UNDERWHELMING!
I'll keep it as brief as I possibly can....if you love Michelin Fine Dining and the "complete experience" of a wonderful, well presented Tasting Menu showcasing the Chef's skills....then this place is one to easily avoid without the feeling of missing out! Great Layout & Design when you walk in and Well Trained Staff but unfortunately the food simply did not match our expectations on far too many of the Courses served up. Having "stomached" what felt like an endless amount of "thrown together" Ceviche courses (only broken up by a Plate of rather tasty Chicken Rice).....there appears to be a total disregard for any type of "texture" in so many of the Dishes presented with many of them executed very averagely....we found a piece of Shell in one of dishes for example...(not the Texture we wanted)! I'm all about simplicity and letting the Produce speak for itself but we choose to dine at these places to be taken on a journey of the taste buds...and it just felt very "samey" .....after "Ceviche Overload" we finally made it to the Lamb which we had been looking forward to (based on the fact that the Waiters had been parading it around on a Platter all night to other tables.....and guess what, it was over cooked!!!! In fact, I've not been served a piece of meat that badly cooked in ANY restaurant for over 25 years....just tough, tasteless and just not good enough quite frankly! Such a shame really as the people in there clearly are working hard but if you put yourself on a pedestal, you need to back it up with delivery! On the plus side, the Deserts were of a decent level, especially the Beetroot Sorbet which was excellent I rarely write Reviews on TripAdvisor, (as I always look for the glass half full whenever we eat at MIchelin restaurants with only a small handful over the years being a disappointment)....but sometimes you just feel compelled to say something as the feeling of an unenjoyable meal, can stay with you as long as the feeling of a great one! I did tell the establishment pretty much everything in this Review at the end of the meal BTW so I feel it more than fair to outline it to the general public so they can choose to take note or make their own choices Best of Luck if you do go, as you know the old saying....opinions are like !!%%$$$....everyone's got one! So go see for yourself!
Be the first to Replyawful! absolutely mediocre cooking for insane prices. golden rasperry of restaurants!
over the past years we have visited many michelin 1-2 star restaurants and Alkimia was hands-down the worst! The positive: the ambience was unique and quirky, and the staff were lovely. The negative: the food was absolutely mediocre - bland dishes with no taste or any recognizeable unique skill required to prepare them whatsoever. At all the other michelin restaurants we've visited, the dishes were true art - in terms of composition, presentation, texture, and taste. At Alkimia, pretty much any of the dishes we could have cooked ourselves (and possibly better)! It was so dull and bland - and at times plain bad - that we sent back many of the plates unfinished. The staff told us that the plain dishes were the restaurant's style - purist and simple using great fresh ingredients. Well, it's possible that the ingredients were great, but the chef's job is not just to go shopping but to actually cook and prepare these ingredients! When we received a pan of plain fried rice with 4x salad leaves on top we thought it was a practical joke and that there were hidden cameras somewhere. One of the desserts was a half dry croissant filled with custard.. Seriously??? This is ok for a school cantina, but certainly not for alleged fine dining. And even the recommended wines were average and slightly sour. Without exaggeration, out of an 11-course tasting menu NOT A SINGLE DISH WAS GOOD OR REMOTELY HAD A "WOW" EFFECT! In only 2x points Alkimia truly amazes: (1) how on earth they were able to earn and keep a michelin star (maybe the Michelin guide inspectors are friends or relatives, or are not in posession of taste buds?)? and (2) how Alkimia have mastered the impossible - the true alchemic art of transmuting lead (mediocre food) into gold (absurdly high bills)! abolutely no! no! no! avoid this place!!

Wonderful showcase of Spanish food, wine & hospitality. Amazing fresh, light, subtle & thoroughly delicious cuisine; paired absolutely perfectly with European wines. Attentive, insightful & passionate waiters made for a memorable evening
Be the first to ReplyVery good, but pricey
We had 2030 reservations on a Monday night and obtained, in our opinion, the primo table right near the final food prep area. Thus, we could watch the chef team as they prepared all of the courses--which is not the norm in this restaurant.
We had the tasting menu without customization. (FYI, from what we saw, they appear quite accommodating of diners with dietary restrictions.) A photo of the menu is attached--although the first dessert was changed to a delicious, light pumpkin and creme confection.
We also had a wine pairing for each of us, which one of us truly enjoyed while the other found it just ok. The theme of the wines was the Mediterranean basin, which gave a wide scope with which to work. (From Jerez to the Bekaa valley, in fact.)
The food was excellent, with a seafood tilt. The most noteworthy dish was roasted lobster with (dark meat) chicken. Had never had this coupling before and it worked beautifully. The other surprise was the caramelized cabbage rice--the description didn't appeal, but the dish was quite good.
Service was outstanding, although the first several courses felt a little rushed. Our only caveat is that, at $640, it was by more than $150 the priciest Michelin one star that we've visited during this trip to Spain. (All restaurants involved a tasting menu and wine pairing for each of us, and most of them were in Madrid or Barcelona.)
Nonetheless, a memorable meal!
Better than expected
The entrance is not the best you can expect... You ring a bell and they ask your reservation name by intercom.... Anyway, once upstairs, food and service are excellent!!!! Worth to respite!!!!
