Nice service but the food was average.
This is my regular spot for business lunches which have always been great. Dinner on a Saturday night was a bit of a different story. We arrived at 5.55 and were told we would be seated in a mere moment. The host returned and told us he had made a mistake and we would be looking at a 40 minute wait. 50 minutes later they decided to open up upstairs seating and we were seated. Service from them on was great but the food was decidedly average. Crayfish starter was cold and the Cray was tough. Crispy Pork starter was hard and tough, not crispy. Lamb shank was the cheaper fore shank, not what one would expect for the price point. Duck was lovely but lukewarm and was not a cohesive dish. We decided not to stay for pud, underwhelming.
Be the first to Replywhat a lovely Restaurant. The locals know it, but me coming from the south island, it was a real treat.
what a wonderful Restaurant. The staff are all exceptional, we had the delightful Sama serve us, , and her knowledge of food as well as her friendly nature assisted our dining experience. The food had plenty of variety from entrees through the mains through to lovely desserts. A real credit, and a delight to discover it being a South Islander.
Be the first to ReplyDining Delight to satisfy the taste buds
Housed in a beautiful gothic house squashed between hotels and office buildings. They run and tight ship. They are highly efficient, helpful and offer interesting food. We chose the Fish of the Day and the Duck Confit. Both were cooked perfectly and had interesting accompaniments, we finished with a cheese platter and Apple Tatin and ice cream. Could not fault anything. Would highly recommend.
Be the first to ReplyNOTHING was right, having us wait standing in a tiny bar, noise level is ridiculous, etc
How greedy are you that you won't take dinner reservations after 5 and then you will only give you a slot if you stand endlessly in their minuscule bar for over an hour. You cannot even go outside and still be "on the list". We are over 70 and found standing for an hour tedious. The graciousness is all talk, no one found us a chair. The noise was so bad we could not even make incidental conversation in the bar or at our table when we were finally seated. Our waiter was clearly new and served improperly and chaotically. One of my guests was so infuriated, she wouldn't speak to me the rest of the evening. It was supposed to be a special dinner. French onion soup was very poor quality and I could have cooked a better meal at home a lot cheaper. Save yourself from the inflated reviews.
Be the first to ReplyMust try harder, obviously a kitchen in the weeds
We had booked for a family celebration, and left before dessert was offered. Entrees were good and served promptly, then it took a took for the worse. Mains took forever to arrive, for some reason bread for the table arrived with the main course, fries for the steak arrived after the main was finished and the fish was totally overcooked. Had really hoped for more, but alas we left without ordering dessert and with a very overwhelming price tag to boot. A definite must try harder, but alas we will never return to find out if you do.
Be the first to ReplyGreat place, service, wine and food.
Absolutely brilliant. Lovely location, great service from Jono and Sam, excellent wine list and good food. The best service and food we had in 2 weeks in NZ. Clive and Paivi.
Be the first to ReplyGood luck getting served!
No one answers the phone...upon arrival, on a Friday at 2pm, when lunch and dinner are purportedly served, we were told the kitchen was closed. They claimed to be open from 12-9 on Friday. Good luck if you try your plans around this place.
Be the first to ReplyLovely hidden gem.
Went here for an early dinner - you can only booked up until 1800 and after that is a walk-in. Suggest go for an early dinner as quite a few people waiting when we left , albeit bar is a neat place to hang out whilst waiting for a table. Staff very good, attentive without being over zealous, let us eat at our own pace; food fabulous - I had French onion soup and pork loin both of which delicious, and my wife had burrata and heritage tomato and rack of lamb, the latter of which was spectacular. Did. It make it to desert. An added plus, Monday night Champagne is half price. Definitely worth a visit.
Be the first to ReplyDelightful Treat
Delightful and delectable dinner. We enjoyed the local vibe and wonderful service. Our entree we started with the French onion soup and caprese salad with our main with local grilled lamb chops and the local white fish of the day. Boulcott was recommended by two local women whom we met at the wharf and told us to make a reservation - glad we did.

We had dinner at this lovely bistro on New Year's Eve. Delicious meal, excellent service and great atmosphere. Loved it!
Be the first to ReplyBest restaurant in Wellington
This is my favourite restaurant of all time!
The service is always amazing, as soon as you walk in the door you feel like you’re at home!
We regularly eat here and the staff are friendly and always make us feel special.
The food / wine never disappoints
Pleasant evening
We have wanted to visit this restaurant for a while, but thwarted by lockdown! Glad to have made it finally! Excellent service. Lamb was ordered medium rare, and arrived a little too pink! However, no fuss, it got a quick flash in a pan and was perfect. Everything was perfectly done, and very tasty.
Be the first to ReplyFood is usually very good standard
I have eaten at the Boulcott Bistro a number of times and they food has always been very good and upto standard. On my last visit I felt my meal was not as good. The lamb was very pink although I had asked for well done. The potatoes that came with the meal were tasteless and no flavour at all. The service was excellent. Felt my meal was overpriced for what I got. Won't be back I don't think
Be the first to ReplyBirthday Dinner
Went here for dinner with some family for my 23rd birthday. Food was amazing, beautiful wine and great service. This was my first time but definitely won’t be my last. Thank you to everyone for such a special night!
Be the first to ReplyNot a good steak
The most boring TBone steak I have ever had. Requested rare, was told it would come medium rare and came medium, tough, dry and tasteless.
Admittedly it was on special but thats not why I chose it. There was an option of a couple if sauces. I chose neither as I dont believe in ruining a good steak with anything. Sadly it wasn’t a good steak.
The Boulcott Bistro is of
The Boulcott Bistro is of my favourites, great staff and nicely prepared food with a great wine list.
Yesterday was let down where a trio of tradies wearing hiviz vests and caps dined close by. One was not interested and spent most of his time playing on his phone. Suggest dress code and by the way I am a tradie.
trading on past glories?
This restaurant had been hyped by so many locals I was very excited to dine there last night. It was perfectly adequate, but I left feeling like it had not lived up to my expectations.
My friend had booked more than two weeks ahead and asked for a special table as it was our shared birthday celebration. The table was jammed against a wall, no view or special touches. My friend asked if the ravioli had egg (my friend is vegan), the server very condescendingly said 'It's pasta, it obviously has egg!' . My friend who is both Italian, and a passionate home cook, begged to differ.
I chose pumpkin ravioli with sage butter. It was $39. When it arrived there were exactly six pieces of ravioli on the plate. It was perfectly ok, but nothing to write home about. At $6.50 per mouthful, I expect to be surprised and pleased.
As we found it hard to hear each other, I asked if they could change the music (90s pop) to something more mellow. Our server raised an eyebrow and told me firmly 'This is our dinner playlist.'
A birthday cake was produced. The cake itself, a good dark chocolate cake, was overwhelmed by extremely dense and thick buttercream. The kind of density you only get after a few days in the fridge...? This impression was borne out by the very soggy strawberries and garnish of plain pear slices pressed against the sides of the cake. Whatever Chef thought they were adding, it wasn't flavour.
It's a charming wee building, but in terms of service and food, Boulcott Street Bistro is trading on its reputation.
poor experience for one of Wellington best
Wanted a lovely meal out and have previously enjoyed the Boulcott St Bistro. Some of the poor experience is our own fault. We didn't realise you could book for the pre 6pm sitting. We arrived at 5.45 pm, to be told they were full but could have a drink at the bar until a table became free at 7.30- we should have walked. The few seats in the bar were all taken, we had driven so weren't intending to drink much- an hour and threequarters is a long time to make a drink last. The food was very average, cold tasteless Tiger prawns. Lovely market fish served with 2 baby potatoes and 2 clams! Sides hugely unimaginative. Very disappointing experience.
Be the first to ReplySunday Roast
Wonderful setting and ambiance, perfect to celebrate any occasion. We had the Sunday roast, which over all was good value. Lamb Sunday roast , a glass of pinot and a bread and butter pudding. These options can vary. The roast was very tasty, I wish the roast potatoes were more crispy but overall very tasty. Service was lovely and beautiful cocktails after.
We will be back.
TERRIBLE
Understated
The Sunday roast special was terrible.
The pork was dry, the crackling did crackle..it was chewy.
The figgy dessert was mass produced and not good,
for the huge price tag..TERRIBLE
