I think I'm done with this place.
Whereas the food continues to be very good, the service, attitude and policies of the restaurant are in free-fall. After making reservations online (no other method is allowed), I received a request to keep our dinner to less than 90 minutes. I doubt that I've ever passed the 90 minute threshold, so I didn't at it much mind. I didn't consider how that time stamp would be enforced, however. The food was excellent, but seemed fairly dialed back. Here's a red flag: want to start with bread? Separate line item. You'll be paying for that. Want a refill on your iced tea? Sorry, your glass has been promptly removed after you finished. I've been coming to this restaurant for many years, and have enjoyed countless wonderful meals here. However, in recent months, I have been noticing a steady decline in the experience. From the bum's rush level of service to the hostess clomping around in overalls (!), Bistro Campagne is no longer even trying. There are too many great restaurants in Chicago to put up with whatever it is this restaurant is trying to become. Thanks for the memories.

Have been wanting to try out Bistro Campagne for a few months now and was able to finally try it during Chicago Restaurant Week 2024. For the menu it was actually a very well priced deal on CRW. Large amount of food with delicious flavors and high quality ingredients. So much to the point that we took half of our main courses home and they kept very well in the fridge for the next day. Lovely restaurant and cute atmosphere. Felt like we were back in France.
Be the first to ReplyThis review is for my visit on Saturday, 10 February.
This review is to express my disappointment with the service experience I encountered. Upon arriving promptly at 5:30 PM with the intention of placing a takeout order, I was informed by the host that takeout service was unavailable on Saturdays and Sundays, a policy which I was unaware of as it was not indicated on your website. The host also mentioned the chef was new, so the kitchen wouldn't have the capacity to package my food. That makes absolutely no sense. I'm sorry. It's nonsense. You have a takeout menu for a reason, no? While I understand that restaurants face operational challenges, the lack of clarity on your website regarding takeout availability compounded my frustration. The discrepancy between what was communicated by the host and what is stated on your online platform left me feeling disappointed and inconvenienced.

I recently dined at this restaurant and had a delightful experience overall. The ambiance was cozy, the service and drink selection impressive. The desserts were a highlight. However, I must mention that the mussels were a bit grainy and had an off taste. I appreciate the overall effort and would still recommend it as a nice dining experience.
Be the first to ReplyFirst time to this delightful and authentic French Bistro.
It's located in the southern part of Lincoln Square. Restaurant is deceptively large with plenty of seating. Decor is consistent with a French Bistro. The service was fast and attentive but not annoyingly so. Wine selection and cocktails were solid. The real story is the food. It was outstanding. Even the simple garden salad was a treat as ingredients were fresh and seasoned with a perfect vinaigrette. The mussel appetizer was plentiful and tasty. The steak fritte perfect. The Parisian gnocchis were delicious, as was the trout. While I don't indulge in desserts, my companions all did and raved about the bread pudding. Bottom-line, this is the real deal! First time but certainly not my last! I recommend this highly.
Be the first to ReplyOutstanding Restaurant Week experience.
Everything was terrific and the food was DELICIOUS. Great value too. You leave quite full! Can't wait to go back.

Wow this has to be one of my new favorite restaurants in Chicago! My friend and I went for restaurant week and loved everything we had (particularly the French onion soup, chicken entree, bread pudding, and crรจme brรปlรฉe). The staff were very warm and friendly. The decor and atmosphere makes you also feel like you aren't in the middle of Chicago, very cozy and beautiful artwork.

Yummy french food - savory sauces will make your mouth water for more. The Chicken dish is a must, the sweetest sauce & perfectly crispy onion rings. Gnocchi was seared just perfectly & pommes puree has a lovely taste of garlic. Great neighborhood spot with high quality food. Service & staff are great. Only downfall is if you have to sit near doors in the winter months.

Beautiful patio during the summer. Winter is cozy. Must get the dessert!

This was a nice little bistro on Lincoln Avenue, essentially a single-family dwelling refashioned into a restaurant. Very nice ambiance and decor, and looked much like a neighborhood French Bistro might look. There is an outdoor patio/garden for al fresco dining when the weather co-operates ... we couldn't sit there because of the cold, but it sure was attractive. We started out with drinks (all 4 and 5 star selections from their small but nicely curated wine list), and appetizers of the Cheese Plate (5 stars and a wonderful beginning of five cheeses to go with a small baguette) and Bread & Honey (5 stars although we probably didn't need the bread offering since the cheese plate came with some). This bistro is another dining establishment that has gone to a paid-for bread service where bread used to be pretty much free ... but that said, the bread was very nice. For mains our table of three had the Gnocchi Parisienne (a 2 star offering that took quite nice gnocchi and breaded them lightly ... the breading sort of ruining the whole point of soft pillows); Mussels (a 3 star offering that just wasn't the cleanest of mussels ... too much sand in many of the mussels making for a crunchy mouth feel); and the last had the Croque Madame (a 3 star entree that was nice but unremarkable). For dessert we shared a Pot De Creme (a 4 star serving of chocolate mousse with a nice dollop of flavored whipped cream on top) and a single scoop of sorbet (5 stars and some of the best sorbet we've had in years). All in all a nice evening on Lincoln Avenue. Didn't especially like their music list played in the background, but that is a small quibble. If we return we'll try the onion soup and fish offerings ... some of the more French offerings at the Bistro.
Be the first to ReplyBeautiful ambiance, quaint and makes you feel at home.
Great menu, everything sounded delicious. Came here for restaurant week, and I enjoyed myself, but the creamy chocolate dessert was my highlight.

My wife and I really enjoyed our dinner during Lincoln Square Ravenswood Restaurant Week. My wife loved the French onion soup and the Amish chicken. Both were cooked perfectly. I had the house salad and the trout, which was delicious with the vegetables and the almond beurre sauce. For dessert we shared the creme brule, which was good, and the bread pudding, which was awesome. Also, my wife had the Autumn Sweater cocktail, which she said was delightful. The delicious food and drink were complimented by excellent service - attentive but not obtrusive. We look forward to celebrating our next special day at Bistro Campagne.

Very nice romantic seating, especially in the garden during the summer. Our go-to celebration meal the half chicken is life changing
Be the first to ReplyHigh-touch service meets mediocre food.
Kitchen is not skilled in French cooking and has almost no familiarity with French cooking technique. Waiters will clear your plates at a moment's notice whether one is finished eating or not. Then the maitre'd offers his clowning achievement--he asks you to leave, mentioning that your table is needed for the next group of diners. I have the impression that management is oriented towards money instead of food. Little hospitality here.
Be the first to ReplyBistro is the best.
A neighborhood institution. One of my favorite places to sip a cocktail, enjoy some amazing appetizers, and their selection of entrees is always perfect - enough variety but not too many options that it is overwhelming. The staff is amazing and the ambience is perfect. One of the gems of Lincoln Square.

Oui! This is a wonderful local French bistro with a very interesting dining spaces (it seems like it may have been in a former single family home?). There's also a front and back patio for al fresco dining. Bistro Campagne is extremely popular so reservations are highly suggested! We've been here many times before but the most recent visit was during Restaurant Week 2023. We started off with a couple of cocktails and the bread with honey and salted butter. From the restaurant week menu, I got the onion soup, trout and chocolate pot de creme. Wow! The soup is always good, and the trout was amazing (never had it before). I had a taste of my husband's chicken and it was a little too salty for my taste (plus all the fried onion strings on top did not help it).Our server was super friendly and all the staff members were very attentive. There is a municipal lot across the street and there's plenty of street and side street parking. Nearest L stop is the Lincoln Square Brown Line stop.

Went here for restaurant week with a few friends - I had the French onion soup, the Vol-au-Vent puff pastry dish, and the Pot De Crรจme Au Chocolate (dense chocolate pudding) dessert. For $42 it felt like an absolute steal! The portions were large, and the food was absolutely delicious. We all left extremely satisfied with our dishes and plan on going back in the future to try other dishes!
Be the first to ReplyCute cozy interior, sweet staff.
Had an extensive drink menu (wine, apertifs, digestivs, cocktails, and beer). Got the cornichon martini (great), PEI mussels (ok), salmon (good), steak frites (good), and pain perdu/bread pudding (ok). I had heard rave reviews about this place but sadly wasn't blown away by the food. I'd return for the ambience and to try some of their other drinks and appetizers/sides. Street parking was quite easy in the surrounding area on a Wednesday night, and it's not too far from the Brown Line.

I was surprised at how much this place has changed, and not in a good way. Tabiko on not brandade was the first dish to arrive and it never got better. The endive salad was watery and flavorless. My partner ordered the trout. The almond sauce turned what was once a crispy skin into a stretchy, gelatinous, gray film. I ordered the steak frites, which I thought would be safe since this is a classic French dish. It, too, was flavorless, except for a red wine sauce that tasted burnt and completely smothered the room-temp steak. An odd cube of cold herb butter sat on top of the steak, not melting. It looked like guacamole. I almost forgot about the soupy mac n cheese. It was fine. Some members of the staff that congregated around the bar were so loud that I could hear every word of their conversation with one another. It completely overtook the room and made the experience that much more unenjoyable. The one silver lining: our server was great! But, this is the last time we'll be going here.

The restaurant is set up in a unique way that feels private and relaxed. The service is professional and made the experience enjoyable.
