This was one of the best dinning experiences that I've had
This was one of the best dinning experiences that I've had and the ambiance and atmosphere is unmatched. While it is encouraged that everyone at the table shared the same tasting menu, my partner and I ordered two different tasting menus and it was a pleasure to try so many different dishes. This is probably discouraged but I really wanted to try as many dishes as I could and I was really happy with this decision. We were seated on the second floor and it was overlooking the kitchen area where the staff prepared the cold items. It was really cool to see how the kitchen is run and see the food being plated. The staff was quite accommodating and then they were really nice. My only qualm was that in the amuse bouche course at the beginning, the broccoli tart that I was eating did not structurally hold up and it fell as I was trying to eat it. My partner had the same experience and the florets stained the table. The waiters put a cloth over it since removing it might cause more staining but this ruined my photos for the night. Minor gripe but it was still an enjoyable evening. As for the food, there were some dishes that I wasn't super fond of but I love the experimentation and the risk taking; even with dishes I didn't love, I still enjoyed the overall experience.

Wonderful interior space with warm, friendly staff and fantastic food. I really enjoyed our evening here. Some of the dishes were extraordinary and a few I didn't find impressive. I say if you have some money to burn hit this place up, as it is quite exquisite.

I still don't believe how perfect was the food, the service was perfect it's the least you can say, and the ambience was amazing and elegant

This was the nicest meal we had during our trip but it wasn't the best meal we had. Service was spectacular from start to finish. I can't rave about that enough. The restaurant was really nicely decorated and they gave us a tour of the restaurant. We each ended up doing the 3 course menu, so we could try different items. The food was good and innovative, but I will say entrees were the best. The apps and desserts were ok. It was a good experience and I'm glad we got to try a Michelin star/top 50 in the world restaurant, but the food wasn't the stand out to us.
Be the first to ReplyFor our family vacation, we decided to splurge and go all
For our family vacation, we decided to splurge and go all out for our last night and have this 2-Michelin starred meal. We figured a 2-Michelin starred tasting menu would be cheaper in Europe than anything we could ever find in NYC, so we went for it. My sister made reservations about 1-1.5 months in advance for our party of 6. It was for a Friday night and we did the 7 pm seating. You can choose to order a la carte, or from two tasting menus - the Classics Menu, and the Evolution Menu. We opted for the Evolution, which is supposed to take you on a journey from how Belcanto started, to present day. This menu consisted of 10 courses. I won't list them all because I don't want to give away the element of surprise (though I'm sure some of the courses are seasonal anyway - we went in December) but I will tell you my favorites of the night. They were the trio of appetizers (seaweed with caviar, tuna and uni, crispy chicken skin), their housemade butter served with your choice of bread, beetroot salad, scarlet shrimp curry, and sea bass. Everything else was just okay, or was something I would not have ordered nor would I order again. But that is the fun part of a tasting menu. You get to try new things you never thought you would try. And of course, you're not going to like every item on the menu. At the end of the meal when serving dessert, they gave us each shirt sleeves to wear on our arms and use as napkins. It was an homage to Chef Josรฉ Avillez, who they said as a child, used to just wipe his mouth on his sleeve after eating a meal. I thought that was a cute/quirky touch to the experience. Service was impeccable but I guess it better be for that price and for the stars they've earned. There was always someone nearby if you needed something. They put the dishes down in sync. I dropped my napkin and not even one minute later, someone appeared with a new one, without me even requesting one. I would say that my only criticism is that the meal was just way too long. But I suspect it's because we were a party of 6, so they need to wait until every person is done with a course before they bring out the next one. It lasted about 3.5 hours. I've been to other Michelin-starred tasting menus and I would say the max was probably 2.5 hours. Towards the end of the meal, we were all just tired and ready to leave, especially since we had to catch an early flight back home the next morning. Would I come back here again? Probably not. If I were to do another Michelin restaurant in Lisbon, I would want to try something different. Was the food worth the splurge? I'm still not sure. But it was a fun dining experience and I'm glad I got to enjoy it with my family.

Crispy Suckling Pig, Aged Beef Loin Was a pleasure trying Belcanto! This 2 Michelin star restaurant has just the most beautiful interior, with lovely arched ceilings and plenty of natural light. We decided to opt for a la carte entrees only, but the restaurant kindly served us multiple surprise "moments," which were all delicious and interesting to try. Highlights of the moments were the fresh Tuna amuse bouche, the carrot dish, and the chocolate espresso dessert items. The crispy suckling pig was great, truly as crispy of a skin as you can get, with an incredibly tender and moist meat. The orange sauce on the plate was a delight--I couldn't get enough of it. Great aged beef loin--so tender, excellent sauces. Even the breads and butters were amazing. Was it worth the hefty price tag? Sort of, for the experience and the great flavors. But definitely not a regular thing for me!
Be the first to ReplyWe were excited to visit Belcanto on our 2 days in Lisbon
We were excited to visit Belcanto on our 2 days in Lisbon and prioritized finding time to eat here. We were able to get a lunch reservation for their classics menu and were greeted warmly we we arrived. The service in general was prompt and professional without being stuffy. I do wish they would pace out the dishes better when someone uses the restroom. There were a couple of times where the dish came when someone was away. The server did wait to explain the dish but it was a bit awkward with the food on the table. All the dishes we had were good but I was a bit disappointed that there wasn't a lot of creatively. My favorite dishes were the famous golden egg with truffle and the suckling pig course which had the perfect crispy pig skin. The desserts were also really good and I loved the interesting squid ink desert. All-in-all it was a very nice meal and a great spot to try when in Portugal as it showcases traditional ingredients with a twist in a way that's difficult to find elsewhere. On small note I was happy to see was that the table next to us was a family with 3 young kids. The staff were patient throughout the meal, presenting the amuse bouche to the kids and generally being very nice even when they started being fussy towards the end. There is also a kids menu which from what I heard is the choice of red sauce pasta, fish, or beef.

Omg. This is rated as #25 out of top 50 restaurants in the world. We already ate (3 years ago) at what is now called the #1 in Lima Peru Central which was an experience. But everything Every morsel of food, every presentation of the food was just perfect. It's in a beautiful old stone building in the Chiado area of Lisbon. We started with a selection of beautiful little apps done like chocolates on a candlelabra type ornament. I will Always remember the bite size piece of foie gras wrapped in gold leaf! I had the Evolution tasting menu my hubby the Traditional. Sadly we both had colds so didn't do the wine pairing but did do their non alcoholic pairing! My most memorable dish was this incredible squab (they also called it pigeon as did my hubby - made it a little weird) but Yikes so rich + full of flavor. That + the Foie Gras. They also had a lovely bread service including a delish cornbread. Maybe only kink for me is finding the desserts overly sweet.... They have a box of 4 Bon bons to leave with + a take home menu for memories we surely made. The cost is lots but on a par with the higher end NYC ones. Lastly non pretentious the waitstaff + customers too only saw one Prada handbag! When there it's worth the prices! Sorry can't get more pics in maybe later.
Be the first to ReplyThis was my first two-star Michelin experience, and it was
This was my first two-star Michelin experience, and it was very disappointing. The food was okay, nothing special. An exceptional chef should be able to take ordinary ingredients and add to it. Their dishes mostly did not achieve that; the carrot dish literally tasted like slices of carrots. The fish dish was lacking in flavors. Maybe it's just not suited for us, which is fine. The pace was extremely slow. We sat 30 minutes between some courses. The atmosphere was sterile. But the worst part was the service. 1) From the beginning, our waiter had requested that we notify the staff if we need to step away from the table to use the bathroom so the plates would not be brought out when we are away. The way it was presented to us was somewhat condescending. What is this kindergarten? Is it not the waiting staff's job to observe when we step away? It puts undue pressure on the diners. Things only got worse from here. 2) After the first course, we had some crumps on the table. They were not cleaned. Few more courses later we were served bread, we had some more crumps accumulating on the table. We watched 2 more courses come and go after the bread, and the crumps sat there staring at the us and the waiter. Finally, my friend asked for a sweep, and the waiter did the most inexplicable thing. He cleaned my friend's section and left everyone else's untouched. Maybe he thought the rest of us wanted to savor the crumps for later? 3) Throughout the meal, we also had the pleasure of being accompanied by 2 fruit flies that would occasionally drop by to have a taste of wine and the food. At end of the meal, I expressed my concerns to the service manager, who came off a little defensive regarding point 1, apologized for point 2, and told us they have weekly fruit fly cleaning regarding point 3. We were offered a free drink or tour of kitchen which we declined. Nothing short of cutting our bill would have made up for the poor experience. In addition, one of my friends had a substitute dish and a portion of the dish was left out, and only brought out when we had asked for it. The fish dish was changed to a different fish (seabass) last second, which was different from the menu. We thought to ourselves that maybe we had unreasonable expectations, but we dined at Alma the day after, and the experience was night a day. If you are in Lisbon and want to try one of the two-star Michelin restaurants, PLEASE do yourself a favor and book Alma instead. Crazy considering the two restaurants are next door to each other.
Be the first to ReplyStunning restaurant well worth a visit.
Thanks to a cancellation, we were able to make it in for dinner. The staff was professional and attentive even though we came in after a day of running around Lisbon and definitely didn't fit in with the other stylish guests. Every dish was interesting, delicious and gorgeous. Lots of little touches and treats in between each course meant that we didn't leave hungry even though we didn't opt for the tasting menu but picked out some dishes ourselves. Definitely worth trying to get in.

Be the first to ReplyAre here last night while we're eating our way across
Are here last night while we're eating our way across Lisbon. I'd recommend the Evolution tasting menu, which is a little more costly, but such a fantastic way to get a real sense of the Portuguese cuisine experience. The restaurants stone walls and arches only add to the experience. The service was also distinguished and I'd recommend this as a "splurge" to experience both traditional and eclectic cuisine. Such a glamorous place.
Be the first to ReplyThis is a wonderful Michelin star restaurant experience.
We are a group of 4 adults and one 4 year old kid. First of all, this restaurant is extremely friendly to kids. My friend's daughter were gave out her paintings to the servers who served us, then she got a box of drawing pens, and the chef came out of the kitchen to meet her and took a picture. The food we had was amazing, most of the food are seafood, the main dish was duck. They were well presented, and the concept of the cooking ideas well delivered. The only thing I was not sure about was the squid ink ice cream. That was new to me, and maybe that was too new to me to accept. The dining area was spacious in side of several dome shape architecture. The architecture was pretty interesting. Overall, it was worth the price and the experience. Highly recommend this place!
Be the first to Reply4.50 stars. Belcanto is a much celebrated culinary
4.50 stars. Belcanto is a much celebrated culinary achievement in downtown Lisbon. Chef Jose Avillez has become rather legendary for his unique takes on Portuguese cuisine. My friends and I decided on the Chef's Table (which incidentally is located between two kitchen stations so be forewarned its a bit different than a typical Chef's table) and enjoyed a smorgasbord of culinary delights. At restaurants of this magnitude, you can expect many dishes to change over time. But there is one dish that has stayed on the menu since 2008 (with a hilarious name like the Goose that Laid the Golden Egg). To be honest, it was great but my favorite dish of the evening was a scarlet shrimp curry where the curry was made from scarlet shrimp heads. This was easily one of the most concentrated flavors I have ever experienced and quite possibly the best dish I have eaten anywhere. Other standouts included textured carrots, a sole dish in white curry, and a savory pork dessert served with leche de tigre. Was this journey as tightly focused and as inventive as a recent trip to the also well renowned Ocean Restaurant in Lagoa? Reasonable minds can differ. But this is a brilliant meal that showcases evocative flavors and presentations in a manner that only the best can master.

Be the first to ReplyI really wanted to love Belcanto but it didn't live up to
I really wanted to love Belcanto but it didn't live up to the rating or hype. We tried their Chef's Table menu (which is inaccurately named and described as being an in-the-kitchen experience - something the table next to us was fairly upset about too). The first half was very good and provided a lot of delightful moments. Then the second half felt like a general let down. Unfortunately for Belcanto, the reverse can have guests leave with a still positive impression (like A Ver Tavira will do) but this progression from excellent to disappointing had us leaving on a dull note. That said, the interior is beautiful and our general favorite courses seemed to pull from the Evolution Menu so I recommend coming if you're curious and trying that menu instead.
Be the first to ReplyBelcanto is beautifully and artfully designed.
The Interior design combined with their choice of dishware creates an exciting environment where you get to look forward to your next experience. Unlike many other high end restaurants, when leaving the place you'll feel very satiated if not very full. A three hour experience with many dishes of small and light to medium and hearty meals is well worth the time and the price. My review is missing one star only due to my own experience. After receiving a very nice and consistent service at Belcanto at the Chef's table with Jose Avilles present, which was a pleasure, the other couple got a slice of cake where my wife and I did not. One slice of cake at the end of the whole 3 hour meal was absolutely not a big deal but the feeling that this experience creates was "being left out". You go through the 3 hour meal with the other 2 people at the chef's table all at the same time but suddenly they get a slice of cake and you just have to watch! That seemed weird and kinda stole that last star from my review. Otherwise this was a very good experience.
Be the first to ReplyFantastic meal.
What an incredible experience by Chef Jose Avillez. We left stuffed but so very happy. To be honest, I wasn't quite please with Portugese food but Belcanto was the stand out meal of my Portugal trip. We did the standard tasting menu and everything was delicious from the wine recommendations to the amuse bouches to the main course. A few standouts include the butters, breads, and the garden of the goose that laid the golden egg (yes, extravagant name, but an extravagant dish requires this type of name). The only thing that was not great (and may have almost ruined the meal) was the weird sour orange gummy but because the rest of the meal was fantastic, I am choosing to let it pass. Please do make reservations at the World's #42 restaurant because it's just too good to pass up, especially at such a reasonable price for a 2* Michelin (at time of writing 175 euros).

#42 restaurant in the world.14 incredible moments by Chef Jose Avillez.Everything was spectacular, and our group of 5 all felt a similar, magical gastronomic experience. The wine pairing was perfect. It would be an incredible feat to describe the flavors of the dishes, but just know that each dish challenged our palette and let us explore unique flavors and textures. The whole experience was a performance, from the meticulous attention to service detail to the presentation of each wine pairing. Also, they accommodated one of our food allergies professionally and elegantly. Come prepared- aka- hungry. If you're in Lisboa, Portugal, this is the one to go to.

Be the first to ReplyHow anyone can rate this restaurant less than 5 stars beats
How anyone can rate this restaurant less than 5 stars beats me! ย We obviously had high expectations of Belcanto, and they were met!Starting with the service, while was attentive, but not pretentious or overbearing, to the ambience and then the food, it was all world class. ย We decided to do the a la carte as we felt that this would give us an opportunity to try out things we wanted to eat rather than the other way round. ย We were still served several of the palette cleansers. ย Of the palette cleansers, the tuna tatar was so good I wouldn't have minded making an entire meal of just that. ย While the presentation of some food items was worthy of a top 50 restaurant, some of the others were just a bit generic. ย However, that did not detract from the amazing flavors. ย I've eaten steak at the best steakhouses around (Heck, I'm from Texas, and that's one thing we know how to do right!), and can confidently say that this steak at Belcanto was the most perfect piece of beef I've ever had!

#42 restaurant in the world2* MichelinIs there anything else to say? Yes, yes there is.We were fortunate enough to get a reservation for the Chef's table (pricier menu), but the experience was absolutely amazing. You get an open view to everyone prepping your food, from the veggies and meats to the desserts. Everything from the wine list to the presentation of each dish to the service was outstanding and absolutely on point. I'll let my photos speak for itself, but this place is definitely one of the world's best restaurants and one that you should try to get a reservation for ASAP!
Be the first to ReplyBelcanto is rated as a 2-star Michelin restaurant.
While some of the courses in the tasting menu were delicious and inspired, the overall experience was disappointing. Service was spotty, the steak knives used for cutting the squab were dull (one had to be discarded), and some of the courses were mediocre. For the price and rating, this dining event was a poor value. If one is looking for fine dining in Lisbon, Fifty Seconds will not disappoint.

At one time a convent, later a men's club and now Lisbon's most highly awarded Restaurant Rua Serpa Pinto 10a carries a lot of history, but since 2012 it has been the home of Chef Josรฉ Avillez's Belcanto and a modern interpretation of Portuguese Cuisine. One of the country's two Michelin 2* kitchens, a visible space adjacent the dining room preparing two Tasting Menus daily, it is beneath vaulted ceilings that a meal at Belcanto begins quickly, an Elderflower Martini preparing and then cleansing the palate of a Steam Bun rife with deep-sea flavor.Arguably Chiado's most diverse Wine cellar, hazy Serra Oca well suited to several early bites, it was after consuming Duck and Chicken Liver that the Classic "Belcanto Menu" officially began with raw and cooked Carrots in nutty Milk and bright spots of Citrus.Bathed in light at lunch, with excessively proper service, housemade Bread arrived next in four styles, both Corn and Olive flawless alongside three Butters preceding Portuguese Prawns again in light Cream with melting spheres juxtaposing Caviar.Just 45 seats, only half filled on a Saturday, those seeking a signature will find such in "The Garden of the Goose that Laid the Golden Egg," its subtleties including an earthy linger and toasty notes that lead well to gently cooked Seabass in delicate Dashi.Technique-driven but decidedly "safe," Squab cooked just past rare seeing its natural flavor muted by Cinnamon-forward Sauce, Avillez's Nata comes savory with rich Custard that sets up well for an odd Dessert of Chocolate textures blacked out by Squid Ink.Tapping Chef Amรฉrico dos Santos for Pastry, "Sweet Egg Cream" actually quite sour, it is with a Dessert Napkin shaped as a sleeve that details of Avillez's childhood are revealed before concluding in a Sugar-coated Bola de Berlim.
Be the first to ReplyThe presentation is impeccable, as expected.
The service is good. The quality of the food is excellent; however, the dishes are underwhelming for the cost. The wine they recommended for us fell flat. I also told them that we were on our honeymoon so I was hoping for a small acknowledgement, but they once again fell short. Overall- we go to a lot of nice restaurants, so at the end we were expecting more from a place so highly regarded such as this one.
