This place was so good! I'd never been to a Michelin Star
This place was so good! I'd never been to a Michelin Star restaurant before, but my boyfriend and I were visiting New York and decided to give it a try. So glad we did! We arrived slightly early and were greeted at the door and shown our way in. It's definitely an unsuspecting location, but that was part of the fun! We were seated at a U-shaped table that looked into the kitchen. There were 4 chefs and a sommelier that greeted us. My friend chose to have the wine pairing but I stuck to water. I did mark on the survey that was sent to us that it was our anniversary but there was not mention of it dinner... maybe they don't do anything on anniversaries but I think it's strange that they would have that as an option and not do anything. The service was AMAZING. The servers and sommelier were so attentive and even folded my napkin for me when I was in the bathroom. During the main course we also spilled some sauce on our place mats and they were very quick to wipe it up. Each dish was served to us by one of the chefs and they explained what we were eating. There were 11 total and mg favorites were the king crab, scallop, wagyu, and passion fruit. I personally didn't love the squab, but that's just my personal taste and it seemed like others really enjoyed it. We finished the dinner with a pour over coffee that they made directly in front of us and was so delicious. My only complaint is that all the desserts were fruity and I wished there had been something more savory. If you're thinking about coming, do!! We loved our time here and hope to come again when we're in the city.
Be the first to ReplyThe overall experience was underwhelming.
Out of 11 courses, only the carviar on custard and crab ravioli in broth were memorable. Base on the value, food and service, I would not recommend it
Be the first to ReplyWow! I could say so many great things about Atera.
This fine dining experience was spot on. Not only did the 13 course meal and 6 drink pairing exceed my expectations but the service and ambiance was spectacular. Definitely recommend

We were so excited to book our reservation one month in advance and I felt robbed of the money we paid upon leaving the restaurant. Booked a trip to NY and dined at Atera back in November to celebrate my birthday and our anniversary. Unfortunately, the food did not blow us away for $300+ per head. I was expecting molecular gastronomy to be integrated into the food but we did not see any of those techniques executed. Each dish was also quite small, and tended to have much of the same flavor profile consisting of egg roe and caviar. I actually felt a bit sick to my stomach because almost every dish had these elements and it was extremely fishy and salty. For 2 michelin stars, I was very confused by the menu and felt hungry the entire time. On the service front, it was pretty great, and it was cool to sit at the bar and watch the chefs work. However, I felt uncomfortable and pressured by the mixologist/sommelier's behavior when I told him I was not drinking alcohol that night. He asked me at least 3-4 times over the night if I would consider trying something from the non-alcoholic cocktails list, which I declined politely each time. The other thing that sticks out is the vibe. I thought it would be a bit more comfortable and casual environment, but it actually felt somewhat stiff and the service, although courteous, was robotic. We were also sat next to a couple who made me a bit uncomfortable, as they were talking to us about their many homes across California, C-level executive jobs, and extravagant travels. As a student who had saved up for this trip and meal, it turned me off. Just a note that the environment was somewhat stuffy. I really think we would have enjoyed a nice meal for cheaper at a steakhouse, or Gramercy tavern, Carbone, etc there are so many better options in NY. We actually much preferred our $69 omakase meal the next night.

Atera turned my birthday into an extraordinary experience! The cozy ambiance and personalized menu added a special touch, making the evening truly memorable. The dishes were a delight, each paired perfectly with exquisite wines. The service was impeccable - attentive and knowledgeable, enhancing our dining experience. Atera is a gem in NYC for anyone seeking a blend of warmth, sophistication, and culinary excellence. Highly recommend for a special occasion or a treat-yourself night out!

This two star Michelin joint in Manhattan has all the makings of being an all star, but slightly misses the mark. The location is interesting. Tucked inside the lobby of a medical building hides this beautiful space. A total nod to old New York. Super romantic! The staff is attentive and very helpful. The wine list is extensive and solid. They also offer a mocktail menu. As for the food...everything is good and the kitchen is on point, but very little left me wanting to rush back. I think that is the issue. In a town full of amazing restaurants, for this price, there are better options. That being said the stars were the trout roe, the caviar (two raw dishes) and the squab. I would be curious to revisit. Maybe this menu wasn't the one for me. Either way it was very good.
Be the first to ReplyI had one of the best culinary experiences ever here.
Do yourself a favor and do the wine pairing if you can, I tried some amazing wines. My favorite dish was probably the trout roe with foie gras, but it was super hard to pick a favorite The flavors were so on point and everything got better throughout the tasting. I tried one of the mocktails which may have been better than an actual cocktail. I felt like it was a very laid back tasting experience, and also super intimate.

We went to Atera to celebrate my husband's birthday, and we left feeling very disappointed. A lot of the dishes were good, but nothing blew us away, and we both left really hungry (which is not something that ever really happens to us). The portions were not an appropriate size for the # of courses in this tasting menu. The service was good and the staff was nice, but this experience was in no way worth the money. The reason I am giving Atera a 1 star is because one of the "snacks" (the Æbleskiver with comte, truffle) severely burned my mouth and left me with large, visible welts and burns on the inside of my mouth. Even a day later, I am still in severe pain and struggling to eat because of the burns. I have been to many, many Michelin star restaurants and have never once experienced this situation before. I will definitely never be back here and wouldn't recommend it.
Be the first to ReplyWhat a strange evening.
Saved up to test myself. The moment your through the door you are straight in and sat at the counter. No area for a pre drink or to get your bearings. With approximately a dozen dinners it's the sommelier that is the main point of contact. He was polite friendly and knowledgeable. I didn't go with the wine pairing but opted for a cocktail and asked him to suggest a few wines for the meal. With every wine comes an explanation which is totally understandable but guess what I just heard you say it to both people next to me. This means I feel for you having to say the same thing several times plus I also heard it. Then there is the glaring error of the entire experience. Who chooses the music ?? How would anyone think that Phil Collins at quite a high volume is enhancing the ambiance in any way. Essentially like an 80s early 90s quite loud play list totally threw off the vibe. The food. Lots of beautifully crafted small bites. The stand out the bite wrapped in crispy seaweed was amazing. Half way through I was craving a really solid plate to get my teeth into a lot of gels mouses and emulsified sauces , some incredible flavors but would have happily had less small bites the inclusion of one larger portion. The desserts where incredible . The servers did their best to puncture the somewhat austere atmosphere created by the decor and the somewhat clinical vibe of service. Suggestions . Sort the music out absolutely dreadful. Find ways to lighten up the experience and empower your staff to make it a warmer more personal journey.

Had an amazing experience at Atera last night; I had been wanting to dine here for years and I finally took the plunge, and boy am I glad that I did! Every single course was intricate in plating as well as taste, with a few absolute standouts in the crab ravioli and squab dishes, as well as the grapefruit ice cream dessert. Service was of course impeccable as to be expected of such an establishment. A chef patiently explained each course as it was presented, and our water glasses and tea cups (for a non alchoholic beverage) were always filled!

Befitting it's two-star reputation, Atera was inarguably one of the best if not the best food I've ever eaten. It is a unique dining experience, but the service and the experience eating at the Chef's counter are impeccable. Watching Masters of their craft carefully execute complex dishes was a treat. The Sommelier, with outstanding wine knowledge, was delightful to chat with. His wine parings were my favorite part of this experience. They told us not to count the number of courses (but it was 14 for our meal though the menu changes frequently so expect something different each time) and I felt full over the two hour experience. For those interested in a fine dining experience I would highly recommend considering Atera.
Be the first to ReplyOne "server" can ruin a night in a matter of seconds.
Read customer reviews here and on yelp, as it seems everyone is talking about the same guy for the past whatever years. Can't even remember what the menu was anymore. Establishments like this and the menu are seriously a dime a dozen in Manhattan. Unlucky experience? No. Sorry to the Chef, but New Yorkers...don't waste your time and money here, NOT worthy of the michelin stars. (***Especially parents, this place does NOT allow you to access your phone for a few seconds to check on a little toddler at home -- even after paying the ridiculous bill and everyone leaving...only left a tip because one staff member that made it somewhat enjoyable) As you can see, I don't review places...but that shows how horrible it was that I'm on here. Even the lovely couple next to us had to give a few comments.Cliff notes:Food - MehService - TrashAmbience - Obnoxious music suited for a bar in over Hells Kitchen. Tip: If you're a real critic of the full dining experience, read the reviews sorted from low to high ratings.

5: While in town, we were able to check out Atera for dinner - we had made advance reservations, and we were excited to check out the chef's tasting menu. Our evening consisted of:+Lobster - with tomato and basil+Aebleskiver - with crab, comte, and lime+Kaluga Caviar - with custard and bonito+Iberico Ham - with tuna, onions, and peppers+Langoustine - with squash and citrus+King Salmon - with spinach, daikon, and roe+Squid - with foie gras, shrimp, and scallions+Short Rib - with sunchoke and mushrooms+Duck - prepared with pear, carrots, and balsamic+Apple - with hazelnut and vanilla+Chocolate - with currant and thyme+Lemon - with cream and chocolate+Olive Oil - citrus+Sorghum - with peanutsNote that dietary restrictions and food allergies will not be accommodated.Overall, the food was okay - I think there were a few dishes that we had enjoyed (such as the Kaluga Caviar), but the rest were just mediocre (the flavors just weren't tasty and/or they were bland). It also seemed very seafood-heavy, which is perfect for seafood lovers, but not for those who are looking to get a wide range of proteins.Service was good, but there are many waitstaff that rotate through in presenting and clearing the dishes. What was a bit confusing was that even though we were sat at the counter with the open kitchen, most dishes seem to be prepared at another kitchen instead. I thought that kind of defeated the purpose of seeing the chefs prepare and plate the dishes.+seafood-heavy tasting menu+most items not prepared in the open kitchen

A solid 4 stars! I went as a solo diner and had an amazing time dining at Atera. The seating is chef's table so you get to sit and watch the chef's prepare each dish, so it's like diner and a show. The tasting menu had about eight courses, all of which were really good. My personal favorites were (i) the steam egg and caviar; (ii) the iberico ham; and the stuffed wing. The ham especially stood out because conceptually the ham and he tuna shouldn't work but somehow it all came together. There was one pasta dish however that just didn't work. There were some circles that kind of tasted plastic. I'm still not sure what it was meant to be. One of the things that really made Atera stand out to me was their temperance pairing. As someone who isn't a big wine drinker, having this as an alternative was great and each of the drinks presented were really unique like the beet drink meant to replace the red wine, the opening non-alcoholic champagne and the smoked ginger which had a smokey rich taste. The service was also excellent. The staff was super friendly yet professional and really enhanced the dining experience. So why only 4 stars? Because I was pretty hungry after I left. I don't think at that price tag you should be thinking what's an appropriate amount of time to wait until you can eat again shortly after leaving but that's how I felt. Overall, a pretty good meal, but definitely not one I feel the need to repeat again.
Be the first to ReplyCame here with my wife to celebrate Valentine's Day early.
The restaurant is mostly bar seating and the service was very good. Overall the menu is very safe. All the food was "fine dining warm" and borderline underseasoned. It's almost like they're afraid to push the envelope and offend anyone so they just stay in the lanes. The most memorable dish was the peeky toe crab puff with caviar. It's also a bit weird that the kitchen does minimal cooking so they're just staring at you eat for the majority of the time. I think for the price, I expected more. The other annoying thing was the single bathroom that everyone had to wait in line for. At one point there were 4 ahead of us. Atera is a good restaurant. I personally would not come again but there's nothing inherently wrong with them. There just wasn't any wow factor that would make me want to go again.
Be the first to ReplyThe chef table was very intimate seating arrangement.
It's around the kitchen, so you can see the chef's prepare each dish which was a nice experience. It is a little weird at first because so many people (staff) are standing around staring at you. There is only room to fit about 14 people total for dining. The atmosphere was nice but very dark. There is only one bathroom and it is very dark as well. I will say it took forever to order and get my first drink, with so many people standing around you would think service would be impeccable. Not that service was bad, it just didn't live up to the standard I thought it would. Other than that everyone was very nice and the wine sommelier Dan was very knowledgeable and friendly. Now for the food, everything was delicious and had a beautiful presentation. I also added the wine pairing which was expensive but definitely worth it! I will definitely come back again!
Be the first to ReplyExpensive Michelin star restaurant.
Good customer service, intimate chef counter experience. Food was ok. Nothing memorable. Heavy on seafood and interesting fusion combination. Portions are small. We and the customers next to us all agreed that we were not full after the meal.

Food was delicious (the scallop and lemon verbena, salmon, and egg custard with caviar dishes were probably my favorites) but also somewhat forgettable. Service here, while far from bad, was not to the standard that I would expect from a restaurant of this caliber and price range and not nearly as warm or friendly as what I've experienced at other fine dining places. Still a good restaurant, just not a great one.
Be the first to ReplyDisappointing and uncomfortable experience.
When you first enter, there's 10 wait staff and chefs just standing around watching you while you get seated. The atmosphere was not relaxing. The dining area was one room and felt quite cold. There were scattered quiet conversations going on and I felt that we had to whisper because the room got so quiet at times. The place felt uptight and a bit pretentious. I understand its a Michelin star experience but the experience did not feel accessible or welcoming.I was showing my boyfriend a short video on my phone and was asked to turn off my video (reasonably so) and I did. A few minutes later, I was taking a photo of the course and the same waiter, older gentleman with ponytail, came over and said "I'm going to have to ask you to turn off your phone hope you understand...", and I told him I was just taking pictures and he apologized for mishearing. The situation was a bit awkward and strange since they were playing loud guitar music in the background. The best and only memorable dish was the steam egg and caviar, the rest of the courses were under seasoned, uncreative, and lacking in presentation. Also don't understand why there is an open kitchen when most of the ingredients were prepped in a different kitchen. Given the price ($300+) and reputation of the place, it was very underwhelming.

Where do I start? Small seating area around the kitchen and one group seating in the back. I pretty much tried all the mocktails and woah. My drinks are way better and more creative than the regular alcohol drinks without a doubt. My absolute favorite, that I wish I could drink an indefinite amount of, was the smokey drink. They smoke it!! I loved seeing them prepare my drink because there is just so much involved. It seems way more complex than a food dish. All of that work to create such a unique drink. I'm amazed. They even stamped their cubed ice with their restaurant name. It's the little things like this that catch my eye. Moving onto the creativity of the dish. The one that stood out the most was the ramen noodles that were not your typical carb noodles. It tasted exactly like ramen. But it's not! It's actually squid. Wahhh. I know. I was in disbelief. To even imagine something like this. I avoid carbs on a daily unless I go out to eat but having protein ramen that tastes exactly like regular carb random. Wow. I'm impressed. As for the rest of the dishes, amazing. The first few dishes were my favorite for the unique flavors. Only downside is we left starving. Maybe I tend to fill up on the free carbs in between dishes when I go fine dining or the complimentary dishes not on the menu. Bathroom is dark and only has one. Staff were nice. Very quiet here otherwise. Dress code is nonexistent. There was a huge range of clothes from super causal sweat pants and sneakers to very dressy. You can't go wrong with anything. If you go for your bday, they add a candle to your dessert. That's about it for personalization. Overall, good meal.

A friend who spends a great deal of time in NYC recommended Atera, The staff are really friendly and personable, willing to engage in side conversations. When we first arrived we felt the ambience was dry, slow, and boring. It was a little awkward with how everyone, including the cooks, were so quiet. It was very quiet and the kitchen and seating area are combined. The horseshoe bar/dining is lovely though and we hope that whatever new countertop Chef selects is a contrast to the dark surround. Once the playlist came on, we were so surprised and happy. We like fo w dining in a fun atmosphere. There was a mix of 80's rock and rap. The food is wonderful as well as the service. We had our 15 year old daughter with us and they offered a non-alcoholic drink pairing that we ended up piggybacking off of (with alcohol) and while the staff explained each dish, it seemed like they weren't used to anyone listening or asking questions. I wish they would slow down and spend more time on telling us about each course. Mike was, by far, our favorite server and we loved his playlist! Will definitely be back!
Be the first to ReplyOne of the best dinners I've ever had.
Each dish was a perfect blend of complex flavors, texture, and tenderness. Wine pairings further enhanced the experience and the mocktails were equally impressive. Service was excellent, my only minor complaint was we felt a bit rushed through the dishes. I get that there was another seating coming up, but having a few extra minutes would've allowed us the chance to further appreciate the experience. Waygu Beef w/Shrimp Broth & Snap Peas was incredible, King Salmon was phenomenal. Cucumber, Scallops & Lemon Verbena was my favorite.
Be the first to ReplyOne of the best meals I've ever had (.
..so far). Ever dish was delicious and magical. It was a meal filled with savory bites filled with umami. The duck was cooked so perfectly it almost tasted like foie gras. Other standouts were an egg custard and a uni and truffle bite.

It was an absolute amazing experience! Food was beyond great. You can tell that they put a lot of thoughts and creativities into it. The environment is also wonderful if you are looking for an intimate place but also having a view of what is going on in the kitchen. I highly recommend this place and I have doubt it will eventually become a three-Michelin star restaurant!
Be the first to ReplyI loved the set up of this restaurant.
Everyone has a great view of the kitchen. It's like watching an orchestra perform, amazing! My favorite part of this dinner was the temperance tasting. I wish it wasn't going to be removed...sad for non drinkers like myself. Don't get me wrong I love a good wine tasting, however, there are some days I don't feel like having a drink and the temperance tasting was perfect. Dishes were really great as well. One of my favorites was the Wagyu dish, really delicious and tender. Would recommend and come back!
