This is the place to be if you adore Madeleine.
The artwork is all over the walls! We looked over the menu and thought we were set, but we weren't invited to the kid's tea! We did notice a beautiful display of cookies and cakes, along with fresh produce. The girls were really fortunate, I suppose!
Be the first to ReplyFantastic drink spot
This spot is stunning. The art on the walls is directly from the book Madeline. The bar is named after the author of the book so it fits beautifully. The bartenders, especially Sharif, are very talented. Clean, quick, efficient, friendly and so great to interact with. 10/10 would recommend stopping into this amazing hotel.
Be the first to ReplySee the murals, forget the service.
Wanted to see Bemelman's charming murals, and were willing to buy a couple of overpriced cocktails as an entry fee. Read how loud & crowded it was in the evenings, so went around 2 pm, a dead time. Only 8 people in the place, served by two bartenders. We first sat at the bar, looked around a bit, and asked if we could move to a table. Without looking at us, bartender grumbled, 'Sit wherever you want.' We took a central table and admired the murals. After a while, we got ourselves drink menus from a nearby bench and picked a few that looked good. After another 10 minutes one of the bartenders swept past our table and said he'd be with us. After another 10 minutes, we left. The murals bring in a guaranteed stream of tourists, so they don't need to make the least effort on behalf of customers. Good for them!
Be the first to ReplyBeautiful Bar with a history!
Such a beautiful bar. If you are a fan of Madeline you will love this bar. The drinks are overpriced but good. The other murals that Ludwig Bemelman painted in the bar are delightful. It is a beautiful place to enjoy a drink and a snack and just enjoy the views!

We came here as it's listed as one of the top bars in NYC. I will admit that the service and ambiance were excellent and it totally makes sense why it gets labeled a top bar. The ambiance is very posh and upscale. The decor is very classy but also unique as it Bemelman's art. The service is excellent as everyone there is very kind. The day we went, there was only one bartender/server and the poor guy was so busy but still would stop by as much as they could. The bar also gives you little snacks with your drink and they were delicious. The drinks in my opinion were pretty average - the same as all other upscale cocktail bars but obviously not as good as some of NYC's famous speakeasies such a Death & Co. or PDT. The price was also pretty steep for a drink, however, given the bar, I guess that part should have been expected.

Skip it, it's a club now, completely destroyed. couldn't hear the trio from 5 feet away, packed like sardines with sugar daddy's and sugar momma's. No more elegance and sophistication, a true gem that's gone, probably forever. They never responded to my emails either, when I asked about the trio of entertainment. Might as well have a DJ, never go back again.

I stopped by Bemelman's at lunchtime with my family on a hot August afternoon for some refreshments (mostly I wanted to show my son, daughter-in-law and granddaughter the marvelous Madeline murals). As our bartender Albert was setting down glasses of water, I clumsily and much to my embarrassment, spilled my glass across the beautiful wooden table. Albert quickly, and without a word, wiped the table dry and poured a new glass of water. Like nothing had happened. A true Profile in Courtesy and Professionalism. Thanks for turning the moment into a pleasant memory for all. See you next time (more carefully).

Meet family members for cocktails last night. The art work at this venue and the adjoining dining room are incredible. The bartender and captain were fabulous and really took care of us. The drinks were wonderful. I had the "Madeline Vesper." We dropped a drink at our table, before we even started drinking, and they moved us to a nicer one. Even when they had trouble with the billing system, they went out of their way to make it effortless. It's expensive, but that's why it is a NYC 5 star hotel. Cheers!
Be the first to ReplyYou need to experience this place
Being a lifelong fan of the Madeline books and a history lover, I couldnโt wait to have drinks at this bar. We arrived at around 8:00 and the place was packed. The bar manager was reluctant to find us a tableโฆ.I think it was because they value a certain clientele thereโฆ.the place was filled with young people. After some convincing we managed to secure a table. The inside of the bar, as promised, is covered with beautiful murals. It was so charming. Although I loved our time here, be warned, the drinks are expensive and there is a cover charge after a certain time. We felt like the cost was worth the experience, but be prepared for a costly night out.
Be the first to ReplyVery Sad
My friend and I arrived about 5:30, we waited a long while for someone to acknowledge us, finally asked a bartender if we should seat ourselves and he told us someone would be with us - 2 people came in behind us and he invited them to sit at the bar! Another 5 mins and the Host grumpily showed us to a teeny table and barked that we knew we had to pay a $15.00 cover charge - we said fine, we knew that. We sat at least another 5 mins, trying to get the QR code to work - it didn't - finally a waiter rushed up and gave us drink menus - then at least another 5 mins for him to come back to take our orders. Drinks finally arrived and they were just right, the bar snacks were a nice addition - and the piano music was lovely. It was very loud in there and it is expensive - but had we been made to feel welcome and valued, we would have ordered appetizers and more drinks. Clearly they didn't care so much if we came back because they knew there are plenty more visitors waiting to come- so sad that such an iconic place treats visitors like this - By the way, we were well dressed and polite ladies -
Be the first to ReplyUnfriendly Barman & Over Priced
We went for a drink at the Bemelmans Bar late afternoon on a Friday. It is small and our first impression was good. Very cosy and charming. The walls are covered in cartoon type drawings. We ordered our drinks at the bar. The bar man was unfriendly and borderline rude. The drinks were OK but totally over priced. The bar feels a bit run down on closer inspection. I would avoid this place to be honest. The tipping in NY is now so ridiculous too. 15, 18 or 22% is automatically calculated everywhere in NY these days. Donโt be afraid to give zero and you decide any tip! Donโt be intimidated to follow what is proposed. This horrible tipping for everything mentality is a real turnoff and out of control.

Legendary and there is a reason why. The word legendary gets tossed around almost to easy these days. But Bemmelmans bar is legendary. The staff is just incredible and the drinks are of excellent quality aswell. Atmosphere and music makes our visits laidback and exciting at the same time.
Be the first to ReplyA Perfect Evening at Bemelmans Bar
So, we came to Bemelmans Bar with high expectations and they were all exceeded. The place is beautiful, the music is excellent, food and drink top notch, and the service is warm and attentive (Thank you, Leo, for a wonderful evening). We plan on making Bemelmans Bar a regular stop for all future trips to New York.
Be the first to ReplyIT'S OUR NIGHT AT THE CAFE CARLYLE!
I assume that Bemelmans Bar and Cafe Carlyle are one and the same (perhaps not). We had both the dinner and show in the main room in March 2022. It was a special occasion and on our original "bucket list" for NYC. On multiple visits before covid, one could not make a reservation. This time, we were able to (thanks covid). Overall, we were very pleased with both the entertainment and our pre-show dinner. We made reservations in advance of our trip (of course). We've walked by on visits before to peek in only. This night, we arrived a little early just so we could soak up the atmosphere and get a good seat. Our seat was along the wall bank and in the corner, with a great view of the entertainment stage. Actually, any seat in there would be fine. The room is small and elegant (some say old school). It was perfect for us. Our server was very efficient and helpful with the menu and attention. If one remembers, it's like a "dinner theater", but with music. Off the separate "Cocktail Menu" we had two classes of Perrier-Jouet champagne off their cocktail menu. Then, we ordered their "Two Course Prix Fixe" menu selection. You can choose an appetizer and one main dish. We also chose some side dishes and a dessert. I had first the Lobster Bisque as a starter. For the main dishes we ordered the Murray's Roasted Half-Chicken and Faroe Island Salmon. My wife also ordered the Broccoli Salad. Portions were generous. I wouldn't say they were creative, but tasted fine. Of course, for dessert we had to have the traditional New York Cheesecake. After dinner, we enjoyed the performance of Hamilton Leithauser and his back up band. We had never heard of him before since we are not locals. It turns out he is quite well known and popular in the New York scene. Later on this year, we discovered he provides musical scores for TV shows/series. His style was unique and it took a few songs for us to get in to his groove. Still, he has his own style and delivery. If you can now get in and have never been, you must try and enjoy your night out at the Cafe Carlyle with entertainment. If you book online, keep in mind that you must pay separately for the show and dinner. It is expensive, but worth the evening of dining out somewhere special and entertaining.

Wonderful place that yes or if you have to go visit. It's like being in a 30's movie, the walls are painted and decorated by the artist Bemelsman, hence its name. You walk in and you realize that the place is pretty because of how the waiters and diners are dressed. Tables with lights, and the whole environment with medium lights. Excellent place, if the chairs are a bit uncomfortable, it is worth going once. It is a nice place to go with friends and have a great time and have an unforgettable experience. You get a great impression about the place and the treatment that the employees give you.

Bemelmans is a beautiful bar with a wonderful atmosphere. I highly recommend the martinis, but do know that they are large (not that that's a problem).

Great old school small bar inside the Carlyle hotel on the Upper East side. Nice ambiance, decoration and seamless service.

Prices aside, you be hard pressed to find a more perfect place to have a drink. Great service from seasoned mixologists, a fantastic trio of bar snacks when you sit down, and the art exhibit that is the walls. Places like this can not be recreated, they have marinated over time getting better and better with age. Entering around noon on a weekday meant we had the entire bar to ourselves free to walk the entire space and truly enjoy the murals. It's gorgeous and worth the trip to the upper east side alone.

The provenance of this special little corner of a grand hotel is part of what makes Bemelmans Bar a truly unique place to enjoy a cocktail with friends.
