Excellent yet disappointing
Our first dinner on a Sunday evening, just my husband and myself, delighted us. The welcome, the service, the food, the setting, it was all very satisfying. So much so, that we decided to go back as a family a few days later. The reservation with Resy, which had been modified to accommodate 3 instead of 2 people, had obviously not been registered with the restaurant. This led to a very cold and argumentative welcome. As I’d that were not unpleasant enough, were then shown to the darkest and most ill lit booth and when we asked to change It for another available booth, it was done quite belligerently. The food was good, again. But the welcome spoiled it for us that time. Too bad because we were happy to recommend this authentic feeling Japanese restaurant.

When our college roommate landed his dream job, we made him to treat us here. The food was amazing at every level. It was like we were transported to Japan. Food is on par with some of the best izakaya I visited there. That meal had stuck with me for 12 years. My college roommates and I would still talk occasionally about how good it was. I finally had the opportunity to come back couple of nights ago. The first thing I picked up was that the Michelin award is from 2018 - there is almost no award since then. I brushed it aside when I saw the interior decor is exactly the same as what it was, thinking it must still be the same place. My first inkling that something is different is I don’t hear Japanese in the restaurant anymore. The customers and staff all used to speak Japanese. When I saw the menu, I was also surprised that it was a laminate paper with all English - where was all the Japanese handwriting? The price was also on the high side, but I thought it should be given how good the food WAS. Needless to say, it was a huge disappointment. The cold tofu is not homemade, but store bought. The beef tongue skewer was impossible to chew off. The tuna roll was wrapped in hot rice. The price they charge just doesn’t match with the quality of the dishes. Finally, the restroom is filthy. Sometimes it is best to leave memories untouched.

My favorites were the cold tofu, agedashi tofu , sesame pudding and grilled mackerel. The black cod was very tasted and “melted” in your mouth, but I still preferred the mackerel . Great selection of sake - we had the “black dragon “ - which was simply out of the world . Our waitress was friendly and helpful . Highly recommended .

We have been coming to this restaurant for years when we visit New York. We had lived in Tokyo for 5 years before first coming here and always appreciated the vibe and authenticity here. It was always full and abuzz late into the evening.
We went tonight and could not believe the difference. Virtually empty by 9pm.... and no Japanese vibe at all. The staff and chefs are generally not Japanese ( a departure from before) - the food was solid but below last levels. For example the cold tofu starter was much less smooth and nuanced than before and more heading down the path towards cottage cheese like consistency.
In the end we walked out feeling like the restaurant must have been recently sold and the new version of it is not catching on... time to find your next favorite Japanese haunt.
Authentic Food and Vibe
There for RW. Could be some local place in Tokyo where people go after work. Food carefully prepared but not shouting. Drinking is equally important in izayaka, somewhat pricey here. Low key service. Not for sushi.

Lunch yesterday at this unpretentious very Japanese-style restaurant with friends and would give 4-1/2stars if I could. Only a brief walk from Grand Central Terminal, let yourself be transported to Japan as you enter and be greeted. Good privacy for quiet discussions while served promptly by knowledgeable staff. Adequate portions aimed at providing a balanced meal rather than the usual rolls/sushi fest. Don't forget that the beef comes on a hot plate, so take it off when it's done to your liking. Aburiya Kinnosuke is worth a visit as a good getaway from the mainstream midtown scene.

This is a small Japanese restaurant set up like in Japan. When you enter inside the hallway, on both sides are private rooms set up for 4 With private curtains.
Then there is the bar area surrounding the people either grilling food or preparing sushi dishes.
Food is always delicious and the menu does change.
This place is reasonably priced but not cheap. It serves good quality food.
Today I had the shrimp and vegetable tempura and their pork belly grilled and served sliced with a slightly spicy sauce.
I love this place. The ambience makes me
Feel
As if I went to visit Japan.
Great staff, maybe a bit pricey for what you got .. but still good
I'm struggling with how exactly to review this. I really did enjoy the experience - each dish was delicious and the serving was always really fun. I will say that I found it a bit pricey for what you got... but still enjoyed it ... Like I said, struggling :)
We really didn't know what to order and our waitress was so patient and didn't make us feel silly about knowing nothing! That was great.
The seating area was great - we did feel like we were alone as we were tucked away. That was nice.
I'd recommend this to a specific subset of my friends - those who love food experiences and are ok paying for it :)
Trapped!
We came here for lunch mainly due to the recommendations on internet and it was a totally disappointment! Pricy lunch menu and food portion was mean. They serve Wagyu beef on iron board with flame, so it bound to be overcooked! Sashimi was included at lunch sets, but the size of each piece was only 1/3 as big as normal.

Saw a few reviews and tried this restaurant for lunch. Very disappointing! The decor was quite nice, esp the entrance. The toilet was clean and tidy! Apart from the above, the food came in small portions and not worth the money! The Aburiya lunch set ($31) came in with 4 tiny pieces of sashimi, 4 small pieces of grilled Washu beef and one piece of rather bland cod!
My wife ordered sashimi and tempura set ($29)! The meal arrived with no tempura sauce !! My son’s sea eel rice ($29) came with 4 small pieces of fish, very different from the picture !!
In short, an expensive lunch but not one set meal was up to our expectations.
Super fresh and authentic food
We had a wonderful time here. The sushi and food with a wonderful selections of sake with the sushi. Highly recommend.
