Duckfat South Portland Reviews from The Last Year
We knew we'd hit in a winner as the wait was 45 mins long
We knew we'd hit in a winner as the wait was 45 mins long at 2 pm on a Tuesday! We patently waited (with everyone else) finally scoring a table outside (which was great, 'cause the inside is almost all elbow-to-elbow bar seating). We had the Reuben (delicious) the Poutine (super bad for you, but what a great way to clog your arteries!) & the ceasar with smoked duck (also delicious & marginally healthier, lol). Staff was friendly & efficient. The one thing I did not like is the "addition" to my bill of 3.5% for staff supplementary wages. I topped another 15%, making it 18.5%. Normally in a busy, great place like this, I tip 20% or more; In this case, I tipped less as I do not enjoy my monetary decisions being made for me. Duckfat would do far better trusting appreciative patrons.

we were lucky that we could get a table on a weekday morning while we were driving down from Acadia. poutine is a must--everything is super crispy and balanced. we also got sandwiches which were delicious and filling. service was amazinggggg and we got to chat with our servers who we genuinely feel enjoy working at this restaurant. fun vibes on the patio. put your name down and take a walk around downtown, worth the wait!

I've been to Duck Fat several times, however this is the first and last time this year. I had the poutine and it was expensive and terrible. The French fries were over cooked and there was hardly any gravy on them, when I asked for more the waitress brought over a small container which I was charged $3.00 for. My husband had the turkey sandwich it was dry and his fries were not good either. Not sure if there are new owners or new cooks. Won't be back

Scratch kitchen with everything made in house including the sodas. Small inside, but great bustling vibe and nice outdoor seating in the front. Had the roasted turkey panini with avocado and duck fat fries. Can you holler "that was damn good!" Yep it was. Service was incredibly fast. Like snapped my head around fast tonight.
Delicious!!!! Servers were really nice as well.
Lobster roll and Rueben were unreal- so fresh and good. We stopped in and totally lucked out. Loved it

The food was wonderful,Prices were fair and I would love to come back but they NEED to teach the bus boys/girls basic sanitation practices. We were sitting at a shared table, which I am totally fine with. When they were done instead of spraying a rag and then proceeding to clean the table the young girl took the spray bottle and sprayed the table..I can assure you on a windy day In Portland that sanitizer is just going to jump off the table and right in the faces AND FOOD of the people who are downwind. I was so shocked I didn't know ow what to say. You can VISIBLY SEE THE SPRAY LAND ON US AND OUR FOOD. Young people don't know how to do basic things anymore like how to clean a table and it just irks me.
Shut the front door, such an amazing eatery with local farm
Shut the front door, such an amazing eatery with local farm ingredients! You cannot come here and not get the poutine. Definitely get the poutine and homemade sodas! They are both so so delicious. I also recommend their sauce flight for their fries that are fried in duck fat as well as their infamous milkshakes! We also got the pork cubano sandwich which had great, toasty bread. However, it was a bit too smokey for us and kind of overpowered the taste of the whole sandwich. I see why this place is so popular in Portland, definitely a must try when visiting the area. Just account for having to wait to get seated!

Fries were really yummy! I'm going to get the large next time I come! Seemed very busy, staff was nice.

Wow. Wowowowowow. Everything we ate was 10/10. We had to get the poutine and it did not disappoint. The fries were crisp and rich and the gravy and curds were great. We had a cookies and cream milkshake to split and it was such a treat. I felt like we needed some protein so we decided to split the turkey sandwich and I truly wasn't expecting much but the flavors were amazing. So good that I kind of want another one for lunch today. It's definitely a casual food establishment and a great choice for lunch. The seating area is small but we were seated quickly and were fed and out of there quickly too. Great quick meal option!
Fun Upscale American dining both inside and outside.
Given we had our dog, we opted for outside. Service was friendly and the fries were abundant and very good. My Montreal Reuben sandwich was tasty but with brisket instead of corned beef. The menu is limited but offers interesting taste sensations- worth another visit.
Poutine had problems
I was looking forward to visiting Duckfat after seeing Andrew Zimmern review it on his Bizarre Foods program. While I was impressed with the friendly, bustling nature of the place, the poutine had some problems. I ordered it with the duck confit, which came as a small rectangular block served on top. It was warm, but not heated all the way through. The cheese curds were also not heated thoroughly. Even worse, the fries were extremely salty. Evidently, the potatoes had stayed too long in a salt bath and/or the bath used cheap table salt i.e. not sea salt. Finally, there were no chives served on top. For such a highly praised place, I was very disappointed. Yes, I should have sent the dish back. I regret not doing so. My take away is to speak up. Theirs should be do pay attention to quality.
Awesome place! Delicious poutine fries.
Grilled cheese was so so. The French dip was yummy. Strange seating--along the wall counter. Right but would recommend!

In Portland for a week and flagged Duckfat as one we wanted
In Portland for a week and flagged Duckfat as one we wanted to check out. On our first day we swung by for a late lunch. We were seated outside at a shared table, which was a little weird but I understand and appreciate the host wanted to seat us promptly and meet our request to sit outside. The server was quick to greet us and was super friendly. He also offered any advice on the menu, but gave us time to peruse the menu and select our options for lunch. After looking at the menu, we selected the large Duckfat poutine, tomato and fennel soup, and a roasted cauliflower and pickled mustard soup. We also got a bottle of wine. The soup was really great and I probably should have ordered the grilled cheese to go with it. The panini was overpowered by the pickled mustard and I couldn't find the cauliflower. It wasn't my favorite but the idea of it is appealing. The poutine was OK but after a while, it sort of became boring because it was a lot of sameness. I think next time I would just get a small order, and I think that would probably be enough.
TLDR: Always phenomenal, fries and upscale pub fair.
Make sure to get your fries with a flight of sauces. Whenever we come to Portland we always make sure to come here. Food is all excellent with a shout out to the most recent specials - the fiddlehead and the duck confit. Don't forget to get a shake too!

Good prices, good food, nice environment this place has everything but quite small so make sure to go at a not so busy time. We got the fries with truffle ketchup and Thai chili mayo and for something so simple it was delicious! We also ordered the Cauliflower sandwich and it was very yummy.
A delicious dinner at Duckfat was unbelievable.
We had Canaan who is maybe the best server I've ever had. He made this experience so enjoyable for me and my relatives visiting from out of town. We enjoyed all of his recommendations and the food was fantastic. We had the poutine and large fries which was plenty for our party of three to share. The crispy duck confit on our poutine was a highlight. We had the Reuben , Cuban Sammy and a delicious Caesar salad followed by milkshakes and some local brews. We were extremely pleased with the simple yet delicious selections that were highly recommended. We will definitely be back to this Portland staple. Bravo all around

A very millennial-vibe hole in the wall where they sacrifice comfort for style, but who cares the food is good. Ordered: Poutine, grilled cheese, pulled pork sammy, homemade grape soda, homemade chocolate milkshake The vibes are immaculate and the service staff was peak millennial. 1/1 The poutine was delicious without being offensively wet. 1/1 The bread in this place is top notch. Both sandwiches had their bread as the highlight. 1/1 The milkshake wasn't super sweet or rich, but I kind of liked the change of pace. Same with the grape soda. Not as sweet as expected, but refreshing because of it. 1/1 It's like they went out of their way to make the seating uncomfortable so you'll leave as soon as possible. Not a bad idea due to the small space, but it did hamper the enjoyment. 0/1
Perfect fries.
The best I've had, and that's probably also including Belgium itself. The sauces were delicious (Thai chili mayo and the garlic scape mayo in particular) but the fries are also good enough to stand alone. Believe me, I also love ketchup but there isn't a need with fries this good. Service is quick and it's a popular place. We came here two nights in a row for the fries. Maybe next trip to Maine we will branch out a bit on the menu...Or just stick to the fries!
Come for the fries, stay for everything else.
Absolutely amazing. It's not just the fries, everything we got here was on another level. We visited Portland and ended up going here twice in under a week because of how great everything was. Our server the first time was a man who worked there with his wife, he was AWESOME! The second time they were much more busy but the service was still great. The duck ceaser is on another level, soup, sandwhiches, desserts. This place has it all.

Stopped here for a late lunch around 3 and was able to get seated quickly. Food was tasty and a bit food coma inducing, as to be expected at a place called Duckfat. The double fried duckfat fries were the star, and we liked the horseradish mayo and truffle ketchup the most of the 5 dipping sauces. The cream of tomato fennel soup was comforting, and the reuben was smokey with good bread and a balanced ratio of fillings for me. I don't normally drink soda, but the creamsicle was a delightful treat. Cute small space that had a warm bistro feel to it with a touch of class and fun with the magnet poetry on the wall. Service was fast, friendly, and attentive. Would definitely stop by again if I'm craving some fried carbs in Portland.
Amazing as ever!
Its been a while since I’ve been here partly because there is always a wait. Well, friends had never been so we waited 40 minutes in the cold and rain. Totally, worth it! 8pm-ish. So good!
Get the Duckfat Caesar.
I read an article in the Portland Press Herald about how wonderful the Caesar salad is here and it was no exaggeration. It was one of the best I've ever had, especially with the slices of house-smoked duck breast that it came with. The Belgian frites were delicious as usual. The glass of Les Traditions Pinot Blanc was also great.
Worth a side trip service exemplary
Great Caesar salad with house cured duck breast chicken salad also great Fry’s while good were made from scraps or very small potatoes none over 2”
Blueberry Milkshake is a Must!
This review is based on a take-out order of fries (with the sauce flight), brussel sprouts, sodas, and milkshakes. The place was packed when we showed up on a Saturday night, but staff was super friendly and offered a 20 minute wait time or a take out menu. Since the place is tiny, we opted to take our food back to our hotel. The fries were good! Crisp, and I feel like I could taste the difference between these fries and non-duck-fat fries. My partner and I liked about half of the sauces, the other half were hit or miss. The brussel sprouts were also good but nothing amazing. I loved the blueberry milkshake! Flavorful but not too sweet. The original shake was also very good. We had the creamsicle soda (decent, but needed a lot of mixing) and the Maine tonic, which was not to our taste (it was very earthy). Overall, I appreciate that the menu has a variety of options but not an overwhelming amount. The place feels unique to Portland, and although on the pricey side, I can see why it’s so popular.
NOT Proper Belgian Frites
It was Sunday at the lunch hour, so we decided to avoid the anticipated long wait to get a table and , instead, got takeout. We ate the food in our car not half a block away. The fries were cold to the touch (it was just a 10 second walk to the car, so that could ‘t have been the reason). Real Belgian fries are double fried to get that real crispy crunch. These fries were so soft that not one gave the expected snap. Clearly had been sitting in the kitchen for a long time. Any good frites place distinguishes with its sauces. The garlic mayo was so light on the garlic we only knew it was such because it wasn’t our other choice - the truffle ketchup. That also disappointed. Ketchup should have some presence of acidity. This ketchup was just sweet. Portland has so many great food places , don’t waste your time here. Expensive for the quality delivered.
Good food
My first time at Duckfat and it was delicious! A small and simple menu with great flavor. Got some French fries to share with the flight of dipping sauces, a homemade cherry soda, the Reuben sandwich and the best blueberry buttermilk milkshake of my life. I will be recommending to all our hotel guests. And the service was great. A must try for Portland dining.
Out of this world food tarnished by preventable mistakes
Amazing - out-of-this-world sandwiches and fries with a good atmosphere in a cozy setting. But. Wait times were incredibly long. Which is compounded because, they don’t take reservations, and their queue system is glitchy. And furthermore, the service is uneven (eg the waiter purposely looking away when trying to get their attention). And to top, all items are surcharged a non optional 24% (kitchen + tip). This knocks 3 out of the 5 stars I was thinking the food deserves, as it detracts from the experience in a gratuitous way. It may be fine, the restaurant was full, and as I wrote they have more demand than space. Would I come back? Maybe. But why not make the whole experience more enjoyable for customers?
A taste late lunch
We planned to eat at Duckfat during our brief visit to Portland. But with rain and wind in the immediate forecast, we decided to stop for late-lunch/early-dinner on the way to check-in to avoid walking in the rain. It proved the right choice. It was busy on that Sunday afternoon, but we got two seats along the wall and split the poutine with a square of crispy-skinned duck on top of the fries, duck gravy and cheese curds, along with a bowl of the tomato and fennel soup. Despite the chill outside, my husband also ordered the sea salt caramel shake with Duckfat's caramel, made with duck fat. Everything was delicious, the portions were plentiful and we saw a lot of items on the menu we would go back and try. One thing, the parking was steeper than we expected, so the minimum 2 hours cost almost as much as the meal. In nice weather, we would check in, then walk over from our Old Port hotel.
Do yourself a favor and go here!!!!!
After reading the other reviews I was very excited to go to Duckfat and actually planned a stop here on our drive to Bar Harbor from Boston. They do not take reservations and after a day of flying and diving to get here we waiting an hour and a half for our table but it was soooo worth it. I LOVE fries and really enjoyed the ones I had in Amsterdam previously. These were just as good. We got the large fries and the flight of sauces. They were all good but out favorite was the truffle ketchup and horseradish mayo. We had the tomato soup which was excellent. I had the roasted pea pod salad special which was good but a lot spicier than I expected. My husband had the roasted Turkey which was also very good. The star of the meal though was the original duckfat shake. My husband is an ice cream/gelato person and has to have it alot. This milkshake was handsdown the best one we have ever had. We have been home a week and my husband is still talking about how great it was. If I am ever in the area I am going to make a point of ensuring that I stop here again.
