Had dinner with 2 friends.
From the moment we walked in, it felt like a family table. The entire staff was friendly and inviting. The vibe inside is perfect (decor, seating, music). We got a smattering of apps; BBQ shrimp, shrimp toast, scotch egg, and hood sushi. All perfect. Amazing amount of flavor that was balanced and perfectly cooked. For entrees, we shared the short rib, trout, and pork chop. Again, all perfectly prepared and seasoned. Not a bad bite. Cocktails were original, balanced, and fun. Desserts of key lime pie and bread pudding were enjoyed by all. This is a must go any time I visit Seattle from now on!

Excellent food and each dish has its own unique and distinctive flavors. Complete value for money .
Be the first to ReplyWow, service here is excellent! Thank you, Niles.
The food here was good, not spectacular, but good and definitely worth trying. We'll probably be back. On Yelp, the fried chicken seemed to be popular so we tried that. It was good, but not the best I ever had. Gumbo was average, maybe needed a little more spice. Then we had the po mi, which is a take on the po boy and banh mi sandwiches. That was ok as well. Finished off with the bread pudding for dessert and it was fabulous. Texture and taste was spot on.

Great spot! Me and my friend ordered tons of things on the menu and everything was amazing. I will definitely be going back!
Be the first to ReplyI love the restaurant space.
It has a good vibe with great music playing. The night my wife and I went, service was nice, but not very attentive. It took us about 10 minutes to be seated with a reservation with open seats to sit at and once seated another 10 minutes or so to get water delivered. Maybe it was an off night for them, but the staff was very friendly. The menu is very unique and has some cool fusion food options. My gumbo was very bland and wasn't my favorite dish. The fried cabbage was possibly the best I've ever had! I would come back for that alone. The Mac was good, but I've had better. My wife's chicken was very good and filled with flavor. The bread pudding was also a hit! We were visiting Seattle for a conference and love to patronize Black businesses. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for good food, but a better vibe.

If you're reading this you probably already know that this is one of the best restaurants in our area. Located in the historic Liberty building; the ambience and photography creates a great sense of place, blending the past history and present presence of elements of Seattle's Black community. Food is amazing - particularly the fritters with Trinidadian curry - I could have licked the plate. I also had the catfish po mi - a great blend of flavors and the catfish was perfectly crisp. The desserts were also stand out - the brownie is everything anyone ever wants a brownie to be. And don't forget to order a drink - the bartenders know how to mix a good cocktail, especially the Cherie Amour. The place was of course very busy on a Saturday night, and the servers worked quickly and graciously. Go!

We ordered the fired chicken, hood sushi, gumbo, neck bones stew, and black eye peas hummus and everything was amazing. Food came out quick as well. It was a packed house so I am glad we came to dinner early. Loved the laid back atmosphere. We will definitely be back!
Be the first to ReplyI love and hate that they have a rotating menu.
You fall in love with an item and then next time you go it's gone. None the less it is always replaced with another great item to fall in love with. My favorites have the Hood Sushi, Jambalaya, Catfish and Grits, Unc's Wings, Seafood Gumbo. Hoping they bring back the Pho Gumbo so I can try it.

The food was incredibly impressive! We liked the scotch eggs (4/5 stars) and the vegan fritter (4.5/5 stars) was great. But the best dishes were definitely the chicken (5/5 stars blow your mind good) and the Mac and cheese (5/5 stars), I would recommend either highly to any foodie coming to Seattle!! The pork chop (4/5 stars) was a mixed bag, we loved the cabbage and bacon (5/5) but the pork chop itself (3/5) was lacking in depth of flavor. I really enjoyed the Green Apple cocktail and the Kinfolk cocktails, I want to get them again next time! The hostess and waitstaff were friendly (5/5 stars) although the wait for the food was unfortunately over 25 minutes. The ambiance is modern and home-y (5/5 stars). Soul food is not my personal favorite because I don't like most seafood or fried food, but wow I was extremely impressed and I'm so glad we came! For context, most sides were $10-15, the mains were $25-45, and the cocktails were $16/each.
Be the first to ReplyThis place really had it all.
Great staff, amazing food, solid ambiance. Went for dinner and it won't disappoint. It is a tad pricey but the food and the seasonings are well worth it.

Wow wow wow simply wow! I was finally lucky to get a reservation on the day off (weekday) for my friends and I at this coveted Seattle restaurant. We were seated in their patio area which is covered and llenty of heaters to keep you warm and comfortable. We ordered the following items:1. Appetizers: Shrimp toast (amazing), deviled eggs (delicious) & hood sushi bowl (mindblowing).2. Mains: Jambalaya (omg amazing), pork chops (delicious) & berbere chicken (simply awesome)3. Sides: Mac n Cheese (the best ive ever had), seasonal greens (the broth just elevated this dish to the next level) & cornbread (amazing tasted like cake)4. Drinks: Kinfolk, Hey Auntie, Purpleish Drank & Nearest Green Apple (each of these drinks were amazing)We were so stuffed that we unfortunately could not try any of their desserts (super sad). Hospitality was amazing. This place was fully packed on a Thursday evening so you know they cook some good tasty stuff here. Love that their menu is short and simple. Service was outstanding. Staff was very friendly and kind. Food was served hot piping hot freshly made flavorful and amazing tasty. I was trying to get a reservation here for months but always found it to be sold out. Finally keep trying mainly on the day off cos they do have some cancellations and some others can get in. This place is not very huge so I highly recommend reservations vs walk ins. All in all - I am a FAN and I will certainly be back here for more often!

Not only is their food prepared with perfect technical expertise, it is made with LOVE. Every bite of food was an emotional rush of deliciousness. There's no other way to describe it! The service was lovely and personable, and our server made the best recommendations and took great care of us. Even the gentleman that bussed our table was lovely and personable. We sat out on the patio and enjoyed the bustling neighborhood in the aftwr work hours. Communion is setting the bar very high and I will be back as much as they let me! For our dinner we started with the barbequed prawns, then we had sweet potato cornbread with a spicy honey butter; our mains consisted of berbere chicken, jambalaya, collared greens simmered with pork neck, and "Better than your Grandma's" Mac and cheese that was absolutely better than MY grandma's. For dessert we had a peach cobbler (which looked more like a peach pie but I'm not complaining) topped with a bourbon salted caramel ice cream. It made me emotional it was so good. I can't wait to come back and enjoy the next menu rotation!

The restaurant was bright and buzzing with energy - LOVE THAT! Greeters and wait staff were friendly, attentive, and efficient. Sitting inside was warm and comfortable, with nice cushy seats. Can't wait to reorder: - TBGT Relish Tray- Sauteed Clams - Buttery Cornbread - Special prawn toast (not on menu) - Hey Auntie cocktail- Purple(ish) Drank cocktail Might reorder:- Jambalaya - Seasonal Greens & Neck-Bones- Bread pudding- Kinfolk cocktail Skip next time:- Hood Sushi Bowl (batter was saltier than I like) I really enjoyed my dinner here and wish I could have tried more dishes. And they have delicious cocktails and Metier beer. I need to go back!

yummy restaurant and they were super helpful even though we didn't have a reservation! the wings are delicious.
Be the first to ReplyLove the hospitality, and great interior design.
Food was great, black owned but diverse setting. Lemonade was pure, the lemondade was purple lol...shit was good! This is a dope spot though.

This place is popular, and for good reason! We lucked out with a Saturday night reservation that our friends had somehow scored. We ordered a ton of plates and shared them. Definitely the way to go. Shrimp toast was bomb. Also loved the broth of the clams. The guys loved the wings. Green beans were fantastic. Mac n cheese and cornbread were pretty good. Jambalaya was also solid. Pretty spicy though! Bread budding and peach cobbler were a perfect way to round it out. Great vibe and loved the music. Hope to be able to come back in the future.
Be the first to ReplyI ate here when it first opened and it was very good.
Second visit not so good. Taken the staples off the menu, no fish entree, no red meat entree, no fried chicken entree. Some strange efforts to incorporate Asian flavors/Moroccan flavors that fell flat. Impersonal and slow service. We tried around 6 things, mixed results. Very good pork chop, slightly over-cooked and dry "moroccan" chicken, good wings, boring not flavorful beef skewers, pork belly special was ok. Deserts mixed, canned peaches in a peach cobbler not great, their famous banana pudding is good but uses fake whipped cream which takes away from the taste. Music way too loud, hard to have a conversation. This restaurant should be compared to Seattle's best due to the cost (I spent $350 for 4 people) and the hype, and it just doesn't measure up. For a meal that is $80-$100 per person it really is disappointing.
Be the first to ReplyI would do 3.
5 stars.- chicken on two dishes over-cooked.- all dishes mediocre- bourbon cocktail very one-note- 'best mac-and-cheese' was just ok. Finishing of dishes not good, top was not browned on mac and cheese.- menu very scarce, only 4-5 mains. -unclear of focus of menu: African- American, south east asian and moroccan? I think it needs some focus.- i am a dessert snob, but peach cobbler in the winter with frozen or canned peaches for an upscale restaurant is underwhelming.- the banana pudding was fine, but had a cool whip like addition.- they mentioned that they were understaffed after no one cleared dinner plates or refilled waters. I expect more from somewhere where dinner was $300+.- music is great and loudish! We had to raise our voices to talk to one another. Would not be good for someone with hearing issues.

Yikes with the reservation process, but we hit refresh a number of times and were able to secure an outside table. At first we were disappointed with that, but honestly we decided it's the best place to sit. If it's cold, just note that the heaters work great but the chairs have decorative holes on the seats that let cold air in so sit on a coat or something. Okay, let's talk service. Pretty darn good! We noticed there were two greeters and they were immediately friendly and accommodating. Our server had a sense of humor and the food runner was great. It took about 2.5+ hours for drinks, starters, mains, and desserts. Nice even pace. Now for the food! Let's get the "meh" dishes out of the way. Unfortunately, the pho was disappointing with lukewarm broth and not much flavor. The deviled eggs were okay but if I order again, I think I would just ask for plain. The jambalaya had a smidge too much spice for us, but that's a personal preference. The shaken beef skewers with chow chow were tasty (we kind of fought over them), the root vegetable fritters had a bite that was tempered by the incredible pairing of two sauces. You have to have the mac and cheese as well as the greens. I like my greens more on the vinegar side and these did not disappoint. The pork chop is A+ and the desserts are out of this world! Oh, if you're ready for a few cocktails, get the little bottles that hold two drinks because they are affordable and delish.

This is by far the best restaurant in seattle! I didn't catch our servers name but he was the most delightful man! So kind so sweet! We had pretty much everything on the menu and let me tell you! It was so so so delicious. So if you haven't gone...do yourself a favor!
Be the first to ReplyNever had elevated soul food quite like this.
My friend and I went to Communion for his birthday and let's just say, every item we decided to try ended up causing us to look at each other in disbelief or simply just devouring it. Whether it was the flavor or freshness, we experienced some of the best tasting food in Seattle. The vibe and ambiance was stellar and the service was smooth.
