What an amazing experience!
I needed a restaurant venue in which to propose to my girlfriend. I was faced either with proposing in a room full of people or renting some expensive private room. Then I found Ambra and met chef and owner Chris D’Ambro. He has such a special room at Ambra, and he was so accommodating. He set up the room before opening so I could be alone to make the proposal. Then we enjoyed the tasting menu at the chef’s table with wine pairing. The food was fantastic, the presentation was amazing, and the service was spectacular! In fact, we forgot the goodie bag that Chris prepared for us to take, and he came over the hotel he knew we were staying at and celebrating in the lobby with friends and family to bring it to us, which included a personalized printed menu of the night. They were fantastic! We will definitely return!

After reading all of the reviews, we were truly looking forward to the experience at Ambra. We had truly enjoyed our prior meal at Southwark - their sister restaurant. We were highly disappointed. There was nothing wrong with the meal, it was just wasn’t anything special. The wine pairing was highly recommended by our wait staff and, for the most part, the wines were rather pedestrian. The flavors were largely bland (both food and wine). Again, nothing wrong but nothing memorable either. At $400+ for a meal (including tax and tip), I would expect to be wowed. Not even close. Service was attentive but certainly not engaging. A bit standoffish.

Dined at Ambra a couple of weekends ago with another couple. I believe the restaurant does not take more than 4 people at time and I was lucky enough to be able to snag a pretty last minute reservation for 4 on a Saturday night. While we did wait for almost 30 minutes past our reservation time, the restaurant offered us a drink on the house, which ended up being very delicious. Keep in mind that they only serve beer or wine and not hard liquor. The decor is spectacular. It's so cozy and beautiful. Absolutely lovely, romantic and graceful. The service was also spectacular. The servers were all dressed to impress. Very attentive and very professional. The food however, was less than impressive. The dishes were breathtakingly beautifully. Arranged to perfection and placed in front of us at the same time. With that said, my husband and I mutually agreed that we were not impressed with the actual flavors. Between the two of us, we liked maybe 2 or 3 dishes out of 7. Some dishes were extremely under-seasoned and one was extremely salty. Flavor combinations in some dishes didn't make sense and when eaten together just cancelled each other out basically. Some on the other hand tasted bland and unoriginal. For $350+ for a couple I expected way more and thought of this experience as a disappointing one and will not be returning. But on a very last and positive note, the restaurant did call me a few days prior to find out of our food restrictions if any. I was impressed. Perhaps some of our restrictions (no pork, shrimp or salmon) took away from our experience, but I would imagine that a creative chef could work around this and still deliver amazing flavors.

Just had an amazing meal. 9 courses of bliss. Different flavors, textures, and presentations paired with the perfect wines. Little bites of tasty fish, seafood, meets and cheeses all prepared fresh with explanations. It was an event to be remembered in addition to a really great food. If you are looking for personal attention, atmosphere, and a truly memorable dinner, this is it.

The small bites are surprising and delectable, the wine pairings are spot on, the attention to detail is outstanding. I felt like I mattered here. A visit to Ambra makes a special occasion very special indeed. Plan to go hungry, and pace yourself; make sure to savor each bite. Also--it's QUIET. I could actually carry on a conversation without tinny, auto-tuned, crap pop music intruding on my little party. We are frequent guests at Ambra's sister restaurant around the corner, called Southwark--it's a marvelous pub with a terrific menu.

If you want to know where locals go who pride themselves on knowing where to find the best restaurants that are consistently outstanding and never disappoint, Ambra is the place. At ambra, food is art- beautifully and creatively presented with the best and freshest ingredients. It’s a small tasting menu only format that requires well placed trust in the chef. We’ve been their with other foodies and with pickier eaters and everyone is always blown away. Easily one of the best restaurants in Philadelphia; will not disappoint
Be the first to ReplyAbsolutely marvelous food! Treat yourself to a fabulous meal
We went on spec due to a nearby theater and were aware of the $80 prix fixe Degustation menu...and blinked a bit at the unpretentious but stylish small space. THEN the meal started. We were blown away. Every one of the dishes was excellent, and several sublime. (No point on food details, as the menu changes.) The wine list was excellent, with several of our less-known favorites from the Piedmont region. The service was excellent and personable (they had to accelerate a bit because the curtain was "only" two hours away). But we couldn't stop raving about the food. The dishes were very complex but not over-laden "precious"...all the flavors were balanced and played together well. The portions were just right -- maybe a good three-four proper bites per plate (enough to actually taste the food) and we were Goldilocks just right full at the end of the meal. We hope they do well...we'll be back with friends. [Ana-Maria Z...somehow not signed in]

Ate here for the first time last night. I have no idea why this restaurant is not on the Philly's best list. The food, which is a set tasting type menu that frequently changes, is absolutely sublime. It is small and blessedly quiet. So wonderful to actually be able to have a lovely conversation with friends. We had the wine pairing, which was lovely. The service was efficient and friendly. I rarely give five stars, but, well here it is.

Whar a wonderful dining experience! Multi-course prixe fixe dinner with wonderful wine list. Great ambience. Warm wooded decor enhanced with classical jazz which I loved. Each course stood on its own as a palate-tantalizing treat, filled with so many tastes paired together by the obviously talented chef. The server was knowlegeable about each dish and the wines offered. This is a special venue for a special evening.

My husband and I went to Philly for a long weekend and wanted a nice dinner for our last night. The meal was by far the best meal I have ever had. Excellent quality food, wine and service.

It's easy to miss the doorway of this quiet 16 seat restaurant, look for the large wooden door and be sure to watch your footing upon entering as there is an easy to miss step up. Ambra has an intimate dining space (3 four-top tables & 2 tables for couples) with a rustic and soothing decor. They only serve a 8-9 nine course tasting menu ($82) and it is wise to notify them when making your reservation of any allergies or food preferences. While they can accommodate vegetarians, they cannot provide vegan meals at this time. Service was warm, professional and informative. We started with a delicious white vermouth apertif, followed by a chilled seafood presentation, Scripelle in brodo, Sweet potato gnudi, a pappardelle inspired by cheesesteaks, a smoked trout cannoli, and finished with a small piece of pork with swiss chard and morel mushrooms. Two desserts to finish, a rhubarb petit four and an affogato made without espresso. The food was good, the flavors interesting. Not every dish was a home run (that cheesesteak pasta was definitely our favorite) and there seemed to be a lot of one- note flavors throughout the courses. All in all, perfect for a special occasion or a date night. I recommend getting the wine pairing if possible to go with your meal as the flavor profiles are so different in each course.
