Camphor Los Angeles Reviews from The Last Year
We so looked forward to our dinner.
The place is quite lovely, but loud. I had requested a corner table and was given a table in the middle of the room. The Dover Sole and the Ribeye were great but all the appetizers were overly seasoned and had too much going on (i.e. the sardines were like dried crickets covered in some strange and strong powder). The sommelier was wonderful and offered us a digestif after dinner. It was never served. When I asked to see him after 20 minutes waiting for our drinks, we were told he was gone and that the bar was closed. After spending close to $2,000 for a party of 4, it is appalling that the manager on duty refused to serve us the drinks we were offered and closed the bar on us at 11pm. The staff couldn't wait to get out of there. We won't be back. Totally overrated.
This was one of the most disappointing meals I've had.
There are some positives. The space is amazing, the sommelier was great and the premium wine pairing had some interesting picks Unfortunately, the food is forgettable. My wife and I had 4 courses: onion tartine, radicchio, mushroom rice and the chicken. Hands down the best thing we ate was the side of pomme frites. We skipped dessert because I was pretty sure it would be average. The service is underwhelming. Our waiter was very rushed during the first part of the meal, and then he ghosted us somewhere between the 3rd and 4th course. He actually left for the evening with no hand-off to another server, no thank you for coming, nothing. Camphor would make an excellent wine bar with small plates, but for a fine-dining experience, I would recommend going somewhere else.

The food is amazing! Sea bream, Scallops, Steak and the Kiwi are so good! We went there after playing golf. Very hungry and first time to try this restaurant. Feel like even better than the Michelin star restaurants. Very creative and fresh.

I'm here in Denver visiting my parents and found this place due to my weird lavender obsession (literally googled lavender latte Denver and was amazed to find a whole lavender concept shop). It's sooooo stinking cute, calming, and just lovely! I wish a place like this existed in LA. I love that it's more than a cafe, with holistic products, and their cafe menu is really unique. Love the idea of the "Coffee Date" which, for $18, gives you a whole french press to share, some cinnamon creamer on the side, and lavender cookies on a pretty tray. A cafe that encourages you to linger. Open a shop in LA please!
Great food, great service, great ambiance, amazing staff!
Great food, great service, great ambiance, amazing staff! Always delivers, consistent with food, service and ambiance. Bread is a filler but its soo good it is a must. A refreshing amuse bouche to start, Radicchio Salad, Steak au poivre, Chicken (my FAVORITE, its stuffed with more goodness), side of lentil & lamb (not what you think, a wonderful surprise), all washed down with whatever Rick - the somm recommends, just go with it!!!

First time here, and I already want to go back.
The ambiance is welcoming and upscale, but not too upscale that you feel under or over dressed for any type of date night. The staff is well Informed, very attentive, and also very kind. The food was the icing on the cake for this place. Went here for a valentine's date on Super Bowl Sunday, so they weren't too busy early on, and everything about the place was phenomenal. The entrees, the main courses, desert, everything was full of flavor, pleasant, and made you want more with each bite despite some of them being a little adventurous. The sea bream uni dish for example was a complex but well balanced seafood shaved ice dish that you can't get enough of, and the short rib bourguignon was worth the pre order and was so decadent and delicious. We wanted more despite being full. Will certainly come back for more. One complaint was if you get there too early and park yourself, the valet still charge you even if you're parked literally next to the entrance.

Intrigued by the recent attention that Camphor has been getting so as usual I don't make any reservations and I just decide show up and sit at the bar when I realize I've been here before. Many years ago when I heard about the burger, so I Immediately find a seat and immediately realize they have the same uncomfortable stools from the first visit that are too tall for even me and I'm 6'1, but I'm excited to revisit. Anyways Camphor is one of these places located in a mysterious dark alley with old curved spotlight lamps hanging from the brick buildings, it's like a scene in one of those old 1950's black and white movies which I like by the way because I don't like going to dinner in a strip mall when I'm in the mood for a high end dining experience. It's getting late so Immediately place my order and the servers offer me a complimentary snack as I wait for my wine. The Servers are extremely professional and kind and I immediately recognize one of the servers from my first visit which says a lot, very pretty btw. The burger was exquisite, the wine was marvelous and the pomme fritte were crispy. I'll be back again to try the menu! Au Revoir!

Came to Camphor to celebrate my birthday and enjoyed it so
Came to Camphor to celebrate my birthday and enjoyed it so much! I made reservations in advance to ensure we could sit at the chef's counter and watch the kitchen. We ordered the tartare, radicchio salad and the burger. Le burger is not just a burger. House made brioche bun, 200g of Wagyu brisket, chuck, and short rib mixed with duck, caramelized onions, Gouda and rémoulade. Decadent and delicious. I came in with a plan to order this and shared with my husband. Fantastic experience and service.
Sat at the bar/chef's counter.
It was easy to get a last minute reservation. The amuse was a nice little bite. The seam bream appetizer was delicious and my favorite dish of the night for sure. It felt healthy and each bite was balanced and delicious. The burger was very good. Service was excellent.
I felt this is a highly overrated restaurant.
The food is somewhat unique (at least the way it was described) but far from being great. The service was very, very slow. The waiter oversold the dishes and so when we got to eat them they were a disappointment. Ambiance is OK. Not too different from most hip DTLA restaurants. Considering the above, the dishes were totally over priced.
Any modern take on classic dishes was not very good.
Everyone can get away with it . Other dishes where excellent. Desserts excellent. Service was good. Space is nice.
Great dinner, beautiful atmosphere, and outstanding
Great dinner, beautiful atmosphere, and outstanding service! They do have valet, we got street parking but that can be difficult in this area. Drinks: Latin Quarter - my husband thought it was delicious. Like a margarita meets a whisky sour. La Chapelle - my husband also really liked this one. St. Tropez - I ordered this non-alcoholic drink and it was delicious. Not too bitter, which I sometimes feel about drinks with aperol. Food: I'm a vegetarian and my husband is not, so they were able to make some suggestions and accommodations for me which was very helpful. Bread & butter - this was delicious. The butter is mixed with some sort of cheese, it had a sharp cheese flavor to it which I loved, and it paired so well with the honey. Onion Tartine - this was my favorite dish! Soooo good. It comes with a duck broth, but they brought that on the side so I could eat it without the broth. You have to order this if coming here! Burger & Fries - my husband loved this. The cook was a perfect medium rare, how he ordered it. The bun was brushed with duck fat, and the caramelized onions were delicious. The fries were also cooked really well and came with 3 different sauces (ketchup, spicy aioli, and honey mustard). The mushroom dish - this was the vegetarian entree option. It came on top of rice and with a red wine Marsala sauce. It was very good! Potatoes - this was mashed potatoes with herbs, it comes with a demiglasse but they brought that on the side for us since that was not vegetarian. This was also good, though I'd probably skip next time just to save space. Seasonal vegetables - this was smoked asparagus with a bernaise sauce. The asparagus was cooked to perfection! Marzipan - we finished with this dessert, it was a marzipan ice cream encased in lemon shaved iced. Really delicious and super refreshing. Overall, I highly recommend coming here. It felt like fine dining, and they were super accommodating, kind, and answered any questions we had.
My Fav's French Bistro @ L.
A. Amuse-Bouche (Complimentary) , Tartare "Beef & Herb Tempura" , Scallop "Demi Lune" , Ribeye "Maître D' Butter". Sooo Much Enjoyable.
Excellent French restaurant in DTLA.
Everything was very good, just extremely pricey and could've been slightly better to justify. The best - Scallop pasta Beef tartare with tempura Onion tart Beef bourlogion Just fine (especially with price) The chicken Dover sole The desserts
Camphor is a wonderful spot and after a phenomenal meal
Camphor is a wonderful spot and after a phenomenal meal with friends it definitely earned that Michelin star. They have a fantastic wine list and we ordered a few stellar wines. The space is beautiful and relaxed - not very different from when it was Nightshade. The service was impeccable from the second I walked into the space until we left, full but happy. I had my favorites, including the sea bream, clams, spinach vadouvan (similar to a saag preparation), the scallop pasta dish, bread with the epoisses butter and the oysters are not to be missed. But across the board, the drinks, food and experience was excellent, highly recommend.
Loved the decor.
It was clean, streamlined, and chic. I was a bit worried that it might get loud with the pretty high ceiling, but it wasn't too bad. Even the menu was beautiful. We ordered Opera and Le Marais to start, and they were both delicious. We loved the pommes frites and scallop. I don't think I've ever enjoyed ravioli as much before. It was so delicate yet creamy, perfectly showcasing the texture and taste of scallops. The short rib bourguignon was a bit of a disappointment. The gnocchi that accompanied the dish had quite a mushy and unpleasant texture and not much flavor. I did not enjoy it at all. Additionally, the short rib felt a bit overcooked and had a bit too much fat on them. The Kiwi mint dessert was another thing that we did not fully love. The first impression was refreshing and pleasant, but the more I had it, the more it tasted like soap. It was a bit bizarre. Service was awesome. But to be honest, I really didn't appreciate the 3.5% charge on the credit card use - this is not some cheap grab-and-go spot where I might have enough cash to cover. Also, it's one of my little pet peeves when the restaurant's suggested tip is calculated after tax. I know, it's not much. I'm not so concerned about giving a few extra dollars for the tip, but technically I shouldn't have to pay a tip on the tax. It really makes me not want to be more generous.
Camphor was a really good experience all around.
Food, ambiance, service & wine were all great! I had a lot of anticipation since it was a Michelin star restaurant. And I really enjoyed myself. My favorite was the French Onion Tartine. Rich & flavorful, it truly has that "French" appeal. I was very happy with the service, too. They were attentive, but did not rush us. And their pacing of the meal was very good. Sometimes restaurants move a bit too quickly. Camphor was just right. Our party was there for about 3 hours and it felt it went by quick! To me, an enjoyable dinner like this would be between 2-3 hours, closer to the 3 hour mark. I received a text a few days prior asking if we'd like to pre-order any of their specialties. Apparently they run out sometimes. But I don't know if that's true or not. Nonetheless, we chose to pre-order the Dover Sole, Beef Bourguignon & chicken. All three were very good. I asked the server to round out the meal for our party of six, and he nailed the suggestions, including the quantity. We ate everything and were satisfied but not stuffed. Perfect amount of food! Overall, it was a wonderful evening with family at a wonderful place. The ONLY knock would be price. Despite my favorable review, this place is pricey compared to other nice restaurants in the Arts District. Even with its Michelin Star, I feel it could be priced a bit lower. And if it was, perhaps I'd rate it higher. But in today's environment, I do give them credit for how they charge. They do not have any added fees for "better benefits" or "rising labor costs", etc. it's a straight up bill and you can tip as you see fit. They even emphasize that any gratuity goes all to the staff. Bi appreciate that! Just beware that they do pass through a 3.5% fee if you use a credit card. We knew that ahead of time and brought cash! It saved me about $25!! See pics for what we ordered. All were really good. Just wished pricing was a bit more reasonable and it likely would have been a 5 star rating.

We had such an amazing dinner at Camphor, and I love the fact that you can choose from an actual menu unlike many fellow Michelin starred restaurants that employ a fixed/tasting menu. The food was just absolutely amazing, and the service was prompt, friendly, and attentive. We started with oysters and a radicchio salad (kind of like a caesar salad?) followed by the clams with garlic and parsley. We also ordered the scallop demi lune and the steak au poivre (filet mignon) with a side of pomme frites. Everything was super delicious but I think my favorites were the clams and the steak au poivre with the pomme frites. The steak was just done so perfectly and I think pomme frites were the best "fries" I've had in a while. They have a great selection of wines and instead of going with the wine pairing option, we decided to just order glasses individually with recommendations from the server all of which we really enjoyed. Overall it was just a great experience, and I can see myself come here again and again in the future!

Great Service - amazing dinner!!
Read about the site in NYT and bought a reservation at Mother Wolf in LA 2 days later. Worked great and the food was amazing!!!
Worked perfectly!
Got the reservation (that I couldn't get anywhere else) and was able to entertain a group of friends at the infamous Bern's Steakhouse.
Got into Nobu Malibu
Wonderful! My parents are visiting and we have wanted to go to Nobu Malibu for years. I tried getting a reservation myself but it was next to impossible. So glad I was able to buy a reservation on appointment trader for a decent price!
Very easy
Was very hesitant going into this experience but am glad to say that it worked out very well ! will definitely use appointment trader in the future
Fabulous Lunch
I was veeeeeerry skeptical that this would work, particularly at a restaurant as hard to get into as Nobu Malibu, and it was perfect! We had lunch outside on the patio and it was fabulous!
Great reviewer team
Just wanted to take a second to shout out the reviewer team. Even though they probably review hundreds of listings and bids a day, they still take the time to leave great comments and respond relatively quickly. Thanks!
Incredible
I got a reservation to Don Angie, which I've been trying to book for weeks! I am very happy with this service.
Best platform out there!
Super simple, easy, and fast to secure reservations for hard-to-get restaurants and locations!

Worked well, got me into a restaurant with no availability
I was skeptical, and I still don't really know how they managed to find this hard-to-find reservation, but it was a win-win from my point of view, and I'll use this service again.
Last minute reservation for Delilah Las Vegas
Got a last minute reservation, dinner for 2 at Delilah Las Vegas: super impressed! The process was simple, transaction seamless. We had an amazing time! Couldn’t be happier! 😍
It works!
Ok at this point I've attended a reservation purchased on AT by a friend and sold a reservation personally. Both worked pretty smoothly, nothing sketchy about it. A few areas for improvement including a way to more directly communicate between buyers and sellers, but the app always seems to be in development. AT customer support is really(!) responsive and helpful too if you have questions!
Money transfer
As a seller, I like the fact i have the ability now to transfer money out of my AT account and into a bank account. Makes getting the money much easier then the process before.
Love this app
Got to go to places otherwise unreachable
Easy Access
Very easy to get into one of the hardest restaurants to reserve in New York.
Whose name will my reservation be under when I arrive at the venue?
It can be under your name or a name you choose! Some reservation offers already include the AppointmentTrader Transfer Service which will transfer the reservation in to your name. If its not included you can add it on after buying the reservation for a small fee. One thing on that though: As many reservations become available at last minute, taking a reservation in someone else name is quick and great for privacy. Most reservations on AT are listed with a virtual phone number, so all you need to do is present the phone number at the hostess stand and you are good to go!
Payouts Blocked Because of Sell Through Rate
Does anyone know how AT plans to handle cases where a seller is quitting the platform but has a sell through rate <25%? The error message I got said to fill more bids or find other ways to increase the rate.
Is AT really going to block sellers from withdrawing their money? Especially revenue made before the sell through rate was introduced??

I will give you 50% of ALL of my PROFITS if you teach me how to make profits?
LOL. Thank you The New Yorker.
Appointment
Transferring reservations is not supported in AT. Why not just use the name in the AT screenshot?
Buyers interested in Bern's Steakhouse: PLEASE READ
Same goes for 4 Charles and I Sodi
Prepaid Reservation Fee
Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.
Congrats on 3 mil

Need to cancel a bid, not getting a response… how do I do it?
Click on "Take off the Market Option" in your portfolio
Working on your bid?
Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.
Process after bid is accepted.
Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
Where do the Reservations on AppointmentTrader come from?
Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.
What happens if my bid expires unanswered?
Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
