Take a pass on Alobar…their Michelin rating days are over
How disappointing! This is not a Michelin star restaurant today…only the prices are and we don’t mind paying but we need to be wowed. The staff from first contact were excellent and our servers were friendly and knowledgeable so no issues there… Of the appetizers we had, only the foie gras deserves mention. The beef carpaccio was topped with crumbs of I’m not sure what. It’s difficult to destroy a beet salad so no need to comment there.. Dover sole at $95 sat in a pool of butter with the butt end of a lemon. Duck confit tagliatelle was way over salted. And generally speaking the presentation was non existent. The star rating was a number of years ago and if they were being rated now I’m absolutely sure they would lose their rating. There are many wonderful restaurants in Toronto so take a pass here and move on.

It is not unusual to be sent to a bar in advance of one's reservation time. We had arrived early to be sure of the location. I never dreamed that the usher, knowing that it was our anniversary would make that bar our "table". Our most romantic day of the year ended in the cacophony of a bar. The dishes were tasty but spare. No vegetables or the like accompanied the dishes. The menu description was the whole deal. We were drawn there by the Michelin star. I now know what significance to attach to one. I shall always wonder what about us enabled such disdain. Our reservation made weeks in advance meant nothing.

The food was perfection. It was also so refreshing to be to not have to dress to thee nines to enjoy a Michelin star. No foolish jacket and tie rules. The oysters, carpaccio, Iberico pork chop and the mille-feuille were all perfection done. Best chop and mille-feuille i've had in my life. Clearly the pastry was piped fresh, all the puff was crisp and light. There was a dollop of tart raspberry something in it that made it bright. And the carpaccio aioli with the watercress was just the perfect savory bite. The Iberico pork chop and Beed carpaccio were features

We had a horrible dinner here and it's hard to fathom that this place earned a Michelin star. The servers, while friendly, were inept. A classic example: one server replenished our glasses of (expensive) sparkling water with tap water. They seemed like they weren't trained and had never experienced high-end dining themselves (though this wasn't high-end, just the prices were). The food was the real stinker. Overall it was either flavourless or heavily salted. For a laugh, ask a server about the "Dover Sole" - we did because at $80 we expected Dover Sole, not a thick tasteless piece of fish that our server reassured us was Dover Sole but was actually two fillets of it stacked together (!).. The wine list offers two affordable options around the $100 range before catapulting into the $600s and above. We have eaten at some of the best restaurants in the world and will pay any amount of money for great food so it's not about the overpriced items, rather the lack of quality and the ramshackle staff and training. Stumped at how Alobar received its accolades. Perhaps the attention and rapid expansion have made this location lose the plot. I would not recommend Alobar.
Be the first to ReplyOkay, not great
I was a bit disappointed - after having been to Alo, and many, many Michelin restaurants, my expectations were rightfully high. Salmon appetizer was very good. Foie gras parfait was too sweet - they're on the right track with that well-established flavour combo, but for me it was too sweet. And the the way the waitress described it almost made me think she didn't appreciate real fois gras and this was better because it was whipped. Bit strange. The lobster was fine, hard to go wrong with - no clue why the seaweed was served with it, didn't really seem to fit. The mains were disappointing. My girlfriend had the pancetta short pasta. It wasn't chunks of pancetta but a crumble on top that tasted a bit like sand. The dish completely lacked flavour, and the sauce was an unappetizing colour. And was definitely overpriced for what you got. I had the beef short ribs and easily could've made better ones in my slow cooker, they were super basic. Had a bit of a weird interaction with the gentleman filling up water...I thought he asked if we both wanted a top up and I said no thank you, then he kind of turned more toward my girlfriend and repeated the question from start to finish - like, I wasn't asking YOU. Was really a bit embarrassing. Also, we had empty plates in front of us for far too long and the entire meal was way too fast. Anyway, this is not a Michelin restaurant. There are so many deserving restaurants in this city, I have no clue why this place got one. And the same star as Alo?! Mind blowing.
Be the first to ReplyFabulous dinner at Michelin star AloBar
Had a fabulous time at AloBar. The service and meal were excellent. This us a pricey restaurant, but well worth it. Well deserved Michelin star! This restaurant is very different from ALO, which is a blind tasting menu with a more refined atmosphere. AloBar is a noisy but "happening and hip" restaurant. The La Malinche margarita with jalapeño and the French Derby cocktail were yummy. The meal was delicious. My husband, our adult son and I shared the following: Pain au lait, Lobster wraps, beet salad, fries, broccolini, bone-in rib eye, shrimp with sour dough croutons in garlic butter, mille feuille for dessert and americano coffees. Cocktails were yummy. The Alobar team members that we interacted were attentive, charming and professional. Definitely go!

Food was ok but the service was amateur. The place wasn’t full and we still had issues. Tried talking to the manager but she had a bit of atitude.

We went here for drinks before dinner elsewhere. We sat at the bar and had an amazing experience watching one of the staff making some of the dishes. Our waiter Eli was super attentive and went out of his way to accomodate us. The restaurant had a real liveliness to it and the staff were all very attentive from offering alternative meal options for my picky self and providing an amazing fine dining experience. Add this to your 5 star yorkville experience for sure!
Be the first to ReplySuperb Experience!
Had a great dinner experience - 4 apps - ceasar salad, oysters, tuna tartar and scallops ceviche. All were amazing :)
Grilled Seabream whole fish was spectacular.
Took advantage of corkage and brought my own wine.
Star of the show was the Mille-Feuille dessert- beautiful and tasted incredible.
Very Highly Recommended!!!
Excellent restaurant in Yorkville
Part of the Alo group, which is recommendation enough .
Excellent food and service in a boisterous setting.
Prices are high but are fair considering quality and location.
Highly recommend.
Great Night at Alobar
Our dinner at Alobar was outstanding. The tuna tartare with watermelon shavings was creative and tasty; the rack of lamb was perfectly cooked. The sole also was perfectly cooked. And the blueberry crumble sundae was a great ending to a wonderful meal. The service was attentive, but not intrusive--the receptionist noticed that one of us was a little cold and quickly moved our table to a warmer location. Expensive but worth the price.
Be the first to ReplyFive-Star Fine Dining, from the Comfort of Home!
**This is a review for the Alobar @ Home takeout experience**
Necessity is the mother of invention. Executive Chef Patrick Criss has reinvented fine dining at home with a wonderful three-course menu for two available for takeout and delivery at Alobar Yorkville.
My wife and I used to love visiting Alobar Yorkville in “The Before Times”; when we could have delicious cocktails and be greeted by friendly, knowledgable staff at every turn. But given the current circumstances, we are more than impressed with the dining experience at home from Alobar.
They offer a three-course meal for two that changes weekly, and boy did we luck out to catch ours on Seafood Week! Our first course consisted of salmon sashimi, as well as scallop Crudo. Both were seasoned to perfection, and travelled very well. Our mid-course was a very fresh salad accompanied by Alobar’s legendary bread and butter program. For the main course, we had uber-buttery, slightly spicy prawn risotto, as well as roasted swordfish. The beauty of Alobar’s at-home program, is the quality of the food for travel. They provide instructions for reheating of certain dishes, and pack some garnishes separately to maintain their texture and freshness.
Overall, if you’re looking for a very special occasion at home, Alobar is first rate. Their management team, chefs, cooks and front of house staff are some of the best in the country. We can’t wait to dine in person soon, but for now, Alobar @ Home is the Bee’s Knees!
UBEREATS - ALOBAR food is just fantastic!!
Pre pandemic we could't really get a prime time to check out Alo but one this pandemic hit, Alobar popped up on my Uber app and I remembered how great ALO was supposed to be that i decided to try this. Ordered the kale salad and wedge salad as starters, the chicken and fries for me and the burger for my son. This chicken and gravy is delicious. It's not really a gravy but more a sauce with a bit of a tang to it. My son loved the burger. My husband already had a steak out she he paired that with the kale salad. I was so full from my chicken that i gave half the fries to my husband and saved my salad for lunch tomorrow - and thank you for not dressing it. Oh i have been working on the cheesecake for an hour, taking little bites hoping it will last. Then i opened my Toronto Life and guess who was in there. The owner was featured..great story to go with my meal. And yes, i will go to the restaurant when they open but in the meantime this is going to be my little treat during Covid.

Be the first to ReplyPricey but delicious
If you can afford Alo, go to Alo Bar instead. Your money goes to the same owners and instead of eating through a chore of a menu, you order what you want and get very sizable portions. I've been multiple times and am thoroughly impressed with the portions. Usually at higher end restaurants, the food is great but the portions can leave you wanting more. The first time I went I didn't even have room for desert! I didn't review then because desert is a key part of reviewing a restaurant in Toronto (a lot of nice places work on the entrees but then their desert menu is basically the freezer section of your local grocery store with a huge markup). Needless to say, the Alo Bar deserts did not disappoint.
Also if you're offended by the Alo comment, literally take that money, go to Chicago (fly from Billy Bishop or drive or whatever) and eat at Alinea, Acadia, or even a deep dish pizza, a Chicago hot dog, American Taco Bell, etc. for a much better experience.
Very good, very expensive and rather pretentious
We quite enjoyed our dinner at Alobar - definitely a splurge (prices are very steep) and a fun spot to people watch. You are warned you have two hours max for dinner which is okay but takes a little bit of the sheen off - when you're dropping this much money you like to linger. Enough complaining! The food was excellent - the grilled octopus appetizer was almost perfect and the Dover sole entree a nice portion prepared simply (butter, parsley and lemon) and brilliantly executed. Sides need to be ordered and you can't go wrong with the fries or hedgehog mushrooms. Do make use of the sommelier - she recommended a perfect wine for the Dover sole (Lauer). As noted, prices are high (appetizers in the $20s with the sole clocking in at $65). Our service was excellent (Cara really took care of us) and the room very comfortable if a little crowded and loud.
Be the first to ReplyLunch As Good As Dinner at Alobar Yorkville
As part of the celebratory Holiday season, Alobar Yorkville was open for lunch for a limited time during December. The menu was the same as that for dinner, and the food was excellent. I always love seafood and my King Salmon sashimi as an appetizer and the Tiger Prawns as my main course were superb. Loved the bread here and my friend who was allergic to gluten, complimented them on the great taste of their gluten-free bread. Service is always the best in the city. Prices at ALO and Alobar are never inexpensive - $100 per person including wine and gratuity - but it's still worth the culinary experience.
