Sunday happy hour
This is one of the few restaurants in DC that has a happy hour from 4-6 pm even on a Sunday. Menu's not extensive and prices although lower than the regular menu versions are still about the same as other less expensive restaurants. Food quality however is consistently delicious and presentations is good. We had fish tacos, tuna flatbread, and crab cakes and 2 beers at $6 and $7. About $90 for two people before tip. Only thing that made this a 4 star rating is they charge a fee if you use a credit card - surprising for a restaurant of this calibre to do this as it is a practice not usually seen in the US and even overseas for the last few years.
Be the first to ReplyA reliably excellent seafood restaurant
We can always count on BlackSalt for an excellent meal. They have a wide variety of fish courses, including grilled fresh sardines (my favorite) and spectacular scallops. It's so hard to choose among their mouthwatering offerings that I often have two appetizers instead of an entrรฉe, so I can have more variety. The service is impeccable, the ambiance promotes conversation, and the cocktails and wine list are fine also. A very dependable restaurant that also has new menu items every time we come.
Be the first to ReplyStill good food but overpriced
The food is still really good but the place has massively increased its prices to a level that is not justified by ambience (crowded, loud, sticky tables without tablecloth) and service (understaffed, manager didnโt know the difference between Sauvignon blanc and Veltliner). The 4% surcharge on any card payment (credit or debit) is outrageous. Black Salt has sadly become greedy.

A neighborhood gem. The food and service were impeccable! 5+ Stars. Our Server allowed us to choose our entrees from their impressive Market. The Chef prepared a perfect accompaniment with the Bluefish and John Dory. Service was knowledgeable and genuine. Excellent wine selection for all tastes. The next time we are in town, we will head straight to BlackSalt
Be the first to ReplyDelicious dinner - great service
This was our first time here and we will definitely be back. Food was so good! We had a reservation for 5:00 and were able to order food from the regular menu as well as from the happy hour menu (till 6:00). Will was our waiter and he was great. We enjoyed every dish we ordered but the oyster Rockefeller, calamari, clam chowder and seafood stew stood out. We were there for over two hours and it was such an enjoyable experience.

Good food, good service, but 4% added to bill for paying with card (credit or debit). Discourage this! Eat somewhere else.
Be the first to ReplySuperb seafood place
Always dependable fresh fish. Lunch has similar menu to dinner so choice is quite extensive Service is efficient as well as courteous Recommend booking a table in advance
Be the first to ReplyGreat seafood place
Fantastic seafood and amazing service. Everything raw was super fresh and all the dishes were immaculately prepared. Will definitely visit again!
Be the first to ReplyAmazing seafood experience
I really like the seafood market and restaurant concept. I enjoyed seeing the fresh seafood in the market when you come into the restaurant. The service here is impeccable, it's friendly but not overbearing for a fine dining experience. I have friends in the neighborhood who have also raved about the takeout being done really well. We went for dinner, it was one of our first dine-in experiences for a while so we had high expectations to say the least. They also have a bar menu if you want to eat there. My husband and I started with the raw oysters of course, which were fresh and delicious. I had the clam chowder that was creamy and rich with lots of seafood. The crab cakes were delicious with lots of lump crab meat and the sauce was flavorful.
Be the first to ReplyGood food abysmal service
I have been dining at Black Salt since they opened. Good times and bad. Food and service declined markedly in 2010-2015. Great improvement 2018-2021. The last several visits in 2022 have been unfortunate. The food is ok, not quite up to the pricing, but close. I have found the service just awful for a restaurant in this class. I am not price sensitive, and I am happy to pay $25 for a $10 hamburger if the service is better than a hamburger chain. Today at Black Salt in a nearly empty setting I repeatedly had to get up from the table to wander around looking for staff to bring water, menus, condiments and finally the bill. I left a 10% tip for the first time in a decade or more. My guest was astonished at the difference between reputation as a good restaurant and the performance. Last visit after at least 15 years and $thousands spent at this place.

Definitely lived up to the reviews! In fact exceeded my expectations. Started with a dozen of their oysters. Mixed and matched west coast and east coast. Server was highly knowledgeable on both the wine and food choices. Highly recommend the grilled octopus, mussels and whatever market fish the server recommends. The desserts hit the spot at the end!
Be the first to ReplyHigh-end/fine dining restaurant?
Several days ago, I stopped by the restaurant to purchase a gift card. As I entered, and after waiting for a few minutes, there was no one that could assist. Next to a register, I noticed two employees chatting away. I approached them and again waited several minutes for them to finish their discussion. They completely ignored me and eventually walked away. When another staff member finally came over and found out that I wanted to purchase a gift card, he went to find a manager to handle the transaction. I was pretty surprise that the manager who came to assist me was one of the two people that previously ignored me. For a restaurant that considers itself to be on par with high-end/fine dining, management has a long way to go to meet these standards.

Highest quality food and service. Top notch seafood. Best in the city. Oysters are a must and ask your Server for the fresh catch suggestion
Be the first to ReplySpectacular dinner
Excellent sashimi appetizer, better Nova Scotia halibut. The service was very good, friendly, informative and prompt. The restaurant did not have WiFi, and the manager JJ graciously arranged an uber drive. That kind of service is really special.
Be the first to ReplyOverpriced
Overpriced or under-quality, whichever you prefer. I came here for a birthday celebration with husband and grown children, on the expectation of โthe place is amazing.โ However, both the food and service were only ok. I will not return
Be the first to ReplyOnly amazing
We go here only when we want amazing seafood prepared with care. Their fried Ipswich Clams and Ora King Salmon Poke are phenomenal as are their mussels and other fish specialties. The staff is gentle and attentive without being simpering. Additionally, when I am cooking at home, this is my fishmarket. So grateful they are nearby!
Be the first to ReplyReally good.
Forget the "name only" establishments. BlackSalt offers fresh fish and see-food, prepared with fresh ingredients. Very attentive service. A must visit.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent
Super nice environment. Lot of variety of food and a very mature crowd hangs out here. I will definitely be coming back. Great location
Be the first to ReplySuperb from start to finish!
I've been to BlackSalt a few times and finally decided I should leave a review this time! I went to dinner with my dad and grandfather in February 2022. First, I was happy with their COVID safety measures - checking IDs and vaccine cards, all staff wearing masks, etc. so we felt comfortable going out. All of the staff were very friendly and accommodating. And the food was absolutely delicious. I loved everything about my meal. Delicious lentil and goat cheese salad with beets, followed by excellent crab cakes. And the chocolate peanut butter torte was delightful. Now, it is definitely on the pricier side of things so perhaps a special occasion-only kind of place depending on your budget, but it is worth the trip. We always have a great experience here! Oh, and I just noticed this evening that their booths have outlets and coat racks, which is a nice touch. Anyway, I definitely recommend it!
Be the first to ReplyExquisite food
Excellent service and excellent food, what is there to say?
We had a couple of starters to share, both were excellent, I had the clam chowder which was like no other I ever had, airy and tasty, and a Japanese style seafood stew which was rather like a ramen and fabulous
Not really an inexpensive dining, but worth the price
So disappointing
We ordered the crabcake sandwich at a pricy cost. The crab cake was tasteless becuase most of it was filler. It came with a side of cheap salty chips. The lobster appetizer was served with cabbage - combination does not work. Not returnining.
Be the first to ReplyBoring menu
My friend and her husband took me to this supposedly wonderful restaurant. I have not really been to an American restaurant in ages so I was excited.
We ordered addies blue shell mussels which was the best thing I had there. The Belgian mussel was so salty that we had to return it. I had the Provenรงal seafood stew which to me was bland. The seafood was fresh though. I got to taste the crab cakes but Iโve had many others that were much better. I did not see a single lump of crab. The ahi tuna was just as boring. We had the chocolate cake for dessert it was not spectacular either. Service was professional but no warmth. The wine we had was excellent. It was a Sancerre. As my friend said what a boring menu. We shall never return!!! It was also overpriced.
Delicious seafood - professionally served !
My wife and I tried this place for the first time and we will be back . Zac our server was terrific and he gave us quite the tutorial on oysters . We followed his recommendations and our selections were delicious . My wife has a gluten allergy and they went out of their way to accommodate her dinner substitutions . Both our fish meals were cooked to perfection . Highly recommend !
Be the first to ReplyFantastic Halibut
This was my first visit and Black Salt met most of my high expectations. I did not have an appetizer, but my friends said the oysters were excellent. The last time I had halibut this good, I was in Alaska. This is a rather expensive restaurant. The average lunch entrรฉe must have been around $50. Surprisingly, the wine list was much more reasonable. We had a delicious bottle of Pouilly Fume (#122) which did not cost much more than my entrรฉe. Considering the restaurant was not overly crowded, service was a bit slow. Our waitress was pleasant but rather Spartan in her verbal interactions. Overall, we were impressed.
Be the first to ReplyHands down DCโs best seafood
I come to Black Salt every time I visit DC. It is my favorite seafood restaurant anywhere. Everything is so fresh and special. Since seafood is my favorite I went to the new Trip Advisor number one seafood restaurant. The food was good but it didnโt measure up in my opinion to Black Salt. Come on Trip Advisor junkies, get it right! Black Salt is the best seafood restaurant in DC and comparable to the best in the World.
