I've been coming to this restaurant for the last 10 years with enjoyable experiences.... tonight was an attempt to counter all the history... in a single night.
Got there for my birthday dinner around 7:30, well aware that the restaurant closes at 9pm.
Got seated, drinks served, bread served- all meeting the usual expectations....
Appetizers arrived, they were tasteful, but cool to the touch- bang bang shrimp and the wagyu potstickers... not a deal breaker.
My mother ordered the Salmon Caprese, which was properly cooked and up to temp- though I'd say "bed" of fondue since it was hidden under the fish... still it was tasty.
I ordered the Cioppino, which was a first. Dish came out and looked appetizing- however the temp of the dish ranged from lukewarm to flat out cold. I flagged the nearest waiter since mine was across the restaurant setting up tables. He was professional and apologetic about it. He promptly took the dish back to the kitchen. So far so good... even with the hiccup.
Several minutes later, what I presume to be the manager, came back with my dish.... not a new dish... the exact same dish. She proceeds to tell me the cooks threw it back in the pan and warmed it up. They make it in large batches and then freeze it.... so this one wasn't cooked long enough. That was the extent of the apology.....
Our waitress returned later to clear some plates, apparently completely unaware of the returned dish. She drops the bill on the table without a comment....
Having worked in service industry for the past 15 years... here's a few suggestions:
1. Serve food at proper temps- make sure your manager's are Service Safe qualified- from tonight's behaviour I highly question it....
2. Never give a dish back to a customer... make a new dish... even if that means you have to "thaw" out another batch..... Even writing that just ruins my impression of the restaurant...
3. If you're actually going to give it back anyway- offer a discount if unwilling to do #2. I really don't think this was the experience that should have paid a hundred bucks for.
I understand that your staff leaving promptly at 9pm is the priority on a Sunday night... and I will never come back to that time of the week. Lesson learned. Friday and Saturday experiences were typically superb.
4. Do not have your cooks catcall "Warmer? Oh, I'll make it warmer... repeatedly... and loud enough I could hear over his music.
5. That's right, I said his music, your kitchen staff were loud enough that there was no ambience at the table I was at.... and I could either choose to listen to the restaurant music or their radio station.... at least I had options.
Don't worry, I will send a copy to customer service email....
