Really not sure why this place gets so much hype
Cool spot in the garden district, but I feel its relying on its historic aspects. Food was average, had four different dinners to taste, nothing stood out. The place is enormous but well put together, staff is everywhere which is nice. But with so many choices in this town this would certainly not be on my short or long list. Ate there 10 years ago and it was much better. Prices are very high, it seems like it’s there for folks on special occasions because of its history, i wont be going back.

A local institution, Commander's Palace is ground zero for old school N'awlins fine dining. The titular estate in which the restaurant resides is homey and gorgeous; the interior sprawls up several staircases and into many chandelier'd rooms. It has more than a hint of the haunted house vibe--the dress code is there to protect your embarrassment. Jeans would seem profoundly out of place. Service is swift, jovial, and accommodating. Everyone on the staff seems genuinely invested in your good time. Outside of the building the restaurant's name is spelled out in bulbs on a haint blue board. This kitschy signage is a fitting advertisement for the food, which is loud and friendly first, functional and gustatory second. Prudhomme and Lagasse are long gone, but Commander's Palace is dedicated to delivering their classics with panache. The menu is like a Greatest Hits compilation with a few new tracks thrown in for good measure--some of which, as with THE BEST OF STING, are much better than the average of the previously recorded material. (I happen to like "When We Dance" very much.) Turtle soup is a totally unnecessary dish, and it isn't exactly life-changingly delicious either, but it exists here as an exotic token of a bygone era. The prevalence of such tokens at CP is what qualifies it as a tourist experience more than a restaurant. This is not a knock, and this is not to suggest that the food isn't excellent. (My jerk-seasoned pork chop was an exquisite umami garden, particularly when washed down with my glass of top shelf Vacqueyras.) But the atmosphere and the majority of the dishes have a strange ersatz quality--I felt more like a child pretending to eat in a fancy restaurant than an adult actually dining in one. (Then again, maybe this was because the staff tied balloons to my table in observance of my birthday?) 'Tis, in the immortal words of Graham Chapman, a silly place. But there are times when we could all use a little more silliness.

We went to celebrate a joyous lifetime achievement of on of my sons. We searched for a venue. My wife, who is from NOLA, suggested this would be the place. To give a bit of background, last time we dined at Commanders, the service was so poor, they insisted on comping the meal at my next reservation. While I appreciate the gesture, that is not what I do. I never feel good about it. It is far more important to have a good experience and hopefully the dining establishment will use that voiced experience to rectify the issue. Unfortunately, I did not leave a review for that experience. During the previous experience, the service was beyond poor. While I appreciate changing flatware between courses, if insufficient staff is available for the execution, they should not attempt the gesture (which I would expect an establishment desiring a solid reputation). Short version, no flatware came out prior to the meal. The food was then cold. And then, I still had to remove myself from the table, find a waiter, and kindly ask them to bring it out for the cold food. It was then brought out with a stare and a bad attitude. It was not even worth requesting warm food as a huge damper was put on the meal. Additionally, the cocktails were brought out after the appetizers arrived. Not a lot of time to socialize with my family (except when the food was cooling down). For this next go around I was going to have positive energy and a good attitude. However, it was even worse (can you believe). Initially I thought it was just me but that was not the case when by the end of the meal, all 7 of us were brought down and feeling a bit glum. When the waiter came to me first for my drink order, I directed him to the 3 ladies at the table as that is how I have been brought up. I got rolling eyes and a sarcastic look. He then proceeded to tell me that he was here to take care of us all and still expected I ordered first. Commanders, please educate your staff on etiquette. My first drink order was not correct. More eye rolling. As our waiter was not to be seen for a while, we did order a drink from another waiter (which never came) and were not so nicely explained for the martini lunch special, we can only order from our waiter. More eye rolling. While not all bartenders are created equally, a martini is an elegant drink with a special presentation. Each martini that came out was the spirit, ingredients, and ice cubes in a martini glass. Kind of like what we had at my fraternity parties in college. If the staff is not available to create a proper martini lunch, then it should not be offered. More bread requested and another eye roll. One of the most ridiculous moments came when we requested a picture of our table to celebrate this life achievement. It seemed like a massive request. A single shot with an iPhone...and another eye roll. Please explain the concept of affability to your staff. The poor affability was contagious and unfortunately by mid meal we were all brought down while trying to celebrate. It was so significant, we chose not to make any further requests and end the meal as soon as reasonably possible. Later that evening we went to Desi Vegas for a late dinner. Our waiter was Kevin. Apparently he has been there for 10 years. His service was impeccable and he relayed a very positive vibe. There was never any eye rolling. It seemed he was there to assure we had a great experience every step of the way. Brennens, you may want to see if you can hire him to educate your staff on etiquette, affability, and customer service. Kind of a finishing school for your employees. The positives of the meal were the genuinely celebratory ambiance and the consistency of the food. Hopefully as a family we will have many more great events to celebrate. We just need to figure out where.
Be the first to ReplyOutstanding Birthday lunch
We visited CP today for lunch. Besides the appeal of the menu, the 25 cent martinis also caught our eye. Our party of four absolutely loved our food choices along with the outstanding desserts. But, what really stood out was the exceptional service. A well deserved shout out to Keke and Macy who were the real stars of the day. They provided friendly and welcoming service. Thanks CP for a very memorable birthday lunch. Thanks again to Keke and Macy for making our lunch even more special.

Commander's Palace is my favorite restaurant in New Orleans. However, my most recent visit proved that they are not immune to an off night. First we had a very long wait for the bottle of wine we ordered. After ordering our meal, our first course came fairly quickly and then we became invisible to the two waiters working our table. We had an extremely long wait for our main course and it only arrived after the waiter finally came by our table and was surprised we did not have our dinner yet. She quickly returned with our entrees and you could immediately tell they were very cold and had been sitting someplace unserved for quite a while. We told the waitress they would have to try again and to her credit she immediately told the floor manager of the issue. The manager was quickly at our table, apologized and said we would not be charged for the entrees. New freshly made entrees were at our table very quickly (probably pulled from other orders in the kitchen). The food was as good as it always is at Commander's but it just wasn't their finest hour. The manager did a great job in rectifying the issues with the Kitchen and waitstaff.

Truly a special restaurant where the service and food are spectacular. We had been here before the pandemic, and now with the pandemic a bit more behind us, we went again, and had an extremely enjoyable meal. I ordered the corn fritters with shrimp for an appetizer, and ordered a second one for my main entree. My husband had fish, and both of us had the bread pudding. The food was delicious as were the special martinis for $5.00 and the reasonably priced wine. We enjoyed the ambiance even though the restaurant was crowded on a weekday.

This lunch was the best overall meal we had when in New Orleans! The food was amazing and we loved the band walking around to each table to perform.
Be the first to ReplyTerrible…. Don’t waste your money.
Worst restaurant experience in New Orleans.. Our table was cheap plastic covered in white cloth. The leaf in front of where I was sitting was not even level and my food would slide towards me the entire meal. Our waiter David was pompous from the start and seemed put off by having to wait on a table with three children. The turtle soup tasted like it was out of a can. The bread which we were told would be out with the drinks didn’t make it to the table until we were almost finished eating and I reminded David we still had not received it. Then it was tossed on the table wrapped in a napkin. This was suppose to be a nice dining experience. If I wasn’t spending so much money I would have thought I was at Dick’s last resort. There are plenty of good places to eat in New Orleans. Don’t waste any money going to this one.
Be the first to ReplyDON’T GO! Very disappointed!!
DON’T GO!!! I had high expectations and got low results. The service was terrible. The food was average. I guess it’s turned into a tourist trap. The glory days are over!!!! What a shame. The whole family was disappointed.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing bite worth the price
The service was amazing and each bite of food that we had great. The drinks were strong and the team did a great job to make us feel welcome. The Bread Pudding soufflé with the whiskey cream was the show stopper that you must have.

Whenever my wife and I take a trip to New Orleans we always make the time to eat here. My wife has always loved the attention to detail, the over the top service, the delicious food...most all of which was missing from the last time we dined there. One of the fun parts about eating here was the number of people they have to attend to your needs during the meal. There was always someone ready and willing to help take care of you at any time and they all worked like a well oiled machine. While the number of staff hasn't appeared to diminish, the quality of attentiveness and service most certainly has. We were seated in a what I would call a high traffic area where our table had people walking by on two of the four sides. We were just across from the wall which had at least 3 service people by it ready to go at any time, and yet when my wife excused herself to the rest room and left her napkin on her chair no one did anything about it. In the past they would come over, pick it up, fold it and place it back on the table for her return while they pushed in her chair. I counted 5 servers with free hands pass by before a middle-aged man in an all blue suit came waking by and he himself make the proper move to fix the napkin. Now I know what you are saying, this seems a petty item to take issue with. Well yes, it is. And I fully stand by my criticism. Commander's Palace is meant to stand out as a glorious homage to all that was good in the history of New Orleans, and all it's finest ornamentation. When the service starts to go and become just like any other restaurant I feel like it starts to loose it's luster. There were a couple of other issues with how the servers interacted with each other during our meal but I think I've made my point. The other disappointing part was the entree of my wife's meal. Overall I would say the meal was very good from my point of view. We started with Turtle Soup and Shrimp & Tasso Henican. Both were delicious. When the sherry hits the soup broth it's an amazing smell and if you were staying away from the Shrimp & Tasso Henican because it has okra, do not be afraid. It's a delicious plate of food that you will truly enjoy. My main was the Marseilles to Morocco and I loved it but my wife got the Bronzed Redfish and left over half undone. Either the dish was sitting too long or they over cooked it to begin with but the "mirror pond of caramelized Breaux Bridge crawfish fond" had congealed to a dull reddish brown and the entire dish was over salted. We went on to a cheese course and tried all three of the offerings. We enjoyed them all but were disappointed at the serving of them. We received more rind then cheese on some of them. The desserts were good. the souffle was delicious but the cheesecake was meh. Will we go back the next time we come, sadly I think probably not. New Orleans has too many talented chefs running amazing restaurants to give up a meal on a place you're not sure of anymore.

When i mentioned that i dont eat bell peppers the server made a special trip to ask the chef what was pepper free. Very professional and well run. One of the owners came to the table and welcomed us. Formal and elegant
Be the first to ReplyVisit Commanders Palace for a piece of delicious history
Commanders Palace is as wonderful as you have read. Service, Food, Atmosphere- all top notch. I appreciated their efforts to modify for the younger patrons- scrambled eggs, bacon, biscuits- I recommend a quick historical read about the restaurant history ahead of time, for a different appreciation of your visit.

This place lives up to its reputation. There was not one thing lacking during the entire meal. Kendall and Aiden did a fantastic job. They were able to keep the meal moving, meet all our needs, and not make us feel rushed. The food was beyond excellent. Highly recommend.
Be the first to ReplyMy best meal of the year
I loved my meal, and the service from everyone I interacted with. Reservations recommended, and there’s a dress code. I put myself in my very experienced server, Robert’s hands in terms of choosing everything I ate, and was treated to 4 courses of culinary perfection: shrimp and Tasso henican, winter brassica salad, pecan crusted gulf fish, creole cream cheese cheesecake. Spectacular, and I would gladly have any of these again and again (and I’m speaking as a person who doesn’t eat much seafood)! Beautifully prepared, quality ingredients, recipes tweaked to the nth degree, served by people who were professionals— obviously working together as a team. Expensive, but worth it as a treat.
Be the first to ReplyWorld class service! Commander’s Palace
Let me just say that the service and team here are the very best! The food was delicious, the service was exceptional and Keith made the evening extra special with his deep knowledge of the menu! We will be back for sure!
Be the first to Reply25 cent martini lunch and bargain meals
Book early. If they are sold out, check back often. Originally we had 8:30pm reservation but we heard about the 25 cent martini lunch and checked daily till we got a reservation. Commander’s is $$$$. But lunch is a bargain. They have daily specials $25 for two course (we had turtle soup and cat fish) or $42 for three courses (we had turtle soup, smoked Quail & bread pudding soufflé). The food was outstanding and the service was impeccable. In a town know for drink specials this was the best deal we found, 25 cent martini (limit 3 per entree) choice of vodka or gin martini, cosmo, Midori, or blue curaçao. Highly recommended for quality, experience and value.
Be the first to ReplyDelicious meal-- thanks to Adam
This was my second time dining at the Commander's Palace. What made our experience unique was the sommelier Adam. He recommended dishes on the menu and was very friendly throughout our dining experience. He should be commended for his hard work.

Oct 2023- Had not been in 25 years and I was not disappointed! Lived up to the great memories I had! We did not have a reservation but walked in when they opened, in the off chance they could accommodate us, and after a bit of checking, they found a table. So nice! Loved their specialty drink Crescent City Cooler and have made it at home many times!

Been living in New Orleans for 53yrs only ate there only a handful of times bc the prices are high but you get what you pay for. It was well worth it. Excellent service as well as the atmosphere Food was delightful.
Be the first to ReplyBest part if the history
Obviously, this place is historic, and that was cool. The vibe was fun from the beginning — walking in and seeing the beauty. The waiters were attentive, but once the waitress realized we were splitting a bunch of apps and an entree, she focused away from us and we had to wait longer. The 25 cent cocktails at lunch were nice. The sangria drink was much better. I wish we would have asked what the asparagus appetizer really was. From the description, we could not tell it was going to be a soup, and we had already ordered the 3-soup starter. The gumbo was the best of the 3 to us. The shrimp dish was nice, but we were hungy again about an hour later. It was an experience that everyone said we needed to have, but we’re not craving to go back.

No Nola trip is complete without a dinner at the Commander's Palace. One of the most exquisite meals we've ever had. The service was impeccable, the food was amazing. Be sure and have the bread pudding, it's one of the best things I've ever eaten!
Be the first to ReplyIt was snobbery terrible
I know this restaurant has a very good reputation, I had to have been there on a bad day. Both of us ordered steaks, one medium rare the other medium well. This came with the nastiest tasting deep-fried mashed potato patty. We received 1 steak dripping blood, and mind was pure red. The potato tasted like a mix of potato and fish.NASTY. I know many people like their steaks moving, I don't. Mr chef, I could care less of your snobbish feeling on steaks being medium to well done. You work there, I pay to eat there, fix my food the way I ordered it or find a different job. If I could give a -100 I would, third time there, and 3 strikes, I won't be back; much better places to eat.
