The food here is amazing! The guacamole was the best I've ever had. How can that be? I had never had memelas before and my first bite response was "oh my god". Then we had chicken thighs flautas, ono fish (which was on the menu that night) and dessert. This was the best meal we've had in a long time.

My boyfriend and I have gone here a handful of times for special occasions and it never disappoints. The service is always amazing and we love to support a family owned business. The changing menu makes it an exciting experience every time we go, and we can't wait to go back! Perfect for any occasion
Be the first to ReplyCozy place to grab authentic Mexican fare.
Very casual and byob. It's loud and be sure to plan ahead as there is usually a wait!

Tried this place while visiting for the weekend and the food was unbelievable plus the owner is amazing
Be the first to ReplyThe service was excellent.
The servers were engaging, caring, and considerate. Then the food just put it over the top. Not only was each dish exquisite, but the plating made the experience unforgettable. The environment of the restaurant was intimate and unique, and I couldn't say enough to recommend this restaurant to you!

Wonderful restaurant! The food is always delicious and the restaurant is run by the sweetest people. Great for gluten free, dairy free, and other restrictions, and super fun BYOB!

Best Mexican food in Chicago hands down! The brussel sprouts lead the way into a great dinner. All of the meats were tender and delicious. Finished by the best flan I think I've ever had! They were also very allergy friendly!
Be the first to ReplyChefs menu was excellent.
So much fun, great service, and ambiance! Highly recommend everything on the menu
Be the first to ReplySome dishes were good and some were not good.
Waiter recommended the special dessert (almond cake). Was very dry and not good at all! We still had some dessert left, but were asked to leave by the owner, because there were people waiting. Extremely rude and said, she didn't care if I wrote this Yelp review! Don't recommend the restaurant. We have plenty of great restaurants with amazing owners/employees in Chicago!
Be the first to ReplyAbsolutely terrific meal.
Great service, the vibe was stellar, and each dish was uniquely terrific and memorable. We'll be back.
Be the first to ReplyFood was outstanding! Really cute and cool interior too.
We really liked our server as well. I'd go back in a heartbeat.
Be the first to ReplyLove the hole in the wall feel with world class food.
My husband isn't usually into fancy food, but even he was raving about each dish. Everything was super flavorful and clearly well thought out and the service was spectacular.
Be the first to ReplyThe food and service was top notch.
The lamb chops were my favorite. The waiter recommended two tapas per person and we were one shy of that. We were stuffed. I would highly recommend this restaurant for any date night or entertaining of friends.

Forgot to take pictures both times I came because I was so excited to eat! The food was fresh, authentic, and delicious. The reservations was a bit annoying to make but it's BYOB and worth the little bit of hassle. Definition of hole in the wall but will keep coming back as the menu changes semi frequently.

I knew it was going be good as soon as we walked up to the door and got a whiff of the great smells! We had to wait a few minutes for a table, so we stood by the kitchen and got a good preview of all the different dishes. Everything was excellent! Highly recommend you visit. It is BYOB or you can bring your own tequila to use with their margarita mix. We brought tequila but but there was more mix than we cared to drink for two people.
Be the first to ReplyThis is a really cool spot.
I forgot to take pictures, but it's a small restaurant that is kind of underground. It's the garden level. I wouldn't have known it was a restaurant if my friend hadn't gone here before. It's more of a tapas type place where you get multiple dishes and split it up amongst the table. It's a smaller restaurant so it is a little crowded, but it's definitely something you should try out if you are in the lake view area! The artichoke empanadas were amazing. If they still have it when you go, you should definitely get it. They might not sound the best, but just trust me. It's BYOB and they have homemade sangria punches that you can mix with the wine you bring. It was very tasty!
Be the first to ReplyYes I do recommend! I went to this spot with a girlfriend
Yes I do recommend! I went to this spot with a girlfriend of mine and it was a pleasant experience. This place is BYOB bring your own bottle of wine or tequila. For those of you who love their tequila I would recommend that you bring the tequila bottle as the server will then bring a pitcher of hibiscus to mix with your tequila it is DELISH! Must try this experience. The place is Intimate and cozy the servers are friendly and very personable! I liked this spot cause you go in and place your entire order from appetizers to salads and main course and the chef brings to your table in a timed manner so that you don't have a table filled with everything you ordered all at once which helps a ton with flow and conversion. The meals are spread apart and paced while you enjoy your bottle of wine or tequila! This is Mexican cuisine with a Latin infusion of explosive flavors. I tried several items on the menu and was pleasantly surprised at how much I really enjoyed everything we tried that night. It's a great spot for a date or a one on one with a good Friend! Really recommend!!!

A constant evolving magical culinary journey that delivers a vegan and gluten free inspirational twist on Mexican classics. Chilam Bilam is one of Chicago's best kept secrets. Nestled on the busy street of Broadway, tucked away in a lower level, the atmosphere is vibrant and full of life with foodies from all walks of life enjoying authentic dishes made with the freshest ingredients. You can feel the love and passion the owners have for their food as they bring unique experiences from their culture and travels into their menu. Rich with classics like ceviche, and flautas; be prepared to enjoy an array of steak, fish, and other creative preparations. The staff is genuinely attentive and treasures the pure enjoyment their food brings to their patrons. Such a precious gem!!!
Be the first to ReplyI cannot believe Chilam Balam only has 3.
5 stars. I suppose it is quite hyped up being on Food Network AND the Michelin guide, but I think it's appropriately hyped!! We came here on a Tuesday after making reservations via email. It wasn't very busy and the space was cosy. Right from the start we had fantastic service. Our server (Jose I think) was so inviting and gave great recommendations on the menu. We brought a bottle of wine (yesss BYOB!!) and he recommended we put it in their sangria. Excellent choice. He also recommended a few dishes that ended up being our favorites. Guacamole - very good, it's guac.Roasted Root Vegetables with Date Mole - Holyyyyyy yummmm this was phenomenal. I would come back just to eat three orders of this. Artichoke Empanadas - super cheesy and delicious with a yummy salsa.Flautas with Chicken - my second favorite behind the mole! So flavorful and perfectly executed.Plato Placero with Beef Brisket - yummm. This was like a build your own plate with brisket, tortillas and tortas, lettuce wraps, some veggies, plantains, and giant chunks of Queso Oaxaca. I don't eat beef but I watched it fall of everyone else's forks because it was so tender. I ate the giant cheese chunks dipped in both amazing sauces. Sweet Empanada w Peanut Butter - heavenly!! Fantastic with the chocolate and caramel sauces. Keep in mind they are CASH ONLY or also venmo. And BYOB, conveniently right across the street from Walmart. High end, sharing style plates, and great service. I'll definitely be back.
Be the first to ReplyMexican fusion served up with hostility.
Our party of four arrived and seated at a small table. It's a tight fit in the basement made all the more uncomfortable on a 90 degree day with no air conditioning in the restaurant. BYOB but told you can't open win until you place order. You can't pour your tequila at all since you're having wine. You must place full orders all at once. Everyone must order two items. All presented in a Seinfeld "Soup Nazi" tone. Food came out rapidly. So fast that given size of table we had salad bowls on our laps, stacking plates and consolidating tapas to make room on table. You need a playbook here and a boatload of empathy. Won't be back
Be the first to ReplyFive stars all the way! After living in the neighborhood
Five stars all the way! After living in the neighborhood and passing by this place all the time, my spouse and I finally went in. And we were IMPRESSED! My spouse is celiac (gluten intolerant) and we were surprised and excited that the menu had a majority of gluten free dishes with no cross contamination. The food was delicious - we had three shareable plates (empanadas, tuna, and beef short ribs) and two desserts (peanut butter empanadas with chocolate and caramel sauces and a beautiful chocolate mousse). Everything and I mean everything was perfectly prepared, fresh with sharp flavors, great portions, and served in sequence so as to enjoy each dish as a separate course. Our server was also the owner and she was welcoming and explained the menu with nice detail. Overall this is a gem in the neighborhood and a restaurant that has wonderful ambiance with authenticity and locality in the food offered. Definitely coming back here again and coming often!
Be the first to ReplyDinner here was amazing.
Our server informed us that she was celiac as well, and that all the items on the menu with the exception of one dessert item are gluten-free. What a pleasant surprise! She also stated that the menu is updated weekly, so I'd recommend always asking about what items are gluten-free. All the food was very well prepared. Perfectly cooked and seasoned. Small plates. We had the empanadas, beef short ribs, and tuna for dinner, and more empanadas and a mousse for dessert. The menu was not marked with gluten-free tags.
Be the first to ReplyTook us 6 years in the neighborhood to find this place.
Really yummy, thoughtful dishes and great local feel.

I wish I could comment on how fabulous the food is, but I never got that far. In all of my years, I have never been to a restaurant where the staff was so rude and aggressive that my food was removed from the table before the first bite. The staff at Chilam has no interest in serving their guests - only in bullying them into ordering as many dishes as possible to justify the BYOB option that they promote. Their inconsistent BYOB policy, their horrible temper, and their entitled attitude was so offensive that we will never step foot in that restaurant again. But they don't care. Because we questioned their inconsistent BYOB policy that was not inline with any other restaurant in the city's and because they didn't think our 3 entrees, a side and an appetizer was enough food, they told us they didn't need to serve us and ripped our dish off of the table. It's very clear that this restaurant does not care about their repeat guests nor do they care about their first time diners. I honestly don't think they care about serving anyone at all. Do yourselves a favor and keep walking until you get to Buena Vista. And here's hoping the staff seeks out some anger management classes.
