Letter from a distraught super fan
This has been one of my favorite restaurants in Los Angeles for years. I've eaten everything on the menu -- most multiple, multiple times. I even thought about naming my first child, "Charcoal." But in the name of Josiah Citrin -- what have you let happen, sir???? We came in September and also four weeks earlier in August and the food is still amazing. Just great. The Midnight Margaritas are such a delight. The steaks are exceptional. I could eat the smoked wings every single day the rest of my life. It's the service that has devolved into an unrecognizable monstrosity. I haven't been back since the last two horrific experiences, and frankly I just don't understand what happened. Or maybe my heart won't allow my brain to admit it. Eric the bartender was still terrific (and still provided exceptional service). But for maybe three or four visits straight now, the rest of our service was RIDICULOUS. A waitress was outright rude to my family members. Servers would disappear for 20+ minutes at a time. I had to wave my arms for a check like I was signalling a cab in NYC. I've put off writing this for a while because it pains me. It feels like a breakup. I am crying as I type these words, but I kept thinking: "maybe they don't even know... and if I were them, I would want someone to tell me." So I am telling you. Hopefully you'll read this one day. I'll always love you. I'm so sorry for everything.

Sarah, our server, was friendly and helpful but never intrusive. We went for some bread to start with the blackened cabbage. Sounds boring but was devine. Then had Alaskan Halibut, and Wagyu beef with potato and broccolini. Absolutely delicious. One of, if not the best, meals weโve had. A casual, lively but at the same time intimate experience I cannot recommend Charcoal enough. A must do restaurant when in LA.

Be the first to ReplyLong Wait for Mediocre Food
Our dinner experience at Charcoal left a lot to be desired. We ordered the char-grilled cabbage, the calamari, a bison ribeye, a prime beef ribeye and steak fries . The cabbage arrived 2 minutes after being ordered and the calamari about 5 minutes later. Then we waited, and waited, and waited, and waited--for 45 minutes--for the steaks and fries to arrive. Numerous times we inquired about the status of the order, only to be assured that it would be out "in two minutes". The quality of the food is ok-to-good. --The char-grilled cabbage is unusual, but good. --The calamari was ordinary at best. --The two steaks were ok, certainly not worth the price and definitely not worth the 45 minutes wait. --The steak fries were ordinary. --The chocolate peanut butter cake was the best dish of the meal. The restaurant is either badly understaffed or very disorganized. There seemed to be only one waiter for the entire patio. Other tables joined us in vying for his attention. One group of diners brought two dogs, one of which barked throughout the meal, while its owners and the restaurant management did nothing. Charcoal wants to be an upscale steakhouse. The only thing upscale about it are its prices, which are not justified by the quality of the food or the service.
Be the first to ReplyGreat restaurant in Venice, CA.
Five star food and service. Went there twice in one week during a recent visit to Southern California. A wide variety of entrees and sides superbly prepared.
Be the first to ReplyGood food, nothing special
The food quality was really good, the innovation in the menu was not apparent. The service was spotty at best. The order came out wrong and was brought back to the table on a side plate (it should have been re-plated correctly). There was a Kitchen Appreciation Fee - had that removed since the kitchen did not do its job, nor did it seem to care as seen in how it was delivered. For the supposed inventive cuisine - dunno where it went - the flavors were muddled. The wine was mediocre at best. The server tried to be interested in our welfare but since we had to flag him down clearly he was waiting too many tables. We ended up spending over two hours for a good (not great) meal that was quite expensive for what it was. Not worth the trek to Venice when better options exist.
Be the first to ReplyAn Excellent Steakhouse!
The food was excellent with the exception of the chopped salad, which was boring. Sides and drinks were good. The other negative was the street noise while dining outside. There really isn't a patio as advertised.

The server was very nice. They were very flexible about allowing us to share plates. The wine list was well put together. Not extensive but a variety of choices of regions and price points. Meat dishes can be ordered in different sizes and split. Steak was good.

Charcoal
Thereโs a couple things at this restaurant that weโve never had before, one was, a kitchen appreciation tax. Iโve never seen this ever. The other was, Fermented jalapeรฑo vinegar.
The oysters were served with a passion fruit mignonette.
They have a cooler of many varieties of steaks, differently aged from days, two weeks, to even months.
We enjoyed everything that was there but I felt that they were very proud of their prices. It was loud, Nor did I think the service was that grand.
I WOULD probably go back for a cocktail or glass of vine but wasnโt that impressed on what they charged for their age steaks.
Not terribly interested in ADA requirements, beware!
Our second time here, this time was just awful. I have a temporary back problem due to assisting my mother through her home hospice care. Over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, we decided to take our adult children and partners to dinner, and chose Charcoal based on our experience 11 months ago. I distinctly remember sitting in a booth with a back. There were chairs in the dining room, too, with backs. So I was surprised and disappointed upon arrival this time to be directed to a 30" high (bar style) table with backless bar stools.
The uncomfortable backless bar stools and my back problem weren't going to mesh.
We requested to be moved to the dining area, regular tables and chairs, one was already set for 6. At 6:00 pm, there were few diners and lots of empty tables. The owner or manager was not willing to give that table to us (someone else requested it). Nor was he willing to set up a different part of this empty restaurant to accommodate us. He said we should have mentioned the handicap when we called. I responded by mentioning that I'd never been in a sit down, fine dining restaurant with backless seats! And those backless seats can only be found at the large tables, where all groups of 6 MUST sit, or the bar.
Here is the law: "The ADA is a civil rights law that prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in all areas of public life, including jobs, schools, transportation, and all public and private places that are open to the general public. The purpose of the law is to make sure that people with disabilities have the same rights and opportunities as everyone else. "
So, Chef Citrin, how is it you don't need to accommodate patrons with disabilities? I pressed your manager (I do believe it was you) hard in person about this, he REFUSED to try to accommodate us. Not even an apology. FYI, there are bar chairs with backs, you need some.
Here is what we did instead: drove to La Cabana on Rose at Lincoln, got a big booth for 6, and enjoyed a fun and reasonably priced Mexican meal where the staff was smiling, friendly and accommodating. I recommend others reading this review do the same. Save your $$ for a friendly restaurant owner.
Night out
Wow, heard it was good and was not disappointed. Food was superb, service really good, not in your face but attentive enough. Drinks are a bit pricey but overall an excellent experience.

and onto our plates.
With a name like "Charcoal," you might think this would be a meat-centric restaurant, and you'd be right...to a point. Charcoal is dedicated to teh propoition that fire improves everything. Their cabbage baked in the embers with its citrusy sumac yogurt was actually rich and filled with unexpected flavors. The roast carrots were more traditional but no less tasty. The skirt steak had tremendously big flavor and the accompanying sauces, particularly the garlicy chimmichuri, exploded in the mouth.
This is the kind of place where you might not expect much for dessert, but Charcoal brought their trademark to the final course as well. The Chocolate Peanut Butter Crunch Cake with McConnellโs Double Peanut Butter Chip Ice Cream was, well, evil. I want the extra inch of waistline back, it was so amazing
I am looking forward to trying (and probbly failing) to duplicate some of their recipes!
Although a touch pricey -- we came close to $200 -- the experience was top notch. I would happily return.
Birthday celebration
very good food, good quality products and exceptional taste. the "front desk" mediocre but the waiter was awesome. rather expensive
Be the first to ReplyThe best experience!
I've never eaten such a good miso marinated cod!
Charcoal Margerita is something everyone needs to try! There is only one more place where they serving it as it's in London.
If only the prices would be more affordable, I would be there every day of my visit.
