Dinner before a show
Early dinner before a show and this place is not to be missed! It says its a NY institution and now i know why. Brilliant atmosphere, lovely people and amazing food. Portions are huge as the reviews say, but speak to the servers and they will guide you. We were a couple and thoroughly enjoyed it.
Be the first to ReplyFOR LARGE groups, not couples
We were seated at a two-top outdoors and waited and waited for anyone at all to acknowledge our presence. Finally our drink order was taken and a basket of bread tossed on the table. After another long wait we received glasses of water but not the wine we had ordered. Then the server told us that all of the entrees were family-sized for 3-4 people minimum and nothing on the menu was appropriate for two, except possibly the appetizers. We understood then why the couple next to us left with only half of their food eaten and had offered to share with us when we arrived! Looked like a great place for families or large groups but not couples, so the tables for two donโt really make sense, and that info wouldโve been good to know up-front before a 30-minute wait. We left without ordering (and the wine never arrived!)

As a native New Yorker I knew Carmines is a well oiled machine and our recent visit proved they're still at the top of their game. We were a party of 13, which increased to 15 at dinner time, went after a Saturday play matinee, which also happened to be the same day as the St. Patty's day parade, so 'busy' just begins to describe the restaurant and the city. Reservations are always a must on weekends and were were very happy they could add the 2 people at the last minute. We had time between the play ending and our reservation, so when we checked in and their bar area was packed, they had a couple of recommendations on bars to go for to wait, and they had my cell in case they needed us. Our table was ready on time (which in itself is pretty amazing) and the service and food were perfect. I'm a Veal fan and the Veal marsala was delicious We (and I think almost all the tables around us) were also celebrating a birthday and they did a nice job singing. For those unfamiliar with Carmines, its family style, meaning you order a few dishes to share for the table. The wait staff has done this before, so rely on them on to figure out how much salad, appetizers and entrees to order. Our waiter was spot on, very little left over, with everyone very full, so no oversell at all. We also had some food sensitivities and our waiter listened, recommended and delivered. We went with the double size bottle of carmines house red and white wine which was very reasonably priced, (they have a large selection of other wines to choose from if you want higher end.) The bill was very reasonable, no hidden services charges or upcharge for using a credit card. Overall a strong recommend
Be the first to Reply5 star food and service
Meals are delicious (and huge) we could have ordered 2 pasta dishes between the 6 of us. The atmosphere is brilliant, the food was 5 star. Highly recommend! This restaurant made our first night in NYC!
Be the first to ReplyGreat family place
The food was lovely but he prepared for the HUGE portions! I went with my partner and we were advised to share 1 appetizer and 1 main meal between us. This was still far too much! We ordered the garlic bread to start, this was 9 pieces with cheese on! We took the leftovers back to our hotel so nothing went to waste! Reasonably priced and even better is you go in a larger group as you can share the food.

Had a resy for the 6 of us set up after we took our kids and grandkids to see Wicked. The weather in NY last Saturday was windy, and very very rainy. Was great to warm up over some fabulous food served at Carmines. Never disappoints. And we love the noise of the place. Best atmosphere around! Was a great way to complete a terrific day despite the weather.
Be the first to ReplyFun place for birthday dinner!
My wife and I came here for my birthday in late February. Our veal scaloppini was exquisite, with a light lemony sauce (without capers, thankfully) on a bed of sautรฉed spinach. It was a generous portion for two which suited us just fine; some of the other dishes have quantities large enough for entire football teams! We didnโt need pasta, but itโs odd that Carmineโs didnโt add a small portion to the dish just to round things out. Weโre talking spaghetti not saffron oysters. Our only option was to order a family side which would have been total overkill. The restaurant staff came by to sing Happy Birthday in unison when presenting our chocolate pistachio cannolis. One even had a candle. That was a nice touch. Conversely, I didnโt really care for our waitress. She seemed a bit disappointed by our modest order (we were two โ not five people), her voice was barely audible, her nose showed signs of nasal discharge, and she dismissed (as in blew off) my polite attempts to exchange a few words in Spanish after hearing her explain the menu to a nearby table of Latinos. I also felt duped by the gal who seated us in the elegant (but noisy) main dining room even though I had explicitly requested upstairs seating in my reservation. She claimed that they didnโt seat upstairs so early, but later I took a stroll, found the area bustling with people, and learned from the waiters there that they actually started serving 30 minutes before we arrived. Carmineโs must remember rule number one: Do not lie to your customers, *especially* Cherry Wonderdog! I would certainly return to Carmines โ itโs a classy, fun restaurant. The food alone was worth it, and given the portion sizes, the value was quite high, particularly at New York standards. Nevertheless, given the aforementioned minor issues related to treatment of care, Cherry Wonderdog has no choice but to deduct one star from the coveted Cherry Wonderdog culinary scale.

Absolute worst waiter in a long time - his name tag said Edwin, back of the restaurant section. What an absolutely terrible attitude. What a poor approach to customer service. Edwin should be reprimanded / fired by Carmines. Shame on Edwin for his several insulting comments and treating our table the way he did - Edwin ruined our evening and our experience at Carmines.
Be the first to ReplyBest Service in the Big Apple!
We have been enjoying this restaurant for years on our visits to the Big Apple. We are especially happy to be back in NYC right now and always happy to go to Carmineโs. Weโve been twice on this trip already and we had the same bartender Junior on our second visit this week. He remembered everything about us, including where we are from where we lived before that and treated as with the most professionalism. I canโt recommend this business more. Itโs a very busy place, but just walk in and go to the bar. Donโt wait for reservations if itโs just two of you and youโll be lucky if you get Junior as your bartender/waiter.
Be the first to ReplyFood good but be prepared to wait a long time for it
Before we'd even sat down, we were told 3 times they would need our table after 90 minutes. OK, no problem. We'd already looked at the menu online and knew what we wanted. We also only ordered entrees (not apps, salads, desserts, etc). Two entrees (1 steak and 1 pasta) for 4 of us, and we ordered not long after being seated. The waitress even said "that's it? that's all you want?". However, the food took literally *60 minutes* to get to our table. (We'd even asked our waitress to either bring out one of the entrees ahead of the other if it was ready, or a small bowl of pasta or something for my youngest son to start eating, but that didn't happen). So 60 minutes after we ordered, the food came out, yet they expected us to scarf down two humongous plates of food in less than 30 minutes, in order to stick to the time "allotment" they'd given us? My youngest son actually got a stomachache because he came a little hungry, then had to wait an hour, then ate too much too fast once his food arrived. The food IS good, but if you come here, make sure you & your party are all OK with waiting a long time for it.
Be the first to ReplyVery exceptional dining experience.
Many time return patron. Very exceptional dining experience, as always. Nothing like it in the city.
Be the first to ReplyCarmineโs was just awful the worst food I have ever hadโฆ..
Carmineโs was recommended so we booked it for our sons 18th birthday. The atmosphere was terrific however the food was most probably the worst food I have ever been served. The calamari was so chewy and was served Luke warm. We ordered their speciality which was bland Chicken dish. Even the pasta dish which was impossible to get wrong was not hot and frankly tasteless. Could not wait to get out of the placeโฆ..Please do waste your time or money. So disappointing the place was busy but really donโt go here.
Be the first to ReplyGreat food but way too loud!
Excellent food! Waiter, Edwin, was really good. Atmosphere was loud and we met up with some friends from NYC and were visiting and got asked to leave because they needed the table. That was disappointing. Yet, Overall it was a great experience.

Be the first to ReplyThe best Italian food experience after theatre.
Fabulous dinner after a play. Within walking distance. The food is amazing. Best meatballs you can eat. The lasagna was superb. The spiiedini could not be beat. The most flavorful and tender chicken scarpariello . No better broccoli rabe anywhere. Finally, the bread pudding, again, fabulous.
Be the first to ReplyPerfect New York dinner
Wow. Right across from many of broadwayโs most popular plays, this is the heart of Times Square. The food was excellent. We ate at the bar and the whole experience was just delightful, and while not cheap, it was less expensive than it could have been. A real bargain. We loved our meal here and cannot wait to return.
Be the first to ReplyAn excellent lunch before a show!
Even though it was absolutely packed, we had excellent service and food! Can't wait to come back! I think it would be more of an experience with a group larger than just the two of us. I didn't realize when I made the reservation for my friend and I that it was family style even for just two people. I think you should make that clearer on your website. It was delicious and next time, we'll bring more friends!
Be the first to ReplyGreat spot before or after the show
We stopped in for drinks prior to Broadway Show Lion King. The place is a very busy spot on Broadway but beautiful ly appointed. The food all around us looked great.

While visiting Manhattan July of this year my Sister took me and my wife to Carmine's for lunch. Since we are from Brooklyn originally, but have lived in Northern California since 1972 we were craving good Italian food. we were not disappointed . The food and service were great.
Be the first to ReplyTerrible food, horrible waitress
We as a family had a terrible experience in this restaurant with the food & with our waitress, the food was very poor & the waitress was very rude, which we do NOT expect when we are on vacation from Scotland & I must say itโs the only time that someone was rude to us in New York, needless to say we will never go back to this restaurant but we will definitely be back to New York which we loved.
Be the first to ReplyGreat not excellent
Good authentic food, huge portions, too much salt. A bit pricey and overrated, the waitstaff behaved like hustlers. It was overdone, the whole experience. I will try it again to see consistency. Overall good eats.
Be the first to ReplyGREAT VALUE, FOOD AND SERVICE
Food is served family style. We had a group of 4 people. We ordered a fish, meat and pasta. We had plenty of leftovers. Good food for the price.
Be the first to ReplyDisappointing. Not worth the hype
Hoping for a traditional Italian/American dining experience. We were met at the door by two unfriendly 'bouncer type' doormen. They were impolite and unwelcoming. We were shown to our table where 'the bread guy' plonked our bread down without saying a word and with a face like thunder. Our waiter hardly spoke. Ragu was OK. Complimentary bread was the tastiest part. ยฃ85 for the meal which I wouldn't mind but it was very ordinary, unremarkable and totally lacking in service. The establishment looks nice but really not worth the excitement. Wouldn't recommend.
