Barney Greengrass New York Reviews from The Last Year
Absolute best food and service anywhere.
This place is an iconic institution. You must come here and eat. You will love it no matter what you order.
UWS staple.
Overpriced but great fish, blintzes, sandwiches. Would recommend for breakfast or brunch if you can get a table. The ambiance and service are... an experience. Don't expect a five star restaurant experience!
Had a nice breakfast here.
if you're in the area it's a New York institution that's been around since 1908 and yes, there was a real Barney Greengrass and they don't call him or his sons, "The Sturgeon King" for nothing. The best sturgeon, sable and lox around. Absolutely exceptional. An Upper West side staple, it's right on 86th and Amsterdam. Lines form everyday to get in. Here's a hint...go on Saturday morning before 10 and you'll get a table. Yes Saturday, trust me The food here is a special treat. The staff is efficient and really knowledgeable. Some restaurants it seems like the staff has never eaten there. Our server Sean or Table #12 as he referred to himself, was helpful and knowledgeable. Don't forget... Cash only... bring plenty. It's pricey but worth every penny.

Okay I'm usually not one to post but I'll say this, the price I payed for an average bagel with salmon and sturgeon is theft, and quite literally a joke. I'm all for paying $43 on something that's memorable but this was not. The name does not meet the expectation I was wanting. On the other note, salmon was really fresh.

Hmmm I can't believe I have to write this review but I have to. I used to love Barney Greengrass. Their food is some of the best Jewish deli food / smoked fish you can get in NYC. But I'm sad to report that I think they - or at least one of their waiters - is cheating their customers. We are there on a busy Saturday afternoon. Our waiter was crazy pushy, push selling expensive latkes (which are delicious but 16.50) and then... the bill arrived. It was total scribble, and it seemed way too expensive. We did the math of our order and it seemed $35 or $40 too high. I brought the bill inside to the owner. He told me to talk to the waiter. The waiter, not using a calculator or pen or pencil went through our order, found he had double charged me for an orange juice and then admitted that he didn't know why but yes I was right it was actually $35 too high. He made a small apology and said he didn't know how it happened. Well, we then saw three other tables come in and have the same interaction with the owner and with the waiter. I think something is fishy here! Barney greengrass, just because you're famous doesn't mean you can cheat your customers. SHAME ON YOU. BEWARE AND WATCH YOUR BILL, FOLKS.
Classy yet traditional, Barney Greengrass stands out as one
Classy yet traditional, Barney Greengrass stands out as one of New York's finest delicatessens. All fish cured in house and extremely fresh. The whitefish salad sandwhich was fantastic--they give you HEAPING piles of fish on thick, fluffy bagels. The service was a little rough around the edges which I feel may just be the standard for a popular New York establishment. Will definitely be returning
Never disappointed when I come here.
Hot corned beef on rye, black cherry soda. Perfect

During our recent visit to New York City, we decided to try Barney Greengrass. Not a very impressive visit to Barney Greengrass. I can't recommend it when there are SO many wonderful places to eat. Our waiter, David , was practically useless and WAY overcharged us. The gentleman (owner/manager) behind the register acted like he didn't know the prices of the items when I questioned the cost. He sighed and acted like the server didn't know what he was doing. Felt like a well rehearsed tourist trap thing. Food was fine but very expensive for what it was. Cash only. Spend your money with someone that cares about all their customers, even tourists. After more than 100 years in business, you guys better change your ways if you want another hundred years.
Great food!
It's a classic spot on the Upper West Side with somewhat brusque service and an air of self-importance. But once the incredible food arrived, none of that mattered anymore. I'll definitely be back.
Review on a return visit, having gone to the actual
Review on a return visit, having gone to the actual restaurant this time and sat down. Surprisingly I think the sweets here are stronger than the appetizing. Blintzes: best I've had in years. Cooked on the outside to the right thickness, and just a little sweet on the inside but not too much. Bagel itself: just fine. Average NYC bagel, and toasted. Not worth a journey for. Lox: still a bit too salty for my taste, I prefer Zabar's. Sturgeon: Excellent. I don't have as discerning taste as I do for lox (I ought to a more thorough comparison), but I found it delightfully subtle here and prefer it to their lox. Babka (took it home): a little on the greasy and salty side, but really rich and very nice gooey chocolate flavor.
The best bagels in the world.
Every bagel place should strive to achieve their taste and texture.i
Service is great, and the menu is HUGE.
You have to go a bit early and expect to wait in line. But so worth it.

Came here on a busy Sunday morning, and the wait was well out the door. Luckily, the line flows pretty quickly, and they have both outdoor and indoor seating. If you don't want to wait, you can also go in to order takeout, which is nice for those in a rush. There's a hustle about the place, so it feels very New York. If you're not a fan of feeling a bit pressured and rushed from your surroundings, it's probably not a great spot to dine at. We came for the bagels, but they got us with the Latkes. These were delicious fried potato+cabbage balls, and the apple sauce went surprisingly well with the food. This was a dish they advertised as they walked by us, and it was well worth it. I got the whitefish salad bagel and the nova scotia salmon. Both were excellent, but the salmon was slightly better imo. The texture was very different from what I had expected, a bit more similar to the rawness of sashimi salmon rather than the smoked salmon from other bagel shops. The flavors were excellent, but definitely a little pricey. I'd probably come back, but it won't be my regular bagel spot just because I don't think it's price-to-value is as high as other bagel spots. I do think they have great food tho. They are cash only, so keep that in mind.

Came here on a Sunday morning around 11am and only had a 30 minute wait. The service here is quick! It's a classic Jewish deli that specializes in smoked fish. My absolute favorite thing to get here are the Latkes which are not pictured because we ate them quick before the rest of our food could arrive. Bagels here are always good, but not the best in the city. Unfortunately the matzo ball soup just isn't up to par. The ball itself is good but the broth leaves something to be forgotten.
Overpriced
Barney Greengrass is legendary on the UWS. However, a takeout plain bagel with cream cheese and lox costs $22.86, which is outrageous! Be warned!!
Breakfast at historic restaurant
My wife and I stayed on the upper west side this week and decided to stop by Barney Greengrass for breakfast on Friday and we were not disappointed. I had eggs and salmon and my wife had a bagel with salmon and cream cheese. We both enjoyed our meals. The coffee was very good and the service was excellent. Will be back.

It's wonderful to still find authentic restaurants serving the same delicious food for over 100 years!! Love this place!! Go visit‼
If you are looking for a fancy place for breakfast or lunch.
This is not the place. You want some old school jewish food. This is the place. When you walk in and smell the bagel oven and see the hustle and bustle. You feel transported to a different time. You might have to wait a few minutes for a table. But the payoff is worth it. Lox bagel cream cheese with onion tomato and capers. Second to none. Potato pancakes was a cross between a latke and knish. So yummy. A bit pricey. But for once in a while. Its worth it
Great place, it has the best Nova around.
Been going to BG for a very long time. Service is fine. Seems like you are bothering the staff when you ask for coffee . They really are known for their food! I have had breakfast there when celebrities are eating. It is a landmark restaurant on the UWS!

Wow, it's been a minute sine my last visit to one of my favorite OG places on the UWS. And my has it fallen from my favorites list. It's still the same OG vibe but the service has gotten much worse. However, service aside, Barney's was always a bit of a classic grumpy NY vibe place, but the food preparation has really taken a downward swing. I ordered a basic toasted bagel with the works. It came to the table looking like a 10 year old made it. Absolutely zero love involved. A total mess. I should have taken a picture. Sadly we won't be coming back here for a while. Only giving it a three star review because it's still such a landmark. Would have been two stars. Down from my original five star :(Ciao Barney's. It's Nosh Bagel on Broadway for me now.

Came here for breakfast with coworkers and was pleasantly surprised. Ive never tried cream cheese and lox and didn't think I'd be a fan of it. We came here the service was friendly we started with latkes and then I got a bagel with cream cheese, smoked salmon and sturgeon it also had onions tomatoes and capers on it. Everything was delicious
Good food, not inexpensive, but warning - cash only.
Arrived early-ish on a Sat. morning to eat in. Ask for the side room or they'll try to sit you in the deli area. Was told this is where to go for bagels & lox - & do they have a selection! Now latkes are not on the menu, but make sure you get a plate - so good. The salmon was fresh, my eggs were done just right, & the bagel was very NY. Friend got the platter, & aside from the "sides" I didn't see much size difference. There are other fish available as well. Good server, explained everything well. Biggest complaint - didn't see anywhere that it was cash only. And it's not cheap. We made it work, but a forewarning would have been nice.
Overrated and overpriced
Came here for lunch. There was a line outside but was seated after not too long. Very crowded seating area. Waiter was very engaging. The food was nothing special and so overpriced. $106 for a sandwich, 2 bagels, latke and 2 coffees. The whitefish salad was terribly bland. I would not go again. Ever.
Breakfast bagels.
Great breakfast bagels. Good coffee. Excellent service and entertainment provided by David! Seems to be much-loved by locals.
Great pastrami Rueben
We all wanted to try a pastrami Reuben sandwich so headed to Barney's after a morning exploring. Great service and very charming and authentic place. Reuben was full of pastrami and cheese and very tasty!

Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.

When it says working on bid, it means there are people looking to fill it.
