Wonderful intimate restaurant with authentic cuisine.
Brought my father back to when he lived in Ethiopia in the late 60s
Be the first to ReplyMy go to Ethiopian food in DC.
We split the vegan special to go which comes with 7 veg estarían specials. My favorite is the carrots with string beans. Everything is well flavored and extremely filling. The food can take awhile to come out, but it's always served hot and fresh. Their online ordering has a convenience fee that I don't like, but other than that I would definitely get it to go again!

I was very excited to try this place, especially since it has received multiple good reviews and recognition, but was ultimately disappointed by both the food and the service. Upon entering the restaurant, our party was first instructed to sit at the bar area. Shortly after, we were instructed to move to a two-person table. After ordering our food, we were instructed to move to another two-person table. In total, we sat at three different tables, which is very unusual. The restaurant wasn't even busy when we arrived. I would suggest implementing a better system to seat customers, as it was frustrating having to get settled and then being asked repeatedly to move. The honey wine was pretty good, but the vegan special was mid and not memorable. You don't get to choose what's on your plate; ours consisted of the salad, two types of lentils, collard greens, cabbage, chickpeas, and string beans and carrots. Everything is at room temperature. Unfortunately, there was something hard I bit into when eating the lentils, which was discouraging. I did like how the servers would occasionally go around and pass out more injera to customers when they were running low. However, there was not much interaction between us outside of that, as they did not stop by our table to talk to us or ask us about our food. Other tables were able to receive more interaction with them though, which somewhat explains the difference in experiences.
Be the first to ReplyThis place is a Michelin star restaurant for a reason.
The food is absolutely amazing! I asked for their recommendation and got the spicy lamb dish and a vegan special. Both were super flavorful and had good portion sizes. The place was really busy and everyone who tried to walk in was given at least 40minute wait, but I was alone so I was able to get a seat at the bar really quickly. This is an amazing place for solo dining as the staff are nice and food comes out quickly once you are seated. Since it is busy, there is always noise around, so you don't feel awkward sitting alone, and there is plenty of people watching you can do.

I came here with a friend two weekends ago because I was craving Ethiopian food, and this place did not disappoint! The flavors were delicious, though next time I might ask for a little more spice since I'd like a little bit more of a kick! (I have medium spice tolerance). We got the Chercher vegan special and then two meat dishes (doro wot with the chicken drum sticks and the Ybeg tibs), which was plenty of food for two people! Highly recommend both of the meat dishes as the flavor was great, the meat tender, and very filling! The vegan special was great to try a variety of options, and I would say my favorites of the vegan special were probably the Ye'ater Kik Alecha we't and the Tikil Gomen as those tend to be my favoriate vegetarian Ethiopian dishes, but they weren't quite as amazing standouts as the two meat dishes. We also got to try the dry red Acacia wine which was very pleasant and fun to try! It actually wasn't too dry in my opinion and was pretty flavorful. The service was very friendly, but sometimes because the restaurant was so busy and crowded it took a little bit of time to wave someone down if we needed more injeera. We also were sat outside in the patio, which I imagine during the summer is an excellent place to eat, but in early spring, it might be helpful to add one or two extra heaters. All in all, a great meal and a great time that I'd like to come back to, but be prepared for a wait if you don't get reservations!

This was my first experience trying Ethiopian food and this place was amazing! The service was very friendly and attentive and the restaurant was bustling with energy. Very much recommend!

Our group of eight was able to sit in their second floor area immediately. We had two vegan deluxe combos, and added an order of chicken and an order of beef - this was a wonderful way to try a variety of options for our group. We also gave their Ethiopian Cabernet Sauvignon a try. Great food experience, nice service, no frills. Would happily check them out again.

Review for take-out only - Many restaurants/foods do not translate well to take-out. Portion sizes change, flavors and texture change, or it's just not the same when brought home. However, Chercher's method of lining the take out containers with the injera the plopping scoops of vegetables and stews works extremely well. You might need an extra injera for finger scooping. Just as delicious with take-out as dine-in ....

The food was amazing, and the service was perfectly attentive and friendly. The place is small but back patio suited us well. Definitely making it our neighborhood Ethiopian.
Be the first to ReplyThis is probably my favorite restaurant in MD.
The house special tibs are so so good and I really enjoy the vegan deluxe. This restaurant has a really nice ambiance too. I did come here one time and they didn't serve the vegan deluxe with the bread, I had to walk to the waitress to ask because the food was getting cold and then they didn't bring out the beef ribs until I was ready to pay the tab. It was a pretty bad experience tbh, but we've just gotten take out ever since so we haven't had any issues. Maybe the waitress was new?

I came here twice on a weekend trip to DC because it was that good. We got the beef special tibs and the vegan special. Everything was so good. My only complaint is the inside is a bit tight and our table was a little dirty. A must try in the DC area.

Be the first to ReplySmall but quaint restaurant.
Initially I just thought I didn't like Ethiopian food but this food was so dang good. I had the vegetarian special and the beef tibs with a few sambusas. Absolutely amazing food and completely changed how I looked at Ethiopian food. Everything was so good and I'm completely full. 1 meal can feed 2. Service was fine water wasn't a problem and ordering was quick. Amazing food
Be the first to ReplyDelicious and one of the best meals we had while in DC.
The service was great and the coffee was wonderfully strong.
Be the first to ReplyI happened upon this place when a friend recommended we go
I happened upon this place when a friend recommended we go grab Ethiopian while in Washington DC. I had no idea about the accolades this place had received, but they are well deserved! It's located in what appears to be a renovated house with seating, downstairs and upstairs. The decor is very classic and the ambience is absolutely spectacular. The place is a great combination of classy, lively, and relaxed. It's very Ethiopian! The folks working here were top-notch, knew their stuff and made some great recommendations. They took really good care of our group which included in a number of small children. We were seated upstairs promptly, and they got our food out very quickly. The food was absolutely delicious! Standard Ethiopian fair with lots of vegetarian options, some great Tibs (roasted meat) and an actual selection of honey wine (Tej). Having eaten at a lot of Ethiopian places, I will say that it's very rare to actually find a place that has more than one option. I found the mamas Taj to be quite delicious. The place has been on the Michelin list a number of times, and it's absolutely deserved. If you're in the area, this is a spot that you need to go check out!
Be the first to ReplyFirst time Ethiopian.
.....I am sure it was very good. However, bit to spicy for me and I need a fork......but I gave it a go. Sure it is superior, just not my cup of tea. My bottle of beer was good though.....

Off the charts! We were visiting DC for a conference and have had decent Ethiopian food in this town before, so decided to try this place and were blown away! It is SO GOOD! We had the deluxe vegan platter and every single item was beyond yummy. We were stuffed but couldn't stop eating! Seek it out if you're in DC!
Be the first to ReplyChercher is the closest Ethiopian restaurant to us.
We have been here a couple of times when they opened, but when we went there recently, to our surprise the restaurant was packed on a weekday. Glad the restaurant is doing well. We sat their small bar area and ordered combo with chicken and eggs. It had 5 vegetarian dishes (3 types of lentils , tomato and lettuce and pepper with chicken Dora wat and egg). Enjira is their bread which was so good. Very soft and they also have one extra. Highly recommend local African lager to go with it. Food was very delicious. Chicken was very tender and the sauce was delicious. Ambiance is good. Nothing too fancy. It's a casual place. They have seating in the basement as well. Parking could be hard to find in this area. We usually walk to this neighborhood.
Be the first to ReplyGreat food and exceptional service.
I wanted in on a Thursday night with no reservations and was able to go right up to the bar and eat. The staff was very friendly and helpful. I'll absolutely be back.
Be the first to ReplyRecently dined at Cher Cher to savor Ethiopian cuisine, and
Recently dined at Cher Cher to savor Ethiopian cuisine, and it was somewhat a good experience with fancy, unique dishes that we hadn't tried before. The culinary adventure brought us delightful flavors at a reasonable price and introduced us to a whole new world of tastes. While the food left a positive impression, I must mention that the service could use some improvement. The woman who served us appeared to be somewhat rude, which detracted from the overall enjoyment of the meal. Polite and attentive service is crucial to enhancing the dining experience, and I believe that addressing this aspect would significantly elevate the restaurant's appeal. Despite this, the intriguing flavors of the Ethiopian dishes make Cher Cher a worthwhile spot for those seeking culinary exploration.
Be the first to ReplyBest experience of my short three-day work trip.
I came here with two colleagues after an on-site workshop, ordered what most reviewers have been recommending (2 Beef Tips and the Vegan Platter Deluxe) and wow!Our server dumped both bowls of meat into the middle of the vegan platter tray and we all went to town with our injera! The beef was cooked so perfectly tender and I had a few faves from the vegan platter that had a kick to them. All in all, we enjoyed EVERY bite! It's a hole-in-the-wall restaurant in a townhome, go up the stairs to the front door and the main entrance is to the right. More than likely, there will be a wait and you may get sent upstairs to order drinks and/or view the menu until it's your time to join the main room for dinner. We waited 10minutes and then another 15minutes and the bar before being seated at our table. Nonetheless, I'd wait all over again for the food! 100% worth it
Be the first to ReplySome of the best food I have ever had.
I would literally fly back to DC just for the Ethiopian food it is that good. Small place but it's not difficult to get a seat. They sit you up at the bar while you wait or you can just order at the bar. All eaten by hand so if you're not into that then this isn't the place for you but we loved it! Nicest ladies that run the place too. They don't take reservations so it's just first come first serve.
Be the first to ReplySmall, quaint restaurant.
Attentive service and as close to home made as we've ever had at a restaurant (on the east coast). Highly recommend! Our whole family - kids & adults - loved it! We'll be back.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing place.
It is very small and fills up very quickly. We were lucky to get one of the last tables. The flavors are amazing. I've never had lentils that were so flavorful and unmushy. There is unlimited injera bread, the only challenge is eating the deliciousness with the elegance it deserves!
