Nestled in an intimate space adorned with elegant design
Nestled in an intimate space adorned with elegant design elements and verdant potted plants, including charming small olive trees, this quaint establishment exudes a refined ambiance. From the moment we stepped in, it became evident that exceptional service was the cornerstone of our dining experience--a rarity in Toronto's bustling culinary scene of recent years. Our expectations were set high, and they were met with flying colors. We commenced our culinary journey with a delightful gesture--a complimentary offering of fresh, warm bread infused with fragrant rosemary and drizzled with luscious olive oil. A promising start indeed. We informed a server that we'll share an appetizer, and opted for the Calamari Alla Griglia ($22), a dish that arrived elegantly presented on two plates (a standard practice these days that an extra plate or two are brought as well, but properly and nicely presented smaller portions were a great gesture!). The grilled calamari, cooked to perfection, boasted a tender texture, complemented exquisitely by the warmth of Moroccan black olives and the vibrant scallion tomato salsa. Each bite was a harmonious blend of flavors, with the olives providing a pleasing hint of bitterness to balance the dish. Moving on to the main course, the Filetto Di Manzo ($65) stole the spotlight--a grilled beef tenderloin adorned with a decadent foie gras torchon and drizzled with a rich Barolo wine reduction. Paired with creamy mashed potatoes and grilled vegetables, every element of this dish danced on the palate. The steak, cooked to a flawless medium-rare, melted in the mouth, while the seared foie gras added a luxurious touch with its velvety texture and subtle sweetness, perfectly offsetting the bitterness of the wine reduction. It was a culinary masterpiece, surpassing even our most recent steak experiences. The Osso Bucco Alla Milanese ($50), served with risotto, proved to be another delightful surprise. Though not our usual choice, this rendition impressed with its tender, flavorful meat and a tantalizing addition of bone marrow, expertly highlighted by a special spoon provided for maximum enjoyment. As we concluded our meal, the desserts did not disappoint. The Tiramisu and Crรจme Brรปlรฉe were both standout desserts, with the Tiramisu being the best in Toronto in the last five years (although, I have to admit that about a year ago tasted even a better one in Florida, and the Crรจme Brรปlรฉe is taking the top spot in our dessert list for the same period. In summary, this dining experience transcended mere gastronomy--it was a symphony of flavors orchestrated to perfection - in addition to its elegant ambiance - left an indelible mark on our palates and memories.

The interior is nicer than the pictures! Food was decent and came very quickly, but the server was somewhat unwelcoming and made the dining experience not as enjoyable. It seemed that he did not want to be serving us (perhaps because we did not order any drinks or antipasti).

Great service, great wine list and nice space. I ordered the veal Milanese which is described on the menu as a breaded veal chop with arugula salad. What I was served was one small breaded veal cutlet (not a veal chop as advertised). I cannot imagine how they can justify charging $45 for this. I left feeling hungry and ripped off.

The waiting staff was very attentive, and provide good advice for our order. We were seated at the round table. For the folks that's sitting inside, the seats can be tight and not the most comfortable. Food is nicely presented, what's rememberable is our order of steak was served with rosemary flambรฉ. It was quite a scene. To bad, due to the crowd I was with, photo of the menu is not available. Other food like truffle pasta, grill calamari, shrimp and scallops, etc. They were not bad, but nothing exceptional for restaurant in this class. I would give it a 4.5 star, but rounding down due to the seating I had.
Be the first to ReplyThe restaurant was beautiful, service was great.
The food, however, was not as good as I had expected it to be for the price. The tuna tartare was overly tart. The red snapper fillet was small and not fresh because I had to add lemon to take away the fishiness. The lasagna was good, the gnocchi and penne was ok but not worth the price. The osso buco was dry and lacks taste. However, I loved the zucchini blossoms, they were great. The desserts were ok. For the price, my expectations were higher.

My wife wanted Italian for dinner so we searched out a place and visited Carisma. Everything and I mean everything was excellent. The service was extraordinary and the food was divine. The place was full with lots of groups but my wife and I were attended to just as well as the larger tables. The drinks were excellent as well. Our table was at the front of the restaurant which gave us a front and center view of all the action. Everything was clean and orderly and not loud at all even with a full restaurant. In the midst of eating though I watched the staff which is just something I do sometimes in restaurants. These folks run like a well oiled machine. Everyone watches over the diners and while you are never hounded with "is everything okay?" You will feel that folks are watching over you and if you need anything you are just a glance or raised hand away from anything you want. If you are looking for a wonderful dining experience I would tell you go to Carisma.

I arrived earlier this evening with the intent of meeting a friend for dinner and drinks. This following Cancer surgery which resulted in a broad 5cm X 1cm scabbing scar on my right cheek. The woman who seated me commented " What happened to your face...it looks terrible". I honestly and embarrassingly responded..."It's Cancer" ....as other diners looked upon me. I had hoped dinner at Carisma would be an enjoyable break from a frightening two weeks - post surgery - as I await a CT Scan to examine whether or not the CANCER has spread to my neck lymph nodes. Moments later, a male approached me and asked me to leave stating " We don't need your type here...I pay more than $30,000 rent per month...leave now." I quietly exited Carisma...with a deep feeling of shame, anxiety and public embarrassment.

After not having been to Carisma in over five years, I was excited to take a client there for lunch. Lovely to see the owner Mike again after all these years. The seating offers attractive banquettes and comfortable tables. I was quite surprised to see that the menu is almost exactly as it was five years ago and hasn't really changed. I did enjoy the beef carpaccio. It was fresh & flavourable and the olive oil was good. Also, the bread is as delicious as I remember. However, I must say that the ravioli was bland and more than al dente. The tomatoes were mostly just skin which made for an unpleasant bite. I can't remember the last time I had to put salt on a meal (many places over-salt theses days) but it was necessary here. I hope they were just having an off day.

Excellent Italian with great service! Went here with a colleague and had an excellent meal. Great upscale ambiance with attentive waitstaff that make good suggestions. Owner/hosts are friendly and helpful. Had the pear cocktail and it was fantastic. For starters had the polipo (good) and carpaccio (good). On the advice of the waiter also had the lamb chops and they were among the best I had. The bread that comes at the start was fantastic. Warm, olive oiled, toasted deliciousness. This will be one of my go to restaurants.
