It is simply the best in service, ambiance, food, and history of Soho. Love this place.
Haven't been here in years.
Forgot how great it is! SoHo classic. Food, service, and wine selection are fantastic!
I didnt listen...the food was BAD afterall
I'm suspicious of the positive reviews. Is it me or do many seem to be written in a similar style? I read all the bad reviews for the food, but really wanted to see for myself. Some diners I've been to have better steak than this famous bistro. The halibut had a strange taste that I could not identify. It was not good. I've eaten $45 halibut in several other places that was delicious, and Balthazar is not one of them. The dessert wasn't terrible. The Boucherie restaurants in the city are much better. I looked around the restaurant, bustling with people who don't seem to care that the food is mediocre. They must be there for the name and the busy atmosphere.
Another day exquisite meal After show decompression ritual.
Fleur de pedesclsux 2014 ( a delicious pauillac decanted of course)... terrine de fois gras.... Steak frites... Bibb salad..: Great restaurant
Balthazar NY
The most busiest of The Mcnally bros restaurants empire. Not sure if the bros are actually still working together but that’s what we’ve been calling them for decades. These guys ran NYC restaurant scene forever. They had a spot in every neighborhood up and down Manhattan. Some have gone and some stayed running for decades but Balthazar is for sure their reigning champ. Most of their restaurants feel like a French Bistro and they’re pioneers of doing that. They all have patina and authentic feel. The only reason I gave it 4 instead of 5 is because it’s really busy there. You feel a little bit like your part of a herd. But they probably do over $100k a day in sales so I can understand.
The vibe and service is really great.
The food is good, and you won't regret going. The French Onion soup was a little on the salty side. In fact everything was heavy on the salt. If I were to go there again I'd ask for no salt.

I came here with a friend recently on a rainy weekend for lunch. We were told it would be an hour+ wait to get inside seating, so we opted for the much more available outdoor seating. There are tents and some heaters, but definitely still some draft cause the tent flaps are left open. Not super ideal. We got the steak tartar as an appetizer, and it was ok. Definitely over-seasoned with mustard and horseradish, to the point where the actual beef flavor itself was mostly hidden away. I got the chicken paillard. Again, it was just ok. The sauce didn't bind well to the chicken, so the chicken felt under-seasoned. The chicken was cooked well overall and was quite juicy and tender, but at times, it almost felt a bit on the rarey side, with a snap and crunch to it that I don't expect from my chicken. The best part of this dish was honestly the caramelized tomatoes. Provided a super sweet juicy pop. Service was fairly average; it took us quite a while to get served + to get our check. Given that it's certainly not cheap, probably won't be back again!
Balthazar is a trendy NY restaurant that celebrities go to.
In the popular 90s show "Sex and the City" they modeled a restaurant after Balthazar in one of their episodes but called it Balzac instead. It's hard to get a reservation here which was featured in the episode. I had to make my reservation a month in advance, and I was able to snag a 5pm table. A-list celebs like the Kardashians, Leonardo DiCaprio, Meryl Streep, Anna Wintour etc. have all dined here. They also supposedly banned James Conden from the restaurant haha. Service was excellent from the moment we walked through the door. Their host and servers were all nice and friendly. They serve bread and butter upon seating. I ordered Steak Frites and a glass of wine and both were perfection. My cousin ordered the Porcini Risotto, and he liked his food as well. It was such an enjoyable meal and definitely lived up to the hype. I'm so glad we got to dine here, when we were planning our NY trip Balthazar was at the top of our list of places to visit. If you get the chance, try them out when you're in NYC.
Sheer delight from start to finish.
We snagged a lunch reservation here to go with a friend after a morning of galavanting around some old haunts to celebrate a major marriage milestone. Balthazar was the perfect place to duck into to escape the rain. The ambience is just how a French bistro should be: buzzing, charming, and sexy. Our table was at the end of a center row right by the seafood station, and it was snug but with a nice view of all The Important People. So much botox abounded! The apricot sour is A+. We all just shared dishes starting with half a dozen wonderfully fresh oysters, and it never ceases to warm our hearts watching our six year old slurp one and then put the shell back down, correctly!, on the ice. Appetizer joy! The bibb salad is incredible: fresh leaves layered with a tangy and oniony vinaigrette that wets the beak perfectly. The fruit salad our kiddo insisted on is a joke price-wise, but at least nothing was slimy or mealy. For mains, it was steak frites, of course, mushroom ravioli, and a croquet madame. Listen, is this the best plate of steak and fries that you've ever had in your life? We'll spare you the suspense: no it is not. But is the meat not tough and cooked to the right temp? Yes. Are the fries good? Yes. If you're expecting fireworks, you'll be disappointed, so be happy with the decent plate of food in front of you and count your blessings that you get to eat in this NYC establishment. The ravioli was nice, very mushroom-forward, so no complaints, but again, you can't have the same expectations as some of the elite pasta places. The croquet madame, though, that was on the level of ones that we've had at places like Tartine and even in France. Divine--great bread, ideal ratios...just so, so good. For dessert, we all shared the berry pavlova (to have something "light") and the meringue was as it should be, with a nice zippy sauce and fruit, so what more can you ask for after a big meal? Service is fast and furious, but you get what you need. The bill is insane, but we were expecting it and we were buzzed and happy, so...so what? Four happy stars. A classic NYC meal to cheers to ten years. Will we be back? Maybe, maybe not, but we're certainly glad that we came.

Have been here many, many times over the years without a reservation and the food was always great. Went today after 5pm as a walk in for two....hostess said no tables available. There were visibly about 8 to 10 tables empty. I understand people have reservations but why are NYC restaurants becoming this ridiculous, hard to get thing lately? There is so much competition in that area, why turn people away? We went somewhere else and had a really good burger. It's not just you Balthazar, it's everywhere, but it creates this hype that real NYers don't buy. Why are you putting people outside in a hut when there are empty tables inside? How long do you hold a table if a reservation is late? Was everyone on the late train this evening? There is zero wiggle room for an accomodation. Next time I won't attempt to walk in but will instead walk on to the next one.
Good spot to grab a light breakfast.
I had the croissant and little solider and my beau had tartine. Nice, chill vibe.
Always find a way to accommodate us.
This level of service of has consistently been top. Even when there's no room, if you're patient and kind, they find a way. Food is your typical bistro fare, ambiance is always thriving in the best way, service always on point. They want you to enjoy yourself. You can see it's important to them and we see that and feel that. An institution. You've been great to us always Balthazar.
See you soon hopefully!
Friend and I decided to go to Balthazar for brunch. Great way to wake up and start the day. The food was absolute delicious. Staff was friendly and fast. Atmosphere great. Got plenty refills on the coffee. Definitely will come back.
Bad Experience.....
Is the second time in a months I came and ate at the bar with European friend both time was a bad experience. After the appetizers we ordered a Steak it was over cooked, looks sad on the plate and unfortunately it was the same for the burger overcooked and sad as well. On top of that the service was not as expected and took a very very long time to received food...The barthender gave us a poor explanation on the delay. I'm sorry but for the Balthazar I know for years this is unacceptable.......BAD EXPERIENCE. Hope this will help to improve.
Dissapointed
Food was average and prices overrated. A noisy ambiance and after one meal was returned the waitress simped pissed off that we didn’t gave her the “suggested” tip of 18,5%!! Still she did receive a good amount but didn’t even say thank you or goodbye. We will never return.
🤢🤢this place is awful
This place is laughable, absolutely terrible. If you have ever been to Paris or even Canada you will realize this place is absolutely a joke. I’m embarrassed I feel for the marketing scheme that it is.
Celebration time!!
Fabulous birthday celebration dinner! Every morsel was delicious & the service was absolutely great! We had one guest with severe food allergies & they catered to her needs perfectly! The attention to detail was well above & beyond! Highly recommend…Thank you!!!!
Nothing great about it
Super noisy, waitstaff looked miserable. Food was mediocre at best

It depends how far out in the future your reservation is. If you posted a reservation hat was 2 months out, it’s unlikely many people will view your reservation. It could also be that your reservation is just not desirable.
