Alo Toronto Reviews from The Last Year

We snagged some reservations for a Friday night during our trip to Toronto. We dined in the dining room and had the tasting menu. This was one of my favorite dining experiences I have had and was my favorite spot we tried in Toronto. We had to wait a few minutes before our table was ready and they had these little areas by the window and maybe order a drink for us to wait at. We started off with cocktails which I enjoyed. They also gave us some complimentary glasses of sparkling wine for our anniversary. Every dish was delicious. All of the staff were super helpful and so knowledgeable about every dish. It really felt like they were all very passionate about their jobs. We will definitely be back to try another rendition of their tasting menu!
Eager to return!
We recently dined at this remarkable restaurant that exceeded our expectations from the moment we walked through the door. The ambiance was inviting, the service was impeccable, and the food was simply outstanding. Each dish was beautifully presented and bursting with flavour. We left feeling completely satisfied and eager to return for another unforgettable dining experience.

We went for Sunday brunch and it was amazing! Incredible food and great service all wrapped in a charming, high-end "diner" atmosphere. I got the burger, my wife got the chicken and waffles and the kids got the crepes. I'm not good at describing food but they were all unbelievable (I made sure to sample everyone's plate!). Can't wait to try the dinner menu.
Everything about it was exceptional: food, service,
Everything about it was exceptional: food, service, atmosphere. Honestly wouldn't change a thing!
Multiple course tasting menu with attentive service
An evening meal at one of Canada’s best restaurants did not disappoint. Artfully presented, flavourful, freshly prepared food with attentive service.

To get to this place, it's attached to Aloette but it's a separate entrance. You should be able to see an entrance with stairs and an employee waiting by the elevator. You walk inside, tell the employee you're here for your reserved time, and then they send you up the elevator. After you walk out, they offer you a complimentary coat check. The dining room ambience is dark, intimate, and sophisticated. It's also more on the quieter side, so that you can have an actual conversation with the person or people you're with. We did the tasting menu in the dining room for $225 without tax and tip. It was about 12 courses total. I'll attach a picture of the menu along with everything I ate. Service was perfect and superb. Our empty plates were taken away when we finished and they kept our table clean. They provided a well detailed description of each course. The tasting easily breaks into my top 5. It's difficult to choose a singular favorite dish as they all were perfectly prepared, seasoned, elegant, and the presentation was immaculate. Yes, I was completely satiated by the end of the meal. This was definitely one of the highlights from my trip.
Must do for foodies!
If you appreciate culinary art and the variety of flavours you should absolutely try to get a booking at Alo. It's not just dinner, it's an experience that I can only compare to visiting a gallery or opera. The service is incredibly attentive but in no way destructive, the drinks are perfection (especially if you love watching bartenders do their magic like I do) and food is just so well balanced and thought through. As someone who doesn't do fine dining often I can honestly say this is worth every penny and I hope it always gets the appreciation it deserves.
Came here for our anniversary and it didn't disappoint.
We had the 6 course tasting menu $120 First course: tuna sashimi. This course was okay. It was served with cream cheese but the sashimi has a little fishy taste. Second course: Foie gras pate - very refreshing with citrus taste. Third course: risotto it with black truffle with dashi soup. East meets west. Italian risotto with Japanese dashi soup Fourth course: Pan seared scallop - Cooked to perfection. Crunchy on the outside and soft and moist inside. Fifth course: Veal was very tender and full of flavour. So soft that it almost melts in your mouth Sixth course: chocolate mousse with ice cream and various desserts Service is top notch. She is very friendly and always smiling. The ambiance is rather dark but romantic as we are sitting on the bar side. The only complaint is it is hard to take pictures of the food with such low light :)
anticipation not quite met
I had tried to get a reservation to Alo for the longest time, so I was very excited when I managed to secure one. Anticipation built over the week leading up to the visit, but didn't quite match the expectations I had for Canada's best restaurant. The service was great- All the staff were very attentive and knowledgeable. The barroom was small and intimate, and I felt like I was in a cool, secret part of the city, although the music was just loud enough so that no conversation could be intimate or private. I really expected to be wowed by the menu selection, presentation and taste. None blew me away. It was almost like the "A" crew had the night off. Everything tasted very good- There wasn't a bad item on any dish, but I was hoping for much better, and left Alo feeling a bit duped that I could have gotten this meal at numerous restaurants.
Good things don't always come to those who wait
I had wanted to visit Alo for some time. Perhaps it would have been better were I still waiting. While overall there's little to fault, there's equally little to praise. The service was praise worthy, though with nearly a one to one ratio of staff to table, anything less would have been inexplicable. The room itself deserves less praise; simple and unfussy, but also not as elegant or refined as one might expect when enjoying a meal approaching four figures, though most disappointing was the selection of music, which included hip hop and rap and sounded curated to appeal to the often younger, self proclaimed "influencers". The environment offered little ambience, certainly not one consistent with the anticipated experience of eating meticulously prepared, beautifully plated, and professionally served dishes. As for those dishes, the reason one ultimately goes to Alo and the few restaurants recognized globally for still investing silly amounts on kitchens filled with 15-20 white coated chef's acknowledging their leader with "yes chef" in military precision, it was simply good. That's the greatest disappointment of the Alo experience, that the sum of all that training and military precision in the kitchen when finally plated is only good. The menu the evening I dined leaned very heavily into Japanese inspirations and flavour profiles. French ingredients and techniques applied to Japanese flavours has worked well for many higher end restaurants for decades, but here the repetition of an often singular flavour, in this case the fermented flavour one might find in a delicate bowl of miso soup, carried through several of the served 10 courses showed less creativity then the chef and his team are likely capable of. So after trying to secure a reservation personally for well over a year, and then having a concierge service take over for another couple of months before finally finding a mid week early evening time slot, the expectations set together with the restaurant's recent Michelin recognition were perhaps too high to have been met. For those with enough curiosity and disposable income, I say try it and form your own opinion, and for all others I say that sometimes it's better to wait. https://www.tripadvisor.ca/ShowUserReviews-g155019-d8443957-r935707945-ALO_RESTAURANT-Toronto_Ontario.html#
I was lucky to visit this place for my birthday.
I always had hard time securing the spot since their reservations fill up quite quickly! My significant other and I participated in the Dining room tasting menu, which is $225 per person. Upon arrival, you are greeted by a host that will take you upstairs. You go upstairs by this tiny elevator, and it is pretty slow. They help with coat check and take you to your table. Overall, the service is top-notch. From checking in before you begin your meal to when you leave the table to use the washroom, and keeping you company if your partner is gone for a few minutes! I enjoyed all the detailed descriptions of each menu, but at one point, I just could not pay attention since I was thrilled to try all the delicious dishes. I liked how there was enough space for the chair and the table. We were able to sit next to each other and enjoy our meal together. You can do some upgrades with extra but we did not opt in for it. We might do it if we revisit it, but I do not think it's necessary. My significant other's favourite restaurant is Scarpetta in Las Vegas (he has visited here at least 10 times), and said Alo could be better than them. Every dish has unique ingredients that harmonize in your mouth. Every first bite my partner and I had, we were heavenly. I just enjoyed every single menu and could not ask for more. There are a variety of desserts. We were able to finish ours, but one of our friends who had visited in the past had to bring them home as they were too full. So do expect to get full by the end of the course! I was also given another dessert on the side with a candle to celebrate my birthday. They were extremely sweet about it. Although there is no specific dress code for this place, I would dress up in a classy way to match the place's ambiance. It was one of the most phenomenal experiences I had in 2023. I would love to revisit and try their Summerlicious/Winterlicious program.
With all the hype that Alo gets, my expectations were
With all the hype that Alo gets, my expectations were pretty high coming in for a New Year's Eve tasting menu. We were seated in the bar room, which wasn't very spacious, but had a nice moody aura. Though Alo is labelled as a French restaurant, our seven course meal was surprisingly Japanese, with components like bluefin tuna sashimi, sake kasu, and maitake mushrooms. My favourite courses were the koshihikari rice white truffle risotto and the east coast scallop topped with caviar. Flavours of each dish were well balanced in every course, tasting best with all elements in one bite. Service was great throughout the evening. My friend didn't like the foie gras (our second course), and the waiter promptly replaced it with a citrus-y beet salad. We appreciated that they were well prepared for such a scenario, especially with how rich the foie gras is. Fresh cutlery was provided with every course, with the waitstaff clearing the table in sync. I was content with my experience, and I do think Alo deserves their star, but with a price point of $250pp, I wasn't entirely blown away. You are also required to pay the full amount upon booking. I'd love to come back in the future to see if the dining room experience is different.
You don't want to miss this one
That's for sure a place you don't want to miss! The food is both beautiful and delicious, the service is on point and the restaurant is very cozy. We like going to Michelin awarded places and this one is clearly in the top 3 of the ones we visited
What an evening to have
A fabulous evening with exciting and delightful food ingredients we had never tasted before. 11 course tasting menu with wine flight. Ben was attentive and so professional, Christopher was an excellent sommelier and if you didn’t like the wine he came an alternative. The stars of the night other than the chefs were Maya and Alicia both deserve a bonus for each he service and kindness well done ladies.
A Very Special Evening
Having eaten at other Aloette Bar, Aloette, and take-out during the pandemic, finally I managed to reserve at the Alo Dining Room. We had the eleven course tasting menu with the nine course wine pairings (2 oz. each). Starting with a warm welcome, we proceeded to a quiet dining room, that was never crowded nor hurried, creating a leisurely atmosphere. The servers are outstanding, well trained and a well honed team. They are attentive but never obtrusive. The food is beautifully presented and delicious. My date and I have lived in many countries and visited many more. We rated this meal among the best we have eaten. It is expensive but the expense is justified.
It’s once rated the best restaurant in Canada
I was amazed the first time when I dined here. But the second time I came it’s slight disappointing. Maybe my expectations were too high. Overall it’s a pleasant dining experience. Food is beautifully plated and servers are attentive and very well trained. All ingredients are in season and fresh. You can tell the chefs team put their effort on creating the seasonal menu.
As I recount my latest experience at Alo, I grapple with
As I recount my latest experience at Alo, I grapple with the final mark: would I still consider them a 9 or a "top pick"? There were dishes that were incredible, but then some that missed the mark. The tasting menu ($225 per person) was off to a shaky start when the canapés arrived. We're instructed to eat the four bites in a particular order. The first, an oyster with compressed cantaloupe and Iberico ham oil had a fishy essence without an acidic element (like the traditional mignonette or lemon) to help cut through the strong taste. It also seemed off that it wasn't ice cold for something that should be served uber fresh. The first bite was a bust. Slowly, the redemption started with the beautifully presented uni tart, which was made even creamier with a thick crème fraiche on the bottom. While this wasn't mind-blowing, it was at least not repulsive. After the fishy oyster I had doubts about the mackerel tart, but this was unfounded as the meaty fish was very clean tasting and well balanced with bright pops of the daintiest tomatoes and fruit. Indeed, there was an ocean-like essence from the caviar, but it wasn't overpowering. The canapés ended with a foie gras and strawberry jelly tart that created a sweet and savoury element. This was surprisingly good and wonderfully rich. It's unclear if Alo is pandering to Michelin inspectors as the procession of Japanese dishes just seem out of place at a French restaurant. Sure, I can understand if they want to throw in one dish that's has a Japanese influence, but to feature a handful was just too much. Moreover, some dishes just can't live up to what you'd be served during an omakase meal. Chef Patrick Kriss should drop the madai course, a sea bream paired with chili oil, caviar, and kumquat. Like the oyster, it was fishy and warm. Give me this fish cool with freshly grated wasabi and soy sauce any day. The kinmedai was better, the red snapper was at least cold and refreshing with the oh so finely julienned radish in the centre. The various oils complimented the fish nicely and this was an improvement over the other sashimi course. If Alo must have a sashimi course (why would it), one is enough. Having a soft spot for chawanmushi I wouldn't be opposed to this remaining on the menu. The actual steamed egg was hot and silky, but then enhanced with lovely French and Western elements: smooth foie gras tofu cubes, fragrant truffle paste, crunchy radish, sweet corn, and crispy chicken skin. All this amongst a pool of reduced capon broth. What an incredible dish! This is a long review, head to Gastro World for the rest.
Nice but not Michellin worthy
Had the tasting menu at the bar. The atmosphere and service were great! Unfortunately, the food did not live to my expectations. Of the 6 courses, loved 3 ( crudo, risotto and scallop dishes). The foie gras tart was bland and dessert tasty but uninspiring. Where the restaurant really lost me is on the steak course, which was tough and chewy. For a Michellin star restaurant inexcusable. Overall, had a nice dinner but definitely did not feel like a Michelin dining experience.
Great food but horrible location entrance.
We loved the food! Great presentation and friendly staff. Had the six course menu at the bar room for $120 with wine pairing that was worth the price. Staff gracefully waived the charges for my husband’s wine pairing (with tiny quantities for medical reasons) which was a nice touch. Thanks Anthony! Wagyu beef for an extra $90 was superb! All’s great, except the entrance that leads to an old decrepit elevator that gave us the impression we’re going to a warehouse. A downer for such a great restaurant. However, as we went there for the food, it was worthwhile.
We went for the $125 pp bar seating 6 course prix fixe.
Ambiance was nice but note that the tables are very small and tight together. Service was good but I have had better at other fine dining establishments. Portions were very small, but I did not come ravenously hungry, so I was satisfied and happy by the end of the meal. Hamachi sashimi - divine. Sitting atop some very flavourful oils. Foie gras tart with strawberry gelé and crème fraîche - super different and interesting, but way too rich Rice - very creamy and buttery, the crispy rice on top adds great texture and grapefruit pulp adds a refreshing tang Scallop and mussel in foam - a perfectly seared scallop is the way to my heart Steak - not a steak lover but even I thought this was great. Eggplant tempura on the side. Bread - very rich and oily bread. Adding butter on top seemed like overkill. Came warm. Dessert - a delicate and light peach cake, passion fruit caramel, canelé, strawberry jelly, and a birthday dulce de leche dessert with candle (not pictured). Although this meal stretched my budget, it was an adventure in food and well worth it for a special occasion.
Great Service
One of the best restaurants in the area. Totally recommend it. Nice food, nice service, nice view.

Payouts Blocked Because of Sell Through Rate |
Yes unfortunately they are finding more and more ways to lock up sellers money. Sell thru rate, refund rate, limiting withdrawal amounts ler day and per month (which for me are the same number which makes no sense). Lot of sellers leaving as you can see from the lifetime sales not really increasing. Most posts on here are frustrated sellers which is not a recipe for success

Need to cancel a bid, not getting a response… how do I do it? |
Click on "Take off the Market Option" in your portfolio
Working on your bid? |
Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.
Process after bid is accepted. |
Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
Where do the Reservations on AppointmentTrader come from? |
Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.
What happens if my bid expires unanswered? |
Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.

Purchased double chicken please for two hours from now and no response from Appointment Trader regarding my name transfer request which I paid for yesterday.
