Highlights of San Sebastián
The highlight of our evening in the old town at San Sebastián… a real find amidst the tacky, touristy & pre-made pintxos bars around. The food was exceptional. We had squab pigeon with mushroom duxelles, artichokes & pumpkin sauce and steak with a potato foam. All gorgeous and value for money. Recommend.

Had a relaxed lunch here with a friend in the restaurant area upstairs, where we were greeted warmly. Unfortunately a lot of their signature dishes were unavailable due because produce was out of season but we did enjoy the lobster and octopus dishes we ordered. The portions are decent sized and delicious.
Be the first to ReplyFantastic pinxtos in the old town of San Sebastian
After walking around the old town I walked past a place that I remember seeing in a magazine so decided to pop in . Pleased to see it was a great choice . The choice of pinxtos were really good so I opted for the scallop in vinegarette , croquettes and the steak with potato puree and peppers. The food was absolutely delightful. The croquettes were light with a lovely filling of ham and cheese . The scallops were cooked to perfection plus the sauce was out of this world . The steak was melt in the mouth . If you are looking for pinxtos in the old town then this is definitely one of my recommended places.
Be the first to ReplyA perfect place for lunch
Last month, my wife and I and a traveling companion enjoyed a lunch at the Casa Urola. We reserved it a day after an excellent dinner elsewhere and we were not disappointed in the slightest with the quality of the food. The restaurant itself, at least during lunch, is on the second floor of the eponymous bar and the whole zeitgeist changes dramatically as one ascends those stairs. Clean lines, lovely interior, beautiful silverware – all is remarkable and welcome change from the hustle and bustle of the Donostia’s old town and the food proved delicious. While our lunches were simple (two steaks for my companions and a perfectly cooked fish for me), the care that went into the prep and presentation were obvious. We did not have a change to have dinner there and so this review is abbreviated, and the rating reflects a few very minor slips in service. Please do not let this discourage you. This place has the potential to be a remarkable dinner spot.

Very disappointing menu half was unavailable I saw food arriving at other tables and knew we had made a mistake very average restaurant My wife’s hake was cold I switched to avoid complication so ordered the most basic steak and iberico ham which was when it arrived very basic the starters were very average and the main courses below what you would expect from a restaurant at this level started in 1956 and still stick there.
Be the first to ReplyA not very bright star…
Sometimes everything goes wrong and so it did! The appetizer arrived at the same time as the starter, from the kitchen came the notification that the main course for the ‘Holandezi’ (we,) was ready, again, at the same moment. The main fish course arrived partly raw, was reheated in the microwave oven and returned without apology; the other main dish, grilled foie gras, arrived lukewarm, due to the waiting. At the same time the personnel didn’t make us feel very welcome. Not what you expect at a Michelin star restaurant…

We booked this restaurant after reading several good recommendations. I am scratching my head as to why this restaurant is rated so highly. There were four of us having dinner. We shared a couple of starters which were plain but tasty. Two of our party shared the Cote de Boeuf and one had the Octopus for main course. They were fine but nothing out of the ordinary that you couldn't get anywhere else in the world. They were not the typical creative, incredible dishes you could normally get in San Sebastian - which is one of the foodie capitals of the world. I ordered the "Blackened Monkfish" with salad instead of potatoes. Of course, it came smothered in potatoes and no salad but the most surprising thing is that there was no "blackening" - just a very bland lukewarm tasteless piece of fish with no seasoning or flavour at all. I had to add a lot of salt and pepper to make it edible...However, the worst part was the service. The two older ladies were warm and welcoming - however, the young waitress with the black gloves who served our table was one of the worst waitresses I have ever experienced! She is someone who really does not enjoy her job! She literally threw things at us, such as cutlery, bread, splashed the wine all over us...She was extremely clumsy and very rude and unfriendly. At one point, I asked for more bread, and she brought me the bread basket with a few small end pieces remaining which were rock hard. Teeth breaking material! When I asked for another piece that I could eat, she just shrugged and walked off. The service was so bad that it was literally funny and we ended up laughing about the whole experience. Do yourself a favour - find another restaurant - there are so many good ones in San Sebastian.
On the plus side - the wine we ordered was very, very good and was the most enjoyable part of the whole evening. The whole meal was also very expensive - around 90 euros per person.
Eat upstairs in the restaurant!
When entering downstairs at street level one might think "what is this", but when you get upstairs everything changes. The food is amazing, which is to be expected and they have a great wine list and unbeatable prices like on Gran Reserva 904 which is a truly amazing Rioja. We really had a very good meal.

This place - both the bar and their restaurant - was highly recommended by locals on TripAdvisor. We decided to go for pintxos at the bar - there is no English menu and everything was listed on the chalkboards. There were one or two staff who spoke English well and very kindly and patiently translated everything on the menu for us. We went late in the afternoon and was fortunate to get a table immediately.
We tried lots of pintxos - the octopus, mushroom tart (this was delicious), lobster salad, scallop in cold soup (this is their signature pintxo), another prawn salad, catfish stew, foie gras, steak, and a huge plate of deep-fried tiny shrimps. The torrijas with coffee ice cream was so delicious!
Exquisite food in a simple setting.
Very nice, friendly and efficient service at the bar. Amazing pintxos. We particularly liked the one with scallop. Very commendable experience.
