whole time while we were eating staff members were prepping the upstairs to be a club. Moving tables, taking their black table cloths off of the wobbly tables, what we later learned were literally just old picnic tables. Club servers were coming in for their shifts, dressed in sweats and lounging by the bar. Stacking chairs, prepping the dj, all while we are trying to enjoy our meal. We were rushed out of there too. We had 90 mins to enjoy our meal but at 9, 45 mins after we were sat the music gets louder and the space gets darker. I hated that our food came out so fast, I felt like we had no time to enjoy ourselves. Literally 10 mins after putting in our order it all came out. Would not go back and would not recommend. Detroit is filled with so many other wonderful restaurants and you take this one off your list!

Be the first to ReplyFood and drinks were good.
We had the Scallop Roll, Rangoon, Gyoza and Walnut Shrimp. I would rate them in the following order from most favorite to least: Gyoza, Rangoon, Walnut Shrimp and Scallop Roll. We had two cocktails to start - the Little Dream (very apple forward) and Sei Less (delish!) and also had two bottles of wine. Service was consistent and the dรฉcor was beautiful. I really wanted to give our dining experience 5/5 Stars but the issue was with the final bill. I am fine if establishments want to add gratuity to the bill - I typically tip well above 20% anyways, and will most times leave additional gratuity when it is already added into the bill. However, POST SOMEWHERE on the menu, or have your servers share with the tables that gratuity is included. I feel like there is a bit of sneaky-ness or misguided when this is not shared. Needless to say - our base Bill of $254, with 20% was $320, to which we then tipped an additional 25% on (because we typically tip over the norm). We did not notice the gratuity until we had left the restaurant and returned to our hotel for the night. My suggestion to restaurant in general on this topic - Do Better. With all of the new restaurants popping up around Detroit, I likely won't be back to Zuzu any time soon.
