Had dinner at Crown Shy on an early Sunday evening and they were already busy.We had the Gruyère Fritters, Hamachi Crudo, Octopus and Pork Katsu - they were all good but nothing really stood out except perhaps the Hamachi Crudo which had a nice mix of flavors.Desserts though were excellent - we loved both the Satsuma Orange Ice Cream and the Sticky Toffee Pudding.Interesting atmosphere with relatively loud music and the service was excellent especially our server Madison.
Be the first to ReplyMust order again: Short ribs and Octopus.
Another restaurant that has good atmosphere, friendly staff and yummy food.

Waited around 15-20 minutes to order a drink here while waiting for Overstory. Hostess confirmed we would receive bar service in the standing area. For a restaurant that received a Michelin star, their initial service doesn't reflect that. It would have been nice if anyone had come to greet us, ask us if we had been served, or anything-- so we left. I work in the hospitality industry in another major city. While nothing monumental went wrong, I definitely got a bad taste for the lack of service. Do better.

the chicken is a MUST! So tender and flavorful! Ask how they make it! You'll be amazed!! Service was phenomenal and everyone was hospitable!! We sat at the bar which was amazing to get to talk to the friendly bartender. I recommend trying a little bit of everything to be honest.
Be the first to ReplyThe food here was just absolutely amazing.
Everything just paired perfectly together! Not only was the food great but the service was also top notch. You pay for a quality meal and you leave the place relatively full as well! I found this place by looking for the top restaurants in NYC and found Crown Shy to be number 2 and Kochi as number 1. I've tried both places and find it shocking that Kochi beat Crown Shy.... You definitely won't regret going here!!

Be the first to ReplyThis contemporary American restaurant is a Michelin Star
This contemporary American restaurant is a Michelin Star spot, with lots of hype. The design of the restaurant is very modern and sleek with dark lighting. The menu is only online, and a bit hard to read. For the dishes, we tried: 1. Cauliflower This dish was tasty, paired with parmigiana and sherry. A good sharing plate to start. 2. Gruyère Fritters These fritters were not as good as we expected. They were cold and the cheese was heavy. 3. Octopus Paired with sweet potato and a laksa sauce. The dish was pretty, and the flavourings were different. 4. Pork Katsu A large single piece that was fried and paired with pear and bok Choy. This dish was crispy and tender. Great for sharing. 5. Citrus-Marinade ChickenThis dish was paired with a house hot sauce that wasn't really "hot". We found the chicken cooked well but lacking in flavour. To finish we had to try the sticky toffee pudding, and it was definitely the best thing we had. It was paired with an apple sorbet, and topped off with pecans. We loved the flavours together. Honestly, we found the food average as we only really enjoyed the dessert. The dishes were a bit pricey, but expected. This is a spot definitely just for experience.

Just visited for a date night & really enjoyed our meal! We got the Nightshade Paloma & Melona Milk Punch cocktails, which were both great. The complimentary bread was great & for a small plate we split the Gruyère Fritters, which I did enjoy but I think compared to everything else they didn't really stand out. In my opinion they could honestly use a little sauce or a little more gruyere, but not bad by any means. Our entrees were the Dorade & Citrus-Marinated chicken, which were both perfect! Great flavors and good portion size as well!Finished off with the sticky toffee pudding which was also great. We will definitely plan to go back.

Business dinner with members of my company so it was a party of 8. The cuisine stated American but the food was Indian which was no big deal as everyone loves Indian food. It was a chefs menu of 3 courses. First course was very good. The issue is it took over 45 minutes for the second course. No apologies from the waitress or the manager and they defended the delay. What should have been a couple of hours for dinner was over 3 hours. I will not go back. Food was good, not great, service was terrible. Not worth a second visit.
Be the first to ReplyAll in all I think it was a great time with great food
All in all I think it was a great time with great food except for an incident that really disappointed me. We went with another couple who enjoys trying new places and food just as much as us and been looking forward to trying this place for a while. The restaurant is huge and beautiful.Drinks: The drinks were really yummy the favorite for the table was the Stone fence with flight plan being a close second.Food: The food was spectacular. We really enjoyed all of it. The stand outs for us were the octopus, chicken (surprise hit), short rib, and Sticky Toffee pudding. We could not get enough of all of these. The other items we tried were complimentary bread of course, gruyere fritters, mushroom pasta, pork katsu, and coffee baba rum. These were also very good but not the stars of the night for us.Service: This is where its a bit of a mixed review. The service was slow but I think its because they are so busy. However, we did not mind because we were enjoying our drinks and catching up. The waiter was very nice. The issue came at the end of the night we asked the waiter if we needed reservations for Overstory and he said we would. He went to check and said there would be an hour wait for us so we asked if it would be ok for all of us to get a round of espresso martinis and he said of course. He puts the order in and we get our drinks. We barely had the chance to give them one sip when a woman in a black blazer (I'm guessing a manager or hostess) came to us with a condescending attitude and said Hi so it seems like you are only doing espresso martinis and we need the table so since its just espresso martinis it would be great if you could move to the bar. Lets look at the bar there is no where to stand or sit because its packed. Ummm no. I was like if you would bring us the check (because we still had not gotten our check) we will gladly leave. She's like ok great I'll bring it right over and she does and we took a few more sips and left. I do not know what kind of Michelin star restaurant this is because I believe service is just as much as an important factor as the food. First, we had dinner reservations at 6:15 for which we arrived timely and were seated by 6:20. It took more than 20 minutes for someone to get us our drink order. We get our drinks and after waiting a bit more the waiter comes and we are ready to put in our aps and at this time we are told the whole order needs to be put in at the same time. Ok no problem maybe we should have known better but would have been nice for the waiter to tell us when he took our drink order. OK he leaves and comes back we finally place our order. Since the concept is sharing our orders come out little by little. My issue is after delivering extremely slow service we are told in a rude manner we have to leave (it was a little after 9:30). I don't even care if we had to leave my problem is why would you let us order a round of drinks take a sip and then tell us we have to leave the table. What should have been done is "I know you just placed a round of drinks but we need the table say in few minutes so if you don't mind drinking them quickly or moving to the bar I'll keep the order otherwise I'll cancel and bring you the check. I apologize for the inconvenience busy night." Simple, and then someone doesn't have to come to tell us that since its just espresso martinis like we didn't just drop 800 plus dollars on dinner that we are no longer entitled to a table. I tried not to let this annoy me and even waited a few days but having some tact when speaking to customers really goes a long way. I'm not sure if we would ever go back, unfortunately, since the food was really good.

Be the first to ReplyTonight was my first time at Crown Shy after wanting to try
Tonight was my first time at Crown Shy after wanting to try it since before the pandemic. Everyone in the staff was super nice to us and we were able to get a seat at the bar without a reservation with not that long of a wait (Wednesday night - wait time about 30min). The food was not bad, but also not mind blowing amazing as I was expecting it to be. It seemed overpriced since the portions are small and the taste not that all exceptional. I feel like there are other restaurants out there with food as good or better for a better price. But we do have to keep in mind that we are also paying for the location and ambience, which was elegant but also casual. It was not bad at all, just not for me. I'm glad I've tried but will probably not be going back. Giving it 3 stars because, for me, it was a disappointment.
Be the first to ReplyThis review is for take out only.
First off, I was so excited to try this place out as I've been following them since their opening. We got a vast assortment of all their menu items to pick up for take out. I have to say, the hostess who we placed the order with on the phone was absolutely lovely. Like literally one of the best hostess' I have ever spoken to. We grabbed our food and headed home, so excited and ready to dive in. As we tried one dish after the other....Nothing stood out, literally nothing left us craving more. And it's pricey so it felt like a complete waste. It makes me so sad to write that because every dish sounded delicious. Actually, we ordered a side of their famous olive bread, that was probably the only thing we can say was ok, but again nothing blew us out of the water. In particular, their fritters was an item I had been dreaming of since I saw it on their menu years ago, but they were Taste less. Literally like eating a sponge, if I ate sponges. You get it.We also got all their desserts - the sticky cake, I forget what it's called, but that was pretty good now that I think of it, so try that. Maaaaybe we will try again and dine in, perhaps that will change the experience, stay tuned...Ideally, I'd love to have a neighborhood spot that we can bring groups of friends to and was hoping this would be it, but it was not a success.

Crown Shy was amazing from the service to the food! I would highly recommend, I plan to add it to my NYC lineup of restaurants,
Be the first to ReplyI love this place.
It is so so good and every single dish was amazing. The interior of the restaurant is very casual, with some pop music playing to set the mood. The service was great and all the dishes recommended by the waiter were amazing. Even the bread to start was so soft and came with lime zest butter. Gruyere fritters: we started with this dish and it was covered with chili lime powder, a flavor that was subtle yet added a little bit of sourness and saltiness to the fritters themselves. The fritters were so good: fried perfectly with a little bit of gruyere inside each bite. Octopus & carrots: our next course contained the octopus and the carrots. The octopus was my favorite dish of the night: the octopus itself was so tender but it was paired with sweet potato chips and purée along with chorizo. Each element of the dish had a different flavor and it all paired together so nicely. The sauce of the octopus reminded me a little bit of bolognese sauce. The carrots were also a really unique and good dish. They came with sour cream and a sauce that reminded me of curry, and was a really good appetizer as well. Chicken: the chicken is apparently what the chef is known for. It came with a total of 5 pieces, and constituted half of a chicken. The charred or grilled ashy taste of the chicken and a little bit of spice in the chicken really brought out the flavor. Satsuma orange: the dessert was honeycomb with orange icecream and marshmallow on top. Once again, the different flavors all combined together worked super well and it was a great way to end the meal.
Be the first to ReplyFirst time here and honestly really impressed.
We came on a Tuesday evening for an 8:30 reservation- were sat promptly, service was good- nothing great but the food was phenomenal. We had the fritters, sunchokes and crudo to start and the chicken for main. The highlights were definitely the sunchokes and chicken! Also ended the meal with the sticky toffee pudding- can't recommend this dessert enough! Will definitely be recommending this place and coming back
Be the first to ReplyFood: 4/5Value: 3.
5/5Service: 4/5The fried cauliflower was very good, crunchy on the outside while you can still feel and taste the cauliflower on the inside, the octopus dish was also good, the octopus was not too chewy and had a nice smokey flavor. The entries were honest bit disappointing. The swordfish had a nice texture, but it was under seasoned and clearly lacked flavor. The pork cutlet was good and goes well with the berry sauce, but I expected more given the Michelin star and the price point. What sets Crown Shy apart is the desserts. The strawberry tart was nice and creamy, but it pales in comparison to the satsuma orange. The satsuma orange was the single best thing I tasted at crown shy. The moment it entered I mouth I could taste the toasted marshmallow, that flavor stays in your mouth long after you've swallowed the ice cream and the marshmallow. It was stunning. One of the best desserts I've ever had. I would've give crown shy 3/5 if not for the desserts.
Be the first to ReplyGood food and interesting/stand-out desserts.
Tasty complimentary bread. My favorite dish here was actually one of the appetizers which I'm not sure they serve anymore, but it was some kind of bucatini/spaghetti with sun gold(?) tomatos. The other appetizer I'd recommend is the gruyere fritters. We also tried the white bean hummus but I felt that one was just alright. The entrees were good but I feel like they're not good enough to justify the price. Two of us got the roasted short rib which was super tender, melt in your mouth, and beautifully plated but not sure it was mind blowing enough for $95. My other friend got the citrus marinated chicken ($41) which was pretty good, but she also felt it wasn't good enough to warrant the price. I'd say these kinds of restaurants are partly for the service and vibe. However, something I wouldn't skip on is the dessert. The satsuma orange ice cream was definitely something special and one of a kind. The first bite was the best, with an amazing contrast in textures and flavors between the marshmallow topping, ice cream, and honeycomb. Normally I'm not a fan of marshmallows, but the way they made it was really tasty and not too sweet. The sticky toffee pudding for two was also really good, especially with the sherbet(?) on the side.
Be the first to ReplyOctopus A La Plancha was elegant and clean flavors.
Also most enjoyed the Chicories, Roasted Quince, Almonds, Gouda and Octopus a la Plancha, Chorizo, Sweet Potato Mole. Crown chicken is their special. Was surprised by the signature chicken's foot included in the dish .Must get the orange ice cream and toasted marshmallow since this is just to die for! My husband loves chocolate and the chocolate tart was a deep as it comes. Love the elegant Japanese/modern American decor. This is a trendy spot with hip-hop music and cool attractive people so I pretended like I fit in here.

Be the first to ReplyI've been anticipating trying this restaurant since it
I've been anticipating trying this restaurant since it opened and finally made it for dinner on my birthday. It was a fantastic flawless experience from the moment I made the reservation.Service: A+++ amazing. We were greeted warmly by everyone, seated on time, and the table service was beyond perfect.Drinks: I highly recommend the orchard gimlet. I just wish there was more of it! We also enjoyed the supersonic and the acquisitionFood: they start you off with homemade olive bread and a delicious salted butter. The gruyere fritters are light yet decadent while the chili and lime give it an interesting twist. The octopus has to be the best octopus course I've tried. The BOMB sweet potato mole sauce is delightfully flavorful and complex, the chorizo adds richness, and there were these small crispy chips for texture. I will be back again and again for this dish. The hot chicken was cooked perfectly as well. The satsuma orange ice cream is like an elevated creamsicle that comes with a bitter salty honeycomb to balance it out. For two people, this was more than enough food.

I loved Crown Shy the first time I came, but the was when it first opened. Brought a couple with me this time around and was sadly disappointed. The service was great so this disappointment is purely based on the food. It was actually so bad that I didn't even take any photos. Olive Bread - not as good as it used to be. Hummus - this was actually goodFritters - dryHamachi - overly vinegarDuck ragu - too salty, borderline undercooked pasta. (not Al dented)Lobster pasta - just tasted like butterDorade - best dish all nightChicken - very dryI was embarrassed bringing my friends here. I will not be back.
Be the first to ReplyOverall it was a win.
Decor: it was a simply done modern design with slatted wood paneling and yellow/gold banquettes. Large dining room. BeautifulService: Our server, Paco, was wonderful. He directed us through the menu and was very attentive as were the other members of the team.Music: was hip hop but did not overwhelm the room. You could definitely hear your party speak at a normal volume.Food: the opening dishes were the fried cauliflower with sherry and cheese which both were very understated but ok nonetheless. The gruyere fritters were tasty. The appetizers were The octopus chorizo sweet potato was DELICIOUS. The roast carrots actually stole the show. Both are definite re orders. The Dorade (white fish) was delicious with Brussel sprouts and the sauce. The chicken did not stand out but was well prepared. The short ribs were delicious and well presented but not for the price. The celery root was surprisingly good as well as the foam with the braised ends.Dessert: I never understood how expensive restaurants always have uninviting desserts. Ice cream does not seem to be a reasonable dessert option for such a high end restaurant especially as 2 different choices. That left the chocolate tart, which lacked flavor, texture and sweetness and the toffee which was surprisingly good and meshed well with the green apple sorbet(more bc it was a sorbet than The apple flavor). It had a fudge/rich wet brownie feel to it vs the gooey crunchy and sometimes stick to your teeth standard .Overall it was good and I would return.
Be the first to ReplyWe came as a party of 8 for a birthday dinner.
They easily were able to accommodate us at an oblong table where everyone had room but we could all easily converse. The drink menu was amazing; the apple gimlet used apple juice that had been combined with citric acid to get to the ph of a lime, and it tasted perfectly balanced. All of the courses would stand out on their own in a restaurant, but the culmination of all of them created a truly perfect dinner. In the same weekend we visited Per Se and Gramercy Tavern, and Crown Shy blew them out of the water on every measure: food, drinks, ambience, service, bang-for-buck, etc. We don't live in Manhattan but if we did we'd make this our go-to special occasion place. And definitely get the short rib, toffee pudding, treccione, Gruyère fritters, and chocolate tart!
Be the first to ReplyThis place is a mess.
Execution is poor. It looks pretty but texturally it's a mess. Sauces thickened with corn starch. Pork chop over done at the edges and raw in the middle. This leads me to believe it was still frozen when they breaded and thawed it and that's before I tell you breaded and smothered with apple sauce that makes it literally soggy. A textural nightmarePositives are the loaf of complimentary bread and a nice wine list. If this were in most city's, it wouldn't last too long much less get a Michelin star. This is NYC hype. Waiter was just looking for us to smile and give it a bros thumbs up. Stayed here at the Mint at height of the pandemic and tries Crown Shy carry out at that time and met the love of my life there eating Crown Shy which wasn't remarkable then either. They could have plated anything competent and tasty and we would have loved it and yet..soggy raw pork chop...
