Great view with commensurate prices
We had an early reservation at Contessa. Itโs complicated to find the hostess stand but we were eventually seated. We had the Eggs Florentine. Everything is ala carte so we ordered potatoes and fruit. Prices are high but itโs a relaxing vibe. Service was really good.
Be the first to ReplyVibrant restaurant and amazing views at this beautiful restaurant.
Vibrant restaurant. Five star service at the bar. I had a great fruity mocktail. The cocktails looked great too. I also had branzino and garlic broccoli. I will return here with my friends! Fantastic views from the Charles River and Back Bay too. Come for the view and food and stay awhile.

Lovely rooftop location on Newbury Street. Beautiful room. Food was good and service was good. Wine list was stunning as were the prices. I could not afford 99% of the bottles. Fortunately, my dinner guests were not drinking so I just had a glass of Sancerre.
Be the first to ReplyRomantic Top Notch Upscale Italian!
After reading some of the year-end reviews which were down on this place, after being lauded earlier as one of the most difficult reservations to get in town, we almost cancelled our reservationโฆ.WRONG! We thoroughly enjoyed this romantic upscale Italian restaurant on the enclosed, nearly wrap-around rooftop of The Newbury Hotel across from the Public Garden on the corner of chic Newbury Streetโฆthe old Ritz Hotel totally refurbed. After nice drinks at the old Ritz Bar, now the Street Bar, which has retained itโs classic feel; it was up to the rooftop. Contessa is a beautiful romantic restaurant. The service was welcoming and excellent throughout. The food was delicious! Loved the Meatballs Aldo, a delicious carbonara fashioned with smaller ziti tubes, and an exceptional veal brasato on polentaโฆyou could cut it with a fork it was so tender. The wine list was very pricey, but if you stick to the Italian wines, white or red, from the more reasonable varities and regions, you could keep it at or under $100 a bottle, as we did with a nice bottle of Paulo Scavino Langhe, a wine we know well, and have been to the vineyard. Those who compare this experience to the North End restaurants are comparing apples and oranges. This is a fine romantic restaurant. We also love a lot of the traditional places on Hanover and Salem Streets, and have dined in them many, many times. But if youโre looking for a romantic night out in a beautiful place with exceptional Italian cuisine, then Contessa if for you. Highly recommend, and we look forward to returning.
Be the first to ReplyGood, not great.
This is a beautiful restaurant with nice views. The food is good and the service was fine, but neither is outstanding considering the price point. We thought the food was on a par with anything you could get at a good North End restaurant. There are a few reasonably priced wines by the glass, but the wine list skews heavily toward very expensive bottles. There is a coat check on the ground level when you walk in. It was staffed by a nice woman and we appreciate this amenity, but it is used for storage, too, and is cluttered with liquor boxes and such. It doesnโt make a great first impression. It may seem a petty thing to mention, but itโs an indication that management is not striving to operate at a fine-dining level, while charging fine-dining prices.
Be the first to ReplyCould be exceptional....
Hmm, this is a tough review as there are many things going for Contessa and my expectations were set fairly high. We dined here with friends to celebrate my wife's birthday. Getting a reservation is ridiculously hard. You will need to set a calendar reminder to look for a spot 30 days before you want to dine and try to secure one at the moment the reservations open that day. Then you will likely only be offered a 5:30 or 5:45 slot, or something very late. I presume most tables are reserved for their hotel guests. Despite comments to the contrary, we were greeted by very friendly staff who assured us we would have one of their best tables, and they did not disappoint. They wished us a good time celebrating my wifes birthday. The views from the dining room are fantastic, and while it was a brutally cold Boston night, we were very comfortable with heat radiating from above and aside the windows. Our server was also very nice, but there were a number of small missteps which I would not expect when dining at this price point. Let me say there is a reason that there are no prices posted on their website! Cocktails start at $22 and you can even find an entree for over $200. The wine list is stratospheric. SO, yes at that point expectations are high and while our server was good, the delivery was not there. My wife had to ask three times for a beverage. Our side of vegetable never arrived, nor was anybody around to check on that. Coffee came well after all our desserts were delivered and consumed. At the end of the meal, we mentioned the missing vegetables and our waitress said "she would remove that charge for us". I sure hope so, for something that never arrived! How about the food? Good, some very good, but nothing exceptional. The meatball appetizers were a delight, but the tempura fried calamari was hard , overcooked and rubbery. A real let down. Whipped Ricotta spread was very good. My entree of gnudi were light and feathery, but I think some might find the dish overly sweet. One of our dinner guests ordered the veal which he said was just OK. So, again a difficult review. We experienced very friendly and welcoming staff, but with some missteps, the room is beautiful but the food is not exceptional. The price point sets expectations that are simply not met. With some more attention to detail, I think Contessa could be a fine restaurant.
Be the first to Replyworthwhile rooftop restaurant with 5-star service and food.
service was excellent. the view is incredible and the food is divine. its pricey though it's worth it. my family and I have been for dinner and brunch and loved it. we especially liked the brunch because it wasn't too busy and you Get an incredible view of Boston with the sunlight. highly recommend. we will be back.
Be the first to ReplyGreat night out.
Don't understand the recent tough reviews. Came here for a birthday dinner with our adult kids. food was great, service was great. Room was warm on a chilly night. Loved it.
Be the first to ReplyExtreme RUDENESS.
Went there today for lunch and found the staff - particularly the manager - to be extremely rude. They were not accommodating to our needs and we will NEVER step foot in the place again. Do yourself a favor and onโt ever waste your time or money going there.
Be the first to ReplyA disappointing dining experience.
If you are looking for a fine dining experience, this is not the place. The noise level is high given the fairly active bar scene, the food is of average quality, and the server we had was a bit surly when we said we needed a few more minutes to enjoy our cocktails before ordering. My wife and I split a salad, each had an entree, and a cocktail. I also had a glass of wine. The cost, tip included, was $230.000. Valet parking, with tip, was $55.00. All in all an expensive meal for an average experience.
Be the first to Replyworst service
extremely disappointed. service was bad, food was bad. not recommend at all and won't go there anymore
Be the first to ReplyTotal disappointment for the 3rd time!
I have been invited to this restaurants 3 times and every time I think the service is going to change but unfortunately, it continues to be one of the worst service I have ever witnessed. Waiters donโt know what they are doing. Food is not great. I donโt recommend it. The view is nice.
Be the first to ReplyPrepare to be Underwhelmed
It was a special New Year's Eve menu and they had a set menu and timed seatings. The best part was our lucky reservation that allowed us to see fireworks from the Public Garden across the way through the huge windows. The rooftop venue is very old from the Ritz built long ago. The food was served in pairs or dishes for sharing, Some were nice and some were forgettable. The only thing that was good was the service. Frankly it's a bit stuffy. This felt more like a place to people watch and to be seen rather than a dining experience.
Be the first to Replyexcellent food and service
This restaurant is a must. Great views and atmosphere, great service wit very attentive yet respectful staff, nd delicious food. Try the Ricotta Gnudi Di Pecora - you wont regret it.

A beautiful room with a beautiful view. Staff friendly. Food was as expected nothing exceptional. Favorite bite was the chocolate hazelnut cake.
Be the first to ReplyGreat view, decent brunch from menu
We were here for brunch on Saturday. The view of the city from here is very nice. And the restaurant has a very elegant atmosphere. The Florentine Benedict was good and the french toast was very tasty, but not sure what you get is worth what you pay--it's pretty pricey up here. Still if you like breakfast food and are looking for a fancy lunch in the city, it's probably a top choice.
Be the first to ReplyEarly sunny day WARNING!
We had early Sunday brunch at Contessa. We arrived just after 8:00am. Thankfully, we had our sunglasses with us, which helped, but be warned. The entire south-east side of the dining room is glass with no shades whatsoever. The first table we sat at, my wife was facing the windows and had the sun directly in her eyes. I wasn't spared, either because the wall behind my wife was mirrored, so I also was subject to sun-blindness. We asked for a move and were told that while there were other tables, there would be no escape from the sun. We went with a different table where only one of us would be affected. I took the hit. So we had brunch and during most of the meal, I could only see my wife's silhouette and couldn't really see my meal very well, either. However, it being Boston, some helpful clouds did come by eventually so the last 15 min or so were comfortable. This is a restaurant review, so I will say the food and service were both excellent and the views are great so I'd definitely recommend it for any time after about 11:00 am. If we go back, we'll aim for evening. I'd bet the night views are terrific. Overall, I'm ranking average because even excellent food and service can't completely make up for significant discomfort. Maybe invest in a few shades?
Be the first to ReplyGood food, almost unfathomably bad service
I went to Contessa in back to back weekends. The first time it couldnโt have been more pleasant - food was good, service was attentive but not pushy. Everything youโd expect from this level of place. The second time I, as well as the other patrons in the area, were treated to service I would describe as out of an SNL skit. We sat for about fifteen minutes before being asked if weโd like coffee. We ordered, and after much more waiting, three of our four dishes came out. None of the ones that came out were correct. One dish was unaltered but missing a key ingredient. The two others were wrong as well. And the fourth dish that never came was clearly put in incorrectly. All around us, fellow diners experienced similarly bizarre service from one particular server. One table, a group of four not celebrating anything, received a dessert with โHappy Anniversaryโ on it. I still wonder about the poor couple that got some normal tiramisu instead. I get it - staffing is tough - but it would have been a much better experience had the manager just sent this person home and a competent person told us it would be a little longer than expected. Instead we got our bill incorrectly itemized three times. I hope those people got something for their anniversary.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent Lunch Choice
This is a terrific restaurant. The views are beautiful, the food is first rate, and service was nice. We had an office event in a private room and the setting was quite nice.
Be the first to Reply2 Thumbs Up!!
Excellent service and absolutely delicious food. We enjoyed the Squash Carpaccio, Kale Salad, and Lobster Capellini. Great experience from start to finish.
Be the first to ReplyRelaxed elegance
We stayed at the hotel and dined here for lunch and breakfast. The service is a little slow especially coffee and the check. The squash carpaccio is worth a try. The ambiance is relaxed. Donโt miss the cornetto with lemon custard.
Be the first to ReplyBeautiful Restaurant but was disappointed
The restaurant is very pretty and the service is excellent but food is lacking. Not true Italian, The squash carpaccio was interesting and good. However, the tortellini en brodo was very lacking. The chicken stock was good but the tortellini was not authentic. The Bronzino was over cooked. The vanilla gelato made from Olive Oil was excellent.
Be the first to ReplyWhat a fantastic experience!
The view was superb on the roof top; the service was impeccable and the food quality was delicate and excellent. We shared the amazing squash carpaccio appetizer and then each savored our lovely entrees -- branzino, lobster capellini and the macaroni cinghiale ( wild boar sauce ). What a fantastic experience!
Be the first to ReplyLovely setting, good food
The setting is beautiful (great views and nice decor). The service was also very good. And the food came out quickly. The food was nice but a bit too rich for my taste hence the 4 out of 5 stars.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing view and great food
We had a late lunch at Contessa because it was the only reservation we could snag at this extremely popular restaurant. The view is amazing and the decor is wonderful. My only complaint is you could feel the floor shake as wait staff walked by. Not sure if that sensation was noticeable for all tables or just the location of ours. The drinks were very good, albeit pricey. We got the avocado bruschetta and a salad to share and both were outstanding. We each ordered pizza and they were quite tasty. Was just a delightful place for lunch and I am sure if you can finagle a dinner reservation, the view would be even more special at night.
