In summary, it was my last night in Singapore with my European relatives that I haven’t seen since covid. We sat down at 815pm and after 30mins a flustered waiter came and said, right, so set menu in $300/head. Now it was feeling late so we said we’d prefer a la carte but the menu didn’t have prices on a bunch of things. The waiter said: no problem! I’ll bring out some dishes, you tell me what you like and we order more if them. You can have what you want and I’ll look after you. With the benefit of hindsight, we should have asked questions but it was getting late, the waiter was so charming and we felt in good hands. We also just wanted to eat as my 80 year old uncle was getting tired. Well…some strange dishes started to arrive. Squished sardines that formed a cracker, whole shells with chewy tasteless meat inside that we sent back. We reminded the waiter we wanted mainstream food and my niece was vegetarian. Some delicious chicken skewers arrived and the Waghu beef skewers were fine. Now it was 1030pm so stopped the food and asked for the bill. Yet food kept coming out: here’s the whole fish you ordered. We sent it back reminding then we were just waiting on our bill. mushrooms arrived, green chilli’s which we tried to send back and they said: no! You asked for vegetarian! I started getting frustrated so walked out to reception to find the manager. He left me waiting 10mins and finally came out with the bill for the set menu of $2k!. A very frustrating 30mins ensued where he itemised the bill and went through line by line what we had eaten and what we hadn’t. Turns out they were charging us for things we hadn’t eaten and finally he begged us to pay for the things we hadn’t eaten or the owner would dock it off his wages. Our lovely waiter wouldn’t get paid either. So awful. We ended up paying double than we ate and left tired, unsatisfied and $1.2k poorer. Such a sad way to end our trip. I’m sure there is an explanation on their side and I don’t think they were intentionally trying to rip off the tourists. My suspicion is they didn’t communicate what the deal was and didn’t listen to our needs. I’ll finish by saying regardless of how this happened, paying $50 for 5 little skewered tasteless beans each, almost $150 for a handful of crab claws (some tender, some inedible bc so chewy) and $40 per waghu skewer with 3 morsels of meat is nothing short of highway robbery. The food wasn’t great and the cost of it is outrageous.
