I visit NYC once or twice a year to visit my daughter.
One of our stops is always having a drink at Belelmans Bar. On Monday, February 19th, my daughter and I were seated and served two drinks. At the end of the visit, our bill came. I handed my debt card to the waiter. When the charge slip came back, I told my daughter to look at it to figure the tip. She noticed that we were over charged. She hailed our waiter over. He apologized and came back with another corrected bill. I signed it and understood that the incorrect charge would drop off my account in a few working days. When that did not happen, I contacted Chase bank, and explained what had happened. They said they would remove the charge for the time being and file a claim for me. Since I had all my paperwork, I thought the problem was solved. On March 12th, I received a letter from Chase saying my claim had been denied and that they were going to deduct the credit they had posted from my account. To say I am furious...Is a gross understatement. Due to the fact I paid $140.50 for two standard cocktails...I will never darken the doors of the Bemelmans Bar again. I wish I had just paid the overcharge and left no tip, but instead I believed what I was told by our waiter, (who commented on my Disney Card telling me he was going to Disney World soon). I have two adult children who love the bar and frequent it fairly often. I told them rethink that! A very disappointed, and upset patron Nancy T. Dallas, TX

Greatest bar in the universe! What more can I say? Been there many times while visiting New York. Terrific ambiance, efficient service, limited menu but food is good. Best place on earth to celebrate a birthday. You walk in, tell the bartender it's your birthday and the whole crowd will buy you champagne. No exaggeration. Live piano with top notch musicians. Don't miss this iconic landmark in the Carlyle Hotel when you are in NYC. Five stars are not enough. Always packed, always the epitome of fun.

Giving it 5 stars simply out of the respect to the reputation. Their live music is always tasteful. They used to have the best espresso martinis in town a few years back - haven't tried it recently. Their old fashioned is a no-go.m, too sweet. Their snacks and food are decent. Overall, must see at least once in your lifetime

Impressive performance with live music, delicious table edibles and food, outstanding drinks and gorgeous decor. Was packed Thursday night at 10:30 pm but was seated right away and impeccable service. Love the restaurant and champagne bar as well. It's just a gorgeous Hotel and fun and upbeat with an elegant friendly happy crowd. Can't wait to go back.

Why has it taken me so long to get here as a native New Yorker???? I just LOVED all of it! The Swankyiness of it all. It was classic NY! I ordered the Jackie O and it was delish. We enjoyed the complimentary nuts and chips. We had the charcuterie and it was just enough to have with our drinks. The server was splendid and offered to take my pic! I enjoyed the jackets on the bartenders, just a nice touch. This was see or be seen vibes! Great ambience and we were not rushed. Great place

5 stars for ambience, 1 for service. Dealt with a condescending waiter (taller, husky, grey/white hair) who couldn't refrain from projecting his shortcomings on us. Requested a third drink and a glass of water. He brought the drink but forgot the water. No big deal. When he passed again I asked for a water. He apologized for forgetting and I said it was no problem. Two minutes later he walks by and asks if we were guests at the hotel. When we told him we weren't he snarked "Could have fooled me with how hard you're going" and walked away before we could reply. Three drinks and a water? We weren't driving anywhere. We weren't falling off our chairs or hooting or hollering. He needed to pass his self righteous judgement? Hotel guests will be waited on without question but non guests should feel lucky for being waited on at all? It honestly seemed like he couldn't accept his failure for forgetting the water. Big deal. Get over it. No one was complaining. He excuses himself by blaming us for demanding too much as non hotel guests? Unfortunate.
Be the first to ReplyWe came here as it's listed as one of the top bars in NYC.
I will admit that the service and ambiance were excellent and it totally makes sense why it gets labeled a top bar. The ambiance is very posh and upscale. The decor is very classy but also unique as it Bemelman's art. The service is excellent as everyone there is very kind. The day we went, there was only one bartender/server and the poor guy was so busy but still would stop by as much as they could. The bar also gives you little snacks with your drink and they were delicious. The drinks in my opinion were pretty average - the same as all other upscale cocktail bars but obviously not as good as some of NYC's famous speakeasies such a Death & Co. or PDT. The price was also pretty steep for a drink, however, given the bar, I guess that part should have been expected.

Host seats people or doesn't in the most arbitrary way. Says empty tables are taken, go stand at the bar and will get you when something opens. Never gets you and seats people that just showed up. My water glass was dirty with lipstick. Bartenders wear jackets but are disorganized and take forever to take your order even at the bar. It's all smoke and mirrors, this place isn't well run and relies on NYers and Tourists coming regardless of the experience.
Be the first to ReplyBeware of planning an event here.
It may look like an iconic NYC venue, but they will lead you on the entire way. After you spend plenty of money to book your event at the Carlyle, they will deny post drinks afterwards.... despite assurances that they will accommodate you. Our buyout at the event space of the Carlyle was instead prioritized by walk-ins. Not reservations or hotel guests or someone who booked out the event space.... Literally walk ins off the street. If we knew they were going to prioritize anyone who walks in, then they should have explicitly warned us so that we could have made alternative plans. Poor communication and disappointing expectations all around, especially considering the amount of money we paid for this event.

My guest was not allowed into the bar because they thought their pants were too wide.... How judgmental and antiquated. They told us there was no dress code but the manager wouldn't allow the pants. We wonder if there were other factors that went into this decision and that the manager used the width of the pants to conceal other biases as this is a ridiculous reason to deny entry.
Be the first to ReplySuper fancy, classic feel bar.
If you remember "Madeline" from way back then. All the murals on the wall are original by the creator of that character, Ludwig Bemelmans. The drinks, two martinis. One was called "Elaine's Smokey martini" and the other was called "Don't tell Tommy. So good

we couldn't get in because we were told it was full and we wouldn't get in even if we waited. i get it- perhaps it is full so i cannot comment on the food or service. however i can comment on the attitude of the staff. the way they told us it was full and we wouldn't get in was with the most snotty condescending attitude like how dare we dane to walk into their fine establishment. so rude. i'll never go back or even try to get in. i'll give my money to anyone else. mind you we were coming from work for a drink and dressed professionally and were just inquiring- no need to be so rude.

An establishment! Went on a frigid, windy December evening on a weekday and was lucky to snag a seat at the bar after waiting in line for about 15, or even 20 minutes. Thankfully I got there early enough to wait inside (some people who came later were directed to wait outside the door). They give you snacks with your drink. I ordered a martini, which comes with a refill. It was not cheap and strong (yay for anyone who wants to get their money's worth). The wall art was lovely to look at and the bathrooms were pristine. Might not be the best place to come with a big group since they prioritize hotel guests and seats are limited. Also there may be an additional cover charge if your visit overlaps with live music/a pianist.

Honestly wait time was about an hour but it was worth it! The bartender was nice and the drinks were delicious! The jazz band was amazing as well!! Def coming back next time I'm in NY!

I dislike writing less than stellar reviews for a bar as classic as Bemelmans but this place really isn't what it used to be. We all know the pros of this bar - strong cocktails, beautiful murals and decor with a ton of history. I was disappointed and wished I would have read some of the Yelp reviews before going. I took my sister who is visiting me in nyc on a Friday night. We arrived at around 7:45pm and was seated at the bar by 8pm. There wasn't any solo pianist playing until 930pm which disappointing as we thought there was solo pianist playing until 830pm on the website. We decided to pay for $20pp cover and stay to watch the jazz trio since we are already there. The drinks menu were extensive from beer to generous pour of strong delicious cocktail, even port wines. Luis, our bartender recommended the Serrano cocktail, which apparently is his creation. If you are here for jazz, this isn't the right place. This is more of a classy bar (a place to be seen) with background jazz live band vs a place to listen to live jazz. If I were a jazz musician, I would be pissed as the crowd was loud and just talking away. There were a lot of couples/people on dates and older men. A couple of them who were touchy and one who attempted to touch my hair and face. Luis helped signal the manager to warn this man, but little was done to ensure he leaves. I decided to swap seats with my sister and only after multiple attempts to ignore and my sister and I having to assert that we don't want him touching or talking to us, the man finally left on his own. One of the guests who witness this decided to complain to the manager on behalf of us. The manager did come to see if I was ok though it seems more of potentially managing a liability than anything. I'm not sure I will be back. There is a new Aman hotel nearby with jazz bar, so I'll be excited to try that one.
Be the first to ReplyMy date and I didn't make it into the primary bar.
The place was packed and humming with energy. The staff saw our plight and made our evening, finding us seats in the lounge and allowing us to soak in the ambiance, the drinks and the company.
Be the first to ReplyBemelmans is a charming, classic spot.
You wait approx 45 min - 1 hour to get in, and cocktails are $25-35. All of this is worth it for a memorable NY outing! However, we recently went and were told to expect a 45 min wait. After waiting over 1.5 hrs in line, we were told that all of the tables were in fact reserved and we should not expect to get in for at least another 1 hour for standing room only. The lack of communication at such a "high quality" establishment was disappointing and showed a lack of respect for our time.

My good looking and intelligent husband and I met here with a friend and his new girlfriend. He lives close by and recommended the place. The line to get in was long but we were late so cut in the front with our friends. It's a very formal place, and we were totally underdressed but are extremely good looking people so no one said anything. The security is really Over the top! My husband said he saw an altercation with someone trying to slip in, I was in the bathroom during this, but do love a good altercation! The friends we were with tend to chat ALOT so I was planning to drink a bunch. I got some dirty martinis which were perfectly dirty and HUGE(I later found out they were $30 or so, but whatever!) They brought me an extra refill glass with each one. They also had really good snacks at each table, complementary. The piano music was also wonderful. There was a $25 cover charge to stay for the late night jazz, which we did. The bass, jazz, piano and singing were really lovely. I was also really tipsy so it might not be as good as I thought. Service was good, nice ambiance and a lot of upscale nice looking people. Really fun night, recommend going but plan to wait in line for a while.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing ambience and $30 Martinis with artwork galore.
Bartender was cordial at best but the Maitre D engaged us in lively conversation and even offered a great tip on how they prepare their onion soup. Thoroughly enjoyed the experience and will go back but won't sit at the bar.
