🙂 4/5 - Great hotel in a city that wasn't crying for an Aman

Aman Tokyo is a wonderful hotel - quite possibly the best luxury property in a city that's teeming with top-notch options. And therein lies the "problem," if you will. There are TWO Four Seasons (Marunouchi and the brand new Otemachi, just a few blocks away from Aman), a Mandarin Oriental, Shangri-La, Ritz-Carlton, Park Hyatt, Suiran, Palace Hotel, Shangri-La, Andaz... not to mention upper middle class hotels like Grand Hyatt, Okura, Imperial, New Otani and Intercontinental. And, Tokyo is an extremely safe city and it's pretty easy to get around. So... what was the purpose of an Aman in Tokyo? We stayed in a Corner Suite room, which offers a full 121 square meters of living space, a combo living room/dining room, and a separate bedroom with its own sitting area. The Suite also had a master bathroom with twin sinks, and a huge bathing area with a massive bath and separate shower. There is also a "secluded" work area (the alcove can slide shut if you want privacy) with another toilet area just adjacent to it. And, since it was a corner suite, we had sweeping views of Tokyo... unfortunately, our view was of the North and Northeast, rather than the West side that has great views of the Imperial Palace and Gardens, the Shinjuku skyline, and (on a clear day) Mt. Fuji. Maybe next time. Needless to say, the room was comfortable and tastefully furnished, with muted earthly tones (i.e. not too garish) that exuded an air of warmth and comfort. As others have mentioned, the lobby is a beautiful place. Super high ceilings, and floor to ceiling glass with incredible views of the city gives a wow factor that few city hotels can match. Aman Tokyo also has a rather large pool (at least one that's indoors within a high rise) and an elaborate spa facility. Basically, this property has everything that's expected of a small luxury property with amenities that are comparable to hotels with much larger room counts. We had dinner at Arva, the property's Italian restaurant. Good but not great. Not surprising, given that Aman is not renowned for the quality of its food & beverage offerings (a week spot for the brand.) We also had Japanese breakfast delivered to our room. This was much better, although not any more impressive than what's served at competing luxury properties in the city. As a luxury hotel in Tokyo, there's not much to find fault with Aman. It's just that Tokyo was not crying for yet more luxury choices; the Aman magic lies (or used to lie) in its ability to either be far superior to any other option (not the case here), exists in an underserved luxury locale (Kyoto was definitely the case before Four Seasons, Ritz-Carlton and Park Hyatt came along), or provides a unique experience in a remote location (Amangiri, Aman-i-khas, Amanjiwo, Amankora.) In other words, if Aman is to invest in new properties, I would rather have them amaze us in a place that would be transformed by its presence.. think Pantanal, Uyuni Salt Flats, Samarkand/Khiva/Bukhara, Cappadocia, Petra/Wadi Rum, Quito. And even in Japan, the Fuji Five Lakes area, Hiroshima, Okinawa, Kanazawa and the Kumano region are awesome places for Aman to be. In any case... as a luxury hotel in Tokyo, Aman is a great option. And I'm sure the upcoming New York and Miami properties will be similarly top-notch. I just wish they'd focus on wowing us with "true" Amans in areas that could benefit from one.
