Great food in Soho
One of my best experiences with food and service in HK. Was a bit apprehensive on reading some reviews. Had a set menu lunch and every dish stood out in taste and presentation . Loved the monkey head mushrooms. Great value for money. It's a small restaurant and we were lucky to find a seat as we were early. It's advisable to book ahead. Located diagonally opposite from the Tai Kwun it's a great spot for lunch or dinner in Soho.
Be the first to ReplyVery authentic Sichuan restaurant👍🏻👍🏻
"Mala Tang" located on Bailey Street in Soho, Central, opened in 2005 and has been recommended by the Michelin Guide for 11 consecutive years. It has also received one Michelin star for many years. As a Sichuan spicy food lover, I , I have admired the name for a long time, and I specially brought my gay and lesbian friends to make a pilgrimage tonight. The restaurant has a renovated facade, and the interior is also full of new Sichuan flavor. It has a great atmosphere, and it is very popular every night. The quality of the food is beyond doubt👍🏻👍🏻 This 𥚃 provides innovative yet traditional Sichuan cuisine that will leave spicy lovers with endless aftertaste. The restaurant’s dishes are based on the concepts of spicy, spicy and hot. Chef Chen was born in Chongqing and has been professionally cooking Sichuan cuisine in Hong Kong for more than 50 years. Based on his experience, he used childhood food as inspiration and combined with creativity to reshape the classic Sichuan flavor into a new style, guaranteed to be a surprise😋 ▪️Foie Gras w/ Beef Ginger beef foie gras three-layer crispy pot cake $ 216 The signature dish is caramelized beef with foie gras, garlic, ginger, three-color peppers, onions, crispy rice with sweet sauce. It is full of ingredients. The rice cake is super crispy, and then the beef is soft and tender, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Foie gras, the sauce is thick and the taste is rich. Although it is evil, it is really delicious. ▪️Eggplant Salad $108 The soft eggplant is paired with spicy peanut sauce, which is numb and fragrant. It is very delicious. The sweet and sour sauerkraut is placed on the bottom, making it a refreshing and delicious appetizer. ▪️Moo Shu Wrap Moo Shu Wrap (Sheep) $198 The name of this dish is so special. The pizza is made with hands similar to those used to eat Peking duck. It is filled with rich ingredients such as fried lamb, vermicelli, carrots, celery, fungus, and mushrooms. The pizza is very smoky and tough, and the fillings are delicious. It is also served with sweet noodle sauce. , taste more delicious ▪️La Zhi Chicken Red Robe Spicy Chicken $338 Must-eat recommendation👍🏻As soon as it was served, you could smell the delicious and numb flavor. It was stir-fried with a lot of dried chili peppers and peppers to give it a good wok flavor. The boneless chicken was crispy on the outside and the chicken was still juicy and smooth. It was really a surprise and full of flavor. Spicy and salty, it’s really delicious, and there are also very crispy cashews, so outstanding ▪️Crispy Fried Tofu $118 The tofu is fried to a crispy texture and stir-fried with garlic, chili peppers, onions, and chives. It’s a bit like Hong Kong-style typhoon shelter, but more wok-smelling and flavorful. Although it’s hot, you can’t help it. Food and sun ▪️Spring Roll Crispy fried mushroom spring roll with sour plum sauce $98 This spring roll is also very surprising. The spring roll skin is fried so crispy that it is not oily at all. There are a lot of vegetables in the filling, but it still maintains a crisp and moist texture. It is completely crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. It is homemade. Sour plum sauce, extremely delicious 🏛️ Chilli Fagara 📍 Shop G/F, 7 Old Bailey Street, Soho, Central
Be the first to ReplyFairly good Sichuan
Went early first lunch and picked the set menu. All that I tasted was good and nothing was extra ordinary. Overall the set menu had a lot of vegetarian options. Service was quick and friendly. If you are in the neighbourhood and feel like Sichuan food you could try this place.
Be the first to ReplyVery disappointing…
Having been going to Chilli Fagara’s over 15 years our latest visit was incredibly disappointing and I hope the owners sit up and take stock of a bad review. My husband and I were seated at our table and before being given menus or asked for our drink option, we were told that we only have the table for 1.5 hours (not the usual 2hrs most restaurants allow). We noticed there had been a huge price hike on everything (since being there in Dec) which, bearing in mind the short period of time to enjoy our evening, was not a good start. We ordered our food which in the main was very good however the seasonal veg option (which wasn’t on the menu) was very oily (pea sprouts with garlic). When the bill came we had been charged HKD228 for this dish! Ridiculous!! One of the staff members (the person who told us about the time for the table) hovered about not doing much but watching you eat every mouthful. You could tell they couldn’t wait to clear the table. It seems the thought here now is quick in, quick out, charge the earth even down to a extra charge for chilli sauce and in order to take your very expensive leftovers home, they charge for take home box too. I have never experienced that before. To be fair we challenged all this to the staff who did give us a small discount however it was all too little too late. Very disappointing…
Be the first to ReplyDon’t bother
Unfortunate. Visiting a friend in Hong Kong. Everywhere has been great - apart from here. Water was 68HKD and no tap water available, which with spicy food wasn’t ideal. The lychee bomb cocktail looked great BUT was a giant frozen lychee and about two sips of actual drink. The table was so small there was no room for our disappointing water and drinks. Services was slow - just go anywhere else. To top it off, the meal was expensive and not worth the money …. Well the tofu was good!
Be the first to ReplyExcellent food, they just need to slow down a bit
We discovered this restaurant back in 2007 (I think it was relatively new then) and come every time we are in Hong Kong. It’s been a quite a few years since the last visit. The food is still exceptional and absolutely worth it (though some dishes are extra pricey) and the staff are pleasant. However the reason I’ve given this 4 and not 5 stars this time is that it has lost a bit of the charm it had. The experience this time felt rushed, with all the dishes coming out in rapid succession, with a main arriving while the entrees were still there. The menu starts with the description of the Ma, La and Tang dishes to be had in sequence but then the order the dishes arrived seemed to ignore that. We were even told by a staff member when we were seated that we had the table for 90 minutes, though we did end up staying longer. They certainly didn’t try to kick us out, but it detracted from the premium feel they are aiming (and priced) for. On earlier visits it all felt a bit more serene and chilled. If this can be rectified it will make for a much more elegant dining experience which matches the food.
Be the first to ReplyA must for all Indian who love Chinese food
I have been coming to Hong Kong for last many years. Every time it’s a must. The staff is very friendly cordial and accommodating
Be the first to Reply
Caramelised Beef with Foie Gras, with Garlic, Ginger and served on Crispy rice squares($98/件) 脆卜卜嘅鍋粑, 放上厚切肥美,油香四溢嘅香煎鵝肝, 和一塊超好食嘅牛肉!
Be the first to ReplyGood food; poor service
The food here is consistently good - they understand spice! Unfortunately the service was rude and rushed - no sign of friendless or even courtesy. This used to be a favourite restaurant of ours, but after today’s experience we’ll be exploring other Sichuan restaurants in Hong Kong

Be the first to ReplyNot great
We were seated by the entrance and every time the doors opened (and they did very often because many people are still doing take aways during these COVID restrictions) there is a super loud noise from the hush of air emitted from the air conditioning. It didn’t bother me the first couple of times but when it happened nearly 30 times as there were a herd of people coming to take away stuff and the kitchen couldn’t keep up with the orders so people were repeatedly entering to rush them etc, it completely ruined our experience. We waited 40 minutes or more for our food and the menu wasn’t very clear so the fish we ordered that wasn’t detailed in the way it was cooked came out deep fried. The greens in ginger sauce were also winter melon and not really the sort of greens (kailan etc that you get served normally) we had in mind. The manager was nice as they had forgotten part of our order and apologised profusely. All in all, we were really hungry and the wait+ surprising turnout of the food+forgotten order+ annoying and hectic environment really left a bad taste in our mouths. Had better memories of this place from years past.

Yummy! Delicious Sichuan food (spicy) with the added bonus knowing that the ingredients were fresh. The highlight of the evening was the Dungeness Crab but the Plump Chicken morsels were fab too. Good pairing with Riesling. Given the restaurant size, had to reserve to get the desired dinner time. Service was excellent.

Chili Fagara is a popular place on Old Bailey Street in Central District for those seeking Sichuan cuisine. They have a fair sized seating area and offer take-away and delivery through deliveroo for those who prefer to eat within the comfort of their homes or area hotels. Opening hours are 11.30am to 3pm (lunch) and 5-11:30pm (dinner) daily.
Have enjoyed good meals here over the past few years but recently decided to order in. Ordered the Caramelised Sliced Beef (HK$170) which arrived in a quick 17 minutes after ordering. Portion size is on the small end, the beef slices were a nice combination of sweet, savoury with good texture. They were not hot on their own, however, if you cut up the chilis served with the beef and mix the seeds up with the caramel sauce, you can add a bit of heat to the dish. This is similar to what we have found with this particular dish when dining in at the restaurant.
Overall, a nice quick delivery order from Chilli Fagara, something I'd be happy to do again in the future as well as eating at the restaurant.
Hot and spicy paradise
Chilli Fagara is a small Sichuan-style restaurant near Lan Kwai Fong. It serves qualty (and spicy for sure) dishes in a nice decor. Food is very enjoyable. The taste is pretty authentic. Stir-fried mutton with cumin and chilli is our favorite. Water-cooked fish is also nice. Dan dan noodles is aromatic. Do go for the desserts, especially the glazed banana. Price is on the upscale side but reasonable. Service is fine.

We decided to spend our last night in Hong Kong at Chilli Fagara as we fell in love with Sichuan cuisine during our stay. Chilli Fagara has a big vegetarian-menu for those who don't like meat (veggies have a bit of a hard time in China). It also features the impossible meat - recommended!
The place is quite small, so I'd advise to reserve ahead what we did. The vibe is great, very dark, urban and cool. Not necessarily cosy, but a trendy place to hang out at. The wantans were amazing and the Sichuan Beans were super spicy, but a great flavor. I would not necessarily recommend this restaurant to people that don't care for spicy food but for us it was great. Everything was so flavorful!
Service was also good! It's not a cheap place but well worth the money. In case we'll back to Hong Kong, we come back!
Quick spicy lunch
Yummy as always! Have lots of ingredients in the soup, good for 2 people for lunch. My favourite spicy fish for lunch.

Just perfect meal. Soft shell crab, sizzling eggplant.....dan dan noodles. All superb. If you likeSichuan cooking you wil be enchanted by this wonderful food. And the caramelised bananas are worth the airfare to HK on their own.

Phenomenal food and great service.........highly recommended. If you like heat you will find it and if not they can do that as well. If I lived here I would be he three nights a week.
Be the first to ReplyDelicious Sichuan cuisine in Central
I love Sichuan cuisine and have been going to other Sichuan restaurants in Hong Kong for years. This was my first trip to Chilli Fagara and it’s a level above both in the decor and the creativity of the food. It did once have a Michelin star and you can see that in the quality of the cooking. It does shut fairly early (we were the last customers there at 10.30) and bewarned most dishes are VERY spicy!
