1789 Restaurant & Bar Washington Reviews from The Last Year
This is a very fancy restaurant.
Inside is white tablecloth so you can definitely dress up to go here. The service was really attentive and the food was amazing. We had a tasting menu for Valentine's Day. My favorite item on the menu was the foie gras, waygu tartare and surf and turf!

As a somewhat regular at the Tombs and having dined at a few of the many Clyde's Restaurants, I can honestly say that my expectations were nowhere near as high as to the level of quality that my friends and I enjoyed tonight at the 1789. In a word it was simply "AMAZING". The service was flawless, there were there when we needed them and mysteriously disappeared when we were set. Sometimes in fine dining the service staff can be hovering over us like Seagulls on the prowl at the Jersey Shore. We took our time to consume three courses and an enjoy a few libations. The dining room is intimate and inviting the fireplace was lit aglow, warm and comforting to sit by. The menu is adventurous but not contrived or so esoteric that we needed to google explanations so that we might navigate our choices. Presentations were elegant and simple with the emphasis on execution. Unlike so many trendy new places around DC seem to be awash in multiple concoctions that involve far too many syllables. The flavors were on point and the kitchen showed a prowess that must only come as a notice that it's all about the taste, the freshness and the seasonality that we find ourselves in. The New Bedford Seared Sea Scallops were delicious, plump and sweet. And the accompanying sauce just perfectly paired with the Scallops. The Escargot garlicky and salty. The only ever so slight misstep was with the Grilled Octopus, a wee tad rubbery possibly didn't poach long or slow enough to tenderize the tentacles before they were finished on the Grill. Our Entrees were all eagerly passed around the table and there was unanimous agreement that all four were perfect. We sampled the Lamb, the Halibut, Duck and the Wagu Short-ribs, whose taste and tenderness took me back to a similar experience 30 years ago at a small French Cafe in Newport. In my Humble opinion this entire experience was undoubtedly the finest meal I've ever been served in our Nations Capital. Reservations are almost always a must but trust me it is indeed worth the wait. Everyone got dessert because we were all part of the Clean Plate Club. Of particular note was the 1789 Pastry Chef's interpretation of Classic Carrot Cake. Reservations are highly recommended and be assured that you will leave with a delicious taste in your mouth and an overwhelming urge to plan your return to the "1789".

Loved the atmosphere (exposed beams, gorgeous fireplace, white tablecloths, and colonial style paintings). Our table ordered the halibut, duck, pork chop, and other dishes. The salad ingredients were so fresh. Everything was superb.
Great place new server brought us the check mid service so
Great place new server brought us the check mid service so that was weird but she came back to take it to another table. The host stand also called me during our meal looking for me so that was also pretty odd. Besides that the food was great. I would come back. Maybe better execution overall next time would be nice. I got the scallops and the brioche crusted fish. Dessert was amazing as we had all of them at the table. Yummy.
Thank you DC restaurant week!! Heard a lot of compliments
Thank you DC restaurant week!! Heard a lot of compliments about this restaurant, and when I saw they were participating in DC restaurant week we had to go! Old elegant decor greets you when you walk in, we were seated right by the fireplace. The table was elegantly dressed and set. We were quickly greeted by our waiter, who informed us of the extensive wine and cocktail menu. I started my meal with the best Old Fashion that I've ever had! It was a brown butter old fashion with Buffalo Trace bourbon, it literally was to die for! For my meal I chose the way beef tartare, and it did not disappoint. It was a combination of creamy and chunky at the same time, delicious. For my entree I chose the Braised Waygu short rib with sweet potato purée, kale, and petite heirloom carrots, all cooked to perfection. For dessert I chose the ice cream and sorbet combo, I know ice cream? I was extremely full. I got the vanilla bean, maple bourbon ice cream with a lemon sorbet, very good!! Overall the meal was great, from drinks to dessert, this place is a must try!!!
We took advantage of the restaurant week dinner.
She had the scallops in a coconut lime sauce, and enjoyed them. I had the octopus which had a perfect texture. Not too firm or rubbery which happens when they are overcooked. For entrees we shared a NY strip steak and the halibut. Portion size on both entrées was small, but both dishes were otherwise flawless. The steak had parsnip purée, Swiss chard , mushrooms, all in a pepper reduction. The fish had firm wheat berries, grilled leaks and fennel. We had a pear tart for dessert. It had poached pear which I found hard to taste, and almond tart that was nice. It was the least successful item we tried. Our other dessert was chocolate mousse that was very well done with a small amount of raspberry custard. The other components didn't contribute much. Despite small portions, the meal in its entirety was ample. Our room was well appointed. Service was excellent. 1789 will reward you with a first class dining experience.
I gave the 1789 restaurant a go after hearing good things
I gave the 1789 restaurant a go after hearing good things about it. I took the opportunity to try it during restaurant week. I will start off with the inside, the decor was a very unique design it was like entering an old time like village. The plate setting and seat arrangements are very well thought out and planned that nobody feels like they are truly on top of each other. The service is another thing I will rate highly, they were very attentive and interactive. Gave great recommendations and pairings for the deserts. As for the food, I really enjoyed having the Wagyu tarter, that was a good combination of flavors that didn't overpower each other. The only thing I was not a fan of was the wagyu rib, the flavor really reminding me of an average pulled pork sandwich. The vegetables and spinach and carrot sauce were great and had great flavor but I don't think paired well with the wagyu rib in my opinion. I would recommend getting something else especially at the price point. The desert was I think by far the best! Fluffy and tasted exactly as described, I would highly recommend getting that. Overall a great experience, if you have the funds to come and experience the food do so, I don't know when I'll be back as it is very pricy for two but if it ever fits my budget for a fancy dinner date out I would consider dropping bye.
Incredible experience from start to finish! Went for
Incredible experience from start to finish! Went for restaurant week and thoroughly enjoyed every course. The ambiance is very cozy and romantic (they have a fireplace in the dining room ), and the service is top notch. Ordered the NY strip and wagyu short rib as entrees and both were cooked perfectly. Also, highly recommend the tuna crudo and scallops for appetizers and the key lime tart and chocolate mousse for dessert! We'll definitely be back!
The food was great.
My son's favorite restaurant during my visit. The service was impeccable. Restaurant is very charming.
We went here to celebrate our anniversary and everyone went
We went here to celebrate our anniversary and everyone went above and beyond. The food was dynamite. I had the pork chop and my husband had the lamb chops. Both were juicy and cooked to perfection. I had the cosmopolitan and my husband requested a hot toddy. The ambiance was nice! We loved the fireplace and the historic atmosphere.
An OK meal for $120, not $200+
Service 4*,food 3*,prices 2* We've dined at plenty of expensive restaurants, and we have come to expect the food to match the prices. The tuna crudo was so overwhelmed by the spicing that it disapeared. The foie gras mouse was fine and delicate, but served with a doughnut that was as good as a Krispy Kreme. Really? How on Earth did it find its way to our table from breakfast? The bouillabaise, a bit skimpy -3clams, 4 mussels, no soup,no rouille. The branzino was a decently sized piece. The pork chop was tasty, but chewy and on the dry side. Two glasses of wine, no dessert or coffee. With 20% tip, north of $200. OK, but not worth the price.
Customer Service Issue
Four of us had dinner at 1789 last evening, 16 December 2023. The food was very good and our server was extremely attentive to our table. The issue I have is that we were sent a $100.00 dollar gift certificate by a previous General Manager for poor service that we received during a visit in August 2019. To ensure that the gift certificate was still valid I called on 11 December and spoke to one of the manager's. I explained how we had received the gift certificate and the certificate date which was dated 2018, though we were told by the past manager who sent the certificate that it would still be valid when used. I also explained that we had not used the certificate during the COVID-19 pandemic years. During the 11 December phone call the restaurant manager, told me that the gift certificate 'would still be valid.' When we went to pay the bill last evening I was told by the server that the gift certificate was not valid since there was a 2018 expiration date on the card. I would not have used the gift certificate if I had been told on 11 December that it could no longer be used. Since the server stated again that the certificate could not be honored even though I spoke with a restaurant manager who said it would be valid, I then asked to speak with a manager. The manager with whom I had spoken telephonically on 11 December then came to our table. He then stated that he told me on the phone that the gift certificate probably could be used. My family and I have visited 1789 on many previous occasions. Though we were extremely perplexed that the gift certificate was not accepted after proactively calling several days in advance of our dinner reservation and being told that it would be honored, we were more disappointed by the manager's negative attitude and change in his response to my initial telephonic inquiry. As noted, I would not have attempted to use the gift certificate if I was told by the manger on 11 December that the gift certificate could not be honored. After this negative experience with the manager, unfortunately we will never come back to 1789 again. Dave S.
Don’t get deasert
Don’t order dessert. The peach upside down cake was the worst. Dry . Couldn’t eat it. Heard all the staff suggesting the chocolate bomb. Literally it was edible but not great - the peach upside down cake was diagusting
Interesting building, ok food & service
Great ambiance and building. Ok service; it was formal at first but lowered as the meal progressed to the point I had to ask the staff to quit reaching across my face to refill the water which I’ve never had to ask someone before. The two waitstaff that took our orders were fantastic though. Food was alright. My steak was slightly over cooked and the octopus was also just ok as was the rest of our food. Wine selection was good and the recommendations went well with the food. We also had a cocktail before the meal and that was fine. Seems like the place is betting on its history and building to bring people in. Overall it wasn’t a total disappointment and was a nice stop in Georgetown to take our teenagers. Don’t miss the Transformers outside the house across the street.
Great atmosphere, fantastic food, attentive & friendly service.
Absolutely the restaurant we remembered it to be. Excellent food, attentive & friendly staff, and a great atmosphere. We returned to 1789 after a great dining experience there back in 2007, the last time we were in DC. My best friend and I remembered it so fondly and how we wanted to eat everything on the menu back then - and nearly did with how much we ordered. It was the same this time! The gazpacho was so great to start and even though I'm not generally a pork lover, the server wholeheartedly suggested it and I'm so glad she did. The spaetzle it came with was incredible. Really loved the whole experience and I wish I was in DC more often so I could eat here more regularly. It's not cheap, but it's so worth it.
Amazing experience
Absolutely fabulous dining - all dishes had unique and special taste. Both entrees and deserts met our expectations. Also the service was unique.
Highly Recommend
Had a fabulous meal here, celebrity a birthday. Staff was super friendly and efficient an the food was amazing! The atmosphere feels intimate and is relatively quiet so easy to have a conversation over dinner. I'd highly recommend and would definitely return!
Nice quiet gem in GT
Definitely one of the best restaurants in GT. Not cheap but worth the price Food Very well prepared. Not huge portion, reasonably sized, artistically presented, thoroughly flavored. Service One of the best. The service was relatively quick. Everyone was so friendly Ambience Classic. Very cozy Location Very accessible from Georgetown Inn. Close to GT University
Best of the best!
What wonderful experience. Our dinner was beyond superb - with the staff on an equal footing. Casey, the hostess could not have been more accommodating. Randy behind the bar actually came to check on our satisfaction with the meal during dinner. The recommendations of our server Stephen were perfect. We've been on the road for two weeks eating at the very best restaurants in Pa., Va., SC, (Planters Inn in Charleston) NC (Ole Edwards Inn - Relais), Ga. and Kiawah (The Sanctuary) - this was far and away the best dinner yet. Kudos to 1789. We thank you!
Sit back and let yourself be spoiled
The dining room is small and homey (with fireplace and wooden beams). I have not had service like this in years! Hats off to Lindsey (our server). She was so attentive and courteous and helpful. Really, just perfect and highly professional. The food was fun and delicious. We started with the escargots and mushrooms. The menu described them as being in a croissant. It would be more correct to say that they were topped with mini-palmiers...but nevertheless, the flavors were wonderful. My companion had a margarita, which again was different than expected...but very refreshing and only lightly sweetened (much to her liking). For our entrees we had Wagyu Short rib with polenta, and rockfish that was very artfully plated with three colors/flavors of sauce. Our side dish was rosti, which came out looking like a cross between fish sticks and tater tots. Yet, they were perfectly crispy and when paired with harissa aioli, hard to resist. If you are getting the impression that the meal was a memorable experience, you would be right. A great balance of classic dishes modernized in unexpected but delicious ways. For dessert, we enjoyed the chocolate boule and strawberry delight. Both were so complex and again, artfully presented. The strawberry plate presented, I think, six small takes on strawberry dessert: ranging from warm rhubarb cake to foam, meringues, ice cream and a chocolate covered strawberry! If you are going for a birthday, as I did, you will truly feel feted. Savor the small details: like the fact that they print "Happy Birthday" on the menu of the celebrant. Considering the level of service we received, the prices were well worth it. Find an excuse to treat yourself to this indulgent night out! You will not regret it.
