Can't believe I've been sleeping on this place for this
Can't believe I've been sleeping on this place for this long. It's been saved in my list for years. Literally walking in I was getting Japan vibes. From the decor to the dark setting it was very familiar since I was just in Japan a week ago. Which definitely made me wish I was back. The service was good. They were quick to sit us down and take our order. Food came out without delay as well. We got the Tako wasa, chicken karage, and omurice. Tako wasa kind of stole the show. It was this inexpensive appetizer that packed a lot of flavor and even had a nice wasabi kick. The omurice was made perfectly. The Demi-glacé sauce was delicious and worked really well with the eggs. The karage was my least favorite but really good either way. Sake also wasn't all that expensive either. Esp the house sake. Overall would 100% return

Very cute spot with a cozy feel and delicious food! We shared the Omurice (with Tonkatsu +$10), Squid Legs, and Karage. You can upgrade your entrees with the side dishes for a complete meal, but sharing one entree with two small plates was the perfect amount for us. 1) Omurice with Tonkatsu - proof that simple is best! Buttery, sweet and bit tangy sauce with a fluffy egg and juicy, succulent Tonkatsu pieces. 2) Squid Legs - pleasantly surprised and didn't except to like the dish as much as we did! Perfectly crispy and seasoned and paired nicely with the aioli - prefect pairing with a draft beer. 3) Karage - lightly battered and resembled a taste like chicken teriyaki, but the horseradish-ish type sauce was a nice pairing to cut the sweetness of the Karage.
Be the first to ReplyCame here and tried the omurice set with added katsu.
Egg was cooked to perfection so well with the crispy katsu! The tiny side dishes were nice too. Be aware that the portions are on the smaller side, but good quality.
Be the first to ReplyA really sleek and classy izakaya in East village.
They've really nailed the retro classy vibe inside - absolutely love the decor. The menu isn't huge but everything we ate was tasty - especially the tonkatsu with curry. Miso soup that came on the side was also banging. Wide selection of sake and cocktails available.

First time trying a shrimp sandwich (ebi sanbo) but I loved it. It was balanced vegetables, protein and carbs including the sauce. Seating was available and the waiter gave really excellent service. Inside was very cozy. My friend came in and did some work on her computer before I came i.

The food was solid, but echoing some previous reviews, the protein portion of the "large plates" was ridiculously small. The curry was also a tad too watery for my taste. The Truffle Nori Fries tasted like McDonald fries with sprinkled nori, void of any hint of truffle. I still think that Tomi Jazz has the most delicious Japanese curry and J's Kitchen is a close second. Plus, both offer a generous amount of protein.

Cute restaurant and I liked the ambiance a lot, had the curry with chicken, the food was tasty, but the protein portion was pretty small considering the price -- for most of the meal I was just eating rice with curry sauce mixed in. (I forgot to take pictures, but now that I'm looking through the photos from other customers, it seems you'd get a bit more meat if you chose tonkatsu instead of chicken). I wish they had the extra protein option and I would've chosen that if given.

Aoi has great Japanese food, a cute atmosphere, and fair prices. They were recently recognized by the Michelin guide and I can see why! I came here with friends for dinner. All of their dinner options come either Ala carte or as a teishoku set for an extra $8. The teishoku items change daily, and there's a card at the table that says what today's teishoku includes. The portions were all very large, and we were stuffed after finishing our meals! I had the mentaiko pasta and it was huge and delicious. My friends come here semi frequently but this was my first time. I would definitely come back!

Heard a lot about this place and it was pretty good! The truffle nori fries are a MUST. It's so yummy and the flavor is just perfect. The curry meal is super good and flavorful, I would recommend getting a side of katsu. The omurice was also good but I think there's just too much sauce and made my stomach hurt a little after (it was hard to eat because there's so much house sauce). Overall, the taste is good and it is on the pricey side for the amount you get. I would come to try other dishes! The waiter was nice and the vibes there were also nice for a cute date! I would suggest reserving before going because there's not a lot of space for more than 2 people tables.

I've been to Aoi Kitchen about 3-4 times in the past 2 years, but every visit this place gets worse. Very first visit, i was BLOWN AWAY by how perfect crispy and flavorful their katsu/fried items were. From croquette to shrimp tempura to tonkatsu just heavenly!! But that is probably the only time i can compliment their food.I think Aoi is a cute place with friendly staff and they play cool lounge tunes but that's where all the positives end.I would not come back here again for food.I prefer Bar Moga. But hey, try for yourself.

A fantastic spot in the East Village that offers authentic Japanese food. I got the Pork Katsu Curry with miso soup and I swear I was transported right back to a JR station in Tokyo. The food was nice and hot, my katsu was crispy and flavorful too! The service was excellent and the decor and atmosphere were comforting. I would absolutely come back if I'm in the East Village and visiting the city.
Be the first to Replyfirst time trying omurice.
.the wait is around 30-40mins if more than 2 people.. the food is ok and I will return next time.

Small and cute eatery nestled in the East Village! I got the Katsu Sando and it did not disappoint! The bread was slightly toasted, plenty of meat, and the Egg Tartar sauce was creamy and delicious. Ordered for takeout and my food was ready on time - quick and easy service!
Be the first to ReplyThis place is my go to hidden gem.
The ambiance is dark and trendy, it transports you away from the city for a little bit. The music balances the look, the service is also super friendly. The food is simply well done. The flavors balanced each other, it's hard to stop eating. The chicken karage and the omurice are something else. Definitely stop by if you can and try this place out!

This was my first visit at Aoi Kitchen and I will DEFINITELY be back. The food here was very good and I can't believe I've been missing the ebi sando from from my life up until last weekend! The shrimp in the ebi sando was perfectly fried and the flavors really hit the spot. We also got the omurice tonkatsu set which was also very, very good. This was enough food to last us for two meals. The portions are decently sized.

Ordered the omurice meal set which comes with the omurice dish, some small dishes, miso soup, and small dessert. The egg on top is exactly what I expected, and the rice mixed with the sauce tastes great.-1 star for not having strawberry milk when we went.
Be the first to ReplyGreat curry, got some spice taste too it.
Nice ambiance. Excellent service. Great menu selection
Be the first to ReplySuch a cute place with delicious authentic Japanese food
Such a cute place with delicious authentic Japanese food and great selection of sake. Our party of two reserved one of the three enclosed heated houses for outdoor dining. It's cozy and well decorated with flowers and retro art. My friend ordered the omurice set and I ordered the tonkatsu curry set, with a carafe of sparking sake. Will certainly be back!
Be the first to ReplyLoved the food, service and atmosphere was unique.
It's a very chill and cozy vibe. Perfect to go right now during the winter months. This place will warm your bones.

I got the omurice set and loved it!! The sides were delicious, the omurice itself was amazing, and the restaurant decor was very vibey.

Cute ambiance and environment, pretty good food, good service.I got the Tonkatsu with curry, which was 3.5 or 4 out of 5. The rice, salad, miso soup were delicious. The curry was a smidge salty and the ends of the tonkatsu were a bit too hard (the meat was too thin). My friend got the tonkatsu sandwich which was delicious and 5/5. I wish I had gotten this instead. The chicken karrage (appetizer) was also good.I'd come back here again and get the tonkatsu sandwich!

Food was so good! Prices are not cheap (typical for Manhattan) but you get what you pay for. Three of us went to AOI for dinner and got: 3 appetizers, 3 rice dishes, and 3 drinks (beers not pictured). We finished all the food and we were definitely full after. Definitely check this place out for quality katsu rice dishes and omurice!!!
Be the first to ReplyIt was alright, was expecting more.
Maybe I'll go back to try something else on the menu. The mentaiko pasta presentation looks nice and taste is rich as expected from a creamy pasta. The spicy cod roe (the orange red stuff) gave a slight kick but it's probably not spicy at all those who live for the spice. It's great until after a few bites, I got overwhelmed and tired of the taste. It's a dish better to be shared with others. Wish they had something on the side to pair with the pasta as it was more expensive compared to elsewhere. No problem with the service. I do wish the lighting was brighter inside though I guess the darkness is suppose to be the vibe. There was a big group seated when I went who was rowdier than the music playing, just my luck.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing Food and Service.
I've come here for an Anniversary, a Work Dinner, and a Casual Dinner, and all times were great! The Omurice is very well done and I usually switch the Demi-Glaze for the Curry. Call me childish but the best part about it is cutting it down the middle and seeing the egg ooze out. The Soba and Inari are also worth trying. I will be returning again!
