Birdie G’s
Not sure why I never came here before. I’ve been in Santa Monica for years and this was my first time. I wish I found this restaurant earlier. Very Santa Monica vibes with great service and food. We ordered the steak frites with au poivre sauce in the side but the half rockfish was the winner. I was confused what and why just half a fish but I understood once it came out. It was humongous but very tasty. Lemon butter with capers (a bit on the heavy side with the butter but still delicious) Only negative was the $18 parking fee. That’s almost NYC prices

What a find! Tucked away in a presumably former warehouse, this is a beautiful place with some incredibly delicious dishes that I have never had anywhere else. And a great and pretty reasonable wine list. And it was very kid friendly. We sat in the restaurant - but terrace was lovely as was heard. Best place we ate in a week in Santa Monica and we ate out a lot!. It’s only a $10 Uber from the ocean front and worth the short trip.

The spot great for casual night out. The Rock Fish is the star highly recommend. Cool place, best food we had in the area. The Rose petal pie reminded of jello dishes of the past

We were taken here by friends when staying in the Santa Monica on a mid week evening. It’s in an odd industrial location, but once inside the industrial vibe is appealing. The menu is quite confusing, but once you realise that most of the plates are for sharing, and most of the pretentious descriptions are simple to understand dishes then the experience becomes more enjoyable and less expensive. After a couple of starters (the cornbread was very small) we basically split a lemon chicken and fried chicken dish between 4 and along with a big side of fries had a wonderful comfort food dinner. Wines seemed expensive- $23 for a glass of French Sancerre was outrageous. I liked the QR code system to get the car back from valet parking at the end. Paid on phone including tip so no scratting about (British term) with dollar bills in the dark!

One of our foodie friends insisted that we visit one of his favorite restaurants - Birdie G's. He went a lot before the pandemic and was excited to come back. We quickly understood why Birdie G's is a fave. For our table of 4, we ordered the following to share: matzo bread, relish tray, Birdie's caesar, open faced tomato sandwich, pork & chicken liver terrine, rice flour-battered mushrooms, brown butter & matzo dumplings, and the pickle chick. We had to pass on dessert - we were beyond (ful)filled. The big hits were the matzo bread, pork & chicken liver terrine, and the pickle chick - even though we enjoyed all the dishes and had no problem cleaning all our plates. Our server was both personable and attentive and made our first visit quite enjoyable. Our reservations were at 6:30, and at that time, the restaurant was about half full. At 7:00, it seemed like everyone showed up and the restaurant quickly filled up. Our server came over to our table and encouraged us to put in our food order "now to beat the rush." If you're looking for some new tastes and approaches to traditional comfort food, then add Birdie G's to your list. You won't be disappointed.
Be the first to ReplyTrying too hard - strange mix flavors?
Beets and fish eggs just don't mix well! Fried chicken was some of the worst we've tried. Husband gave it to dog and wants me to write here dog farted all night. We wanted to love the food here - but other than the matzo ball soup, everything was over the top and/or too salty. Too expensive. Loved the space/decor - but will not be returning. Too bad since we are locals.
Be the first to ReplyGood ambience, interesting food but wouldn’t rush back
Location is slightly in the grittier end of Santa Monica - must drive but limited parking with valet. Outdoor and indoor seating - we chose inside as we were a table of 9. Highly air conditioned, too cold for me. There was a kids menu, portions small. Cornbread and fried mushrooms very good with decent portions. The relish tray was tasty and had a fantastic onion dip - highly recommend. The half jerk chicken was good but not spectacular. The tomatoes were lovely and the beets also good. Macaroni and cheese was good but very unusual. The chocolate layer cake was huge but very delicious.Catered well to our party’s dietary requirements - gluten free and vegetarian. Personally wouldn’t bring younger children there - we brought our kids (11/14/16) but the 11 and 14 year olds couldn’t really find anything on the main menu they wanted. The service was generally good. The restaurant was buzzy but a bit loud at times. All in all would recommend however was rather expensive so be prepared!

Six of us had dinner last night. Ate outside but large enclosure protects from any adverse weather. Food is definitely meant for sharing. All dishes were outstanding, with the eclectic starters absolutely amazing. The lavender almonds sounds weird, but we’re delicious as were the marinated white beet salad, the cherry tomato mix, the relish tray, and an unbelievably great matzo ball soup. A limited number of what they call pickle chicks are available, an unusually delicious and non-greasy fried chicken dish. Don’t miss it if not sold out. The steak frites was an equally great dish. Make sure you share with the table to try the maximum number of dishes. We were so stuffed, (also had the grilled red pepper appetizer and pasta starter), that were not able to order dessert. Located outside the downtown district, very worth a trip. We will be going back again.
Be the first to ReplyOutstanding, dream worthy creative food, high prices, great experience, great staff
We went here in October 2021 then this Sunday May 1st. Amazing waiter Tom (waiter) remembered us from 6 months ago! Date bundt cake should win an award for creativity, incredible texture and flavor, and just being perfect. The Persian spiced lamb on air-popped crispy rice is AMAZING but at $59 is $20 too much. Still I cannot wait to go back. The crispy chicken is perfect, baked/fried texture but not at all greasy or dry, just right. sauces and seasonings here are PERFECT, and the stuff Michelin star restaurants are aiming for. Bartenders are attentive, good listeners and will make something truly custom if you want. Elegant intimate garden setting outdoors. Inside has high ceilings and like most modern restaurants music and hard surfaces are just too loud. Desert is the best part here. The rose petal chiffon pie is pretty, fun and delicate. I would like a bit more rose flavor but I am really into roses, probably more than most people. Super delicious creme brule pie. Deserts here are life altering. Even with a few issues (high prices and loud interior seating area: both of which are common in new restaurants) this place is super great!

Have to say, this was an exceptional experience. ~ great atmosphere and funky interiors make for a great start. We are vegetarian and every plate delivered a taste sensation, this included the peas and pecorino, asparagus, sunchokes, and both pasta dishes. mmmmmm. Have got to mention too the cocktails - think these were the best from our 7 days break. Whatever you do, make the effort to try here - you will not forget it !
Be the first to ReplyThree stars if it weren’t so absurdly over-priced for what is actually delivered
fundamental problem is that the food reads so much better than it is. the $30 vegetable/pickle plate was OK but no better than what you would get for $10 at even high-end restaurants. the matzoh plate consisted of 6 broken shards and the “house-made” whipped butter was virtually without flavor. Fried Mushrooms and Persimmon plates were very pretty but not all that flavorful. The sea bass was significantly over-cooked and unpleasantly dry. the vanilla ice cream had a decent mouth-feel but almost zero flavor and the chocolate cake had practically no chocolate or any other. definable taste . . . and they kept upselling sparkling water. the food here is pretty but bland . . . Michelin Star or not . . . you can do so much better in LA, even at other Rustic Canyon restaurants.

Over the top innovative and delicious. On par with Michelin restaurants at a reasonable price. We loved the beets with trout roe and liberty duck and radish kabobs. The matzah with butter is a must. How can butter be that good? We shared the chicken with pickle chips which sells out every night by 6 pm. Get their early because this is the best chicken of your life. The drinks are fun and wine list great. The chocolate bundt cake out of this world. And shout out to our Sarah inside server that walked us through the menu and helped make a very memorable night.
Be the first to ReplyGreat patio dining
Birdie G was one of our first dining out experiences after the lockdown! Comfortable patio in front. We enjoyed the yummy trumpet mushrooms, striped bass, cornbread and matzo ball soup. The los petal pie was interesting and light. Loved the gooey date bundt cake with caramel!
Good service.
Sooo good!
We had one of just about everything on the menu and it was all superb. Great service and loved the atmosphere
Be the first to ReplyMind-blowing American restaurant
A fantastic, mind-blowing restaurant. Perfect seasoning, generous portion, good cocktails, warm service, interes dining space. I have been to many michelin star restaurants in US(collect 50 stars), this one would beat most of them. Real American restaurant, no abuse of luxury yet meaningless material, no waste on visual and unnecessary gastronomy. With careful and accurate seasoning, fresh local material choices, this restaurant would be a shining star in Saint Monica.
We two ordered 8 courses in total, including 3 cold starters, 2 hot plate, 2 grilled meat, 1 dessert, 4 glasses of wine. It only charges 160 for this great feast.
I do highly recommend this restaurant. Please try the matzo ball soup, summer as a salad, acg Caesar, duck kebab, grilled lamb, rose pedal pie.
Wonderful outdoor mid-Covid dining experience!
Had an early mid-week dinner with my husband. We found the location and ambiance lovely, the service excellent and the menu options unique. Got there just before the end of happy hour and promptly devoured the half order of the vegetables with onion dip (perfect size for two people), kimchi, pierogies, and french fries. Would definitely order the kimchi, pierogies and fries again. Glad we tried the raved-about onion dip but would skip it next time. We then tried the mushrooms (just okay and not worth the cost), cornbread (so-so) but the Rockfish was excellent.

Food, wine, service, atmosphere - this place has it all! And you'd never know it from standing outside on the street.
Our group of four had so many items on the menu, I wish I had photos to remember it all. Cast-iron cornbread is delicious - we ordered it twice. The radishes and butter, cucumbers, tomatoes and ricotta, and beets "charoset" were all great - even the guy who doesn't like tomatoes or beets enjoyed those dishes! The king trumpet mushrooms, rockfish and flat iron steak were all enjoyed. The matzo brei was the biggest surprise on the menu - I had no idea what to expect. The ingrediants came together so nicely, I had two servings :) Luckily, after all that, we still had room for the sticky date bundt cake for dessert. Of course, it was also delicious.
New-American restaurant with Elevated Diner Food
New-American restaurant with creative spins on diner food. Made a reservation through Resy for four on a Wednesday at 7:30 on the patio. It’s valet parking for $8 (cash only) and street parking was next to impossible, although one of my friends got really lucky. The patio was nice because it was quieter than the dining room so you could hear each other talk. I liked the playlist on the patio too (lots of Hozier) and there are blankets if you’re cold.
The waiter was very nice although he wasn’t much help with picking out what to order. Everything was heralded as a must-order item, so in the end we all just picked a dish and unanimously picked a side so we ordered 5 things for the four of us (plus a dessert). It’s family style and you’re meant to share multiple dishes, so it’s good to come with a group. Food comes out in the order that it’s made.
In terms of nice restaurants, the service is top-notch, the food is creative but falls flat in execution for some of the dishes, parking sucks, and the ambiance is bustling and trendy.
Hang town Brei - scramble of pork belly and fried oysters (2) covered in a bright yellow orange hollandaise.
Libert duck confit (Wednesday blue plate special) - the duck meat falls right off the bone so I’d recommend just stripping all the meat and mixing it into the fried rice. The fried rice reminds me of something my mom would make at home (although she’d use spam and not duck).
Chicken liver mousse Texas toast - a bit disappointed by this one. The onions were tender but I didn’t like the texture of the toast, as I wish it was crispier to offset the mushiness of the mousse.
King trumpet mushroom fritti - these remind me of the mushroom fries at Bottega Louie; safe choice for a side dish, assuming everyone likes mushrooms
Kimberlys chicken scallopine - this reminds me of a higher end Caesar salad. The croutons were good, but it was kind of a mess to split up. Not very memorable.
Sticky date Bundt cake - my favorite part of the meal. It’s really sweet but it reminds me of an English pudding and the sauce was caramel-y and butter-y.
Inventive Cuisine in a buzzy atmosphere make for a winning combination.
Birdie G's is a one of kind experience because you won't find this mix of cuisine anywhere else. It's a little Italian and a little Jewish but in combinations that are thoughtful and new. The bar is off to the side and makes great craft cocktails, using only fresh ingredients. The restaurant is an oasis in its neighborhood but worth seeking out and a celebrity sighting didn't hurt.
Be the first to ReplyDelicious dinner!
Had an early Sunday dinner at Birdie G's because we had theatre tickets. Enjoyed every bite: shared the sausage ravioli, gnocchi with bits of broccoli- both with delicious sauces; the lightly breaded trumpet mushroom fritti, and the Sunday chicken pot pie. For dessert we had the Matzo bark- matzo layered with toffee, chocolate and nuts. We were quite full so took most of the Matza bark to go.
Good cocktails and beer. Great service as all servers help out and attend to tables.
